Movie/Video formats on Still digital cameras

I've purchased a no-name digital picture frame for friends for the holidays. While I've got sample
pictures they've taken with their digital camera to play fine on the frame, I'm primarily interested in editing some of their home-videos with Final Cut Pro and getting them to play on the digital frame.
They recorded their movies on a mini-dv camera and I've digitized the files into FCP fine.
The instructions with the frame say it will play video formats MPEG 1,2 and 4, but doesn't give any specifics beyond that on size, frame rate or other conditions of those three formats which will make movie videos compatible for the frame. As it's a no-name frame, there is no customer service information to whom I can address the question.
I fully realize that I may need some format very specific to this frame, and it may be a trial and error game for me, but I'm wondering if any readers of this forum are also familiar with the Movie Mpeg 1,2,4 files recorded by most still digital cameras, and can provide any additional info on how I might need to create the MPEG video so it will be compatible with the frame. I'm sure I can use FCP export, Compressor or Quicktime export once I know the right specifics.
I surmise that all these digital frames that promote the fact that they play video are talking about the movies (video) that many of these still digital cameras can create and playback internally. That's the video format I'm trying to replicate and find out more about. Any additional information would be helpful for me.
Thanks.

If you can make a movie in the MPEG-4 format it should be useable regardless of the frame rate or size. The optimal size usually is 640 x 480. I've found in my digital frame I need to put the items in a folder on the memory card instead of the root directory of the card. The frame can see the folder(s) and play from there. I guess it's because the card is formated FAT 16 and can't take many items in the root directory. The only issue is size of the movie file. The smaller you can make it the better it will probably play.
My Canon camera creates 640 x 480 H.264 files at 29.7 fps which is the .mp4 format.
Just be sure to have vanilla file names as the cards are PC based and choke on non standard characeter, i.e. 0-9 and a-z. No spaces in the file name, underscores or dashes only.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphone recognised as "still digital camera" ?

I have just registered my i phone and am cuurently operating on a temp number as my original is being activated...shouldn't be long now.....my problem is that when I now plug in the usb to update music etc again the computer seems to recognise the phone as "still digital camera", Itunes doesn't open and the computer shuts down as the result of a "serious error" where the truncated folder on restart mentions some kind of "apple lockdown" - if any of this looks sadly familiar or rings a bell then PLEASE HELP me....be gentle though as u have probably guessed i'm not a particularly techy person.....any help greatly appreciated .....the phone is fine at the moment but I'm a tad concerned that when I want to update music / photos etc in the near future ...this is going to happen again and again....can't be good eh ??? cheers, Malcolm

Just to add to Nathan's post... and as an FYI...
If you are using windows then it is correct behaviour to recognize the iPhone as a digital still camera AS WELL. So if you have photo management software loaded (photoshop premiere / corel etc), these softwares will recognize the camera portion of your phone and allow you to use 3rd party software to pull/manage the pictures on it. You should also see the iphone in My Computer which will allow you to use Windows to pull pics from it that way.

  • Blue screen at "still digital camera" on first install/sync to XP

    Hi bvearley,
Does your PC have software for a Logitech QuickCam/Webcam, Lexmark scanners, or a built-in media card reader?
If it does try uninstalling the software from Control Panel, then testing again, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502
If the issue is no longer present, download updated driver software from the accessory manufacturer.

  • Vfw for still digital cameras?

    hi;
can a still camera be hooked and detected by JMF?
i tried every search for VFW and digital cameras but i could not find out if i can capture video from a stills camera.
    thanks.

at last i get an answer in this forum.People aren't ignoring you... it's just not a very active area, and people haven't necessarily used digital cameras as webcams.
i actually was wondering if i could capture the same data that is delivered to a >still camera LCD screen. If you mean the actual live video viewscreen even before you take a photograph... then I seriously doubt it. That's not what the camera was designed to do.
You're asking a digital stills camera to behave like a digital camcorder / webcam.
When you connect your camera up to your PC, using a USB cable... does it appear as a virtual disk drive / USB mass storage device ?
If so, then you may be able to just read the JPEGs as if they were stored on a disk drive. ( only after the camera user takes the pictures )
That is the limit of my knowledge in this area...

