Mounting, Suspending (hal?) acpid issues

Hi
after installing on my new Laptop, i got some problems.
I am using KDEmod4, HAL and dbus are installed, but i cannot mount a usb-drive as user. As root from the console, there is no problem, but i want kde4 to mount the thumpdrive if needed...
The problem when i klick the showed thumpdrive in Dolphin:
An error while accessing 'Volume(vfat)', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.DevicePermissionDeniedByPolicy: org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removeable no <--(action, result)
I already tried the solution from the wiki, but no difference, the problem persists. Is this the PolicyKit-problem (i also tried the ck-session thing, but no difference either)? While if got the same setting at my desktop-PC, and there it works flawless (it was not upgraded for about 2 weeks now).
Next thing is, that i want a specific suspend/hibernate setting (well, i dont think this setting is uncommon). When i press the power-button, the system should hibernate. I am using pm-hibernate which works fine. When i close the Lid, the system should suspend to ram (pm-suspend also works fine), when i open the Lid again, it should resume from the suspended session. I tried to realize this in KDE, but all suspend/hibernate settings were ignored. I also could not suspend/hibernate from the Leave part in Kickoff. But the buttons are there an clickable, also in Systemsettings KDE says that suspend and hibernate should work, but no reaction at all when klicking the buttons.
Having xfce-installed at first, i also tried suspend from it, but from there i also got something about orf.freedesktop.Hal..., i haven't noted it before i removed xfce again (also hal?).
I also tried to realize this with acpid, changing the handler.sh according to the wiki-entries. It works, more of less, but it has some strange behaviour. When i press the Powerbutton, the system hibernates as it should. When i press the button again to resume, resuming works, but after 2 seconds in the resumed session, it hibernates again. After the second hibernating and resuming, it works (but than i am faster with a reboot ). Also the sleep-button where i want to pm-suspend does suspend, but waking up again  does not work with this button. If i press the power button to weak up again, the system resums not fully and starts to hibernate...
The user is in power, storage, optical groups. I also tried to put it in the hal and udev groups, but no difference.

I found a solution to the first problem in this thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65070&p=1
The suspend/hibernate also changed when i added the wheel-groups a hal-admin. When i press the suspend to ram/disk buttons in KDE, the screens goes black in both cases, but in suspend to ram: the screen is not turned off, and i cannot resume by pressing anything (also not the power button works), the machine remains running, and i can only do a hard-reboot.
in suspend to disk: the screen is off, the machine is also off, but when i press the power-button the session is not resumed, instead the system boots like when i have halted it.

  • 13" MacBook boots to hal.dll issue - Help!

    I recently tried to install Windows XP using bootcamp, I read somewhere the section that bootcamp makes needed to be wiped or deleted, so it doesn't use the default structure. So I deleted the partition, I selected Windows to install to the new space. Although, it installed XP in the NTFS layout, and then refused to boot up, claiming hal.dll was missing.
    Everytime I start the MacBook it boots to this screen, I have tried MANY commands for Windows through using the advice of others who have had this issue, but none worked. After trying and trying, it eventually claimed something had been corrupted. I cannot remove the disk and cannot get it to boot to OSX. I have tried CommandOF to try and get the disk out but nothing happened.
    I have tried almost every thing I can think of, could someone please give me some advice and help me solve this?!
    Thank you!

    No joy unfortunately, it claims 'There is no floppy disk or CD in the drive', when there clearly is. I do not know the letter allocations of each partition or drive, so cannot try it another way.
    Is there any way I can just get back into OSX and delete the Windows partition? I have really tried to use key commands on boot up but it just goes to the Windows partition.
    Thanks,
    Max

  • Suspend to ram issue

    I'm having trouble with s2ram on my macbook.    When I run the command it appears to work, so I think my system is whitelisted.  However, when I try to unsuspend it (pressing the power button), my screen is dead.  I believe it's successfully suspending and unsuspending because I can hear it, and I was able to run sudo reboot to get my system to restart.  Thanks for any help.

