.mov clip loses quality

I imported a .mov clip into final cut, then I drag the .mov clip onto my timeline, but the clip loses quality when it's on the timeline.  I exported it using the h.264 format and it loses quality.  The loss of quality of the video is very noticeable.
Does someone have an answer for this?  And, what do I need to do for my video clip to maintain its original quality when I put it on the timeline and when I export it?  Please let me know.  Thanks

  • Scale to frame size: clip lose quality

    Hi
    I'm working with Premiere CS3.
    I captured a clip from a Sony HVR-Z1E over IEEE1394 in a HDV Project. Settings: HDV 1080i, 25.00 Frames/Second, HD Anamorphic 1080 (1,333), upper field first.
Afterwards I import the clip in a DV Project. Settings DV PAL, 25.00 Frames/Second,D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1, 422), upper field first.
In the timeline, I scale down the clip manually (under effectsettings/ move/scale)the clip to 53.3%. The clip lose quality. Pixels seems to be bigger. The same also happens if I check "scale to frame size".
Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Corinne

    Hi
Thanks for your reply. Yes that's right. But in CS2 the lose of quality was much smaller then in CS3. The clip was after scaling to 53.3% still useful. That can't be the problem.
I thought thath SD DV is upper field?

  • Loading a movie clip loses my script function

I have an art gallery that is in three parts. The Flash movie
used to load everything before opening, but the gallery has grown
too large. So now I've divided it up into three sections. The first
section loads the first set of pics with the movie. The second and
third sections load when you click on the relevant buttons. The
interface (root movie) has 2 movie clips per section - the
thumbnails (all three of which load with the movie) and the large
pics of the thumbnails. So when you click on a thumbnail the proper
large work shows in the other movie clip. This all worked fine
using this code in my thumbnails for the largeWorks sections:
    stop();
    large1_btn.onPress = function (){
    _root.largeWorks_mc.gotoAndStop(1);
    large2_btn.onPress = function (){
    _root.largeWorks_mc.gotoAndStop(2);
    etc...
This code is in the thumbnail movie script. Notice it calls
    _root.largeWorks_mc
Now when you click on See Large Works button a place holder
movie clip (target) called largeWorksE_mc is replaced with
    largeWorks_mc.
    The button uses the code:
    loadMovie("largeWorks_mc.swf",_root.largeWorksE_mc);
But now when I click on the thumbnails nothing happens. My
thumbnail movie clip is no longer communicating with the loaded
movie clip. What have I done wrong?

I had trouble following your explanation.
If code is disappearing, it is probably code in a MovieClip
that a loadMovie replaces with another external movie. When using
loadMovie, the MovieClip in it is destroyed and the timing is not
    something you can predict.

  • Can a video clip lose quality with ,multiple rerendering???

I have a question, can rerender a video file, say I rendered and found I forgot to add chapter markers to sequence, rendered it to a Quicktime DV clip, I deleted all render files after export. Now all I have is the DV clip that needs to have chapter markers added, When I open it in FCP 5, and add chapter markers and then export to a new updated Quicktime DV movie. Will I be sacrificing the quality of the this DV clip, if I now go in yet again, and add some Motion graphics, to it? Once again all render files are deleted. I guess what I am asking is if you open edit, several times using new render files each time you make changes with this compromise the quality of the final video?
As always thanks in advance for your reply to my Post,
    Sebastian

Well... every time you make a change to a clip or sequence that requires a re-render, the old files are chucked and FCP starts all over again with the render process. So, yes and no. A clip with no effects is a simple file transfer, if you will, while adding something that requires a render will make a new render clip that, in the timeline, replaces the original media.
Remember that FCP does non-destructive editing, your original clips reside unchanged on your drive(s.)

  • How many times can you "Export - Quicktime movie" the same ProRes 422 file until it starts to lose quality?

Lets say you are done with your project & you want an uncompressed copy of it as your master. If you keep importing it back into Final Cut Pro, & keep exporting (Quicktime movie), will it ever start to lose quality?