    Owen

  • Video In adapter for digital camera

I need an adapter that will allow me to establish a video connection from a Nikon D90 digital camera to my iMac in order to show on the computer screen, in my classroom, a live image of whatever appears on the monitor on the back of the camera (menus, images, camera settings etc). Anybody knows what I need and where I could find it?

    Hello,
This should do what you're after. Whether the menu/settings are displayed are down to the camera's output however.

  • Itunes rented movie "video format not supported" by ipad?

I just rented 3 movies in the iTunes Store.  They all downloaded to iTunes successfully.  They are all SD, not HD.  When I try to move them to the iPad and sync, I get a message saying that the movies cannot be played on this iPad because the video format is not supported.
I have rented movies before and played them successfully.  What do I do now?
iPad is about 6 months old, 32 GB Wi-Fi, running iOS 6.1.3.

I'm not sure why they don't play ...
But I wonder why you wouldn't simply update your iPad to iOS 7.0.4 and see if that solves the issue.

  • Importing videos shot with a digital camera (consumer still camera)

    Hi all,
I am having trouble with having to render any part that's changed even by a frame. I've got a Fuji F30 digital still camera that I used to take some 320x240 videos that I wanna just splice together. I've tried all kinds of sequence profile changes to the Audio/Video Settings (Photo JPEG compression, Movie A, None, H.264, and all kinds of audio settings) and testing each one by converting the file in FCP's Media Browser to match. Always the red "unrendered" bar.
Am I missing something? Or if it came from a digital still camera, am I just "stuck"?

Ok, I answered my own question thru trial and error. The answer, for anyone stuck like I was, is that once you have a sequence open, the A/V settings of that sequence are not changed by "Audio/Video Setup." You have to right-click on the Sequence in the browser and change the "Settings...", or click on the Sequence and choose "Sequence > Settings..." from the menu.
Silly newb. Do I get points for answering my own question?

  • How do I separate short movie clips loaded from my digital camera to iPhoto 11 at the same time pics are downloaded and how do I get those video clips to a dvd that will play on a dvd player

When loading pics to iphoto 11 from my camera, occassionaly it will include some video clips with the description of Movxxxx. I wonder if someone could direct me to some straight forward instructions as to how to transfer these video (movie) clips, which now exist in iphoto, to a dvd that will play on a dvd player as one might  expect to see a video play, including the audio that was captured at the time of filming.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer this novice.

You need to open iMovie and it will have a event library called iPhoto Videos, click on that and the videos will load in the window next to it, then you make a new project in iMovie.  Then open iDVD and make a new project then import the movies to the program then burn to a DVD..

  • Does media hub support mov video format?

Most of my video files are stored as .mov format. I just found out that none of these video files show up the media browser. I carefully checked the datasheet and user manual. On data sheet, it's shown as supported. On user manual, it's not in the list of supported video file format.
Anyone has same experience. How you solved it? Thanks a bunch.

YES, the media hub does support MOV Format. But I would like to clarify your concern when you said that "you can't see the files on the media hub". Do you mean that you can't see the files on the media browser even after copying the file to it? Or you just can't play the MOV files on the media browser even though you can see it? If it's the latter, then it might just be the plugin installed on your internet browser. Just update the plugins on your browser and you should be fine.

  • Why can't I import sound with video into iMovie from digital camera?

This is disturbing. I have a digital video camera that took great video + sound. I import into iMovie (using my DV cable that came with the camera) and get video but no sound.
Now, in the past the sound came in, but no longer. Any and all advise is requested. I have to make number videos of lectures starting Wednesday evening and have to be able to provide video with audio.
    Thanks.

Try importing video shot with the camera's internal
microphone. If that doesn't work either, the mic is
    not the problem.
I have no problem importing sound with video when using the internal video camera mic. No problem (other than sound quality issues with the speaker being 40 feet away from the camera's internal mic!
But I can play back the video made with the external mic in the camera and the sound is stunningly clear, crisp and loud. It's just a matter of getting it out of the camera into my Mac. I don't think it's the microphone; it must be the computer.
I just find it sad to believe that Apple's software is so limited--even in Final Cut Express HD.