    I remember a while back having this issue, and I believe that these boot options resolved it. I have the 1.83GHz Core2Duo model.
    ok that didn't work either
    I do remember when installing the uswsusp pkg that it said something about how the new suspend does not rely on kernel parameters, but instead /etc/suspend.conf
    this is what mine looks like:
    snapshot device = /dev/snapshot
    resume device = <path_to_resume_device_file>
    #image size = 350000000
    suspend loglevel = 2
    #compute checksum = y
    #compress = y
    #encrypt = y
    #early writeout = y
    #splash = y
    I assume I need to replace the path to resume device file with something?

    Hello fellow archers, I'm following the acpid wiki to suspend on pressing the sleep/suspend button and for some reason pm-suspend is not executed. Here are the relevant bits:

    It's getting logged but nothing happens.

    I don't think it was getting logged like you think.
    localhost xxxx: ACPI group/action undefined: button/suspend / SUSP
                                 ^^^^^
    The 'group/' is not in the snippet you provided.  It must have been generated by some other part of your script.

  • Disc Drive Mounting Problem causing haywire issues...

    I've been having an issue that has gotten progressively worse and would appreciate the community's experience to figure it out...
    I repair the disk permissions regularly, keeps things backed up and updated...sourcing what the actual problem could help me figure out if it's a preferences issue or something more to the core of my OS that would require a clean install...so here's what I know.
    Originally a few smaller applications (such as firefox and a media server app) started to hang, eventually freezing the computer. Mounting and ejecting external drives started to hang as well. If I went to restart or shutdown, the process would hang until I pulled out the firewire cables of my external drives. That seems to be the real heart of it, as soon as I pull out the external drives it has no issue. Anyone heard of that or know which core file I would need to replace?

    By pulling the cable on your external disks while they are still being used you have probably corrupted them to the point where they are cause you problems. My starting point to fix your system would be to repair your disks including the system disk. I am not talking about repairing permission here. I am talking about repairing the directory structure for them. To do the system disk you need to boot from another disk. I suggest booting from the install DVD for you Mac. Let us know the results of that.

  • Mounting data partition + Finder issue

    Hello,
    I have now 2 disks in my MBP (SSD + HDD in Optibay). I want to use the HDD for data only storage and I would like to mount the disk in the folder
    ~/Data
    So I created the dir and mounted the partition manually to test it :
    sudo mount_hfs /dev/disk1s2 /Users/me/Data/
    It works but there is a little annoyance:
    I open Finder and go to my Home dir. Now I enter the Data directory where my partition is mounted. First, the sidebar does not show now that I'm in my user directory. Now if I want to step one level up using Cmd + UpArrow, I do not go back to my home folder as expected but to a list of all my disks.
    Is there a way to fix that ?

    I also tried with the "nobrowse" option but the behavior is the same.

  • KT3 Ultra2BR, MS-6280E Raid, suspend, and other issues

    Hello!
    Well, actually my box performs admirably. There are some annoying quirks tho, which you guys might have some solution to it.
    1. My system have been working so fine, with ABSOLUTELY no problems. Things running fine means no errors, no BSOD, not even crashes, but one thing actually: SUSPEND. Everytime I purposedly or accidentally press the suspend button (either on windows' shutdown menu or the suspend button on my keyboar), the screen goes blank, suspended. When I wake it back, it throw a BSOD right on my face! I tried changing S1 suspend state to S3. With S3, things goes even worse with the system hangs on the videocard bios display. Anyone successfully implemented S1 and/or S3 suspend states? With this I had to disable/hide the suspend button, so no more accidents. Anyway if anyone can give  me some solution I would gladly take.
    2. This one refers to RAID versions of the mobo. I get to wait about 15 seconds on "Starting WindowsXP" boot screen because I enable the Promise Fasttrak133 RAID controller. I have to enable it cuz I have many IDE devices plugged to my mobo. When I disable it, the boot up screen only show for about 2 seconds (as most of you would already know in non-RAID versions). What's with this RAID thing? Before this mobo, I used ABIT VP6 with highpoint RAID controller and these extraordinary long wait times did not occur. Well, just the wait times though, after windowsxp booted, things went fine. But this is annoying sometimes.
    That is all I think,
    For anything from attention to solutions you guys are going to give, I would say Thank You.
    d