I've never seen a number given, but would think it is very high.
    Apple describes ProRes here:
    About Apple ProRes
    And in that document says:
"while remaining visually lossless through many generations of decoding and reencoding."
I don't think I've ever seen degradation caused by recompression or multiple compassion, but as a workflow if you output a master file, then re-import it to add graphics and export that, you would only be 1 generation down from the master file. If you wanted to make multiple versions, you can always go back to, and re-import,  the master file and make the changes, then export, so all you exports stay only 1 generation down from the master file.

  • Pictures lose quality and audio in a video clip starts to clip after render

I enjoy doing various random small projects with final cut studio, but there are a few problems I am still having in doing so. One is I record a local basketball league's games and make highlight videos out of them. Another is I like to convert dvds into files and make favorite quote montages or edit movies to have clean versions for the kids. I do not have professional equipment, yet. Final Cut was the first step I chose to take to upgrade. So I'm sure most of the stuff I use is not the greatest choice, but I'm just trying to get the best out of what I have. And when I have problems that I know are bad, I need to find out how to fix them.
    Problem with basketball highlights:
I am not sure which is the best format to convert the video to in Final Cut that would make it work the best. Also a problem importing pictures.
The camera I use to record is a Sony Handycam Exmor HDR-XR100. I am confused about importing in Final Cut so I usually import through imovie, which saves the files as .mov and then I go to the finder and put them in Final Cut. Clicking on more info shows me a 20 minute clip (of basketball in this case) is 14.29gb, quicktime movie, 1440 X 1080 dimensions, apple intermediate codec, integer (little endian), timecode, channel count: 2, total bit rate: 102, 385. When I record with the camera I usually turn off the button 'easy mode', which shows on the screen a better quality image going from HD to HDHQ and 5.1 surround sound. Sometimes the render times are ridiculously long for small files and the quality decreases or what not so I was just wondering if there is a good extension to use or format that would be better for use in final cut. Obviously some extensions don't work in final cut, but the most familiar I've used are .mov and .avi (though I don't use avi anymore because I've been told it's not the greatest idea)
Another recent problem I'm having is with pictures in these highlight videos. When I record basketball, I like to record and show everyone their stats along with the video at the end of each game. So I create an excel document with all the teams and numbers and then save it as a .pdf file or picture to load into final cut and add to the video at the end of each game highlights. A similar thing happens though, when I load it in the browser from there the quality is great in the viewer. As soon as I load it in the timeline, the quality drops drastically and I can't even read the numbers in the viewer or canvas. When I took a final cut training class I remember hearing something about a button that makes final cut work faster by reducing the quality of the media it's displaying, but doesn't affect the output. I was wondering if maybe there is a simple button that I have set wrong and maybe that is the reason this is happening, or maybe I just am making it a bad choice of extension again I don't know.
Problem with video files not recorded by me:
Other times I don't record from my own camera say if I want to make a movie montage of all my favorite movie lines/quotes. I would like to edit movies as well to make them clean for my kids to watch. In any case, I convert the dvd to a file on my computer, usually multiple extensions and just use the one that works and also has the best quality, and then load it to final cut. (Is there a program in Final Cut Studio that would be better for this? Right now I use iSkysoft Media Converter to convert these files). As soon as I load it to the timeline and render it, the audio skips like a hiccup throughout the movie. This is when I notice the skipping is only really audible in the audio when music starts to play. I thought that was kind of weird. I can't pick it up as much when there is just dialogue, but when a song comes on or a scene begins with music it makes the entire audio sound bad.
So maybe the problem isn't what extension the file is and I need to look at more details such as dimensions I'm guessing. If you have any examples I would appreciate it. I am sorry I am so difficult haha.
Thanks again for all you're input and help. What goes around comes around and I really try to do the best I can in everything I undertake. I really appreciate it.

