Mouse/keyboard events lost during sound events

I have a new MacbookPro (October 2011, MacBookPro8,2) with 4Gb RAM running latest 10.6.8, and I am extremely frustrated by periodic loss of mouse events (movement freezes, then jumps) and keyboard events (loss of keystrokes) whenever a sound alert is made. Am I the only person experiencing this?

I should also add a related behavior, repeated keypresses. I do a lot of work on connected unix/linux machines using terminal. Sometimes I will be navigating directories and hit <tab> for command completion, and unexpectedly get the screen scrolling as if I had typed it 100 times!

• C# COM server events "lost" when raising events while Excel is in edit mode

I posted this question on StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23798443/c-sharp-com-server-events-lost-when-raising-events-while-excel-is-in-edit-mode) but did not receive a good answer, so I'm trying my luck here.
I have an in-proc COM server written in C# (using .NET Framework 3.5) that raises COM events based on this example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd8bf0x3(v=vs.90).aspx
Excel VBA is the most common client of my COM server. I’ve found that when I raise COM events while Excel is in edit mode (e.g. a cell is being edited) the event is “lost”. Meaning, the VBA event handler is never called (even after the Excel
edit mode is finished) and the call to the C# event delegate passes through and fails silently with no exceptions being thrown. Do you know how I can detect this situation on my COM server? Or better still, make the event delegate call block until
Excel is out of edit mode?
I have tried:
Inspecting the properties of the event delegate – could not find any property to indicate that the event failed to be raised on the client.
Calling the event delegate directly from a worker thread and from the main thread – event not raised on the client, no exceptions thrown on the server.
Pushing the event delegate onto a worker thread’s Dispatcher and invoking it synchronously – event not raised on the client, no exceptions thrown on the server.
Pushing the event delegate onto the main thread’s Dispatcher and invoking it synchronously and asynchronously – event not raised on the client, no exceptions thrown on the server.
Checking the status code of the Dispatcher.BeginInvoke call (using DispatcherOperation.Status) – the status is always ends with “Completed”, and is never in “Aborted” state.
Creating an out-of-proc C# COM server exe and tested raising the events from there – same result, event handler never called, no exceptions.
Since I get no indication that the event was not raised on the client, I cannot handle this situation in my code.
I have tested this with Excel 2010 and Excel 2013.
Here is a simple test case. The C# COM server:
namespace ComServerTest
public delegate void EventOneDelegate();

Excel VBA client code:
Public WithEvents managerObj As ComServerTest.ManagerClass
Public g_nCounter As Long
Sub TestEventsFromWorkerThread()
Set managerObj = New ComServerTest.ManagerClass
Dim dtStart As Date
dtStart = DateTime.Now
g_nCounter = 0
Debug.Print "Start"
' Starts the worker thread which will raise the EventOne event every few seconds
managerObj.StartThreadWork ""

