Mounting FAT32 in Solaris 10 step by step

Hi!
I had problem with do that and I finally solve. I saw that many peoples have problems with mounting FAT32 so I decided to write how I do that.
1. FAT32 must be a primary partition!
2. # smc
3. In This Computer-> Storage-> Disks check device name. I have c1d0.
4. Close smc and type # fdisk <device name>p0
for example: # fdisk c1d0p0
Check the number of FAT32 partition. In my case it is nr 4. Type 6 to cancel.
5. Make direction /pcfs/c by adding new folder or # mkdir /pcfs and # mkdir /pcfs/c
6. # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/<device name>p<nr of FAT32 partition>:c /pcfs/c
for example: # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1d0p4:c /pcfs/c
That's all!

Hi,
I tried exactly as you suggested but it did not work for me. It shows unrecoverable error during system startup messgaes.
I have Windows 47 gb, Linux 28 gb, Solaris 38 gb and FAT32 76 gb.
The FAT32 partition is being detected fine from Linux and XP as well.
I did the partitioning using the utility provided in Ubuntu Linux installation CD.
I am not sure if the FAT32 is primary or not, how can I verify and if not how I can make it primary partition? Please help. Thanks a lot.
Ravi

  • Solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit?

    solaris10 x86, laptop, 10G FAT32 partition for windows & x86 exchange data.
the fat32 partition mount as normal, can be read fine.
but write some file by x86, that can not find by windows.
anyboy know did the solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit? or no limit, why this problem occur?

    Mounting Windows partition in Solaris
The easiest way to share data now is to do it through a FAT32 partition. Solaris
recognises it as partition of type pcfs. It is specified as device:drive where drive is
either the DOS logical drive letter (c through z) or a drive number (1 through 24).
Drive letter c is equivalent to drive number 1 and represents the Primary DOS partition
on the disk; drive letters d through z are equivalent to drive numbers 2 through 24,
and represent DOS drives within the Extended DOS partition.Syntax is
    mount -F pcfs device:drive /directroy-name
where directory name specifies the location where the file system is mounted.
To mount the first logical drive (d:) in the Extended DOS partition from an IDE hard
disk in the directory /d use
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:d /d
You can use mount directory-name after appending following line is in
    /etc/vfstab file
    device:drive directory-name pcfs no rw
    for example
    c0d0s0:c /c pcfs no rw
If your windows partition like the following means
    C: - NTFS, D:-FAT32, E:-NTFS, F:-FAT32
    Then you can only mount D, F not C & E.
    Mounting D Drive:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:c /mountpoint
    Mounting F Drive
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:d /mountpoint
The driveletter only for fat not including other file systems (ntfs or any linux filesystems).

  • Mount fat32 on x86: already mounted or busy

hi. i suppose mounting fat32 on x86 is well-documented, but i'm having trouble, so i'd appreciate some help.
im dual booting with solaris 10 and xp. my partitions are as follows:
    1st physical drive
    &#91;boot sector&#93; 55 MB
    &#91;c:&#93; label XP (NTFS)
    solaris partitions...
    2nd physical drive
    &#91;d:&#93; label Data (FAT32) (about 17 GB)
i'd like to mount my FAT32 drive. according to man mount and man pcfs, i thought i'd do seomething like:
    bash-3.00# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0:d /mnt/data
    which yields:
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0:d is already mounted or /mnt/data is busy
theres nothign in the /mnt/data folder. as far as i can tell, the drive isn't mounted. am i naming hte wrong device? im reading this "device-special:logical drive" stuff and i guess it's not making sense. i've included some more info below.
hopefully after this i can mount the drive in the vfstab, but if not i suppose ill be back.

    thanks!!!

    thanks martin
i think i was trying to mount a SCSI drive instead of IDE that I have... thanks for clearing that up. i was also frustrated with teh :c part, I think I forgot about the 1st partition part.
im under the impression that c0d0p1:c is my first physical drive, which is NTFS because of:
    bash-3.00# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p1 /mnt/data
mount: /dev/dsk/c0d1p1:c is not a DOS filesystem.
but then why would c0d1p1 also yield:
    bash-3.00# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d1p1 /mnt/data
mount: /dev/dsk/c0d0p1, c0d0p2 is not a DOS filesystem.
then again c0d0p0, c0d0p2, and c0d1p0 yields the same...
is there a way to list the devices present, or do i have to throw knives at the wind? does anyone understand the naming schema of cN and dN? man pcfs and man mount don't help a whole lot.
i dont see anything helpful in the vfstab
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
    fd - /dev/fd fd - no -
    /proc - /proc proc - no -

  • Mounting zfs in Solaris 10

Currently I have three hard drives with:
    Disk1: Solaris 10
    Disk2: SXDE
    Disk3: OpenSolaris (ZFS)
What is the proper way to mount Disk3 from Solaris 10 or SXDE

    Hi
I think that the command that you need is 'zpool import' (on its own it will list pools that are available to import).
You may have problems if the version of ZFS on disk 3 is higher than the drivers on either Solaris 10 or SXDE (I recently tried importing an SXCE created ZFS partition into FreeBSD 7, but it failed for this reason).