    Hello again,
    Thank you for the quick response.
    Well, I haven't tried reinstalling the windows since if I do so I would have to set up everything from scratch and that will waste much time. But again I think reinstalling windows can help fix things around, I hope. I will do if time allows. Thanks. Anyways I wonder whether YOU could implement the S1 and/or S3 state successfully with your system, can you?
    Also I'd like to update that the wait time is not 15 seconds, but actually 40 seconds!!! Isn't that annoying? Well, the wait times diminishes if I restart my computer from hibernation, which provide no wait times and my system could start in merely seconds. Well, that makes me wonder tho. Is the wait time really necessary? If so, why restarting from hibernation need no such wait time at all? Could there be a driver update or bios update to address this problem?
    And again there's another problem just risen lately. Its shutdown problem. Occasionally when  I shutdown my system, it shuts down but immediately start up again. It's like the shutting down mechanism failed. This didn't happen before, just recently. Any clue why this is happening? I'm afraid the jump from immediate restart after shutdown will eventually break my harddrives.
    Thank you for your attention,
    regards
    d

  • Insane HAL security issue

    About a day ago I started receiving this error whenever I insert a DVD or try to shutdown my laptop:
    A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Eject" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
    After much research, I'm still at a total loss. My "/etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf" file indicates hal is looking for users of groups "storage" or "power" as it should, and my user is in both groups. However I still get the error message. If I change <policy user="0"> to <policy user="my_username"> it works just fine. So telling HAL which user to allow works, but telling HAL which groups to allow does not work.
    Could the problem be with HAL, or is it maybe with my group file (and to be honest, I don't fully understand the intricacies between group, shadow, gshadow, passwd, etc...)
    Any help would be most excellent. This is my first actual post, but I've used these forums countless times for help.
    Also, if anyone needs to seen anything, like my /etc/group or hal.conf I'll put them up.

    Maybe this is related: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12221

  • Mounting issue.

    Hiya.
    So, I've found myself in a weird situation that I have never encountered before. If I put a CD or DVD in to my computer, I can play it with VLC, rip it with Sound Juicer/dvd::rip etc. but when it comes to actually mounting it I get issues. Thunar doesn't mount the audio CDs at all (they don't show up in the sidebar, I mean) but it does attempt to mount other CDs, DVDs and removable USB drives. I have the volume manager enabled. However, it fails each time with the following error.
    Failed to mount "Bleach 1"
    Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
    Rejected send message, 1 matched rules;
    type="method_call", sender=":1.35" (uid=1000 pid=2470 comm="exo-mount)
    interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume"
    member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0
    destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1870 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
    Like I said, I can watch DVDs and listen to CDs fine, but can't get at the files on them. Additionally, if I was to do "ls /media/cd" or "ls /media/dvd" there are no files to see, so I'm not sure what's going on. I was under the impression that discs and devices have to be mounted before you could access them.
    If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it a lot. So far I haven't been able to make any progress with this.
    Kind regards,
    Joel.