Set managerObj = New ComServerTest.ManagerClass
Debug.Print "Start"
' This call will raise the EventOne event
managerObj.MethodAAA ""
Debug.Print "Done"
End Sub
' EventOne handler
Private Sub managerObj_EventOne()
Debug.Print "EventOne " & g_nCounter
g_nCounter = g_nCounter + 1
End Sub
This problem also occurs for a C++ MFC Automation server that raises COM events. If I raise the COM event from the main thread when Excel is in edit mode, the event handler is never called. No errors or exceptions are thrown on the server,
similar to my C# COM server. However, if I use the Global Interface Table to marshal the event sink interface from the main thread
back to the main thread, then invoking the event - it will block while Excel is in edit mode. (I also used COleMessageFilter to disable the busy dialog and not responding dialogs, otherwise I'd receive the exception:
RPC_E_CANTCALLOUT_INEXTERNALCALL It is illegal to call out while inside message filter.)
Knowing that, I tried to do the same on my C# COM server. I could instantiate the Global Interface Table (using the definition from pinvoke.net) and the message filter (using the IOleMessageFilter definition from MSDN). However, the event still
gets "lost" and does not block while Excel is in edit mode.
Here's my additional C# code to try to make use of the Global Interface Table:
namespace ComServerTest
// Global Interface Table definition from pinvoke.net
ComImport,
InterfaceType(ComInterfaceType.InterfaceIsIUnknown),
Guid("00000146-0000-0000-C000-000000000046")
interface IGlobalInterfaceTable
uint RegisterInterfaceInGlobal(
[MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.IUnknown)] object pUnk,
[In] ref Guid riid);
void RevokeInterfaceFromGlobal(uint dwCookie);
[return: MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.IUnknown)]
object GetInterfaceFromGlobal(uint dwCookie, [In] ref Guid riid);
ComImport,
Guid("00000323-0000-0000-C000-000000000046") // CLSID_StdGlobalInterfaceTable
class StdGlobalInterfaceTable /* : IGlobalInterfaceTable */
public class ManagerClass : IManagerClass
//...skipped code already mentioned in earlier sample above...
//...also skipped the message filter code for brevity...
private Guid IID_IDispatch = new Guid("00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046");
private IGlobalInterfaceTable m_GIT = null;
public ManagerClass()
//...skipped code already mentioned in earlier sample above...
m_GIT = (IGlobalInterfaceTable)new StdGlobalInterfaceTable();
public void FireEventOne()
// Using the GIT to marshal the (event?) interface from the main thread back to the main thread (like the MFC Automation server).
// Should we be marshalling the ManagerEvents interface pointer instead? How do we get at it?
uint uCookie = m_GIT.RegisterInterfaceInGlobal(this, ref IID_IDispatch);
ManagerClass mgr = (ManagerClass)m_GIT.GetInterfaceFromGlobal(uCookie, ref IID_IDispatch);
mgr.EventOne(); // when Excel is in edit mode, event handler is never called and does not block, event is "lost"
m_GIT.RevokeInterfaceFromGlobal(uCookie);
I’d like my C# COM server to behave in a similar way to the MFC Automation server. Is this possible? I think I should be registering the ManagerEvents interface pointer in the GIT but I don't know how to get at it? I tried using Marshal.GetComInterfaceForObject(this,
typeof(ManagerEvents)) but that just throws an exception: System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid.
Thanks.

Hi Jason-F,

Do you mean you didn't raise EventOne event? EventOne handler like following?
' EventOne handler
Private Sub managerObj_EventOne()
Debug.Print "EventOne " & g_nCounter
g_nCounter = g_nCounter + 1
End Sub

• Events lost during event merge

I was merging two events when iPhoto (v9.5.1) appeared to have crashed and lost almost all of my events. There are about a dozen events remaining (out of at least 100). However, the photos within the remaining events are not the ones I originally put in those events. The 19,000+ photos seem to be randomly distributed throughout the remaining events. About 18,000 of the photos are now all lumped together in one of the events I was attempting to merge. Also, the photos no longer have their original names/numbers. Unfortunately Time Machine had quit backing up for some reason, and I have no backup of my library to restore from. I have tried the four steps outlined in the recommended steps to take (ie repair permissions, rebuild library, etc) without success.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Last chance:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• Mouse Clicked gets lost some times.

Hello All,
The scenario is that i have a tree and the doubleclick on the tree node openes a view with some information. Also the node has some childrens. Sometimes when i double click the node, the tree node gets expanded but my view does not get opened. This was due to mouseclicked does not arrive with click count as 2.
In my code double click handling is done in the mouseclicked event. The code looks like
public void mouseclicked(MouseEvent ev) {
if(ev.getClickCount() == 2) {
.......//Opens a view
In some cases when i double click, mouse clicked is triggered only once with click count as one. But the mousepressed and mousereleased is triggered twice with clickcount 1 and 2 resp. I am not sure is this a valid behaviour. Please find below the traces of events.

I just checked mouseClicked.. and its working fine for me.
tree.addMouseListener(new MouseListener(){
public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if(e.getClickCount() == 2)
System.out.println("mouseClicked");
public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent e) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
public void mouseExited(MouseEvent e) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
});If we double click on a node which is having child nodes, then it will collapse/expand when double click on it.
In all cases I am getting the display "mouseClicked" when doing double click.

Solutions?