    4. create database command.
    5. post scripts like catalog and catproc

  • Mount FAT32 USB flash storage in Solaris 10

    Hi guys, girls, and undecided.
I've just upgraded my Winblows XP laptop to dual-boot Solaris 10. I've been trying in vain to get a few things working, the most annoying of which is my USB flash storage disk.
I've tried 'pkill -HUP vold', to no avail
'iostat -En' shows my CDRW/DVD drive, but no USB drive.
    Help would be muchly appreciated.

Congratulations on your choice of Os ;-)
To solve this problem you can try and create a directory called /rmdisk , then start vold running:
    /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
    /etc/init.d/volmgt start
if you are lucky your USB flash will show up under /rmdisk/<name> after a few seconds.
If not you should be able to see the flash with cfgadm, which list the status of USB ports (among other things).
Solaris should automatically create a /dev/dsk/ and /dev/rdsk/ entries for your flash memory, if its not automatically mounted by vold, try and stop vold using
    /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
Then do a cd /dev/dsk and run an ls -lart, the USB devices should be among the last devices in that list, then mount it using:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/<device> /some/directory
the device should end with s2 or p2, some flash devices might also need :c, aka /dev/dsk/<device>:c, it depends how its configured.
See man mount_pcfs for more information...
Hope this helps a bit (:

    regards

Hmm, the mount -F pcfs option should support FAT32 filesystems.
Anyway, what mount options do you use? You could try and mount it with -o hidden, i've seen that it helps with certain devices, also check sunsolve for pcfs related patches.

    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 /mnt/windows
mount: /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is already mounted or /mnt/windows is busy
/dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is not mounted, when I navigate to mnt/windows it is void..
    what is wrong?
    thanks to all...

Well, you can't stand in the directory you are trying to mount, if you stand in '/mnt/windows' you will not be able to mount anything over it. (thats what 'busy' means in this context).
Basically your pwd can be anything except the mountpoint.
Hence, try a 'cd /' first, then try again.

& I tried making ZFS file system on pendrive,
    zpool create myusb c2t0d0p0
    zpool list myusb
Now I can see the file system, however windows doesnt recosgnise it now :( screwd again !!!Right, Windows has no idea what ZFS is so there is no way that it can mount the drive.
In order for it to work on both Windows and Solaris then you need to format the device with a filesystem in common.
The most common way to do this is to format it with a FAT32 filesystem or you could use NTFS if you load up the drivers for it on the Solaris side.
After you format it FAT32 then Windows should have no problems with it since it's a native format and Solaris vold mounts my FAT32 USB devices automatically.

  • How to search and mount partitions in solaris

    Hi
I am new to Oracle solaris. I have a dual boot of windows S03 and solaris. I want to install Open Office which I downloaded and copied to D drive when I was in windows. Now how do I navigate to the D drive in solaris. When I select Places/Computer, I see CD drive and a folder named File System . I don't see any other drives.
I would like to know what is the GUI option to navigate to the drives. I remember, Ubuntu and Fedora do show the drives. Please help me
    Regards
    Srinivas

Do you know if the Windows partition is NTFS or Fat32? If it's NTFS the only way you can see it is with additional third party software. If it's FAT32 or some type of FAT partition then you can mount it first and then it will show up under the GUI.
The easiest way to do it would be to burn it to dvd or copy it to usb and then use:
    sudo /path/setup to install OO.

    </td></tr></table>
    Hello.
    1) Check if the device entry /dev/dsk/c2t0d0s0 exists
(by typing ls -L /dev/dsk/c2t0d0s0 - a block file must be displayed)
    2) Are you sure the disk is /dev/dsk/c2t0d0s<u><b>0</b></u> and not /dev/dsk/c2t0d0s<u><b>2</b></u>?
    3) Make sure that the /mnt directory exists and is not mounted.
    I hope this helps.

  • Mounting NTFS on Solaris 10

How can i munt the NTFS partition of my Windows XP on Solaris 10?
    Can somebody help me????
    It can be possible?

Package FSWmisc now mounts NTFS partitions directly. No special mount_ntfs program required. It is based on Martin Rosenau's mount_ntfs. Package FSWpart comes with prtpart, which displays all the partitions, including extended partitions, and partition types.
    See http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/binfiles/README.FSWfsmisc.txt
    Download from http://www.belenix.org/binfiles/FSWpart.tar.gz and http://www.belenix.org/binfiles/FSWfsmisc.tar.gz
Install with pkgadd -d . (in the directory you unpacked the above two tarballs).
    Here's a sample /etc/vfstab line:
/dev/dsk/c0d0p1     -     /c     ntfs     -     no     roAnd sample output from mount and xlsmounts:
    # mount
    /c on 127.0.0.1:/ remote/read only/setuid/devices/port=33249/public/vers=2/proto=udp/xattr/dev=4700004 on Sun Nov 26 19:42:29 2006
    # xlsmounts
PHYSICAL DEVICE                 LOGICAL DEVICE      FS    PID         ADDR Mounted on
      /dev/dsk/c0d0p1                /dev/dsk/c0d0p1    ntfs   3354  127.0.0.1:/ /cAlso both mount_ntfs and FSWfsmisc work with Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris ("Nevada").