    BTW:
    My user is a membr of the groups wheel and storage, but could still not mount drives without hal.conf being edited as mentioned above...
    My user was also a member of both those groups. Seems that editing hal.conf is necessary regardless. As for making sure it's nice and secure, I just copied and pasted the following block as a whole without reading what it did and changed the line "<policy at_console="true">" to "<policy group="wheel">".
    <!-- Only allow users at the local console to manipulate devices -->

    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LightSensor"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"

    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Storage.Removable"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Crypto"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
    send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.WakeOnLan"/>
    </policy>
    I didn't know at the time if I wanted all members of wheel to be able to do all of those things, so I planned on going through it again later to make any changes I felt necessary. It turns out, the only one that other members of wheel need is storage, so what I have now done is cut that section down to just the storage bit and added the entire block with "<policy user="joel">" (where joel is the account name I use) instead. That way, only I and root can make use of everything within that block.
    Hope that makes sense

  • [solved] hal won't mount volumes after update

    Every time I try to mount it, hal gives me an error:
    Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.12" (uid=1000 pid=3528 comm="pcmanfm) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=3228 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
    Followed by:
    Directory doesn't exist!
    I really don't know what the deal is, and google doesn't turn up much of anything.
    Edit: This is for all drives not mounted at boot, same error.
    Drives can be manually mounted with no problems.
    Edit: This happens regardless of file manager used.
    Solution: In my case I needed ck-launch-session added to my ~/.xinitrc for mounting to work. So, this:
    exec openbox-session
    Became this:
    exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    If this doesn't work for you, following the instructions on the hal wiki page as seen in anonymous_user's post (#11) most likely will.

    I fixed it by removing policykit from my machine and restarting. The new version of hal drops policykit as a dependency. I don't know whats the reasoning behind this, as hal doesn't seem to support polkit integration (at least there is no compile flag for it). So policykit now seems to interfere with the new hal package.
    Edit: Spelling
    hal requires consolekit and polkit is required by it. How the disable consolekit integration bit works I don't understand.
    You can disable consolekit by editing the PKGBUILD:
    --disable-console-kit --disable-policy-kit --disable-acl-management
    EDIT: When building the package from scratch, it seems --enable-consolekit needs --enable-policykit, i might be wrong
    EDIT: I was wrong

    Did you ever encounter these error messages:
    [cyt@arch ~]$ dmesg | tail
    NTFS driver 2.1.29 [Flags: R/W MODULE].
    NTFS-fs error (device sdb5): parse_options(): Unrecognized mount option locale.
    NTFS-fs warning (device sdb5): parse_options(): Option utf8 is no longer supported, using option nls=utf8. Please use option nls=utf8 in the future and make sure utf8 is compiled either as a module or into the kernel.
    I do not add those hal related policy files, and just uncheck the "mount by user" option.

  • Cant mount usb sticks with fat32 ISO-8859-1 2.6.31-ARCH

    when trying to mount my usb sticks from xfce4 desktop(halmount).
    Following error occurs (as told by dmesg).
    FAT: IO charset ISO-8859-1 not found
    First i suspected hal being the culprit but now im not so sure anymore.
    im using stock 2.6.31-ARCH.
    when i checked the .config for the stock kernel CONFIG_NLS_ISO8859_1=y is enabled in the kernelconfig, and also everything below to support fat32.
    CONFIG_FAT_FS=m
    CONFIG_MSDOS_FS=m
    CONFIG_VFAT_FS=m
    CONFIG_FAT_DEFAULT_CODEPAGE=437
    CONFIG_FAT_DEFAULT_IOCHARSET="iso8859-1"
    CONFIG_NTFS_FS=m
    but when i list the modules nls_iso8859-1.ko is missing.
    #~ls -a /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso*
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-13.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-14.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-15.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-2.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-3.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-4.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-5.ko

    So i suspect the newest kernel broke mounting with hal.

    Based on the information given in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82176, I changed in /etc/rc.conf from LOCALE=en_GB.iso88591 to LOCALE=en_GB.utf8, uncommented en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8  in /etc/locale.gen, issued # locale-gen and after a reboot, I was able to mount my usb sticks again.
    However, now I get "FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!" in dmesg. Is this something, I need to worry about...?