No, I never really found an easy solution. I believe it is an issue with some corruption in the iTunes database on the specific device. In my case, both my iPad and iPhone now show duplicate stream songs if viewed through iTunes on my Mac, but they show different songs. A couple years ago I had a similar issue on my iPhone, and Apple support suggested I back up the phone, completely reset it, and then restore it from the backup. It did work, so I imagine it would probably work for my current issues with the iPhone and iPad. But resetting and restoring an iPad or iPhone always makes me a little nervous that something will get lost. When I did reset/restore the iPhone, I do have to say, the restore process was 100% perfect and I did not lose any data at all even though Apple support said I might. If you try to go that route, I would suggest backing the device up both to a computer through iTunes, and to the iCloud so that you have a double backup.
None of this really resolves the issue with how the iTunes databases are becoming corrupted on the apple devices though, so it is very likely to happen again until they fix it. I have been unable to determine if there were any specific actions or conditions which caused the corruption to happen in the first place.
Might be worth another call to Apple support, or dropping in the local Apple store if you have one near by.

• SWT_AWT mouse/keyboard event trouble

Hello everyone,
I have created an ActiveX Component with Visual C++ that uses a WEmbeddedFrame to contain a Swing based GUI. I have copied the code from the SWT_AWT class in the SWT toolkit and it worked fine up to JDK 1.5.0_03.
Starting with JDK 1.5.0_04 the Swing GUI does no longer receive Mouse/keyboard events.
I have read through all available material concerning this problem and I have tried the two possible solutions that these documents suggest:
- called addNotify() on the embedded frame
- inserted a heavyweight container (java.awt.Panel) between Embedded Frame and the Swing GUI
However, no luck. The GUI displays fine but does not respond to user actions.
Does anybody have an idea what might have changed from 1.5.0_03 to 1.5.0_04, that could help me solve this puzzle?
Thank you very much in advance,
Helmut

SWT works up to 1 tree and two text components only. If you have more than that, you windows will get tainted. Basically it's useless to wirte any useful programs for Windows. You never get comaptible latest look from it both mac and windows. Don't waste time for learning it. You better spend time for learning other things. If AWT/Swing is not good enough, learn native languages such as Visual C++/Basic! I have to say SWT wasn't meant to give us better programming platform!

• I lost all calendar events and contacts during iTunes backup

i lost all calendar events and contacts during iTunes backup
I think my wife had an old apple ID on the phone and never backs up her device. She lost all contacts and calendar events. any help?

It would default to whatever account you have set for default. If you were using Exchange, it would sync to that. However, the settings for syncing are set up in iTunes. You would need to check to see what settings were in iTunes for syncing the information. It could be a supported application on the computer, or a cloud service as I said earlier.
On my personal phone, it will default to my iPhone calendar which I sync with Outlook on my computer. I can select the Exchange account if I want, but my default is what I sync with Outlook.

• Events getting lost during bubble

I have spent one too many hours fooling around with this.
This is just a simple test, but I have an mxml component named
Test.mxml that is dispatching an event. I also have a
FrontController.as that is listening for events. When an event is
dispatched in Test, FrontController is not responding to it. When
the code is placed into one file it works dandy, so i am not sure
where the problem lies. I am invoking FrontController at the
Application. Thanks for helping me out on this. Its driving me mad.
Here are my files:
Main.mxml
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
xmlns="*" xmlns:control="controller.* xmlns:nav="views.nav.*">
<!-- Controller: Controls all application events -->
<control:FrontController/>
<nav:navigation top="8" left="9" right="90"
bottom="609"/>
</mx:Application>
FrontController.as
package controller
import mx.core.Application;
import flash.events.Event;
public class FrontController
// Get a reference to the Application object here
private var app:Main = Application.application as Main;
public function FrontController(){
app.addEventListener("SomeEvent", someHandler);
private function someHandler(e:Event):void{
trace("Hello my name is Borat");
Test.mxml
<mx:TitleWindow xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
xmlns="*"
creationComplete="initComp()"
showCloseButton="true">
<mx:Metadata>
[Event(name="SomeEvent", type="flash.events.Event")]
</mx:Metadata>
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
private function initComp():void{
var eventObj:Event = new Event("SomeEvent");
dispatchEvent(eventObj);
]]>
</mx:Script>
</mx:TitleWindow>

But... Here I can see that your listening for events wich are
dispatched by the Application not your Test.mxml component. So, if
the App dispatches an Event your front controller will be able to
catch it, but if another component (like you Test.mxml) dispatches
an event your front controller will not be able to catch it.
Also I can see that your not making reference to your
Test.mxml component in your application.