I called it "making a montage of my favorite movie clips." It is what it is. Just how I said it. I do stand up impressions part time and sometimes, believe it or not i get recorded, or I record myself and "make a montage of all my favorite movie clips" or scenes from a movie or anything for that matter. So as illegal as that is I apologize that you want to monitor that stuff.
So lets step out of our assumptive sheriff shoes and stop hazardly guessing at anything that you would disprove of. Everyone else has been very helpful. Besides, all these questions centralize around a basketball highlight video I am making for a coach, that I myself recorded and own the copyright to, to be specific and hopefully clarify your hunch.
As a video editor you also often receive footage with numerous formats depending on who you're working with. Not everything is an illegal transaction that you assume it to be. Thanks

  • Exporting SWF diminishes quality of movie clip

Im working on a Dragonball Z MMO. things are goin great so far utilizing Flash PHP and MySQL. but thats not the issue right now.
Im running tests of the battle system. i have the enemy set up as Mr. Popo (character from the series) The quality of the sprite appears great and in good color.
however, when i compile everything into the final .swf, the movie clip appears diminished, discolored, and just really crappy looking.
    good pre-compiled version
crappy looking .swf running version >:(
it only happens to this movie clip in particular, any insite would be grossly appricated.

Check your export settings go to FIle -> publish settings. Check the slider for image compression/image quality. Should be at 80% by default. Also right click on that image (for that character) in the library and click properties. There should be 2 radio buttons where you can set the quality of the image. If you enter a value and press test, it will show you a preview in that window of what the image looks like at that quality. Let me know if this fixes ur problem.

  • Movie clip transfer times & process & format quality

How long should it take for a movie clip to move from one project to another? I was moving a 18 sec clip that is 120mb and it says it will take 28 minutes, this seems excessive.
Also if I have 5 separate videos already imported into separate projects what is the best way for me to grab partial clips from each one and combine into a new project?
Additionally when I used a DV-NTSC format clip as the source and the new one is MPEG4 format automatically it seems that the quality drops substantially, is this to be expected? What could I do to have this retain the video quality.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi MahiMahi - it depends how long the original source clip is, because when you transfer a clip, it is not just the trimmed, edited clip from your Timeline that is moved but its entire source clip. So if that source clip is much longer than the trimmed version, it could indeed take a long time to transfer.
Did you want the 'new one' to be MPEG4, which is a compressed format? Or did you want it to retain the full DV quality? When you set up a new project you get the chance in the opening window to establish the import format.

  • Help please! quality problems converting HDMI movie clips into iMovie mp4

I am importing HDMI movie clips from a canon powershot SX50HS camera into iMovie and building them into a single MP4 intended for YouTube.
The movie clips appear clear as a bell individually in iPhoto whatever size I enlarge them to on the screen but are horrendously blurred in the MP4 movie- especially text.
Help!!!! What am I doing wrong????

    Hi chrisluna123,
If you are not already doing so, you may want to try importing directly into iMovie from the camera. You may also want to test the "Analyze for stabilization after import” function on a shorter clip to see if that helps. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Whatever is Created in LiveType....Loses Quality in FCE ......?

I've noticed no matter what I create in LiveType after it is rendered in FCE as a Quicktime movie (LivetType clips used as intros) it loses Picture quality. It becomes very grainy, why???? How do I rectify this problem?

Ok. This is the thing that is throwing me off. I pplaced the livetype movie onto a movie and it improved ever-so-slightly. I understand that in livetype it is created in the highest quality and the moment you place something like that onto a dvd it loses quality. Granted I don;t have a blue ray burbner so I can keep the quality but I place some of my videos on Vimeo.com that accepts HD videos and when I placed it on there site it still looks the same. It only looks good in the LiveType editor or when i just render it as a movie. Final Cut kills the quality. So much for such creating HD videos when I can't do a simple intro in HD its more like SD.

  • How do I put short Iphone movie clips into one long movie?

What's the best method to take short little movie clips from my Iphone and splice them together into one long movie without using video quality?
I have Imovie so if I use it, will I lose video quality?  I've been told that Imovie 08' only imports every other line of resolution when I capture Digital Video.  Does it do the same for Iphone videos?
I tried to use Final Cut Express already but when I exported the video and then viewed it in Itunes it looked quite a bit worse than the originals.
    Thanks for any help.