  • Difference with CD auto-mount between OL 5.7 and OEL 5.4

    Hello,
    I'm experiencing a difference when auto-mounting a CD between OL 5.7 and OEL 5.4 (x86_64).
    Under OEL 5.4, a CD does not have "execute" privileges.
    The mount command shows the following relevant entry:
    Oracle Linux 5.7:
    /dev/hdc on /media/Oracle_11gR2_x86-64 type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,uid=0)Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4
    /dev/hdc on /media/Oracle_11gR2_x86-64 type udf (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=0)I also wonder why there is a difference when using Ubuntu. In Ubuntu Linux (11.04) I can address the problem by installing "autofs" and modifying /etc/auto.misc to include the "exec" mount option. For instance:
    cd              -fstype=iso9660,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec :/dev/cdromHowever, under Oracle Enterprise Linux, modifying /etc/auto.misc has no affect.
    I suspect the the differences are related to gnome-mount and HAL. I know how to work-around the problem, but I wonder if someone knows more details and when and what was changed regarding this issue between OEL 5.4 and OL 5.7
    Thanks and kind regards.

    Meanwhile I found the source of information:

    5.6_Technical_Notes
    Prior to this update, the "noexec" option was enforced when mounting CDs, preventing scripts on that media from being run automatically. However, this also prevented applications that rely on executing from media from working correctly. Since the intended level of protection provided by this feature is minimal, and there are other ways to achieve it, the feature has been removed and the "noexec" option is no longer enforced.

  • External Hard Drive not mounting on bootup

    I have a USB2.0 Hard Drive formatted with ntfs, which holds my music. I have an fstab entry for it using ntfs-3g and I can mount it fine after booting up. But the drive doesn't automatically mount like it should. It looks like the system is mounting the fstab entries before it is finished detecting my external drive. Anything I can do to fix this?

    fwojciec wrote:I let my external ntfs drive be mounted by hal - I have no entry for it in /etc/fstab.  In order to have it mounted with read/write privileges I had to create a hal policy like this wiki page describes: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL … ntfs-3g.29
    I'm not sure if this solution is what you're looking for though...
    I actually tried using hal to do it and it didn't work right for some reason.

  • Bootcamp Partition Will Not Mount - Size Bootcamp Partition Will Not Mount - Also Size Discrepancies

    I have bootcamp installed on an internal hard drive in my Mac Pro running 10.8.5.  This HD had two partitions, one of which I had 200GB allocated for my Windows install.  I reached a point where I was at nearly 100% capacity on that drive and needed more room.  This is what I did:
    Used Disk Utility to shrink the Mac OS Extended partition.
    Erased free space on that partition.
    Booted back into Windows and used MiniTool to extend the bootcamp partition to unallocated space.
    MinoTool then performed a restart and finished it's job upon startup.
    I am still able to boot into Windows and Mac just fine and I did create a backup of each OS before starting.
    I have two issues now, however.  Parallels no long recognized that Bootcamp partition.  I decided to delete that VM and I had to uninstall Parallels completely anyways due to an upgrage isse to Parallels 9.  After upgrading, Creating a VM from my BC was not an option.  This is because the BC partition will not mount, it is greyed out in Disk Utitlity.
    I tried installing Tuxera NTFS and the disk still cannot be mounted.
    The other issue is that Disk Utility does not show the Bootcamp partition with the correct size.  It still shows it with the original 200GB but does show that the Mac Partition was shrunk.  In Windows, however, either using MiniTool or Windows Disk Managment, it shows the correct sizes for the partitions.
    I'll attach a screenshot of DU.
    I would like to be able to mount the drive successfully so that I can use the partition once again for Parallels.
    This is the system.log display when attempting to mount the BOOTCAMP partition and when disabling Tuxera from the system preferences:

    Josh,
    I will defer to Christopher on correcting the GPT, but I agree it is incorrect. On a much simpler, single disk Macmini with Bootcamp...
