Moving files within a session - am I missing something?!

I posted about this last week but thought I'd ask pretty much the same question a different way! (And thanks to the guys who answered before.)
OK, I make radio documentaries. Yesterday, I finished a 60 minute piece that was a continuous flow of sound bites, sound effects, music ... typical BBC radio 4 style stuff. When assembling, I build in four or five session files of ten to fifteen minutes each (Ideally I'd prefer to build in a single file but it causes too many problems). As a producer, the bigger the file, the better I can sense the overall pace of my work. Which is important.
Yesterday, I was frantically polishing and decided, for example, that I wanted to slightly adjust a file in the middle of the session by a small amount, necessitating moving everything either to the left or right (depending which direction I move the file). As I discovered here last time, it is not possible to mark all the files from a certain point automatically, you have to do it file by file with the cursor. This works, but the truth is that you can easily miss a file. And when you are under time pressure, the risk increases. Once you have moved a block, the only way to check you did it properly s to listen to the whole file, which of course, I do, but it adds to the time.
But Audition is used by radio people. Any documentary maker needs to be able to fine tune in the way I described and I can't believe that the programme designers didn't think of this. So logically, there must be other ways to work around the problem. But what are they?
I have to say that Audition meets all my needs as a producer, except for this. But when it comes to polishing and fine tuning, I'm beginning to find it frustrating. So, documentary makers, do you recognise what I'm saying and how do you cope?

I've yet to miss a file by the 'swipe' method using the move/copy clip tool, but for an entire session minus one file, I'd do it slightly differently. I either move just the file I want to (or group of files - groups are very useful in this context) and add time into the session, or select all of the files and remove just the one I want to leave alone. That way's much safer, because if you select the whole session (Ctrl+A) as a discrete action, you don't have the worry of missing anything - and what you actually want to do becomes a positive move, not a negative one, if you see what I mean.
Mostly though, you explore different methods, and find the one that best suits you - as mentioned, there are several options...

  • Help with missing files within lightroom

I need help locating the missing files within lightroom. When I click on the question mark to locate the files, it opens up a window and I click locate, and then the files are no longer there. This happens even on files that I have not moved out of lightroom. How can I make all of my files appear as they used to? Thanks so much!

You have to find the photos on your hard disk, somewhere. At this point, Lightroom can't help you because it doesn't know where the photos are. If they haven't been renamed, you can have your operating system search all of your hard disk(s) for a specific photo name. Then, you can reconnect entire folders (or folder hierarchies) via

  • Just moved to Mac from Windows, so far biggest headache is the way folders are treated. I manage several very large websites and involve a lot of files within folders and I need the folders to show the date the last file inside it was changed?

In my FTP client I can click to sort by date modified which is fine if you are in a folder and then it shows the file dates correctly - but any folders within the root folder don't they seem to display randomly all together at the bottom of the list and it is a nightmare trying to find what folders have files in them that have been changed.
Is there any way to get the folder to register the last date of a file within it that was modified?

I dont know the answer yet, but i have noted what appears to be a bug in 10.9 in how it handles folder dates.  Right now i am seeing folder modified dates changing randomly ot "today" - whatever date the parent folder was opened.
In the past my folders "modified" date was always the same as the last modified date of the items within.  But this only moved down ONE level - if a subfolder's entries were updated the "gradfather" folder did not update.
But now severa people are reporting random, incorrect folder dates. I hoep this will be corrected soon, but who knows?

I am using a late 2008 macbook and have recently purchased a WD passport ultra 1TB drive to use as storage.  I have successfully formatted the drive, and moved files from macbook onto it, however now I cannot locate the drive within FINDER, even though it is showing within disc utility.  Please HELP!!!!

Open a Finder window, and your external drive should show up in the sidebar, under "Devices".
A different way is to go to Finder menu (in the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External disks". If your external drive is detected by OS X, it will show up at the top right corner of Desktop, so double-click it to access to the content.

  • I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive.  Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  Can someone please help?

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick?

Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick? I have to Relaunch the Finder to get it working again.
    Background / other symptoms:
The Flash drive in question has been formatted HFS.
I get no error messages, including on the Console, and no sound indicators.
I can copy files, using the Finder, from a hard-drive to the usb flash drive with no problem.
Finder copying on this stick works just fine on my other Mac.
I can move files within another (FAT32-formatted) USB flash drive.
The quirky USB HFS Flash drive works fine on my other Mac.
Outside of the Finder, I can use mv just fine to move the files on the HFS flash drive.
If the HFS-formatted Flash drive were faulty, I would at least expect some sort of error in the Console app, but perhaps not from the Finder.

