Moving I-Tunes to another hard drive

Hello everyone,
Recently my Windows OS crashed and now is unable to boot. I can access the crashed drive when connected as a secondary drive so I still have access to the data. Since then I have installed a new hard drive, reloaded Windows OS and installed latest version of I-Tunes.
My question is how do I get all of my old I-Tune songs over to my new hard drive? What is the best way of doing this?
Many thanks

  • Moving iTunes library to another hard drive

I followed the directions on the Apple website
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
to move my iTunes library to another hard drive. the instructions say to delete the original iTunes folder ...
now the library has been moved (the files are in the folder on the new hard drive) but iTunes has completely lost its catalog of my music (the screen is empty when I select library in iTunes) - what happened and how can I get the catalog back without importing everything?

    You missed 'Point 14':
After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes 4 Music Library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder.
If you deleted the 'iTunes Library.itl' file from that folder, then you deleted the iTunes database file that keeps track of all your song references, Playlists and some attributes. See:What are the iTunes Library files?
Can you recover this file from the ExHD? Or maybe the Recycle Bin? Place it back into the 'iTunes' folder under the 'My Music' folder.
If not, you'll have to 'Rebuild' your Library from the ExHD's music files. It's a simple 'File=>Add Folder' from within iTunes, but you will lose your Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes.

  • Moving root filesystem to another hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've been using Arch Linux for a few months now and it is by far my favorite Linux distribution.
I currently have Arch on an old Pentium III, with a whopping 20 GB IDE hard drive.
I'm building a new computer, and want to use a larger 160 GB SATA hard drive, and I was wondering what is the best way that I can just transfer my entire root filesystem so I don't have to bother copying all the scripts, programs, etc.
Can I just tarball my root directory, partition my new hard drive, and use some other LiveCD to copy the root partition? I know this shouldn't be that difficult, because everything in the root partition is in /, unlike Windows, which has association problems with the registry.
    Thanks!

I'd never want to lead anyone down the garden path without at least trying this myself so for the last hour or so I've done just as described above on an old computer I have that I play around with and a spare small 8 gb hard drive.  I first tried copying the files over with thunar but that didn't work too well (froze up) probably due to trying to copy /sys and /proc--duh.
I tried again using midnight commander (to install do #pacman -S mc) and it worked perfectly.  The /dev directory copied over just fine but don't try copying /proc and /sys.  Just make empty directories so the system can put what it needs there.  Also just make an empty /mnt directory and put your devices in later--otherwise I'm not sure what would happen if you were copying your /mnt/newroot to itself, but I'm sure it wouldn't be good.
I tried to just install grub on the slave with #grub-install /dev/sdb and it said it installed fine but when I switched the slave to master and disconnected the old master, grub wouldn't boot (probably because it was installed to /dev/sdb?) so I had to use the arch install disk to install grub.  Then, much to my surprise--like I had any doubts--I rebooted and now I'm posting this with the newly copied Arch with xfce4.
It might not be a bad idea to backup any really important stuff but you are just copying and unless you do something silly, everything should work fine.

  • Question about moving CS5.5 to another hard drive on same PC

I'd like to move my CS5.5 to another drive on the same system, purely a question of real estate on C drive, now crowded to the max. I have a 1 Terabyte drive that I want to move this suite to. I'm sure I would have to deactivate and uninstall before doing so and hope that CS5.5 can live on the non-C drive as well.
Outside of deactivating, what other factors might I be overlooking? Thank you in advance.

Bossman344 the Creative Suite 5.5 should support the custom installation.  Please be aware that shared components and certain required resources will always be installed to your primary drive.
Is your C drive an SSD?

  • Moving extra content to another hard drive

    Hi,
Not sure if this is the right area to ask this, but here goes.
I recently upgraded to FCS2, and I could have sworn that I had selected an external HDD I had attached and switched on.
When I look at the directory where I said for the files to go it's empty, and since the space on the iMac's HDD space has gone done, I assume that it's not gone to the external.
Is there an easy way to move the file to the external drive, and tell the various programs of there new location?
    Any ideas?

If you're going to move media (such as files from the capture scratch folder) to an external, or any other drive, just drag the files over, and let them copy.
When you open the project that requires those files, you will prompted to relink them.
If you've upgraded to a new version of FCS, you will also be asked if you want to save the project in the new format, making it unopenable in an older version; if you still plan on using the older version, just do a 'save as' for your project.

  • TS4498 Can i move my installation of Logic 10 to another hard drive, as its nearly full and i want to free up space so i can install the additional audio files too.