• Sound lost during archive importation

Hi
I have a video archive, imported from a Sony DSR 500 camera, with 2 sound tracks. When I watch it on the "importation from a camera" panel, it is ok I can hear both of the sound tracks, one and two.
I imported it in Final Cut Pro X, and I simply lost the sound track 2. I can't hear it, and the 2nd green sound track is empty.
What can I do, or what did I do wrong before the import ?
Thank you.
Fred

There are some Audio options to either check or uncheck on the Import tab of the Preferences window under the Final Cut Pro menu. The options would present stereo or mono, remove silent tracks, etc. That's one place to look. The second is click on one of your clips in the event browser or timeline and look at the inspector window under the Audio tab. There are options there for presenting the audio as Dual Mono, Stereo, Surround Sound, etc. It may be your mic recorded stereo, but your camera was set to mono. Many cameras record in stereo but use an external mic that is mono. Assumming that all of that is okay, I would simply put on a set of headphones and plug them into your camera and play the clip there. Do you hear sound on both left and right? If so, then it would seem the problem really is in FCP X. I know from experience, when I only have one of the two audio tracks, I can usally fix it in the inspector window under the Audio tab in the Volume and Pan settings area and specifically in the Pan Mode drop down menu. Best wishes.

• I need to get sound events from sounds embedded in a MovieClip

I'm working on a SoundManager class for a game development
platform. Unfortunately, I can't leverage the Sound class because
the requirements are that the sounds for an application would be
embedded in individual MovieClip objects and set to stream as the
clip plays.
The idea is that this would allow third-party developers to
make simple edits to the sounds by using the envelope controls for
the embedded sounds. I can manually fire an event when the sound
finishes by calling a custom method in the last frame of the movie
clip, however, this is not completely accurate and it makes it
impossible to seamlessly loop sounds.
Now, the Flash player must be aware that the sound has
finished playing. I presume that sounds embedded in the IDE are
handled by the Sound class in some way. Is there any way at all
that I can expose an event when the embedded sound finishes
playing?
I'd really prefer to use another approach, and just attach
sound files from a Library or from external files, but I don't have
a choice in this particular case. This is the way the application
has to work.
I will probably have to give up on the precision I want in
order to complete this job on time, but I refuse to believe that
what I'm trying to do is impossible. I would appreciate any help
anyone can give me.

You'll have to update your OS on your Macbook.
Click on the black Apple logo at the top left of your Mac screen. Then click on Software Update.

I lost all my events in my calendar. Is there anyway to retrieve them?

On the computer go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if a backup is listed. If no backup then unless you backet up to iCloud then, as I said my first reply:
- If you used PhotoStream then try getting them (photos only) from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

They're not lost, they simply don't show because you settings ask it not to.
Go to Settings --> Mail, Contacts, Calendar --> Calendar --> Sync --> All events

Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...scroll down to the Calendars section and tap Sync, and set this to a longer time period.

• Suppress Ring/Sound Events

Is there a method to suppress sound events with any of the development SDK's.
My PALM allowed me to suppress SOUND events for anyone who was NOT in my contacts.
I can't seem to do that with my new iPhone
If one of the SDK's would allow trapping of sound events, then one could filter the caller id against a user setup list... Then it would be possible to either allow or disallow the sound event based on REGEXP filter of the user's list...

I've never tried it (I kind of appreciate peace and quiet when I'm not listening to iTunes), but you might like Xounds.

• No sound events in xfce4

I have installed xfce. My problem is that I can't enable sound events. There is an option in the settings to enable it but it has no effect at all. I have installed libcanberra has suggested. I do not use pulseaudio but plain alsa (and I would prefer not to use pulseaudio). This is not a permission or driver problem since applications are able to use the sound just fine. I do not know what to do from here. Has anyone an idea?

Have you figured out something about this problem? I seem to have the same problem here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=160059
I also use alsa.