I have had some luck doing the following: Export each clip from imovie as a quicktime clip. Open iDVD and create a new project. Import a few stills into iDVD and then click on the button that gets created to get into the screen where the individual slides appear. Drag each quicktime into that screen and arrange in the order you want. You can then delete the stills. The button that appeared when you dropped in the stills will launch a complete show.

  • How do I backup movies/clips to use in future projects?

After burning my first DVD & deleting the iMovie file, I was sad to discover that I could not just pop the DVD into my drive & access the material to use in future projects. (Is there a way to do do this that I don't know about?)
I'm guessing I need to burn the archived iMovie file onto multiple regular CDs (I have not burned anything that spans several CDs before). This is confusing me because the zipped file is hardly smaller than the original (Is there a better zip program than the one that comes with this system?) I threw away the wrapper for my blank CDs so I don't know how much they hold but I think it is something ridiculously small like 670MB and the iMovie file is 7GB. Is this the only way to save my movie/clips so that I can bring clips into a future movie?

welcome Novice to the  board ....
    hmm, multidimensional question ...
DVD is end-of-the-road, not meant for further processing; there are tools, allowing to import DVD to iM, but that is a time-consuming and lossy (=losing pic quality) process, due to the deliver-format nature of DVDs.... search forum for "DVD import"
iM is by concept not meant to handle a clip in many projects (that can easily been accomplished with pro tools as FC(E), which offer "bins" for imports, offering the content to many sequences/projects).
there are workarounds, dragging clips from the internal files of an iM project to another... but, as said: you "fumble" the concept: import tape, edit, burn - done.
a video contains ~13GB of data per hour... and, video is allready highly compressed, no zipper can reduce that dramatically... and, you risk damage of files... yepp, a cd-r fits ~700MB = 3.5min of video......
    recommended workflow:
    * don't store iM projects on -r media (cd/dvd), but firewire connected harddrives..
    * keep the tapes; import clips from tape into project; you can export single clips out of iM/import into another project, I wouldn't do that with "lots" of clips, importing the tape is... more convenient..

    Hello guys
I have a project in my Final Cut just about done.  I want to add my slideshow as part ofthe project and burn it to DVD.  Inmy slideshow, there are some stills from the movie clips and some downloadedfrom the internet but they all look blur when playback and even worse if Iapply Ken Burn to it.   Pleasesome one can tell my how to do it right or it can’t be done because thedownload quality and stills from the clip are not suitable or slideshow.  Thank you

    Thank you Ross.
The entire DVD containing Quick Time movies (Final CutExpress project) and slideshow was done in iPhoto.  The Final Cut project was rendered prior to export to QT,  the slideshow was sent to iDVD withoutrendering. The slideshow with most of the pictures from my still camera incombination with stills from movie clips and some downloaded from the Internet. After burning, the movie playback is perfect but the slideshow is not.  The slideshow containing 3 differentkinds of pictures; those from my still camera looks OK; the stills from themovie clips and from the Internet are not.  I don’t have much knowledge in this game, but I think NTSCwith frame size 720x480, and the downloaded picture Item Property shows most ofthem are between 400 to 500 x 300 to 600, may be both of them are not suitablefor TV screen while the stills from my still camera looks OK because they are2048x1536.  Please enlightenme.  Once again, thank you so much,I really appreciate the time you offered.

  • Movie Clip in swf won't show animation in adobe premiere pro cs4

Hi, I am new to this forum and as well as a beginner user of adobe premiere pro cs4. I am recently making a animation using Adobe Flash CS5, I've been using movie clips symbol to create all the movement of the character, background and stuff. Unfortunately, swf movies exported from Adobe Flash CS5 do not show any animation at all in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I have to use movie clips symbol instead of graphic symbol because filters can be added to a movie clip symbol but not graphic symbol. Is there any way to help making the movie clip symbol to be shown in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4? Your help is much appreciated.

Check Flash help in the "video" section, specifically "moving content between" PR and FL. (I was looking at CS4, but it must be there in CS5 help as well.)
Your movie is to be watched on a TV?  I would do this in After Effects. because you'll lose most of the flash functionality once you go to video anyway,