    Hi All,
....i've recently bought and downloaded Logic Pro X.........the software is great.......i love it. But when i bought it from apple, it gave me no choice where to install it. It just went ahead and installed it in the drive which has my operating system in it. Which, in itself is not a problem........but, in my case, the hard drive in question is almost full...........so when i decided to add the additional audio files which come with Logic...........a message was displayed that not enough free space is available for additional audio files.......please remove files to free up space!
I would love to free up space, but i only have a small 64gb SSD (which is where my operating system is installed). Normally, by moving files around (to another hard drive for example) would be the answer to this problem, but.........and here's the problem..........Logic, and my operating system cannot be moved to another hard drive, once installed it seems logic is there for good.
Come on Apple!!!!!!!!!!.................i have a terrabyte of space on my other hard drive!! ready and waiting for some music files and or Logic!!!!  .........why on earth could you not of given me the option of an installation disk choice!!!!!
.......well, it seems i'm stuffed now, and £130 lighter in the pocket. I could be the next Mody or Fat Boy Slim............but alas............it's not even looking like i'm gonna even be a one hit wonder.
........if anyone knows how to move logic to another destination drive, please help and when i'm famous, i'll sing at your wedding :-)

The vast majority of applications must be install on the system drive in order to run correctly.
Generally the applications take up very little disk space. It is usually the files they produce that need the space. Seeing as how I don't use Logic I can't do this but you might want to check how to move the files generated by Logic to another drive.

  • Do I have to deactivate my lightroom 5 installation before moving it to a new hard drive as with Photoshop elements 10?

I cannot find any way to deactivate my Lightroom 5 install prior to moving it to another hard drive like I did on my Photoshop Elements 10 .

There is no activation/deactivation process with Lightroom. Just install it on the new hard drive. You might need your serial number.

  • How to move all graphic files to another hard drive?

Sorry that I do not even understand the program well enough to use the specific terms but my wife is using Photoshop Elements 4 and has thousands of graphic files. She wants to move them all to another hard drive to free up space on C drive.
1 - How do we move all the files without confusing the organizer? My wife found a move function but still has two problems: 1- Can't figure out how to tell the program where to put the files (seems like it may have just created another copy on C drive). 2- the organizer has to reconnect to every single file that is moved - a process that takes hours.
2 - How do we change the settings so that Elements will store files on the new G drive instead of continuing to put everything on C drive? Most of her new files are camera uploads and scans.
3 - After we get the files set up on G drive, is there an easy way to identify and remove the old files on the C drive? (Judging from the amount of space that is filling up on the C drive, it seems that the program must have duplicated the files on C drive in our previous attempts to move files.)

I can help with some of this...
The simple way to move the files is using Folder View. You can then simply drag and drop images - or whole folders - to the new drive. It will take a little while to sort out the catalog, but nothing painful. No reconnecting is necessary.
Go to Edit/Preferences. There is a setting there that determines where image files are stored.

  • New laptop - can't get I-tunes to recognise tune files on hard drive?

Hello. My old sony vaio crashed. I had previously backed up all the music files from I-Tunes onto ext hard drive. Now I have new laptop, loaded I-Tunes and copied all the tunes back from the ext hard drive onto the new laptop. Trouble is I-Tunes won't see 'em, keeps saying something about my library being registered on another machine (guess it's my defunct one?). So is there a way I can get I-Tunes on the new laptop to see the music files I've dragged back from the ext hard drive. I did not back up any other files, system type things - just the tunes. Hope that makes sense and look forward to replies. Cheers - Snoopdougydoug

  • How can i import my itune files on to another hard drive...

I need to reinstall MAC OS X onto my iMac. This is the computer which has all of my itunes files. How can I transfere the itune files onto another hard drive (via my network) and re transfere it on to my iMac once the OS reinstalled? I have bought many albums from iTunes store and would hate to loose them.
    Thanks for the Help

JLdM: Try moving the entire iTunes folder back, and if that doesn't work, reimport the music. The computer will need to be reauthorized.
jwhmd: Follow the instructions in this article.

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • How do I save and import my bookmarks from another hard drive? When I try to open the installed Firefox on the old drive, it (obviously) opens a browser from the new main drive, free of bookmarks. Is there a way I can save the bookmarks on the old drive w

How do I save and import my bookmarks from another hard drive? When I try to open the installed Firefox on the old drive, it (obviously) opens a browser from the new main drive, free of bookmarks. Is there a way I can save the bookmarks on the old drive without opening a browser?
The guts of my computer were rearranged and I got a new main hard drive. My old one is still in there and I can get stuff from it, but when I go to the Mozilla folder on the old one, I can't figure out if there's anything I can do to get all my bookmarks from that drive to my new one, where Firefox is newly installed.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.
    See:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.