  • Folders are in the cloud, but some files within folders are missing

    Hi there
I have just switched from using dropbox to Creative Cloud to store files. When I upload a bunch of stuff, the folders load up, but the files within them are sometimes not loading. They are visible on the machine where I originally put them on, but not visible on my other machine or on the website. It says all files are synced?
    Richard

    Hi All,
The exact same thing is happening to me. The drop down only shows 5 of my bookmark folders. Unless I hit "Choose" then they all show but I don't want to take the extra steps. I have 9 different folders and I want to be able to just bookmark a website and drop it into that folder. I end up forgetting which folders I have b/c I only see 5 of the 9. Yes I can see them all when I hit choose but that defeats the purpose of having the bookmark function be a quick & simple one. If I have to "Organize" the folders every single time I favorite a site then its pointless to even show 5 of the folders you might as well not show any. Furthermore I can't even choose the 5 folders I want to show (i.e. the ones I use the most). I would be happy if I could opt to have my top 5 folders in the drop down menu & then the ones I don't use as much be under choose. But there is no option (that I can find) that lets you do that. I've even deleted, renamed, repositioned the folders and nothing is working.
Btw this only happens when I 1st bookmark a new page. Under Bookmarks I can see all of my folders & links (no problem). This only happens when I am 1st bookmarking a link & want to drop it into a folder I've created.
Please let me know if there is a way to fix this or is this a system issues.
    Thank you,
    Melina

So, I followed all the directions that I found on Apple's site about moving my files from my old PC to MAC. When I go to my MAC so I can pull over the files that I have on my iPod, I must be missing something because its not doing what it should be. I should be able to find on the iPod where are the files I put on it are stored but I'm not...help!

  • I moved files off my computer to an external hard drive now time machine won't back up like it used to.  It says there is not enough room.

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997)  I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive.  It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files.  Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted.  That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup.  You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue?  It should equal out.   And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup.  None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged.  How can I fix this?  The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change.  Help!!

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • Trouble Moving Files in Dreamweaver (CS3)

    Hi,
Having a real problem maneuvering some files around.
At the moment I have my index.html file which links to a folder called 2009website, which contains 4 folders each with a mini site in.
So for instance the index file is pointing to 2009website/design/print.html
    and also
    2009website/business/clientportfolio.html
    etc, etc.
What I want to do is take those 4 mini sites outside of the 2009website folder so that my index file points to:
    design/print.html
    and
    business/clientportfolio.html
So I've moved the folders in my Files Panel and clicked "Update links" in the dialog box which seemed to work nicely. Only problem is all the images and css links within the HTML are still looking in the 2009website folder, i.e.
2009website/design/css/design.css (and there's nothing in that folder anymore)
Is there anyway I can remove the 4 folders and have the internal links update so they drop the 2009website/ and just look for the relevant folder and file?
I know it's my own fault for putting everything inside the 2009website folder when there was no real need to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say you updated the links and everything seems to be ok - do you see any broken links within DW design view itself?
If the files are pointing to that particular folder for the images and the css, but there is Nothing in the folders, then there is a major issue I think.
This means that the updating of the links didn't work as you expected - if the files are not in the relevant folders, but the images and css are pointing to them,  then you should be seeing broken links...
    What you could try:
Backup what you have now - so it doesn't get any messier  :-)    (hopefully you have a backup copy of the original before you starting moving files !)
If you are sure that the files are all within the root of the site and not within that 2009 folder, then maybe do a find and replace and remove the beginning of the url, so that it points to where you moved the files to.  Try it on one page and see if it makes a difference.
You could also try and move around the images folder and the css folder and see if you get a pop up with DW asking if you want to update the links and see what happens.
Another idea  - do you have an images folder defined in the site definition?
Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do.

  • Keeping metadata when moving files?

I have LR 2.6. I have a laptop which doesn't have enough disk space for all of my photos, which go back to 2000 (around 22,000). I have three external drives, one is the main one and the other two are backups at this point (smaller space). I need to get another.
I had been importing the photos from the card to my laptop. In the past I've been able to keep a year on the laptop, but with my current camera I don't have enough room, just enough for a couple of months. What I had been doing is copying the older ones to the external drive outside of LR, and deleting them from the laptop, not realizing that I was losing my keywords, titles and I'm not sure what else. I didn't have the settings to create xmp files until recently. The last time I moved files I did it within LR, but it only moved the RAW files, not the xmp.
I had also been keeping all the data in one catalog. I went back to an older one that had a lot of what I'd lost and tried to update that, but there are still around 1,300 files without keywords. And now I have metadata conflicts (not sure if that's from the xmp settings or not).
1-What's the best way to deal with this so that I don't lose my info?
2-Is there any way to easily tell what the conflict is, or at least be able to tell in general where the "best" metadata is?
3-Is there any way to merge metadata from a selection of files to another catalog?
4-And if not answered in one of the above, what's the best way to fix this mess?
    Thanks in advance.

The last time I moved files I did it within LR, but it only moved the RAW files, not the xmp.
This can't possibly be correct . If the .xmp file exists, and you move the photo within LR, the xmp moves with it.

I think the only way you can have a metadata conflict is a conflict between the catalog's metadata and the xmp metadata.

There is no best way to fix this mess. Any way to fix it is probably going to involve a lot of tedious work on your part to straighten things out.
You can merge the metadata from the older catalog into the newer catalog. In the older catalog, select the desired photos and then File->Export as Catalog. Then, in the newer catalog, select File->Import from Catalog. This will cause LR to replace the metadata in the new catalog with the metadata in the older catalog. An alternative when you Import from Catalog is to tell LR to create virtual copies, so you have both sets of metadata in a single LR catalog, which you can then view and decide which one you want to keep.
    Good luck

  • Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
    1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
    2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
    3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
    4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name.  I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?
    Scott Martin

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!
