MOVED: Can't install Linux due to JMicron

This topic has been moved to Linux/Unix.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=100282.0

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
The MS articles in question:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
Hope this helps!

  • Can I install Linux for Windows on my Apple Mac and afterwards use old windows programs as PageMaker on my new Mac. If yes where can I find Linus windows for Mac

Can I install Linux for Windows at my new Mac and afterwards use old Windows programs as Photo Shop and PageMaker on my Mac? If yes where at the Internet can I find Linux for Mac and Windows?

What is your definition of a "Linux for Windows" ?
There is Linux like Ubuntu which can be installed on a Mac
    See the UbuntuForuns here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTeam
And there is Microsoft Windows which can be installed and used on a Mac with Apples BootCamp http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ or through Virtualization apps like Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox.
Windows Programs don't run in a Linux only in Windows.

  • Can I install Linux and then use the original Windows 8 OEM product key for a virtual machine on the same computer?

I have ordered a new laptop and expect to receive it in 2-3 weeks.  The laptop comes with an OEM version of Windows 8 installed.  I wish
to install Linux as the host operating system and create a virtual machine running Windows 8.  Can I legally use the product key from the OEM installation to activate a virtual machine that will only be used on the laptop that had the original OEM installation?
If so, what is the procedure to activate the copy installed on the virtual machine?
This question has been addressed for Windows 7, but my searches did not reveal this question posed for Windows 8.

Technically, no.  The OEM is licensed only for the physical hardware on the system.  It isn't licensed for virtual hardware.
You may find you're unable to activate your OEM license in the VM.  A lot of OEM Windows look for specific hardware to verify they're being installed on the correct hardware.
    Although here: http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/Pages/support-faq.aspx#fbid=Zh0SiBdas5I
    Q. Can I install OEM on a virtual machine (VMware)?
    A. You may install OEM in a virtual environment as long as you have a separate license for each instance of the software. It is fine to use the OEM version as long as it is properly licensed. To be clear, a separate version of software must be installed
for both the “standard” and “virtual” installations.
You still may not be able to activate if there is a hardware block.
The best place to ask this is to Microsoft licensing, any response you get here, including mine, won't hold up since it's not an official answer.

  • Can I install Linux on an external drive?

I'm kinda curious about something. If I boot up off an external firewire drive at boot time and I have previously partitioned it into 2 partitions (techtool or iPartition) is it possible to install a Intel Linux distro on the 2nd partitition?
When I go to boot from that external drive will the Linux installed boot loader allow me to select OSX or Linux to actually boot from?
Even better can I just install Linux on this external drive in the only partition?
I'm only looking to experiment with a Linux distro and I don't want to use Parallels anymore so I'm wondering if I can use an external drive to do so.
    TIA,
    Peter

Here is an indirect answer. I know you can using Paralles, not sure about the other way though.

  • How can i install Linux (Ubuntu or Kubuntu) and Windows at the same HDD?

    Hi everyone
I have Toshiba L20-148 and I have the Toshiba Product Recovery DVD and I have the Ubuntu DVD
I'm only able to install Linux or the Windows XP Pro that i have with the recovery DVD
and the only way i know to install them both together is by installing linux then windows... but whenever i try to install windows usin' the data recovery it just formats the whole HDD and install windows only...
    any help?

    Hi
The boot manger can be set manually in the Windows system properties.
Please go to the control panel and select system
    Then select the Advanced tab
In the advanced tab please select the option Settings in the Startup and recovery area.
A new window should open and you should use edit button in the system startup area.
You should see something like that:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
To add a further booting option you should change it for example to:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Linux="linux kubuntu" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Maybe something nasty is on the pc preventing installation. Pop ms essentials on for a while. Do a full scan and run malware, spybot etc.
I had exactly this issue and in the end wiped everything and reinstalled windows.
    Tedious. But it solved it.

  • Can't install iTunes due to Quicktime failing to install

I'm on Vista (sad face) and over the past couple months iTunes has worked on and off...working and then I get an error saying "iTunes has stopped working" and then I have to mess with everything uninstalling/installing to get it working again.
However last week, when it happened I uninstalled iTunes and then attempted to uninstall Quicktime but it would not remove Quicktime off the list even after restarts. Then I ran the newest iTunes + Quicktime installer and it just goes until it gives me and error saying "The installer encountered errors before the requested operation for Quicktime could be compleated" and takes me to the complete box saying try again later. So the problem is with Quicktime because it won't uninstall/install and thus I can not install iTunes.
I have tried using the stand-alone Quicktime installer and have gotten the same error. I have also tried Apple Software Updater and no dice. I am getting very frustrated nothing seems to work and I need to update my iPod! Please help!
    Thanks!

+I finally got QuickTime uninstalled (it wouldn't give me errors uninstalling, it just wouldn't uninstall) via Windows CleanUp Utility.+
After you used CleanUp, did you manually remove any leftover QuickTime program files?
If not, let's run through a CleanUp routine again.
Run CleanUp and remove the QuickTime entry.
    1. On the Start menu, click Computer.
    2. In Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer.
Next, we'll try to get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
Go into "Uninstall a program" in your Control Panel (assuming here that you don't have Classic View selected) and select itunes. click "Repair" up at the top of the control panel screen.
If the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. Does it launch properly now?

    That's wrong.
You need to do this instead:
    # pacman-key --populate archlinux

  • Can't install ML due to verification error

I am not able to install Mountain Lion 10.8.1 on my MacBook Pro 3,1 running SL 10.6.8. I get the following error:
Strangely, the downloaded file clocks in at around 70MB, not the >4GB listed in the App Store description.
I can successfully download and install other applications on the same computer using the same App Store account.

Believe the message. Contact http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact.html?form=account, they're responsible for making this abysmal delivery system work.

  • I have downloaded the updates on my macbook air but when i restart my computer it says can not install updates due to an unexpected error????

i have downloaded the updates for my macbook air and when i restart the computer it says that they can not be installed because and error occured i have tried 3 times

A common hangup for updates is corrupted file permissions.
Using Disk Utility, perform a Repair Disk Permissions on your main drive, then re-attempt the update.

  • Can't install updates due to how admin/silent install was built

We finally dabbled with doing a silent/admin install for our Photoshop CS6 rollout.  We thought everything worked great until we tried to do the check for updates from the menu, and it gave us a message saying that we couldn't.
I think what happened was when we built the admin/silent install, there was an option about updates.  What we wanted to avoid was having the users (who don't have permissions to install the updates) getting prompted that an update was available.  What I think we did was somehow made it so updates can't be downloaded/installed at all.
Is there a way to change the update behavior on each machine?  Or do we have to uninstall Photoshop, then build a new silent installer package with a different option and reinstall it?  I really hope there's a way to just change the setting somehow via the registry or a file.

Have you tried using the Creative Cloud Packager to edit your previous package? I've never tried it myself to see if it will give yoiu access to make changes.
If that option isn't available I believe there is a '.dat' file in the '/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AAMUpdaterInventory/1.0/' folder on Macs that I can delete to re-enable software updates (may be CC only though). I imagine there is a similar file on a PC that could be deleted or temporarily relocated or renamed to achieve the same result.

  • What am I doing wrong? Can't install iTunes due to old iPod software

Hi - iTunes will not install - error message says it can't upgrade old iPod software and it should be uninstalled. I had an old 2ndGen iPod and I have removed everything to do with that (Musicmatch, quicktime, iPod manager (although teh latter proved difficult as it wouldn't delete from Program Files - got rid of it and then when I reinstalled everything in order to uninstall again to see if that would fix, it now wont delete at all) etc.) and have been through all the windows installer clean-ups and everything else on the support page.
Has anyone else encountered this - would really appreciate help as doing my head in! Its so I can use new Nano.
    Thx.
