Moving to Vista
Hi all,
This is a heart-felt plea for advice re. What's This? help.
We have been using Robohelp Office X3 for some time using a
Robohelp HTML project to generate a main CHM help file and a
separate Robohelp for Word "What's This? Help Composer" project to
generate a .HLP file that we then use via Robohelp's CSH.lib.
That system has worked really well for us up until now, but
with the advent of Vista we need to move to a sensible alternative
as we're aware that WinHelp is dead.
Could someone please suggest how we should approach this? I
have spent quite some time reading online and in various versions
of Robohelp's documentation but cannot find the answer. It seems
like it should be possible to import out What's This Help Composer
project straight into our existing Robohelp HTML (CHM) project but
whatever way I try to do this I seem to fail to make significant
progress.
If someone could spare a couple of minutes to point me in the
right direction I would be extremely grateful. Upgrading to Adobe
Robohelp v6 or v7 is entirely feasible if that would solve the
problem or make it easier.
*Many* thanks in advance,
Matt
Aha! I found the answer. Anyone wishing to migrate their
Robohelp What's This? help from WinHelp (.hlp) file to HTML Help
(.chm) so that it works on Windows Vista should do the following:
1) If you don't already have one, create a new HTML Help
project using Robohelp HTML (main menu: File -> New Project then
choose HTML Help) and satisfy yourself that you can create a .CHM
file from that.
2) Now, under the "File" menu on the main menu you now have
the option "New What's This? Help Project...". Choose that and
you'll find yourself in "What's This? Help Composer". Hold on,
though, Robohelp HTML doesn't support "What's This? Help Composer"
does it? It doesn't appear on the set of tools and you're forced to
go back to Robohelp for Word to use it... Not true. In fact,
Robohelp HTML supports "What's This? Help Composer" if you start it
up via this "New What's This? Help Project".
3) Use "What's This? Help Composer?" in exactly the same way
you used to for WinHelp projects - that is, load up your app and
DLLs then add your help text to each dialog control, etc.
4) Now close "What's This? Help Composer" and go back to your
HTML project. You'll see that the mythical "context.txt" file
referenced in Robohelp documentation has been magically created.
Double clicking it takes you back in the composer to edit your
What's This? help.
5) Compile your HTML project to produce your .CHM file. This
includes embedded What's This? Help content (apparently the
context.txt file is actually compiled in there somewhere).
6) Nearly there. That's the What's This? help safely in the
.CHM, but how does our app get it out again? Simple. Instead of
copying MsCSH.lib into your project and linking against that, you
need a different library. Copy MsCSHtml.lib from your Robohelp HTML
installation (in my case it was in C:\Program Files\RoboHelp
Office\RoboHTML\whatsths\ProgDlls) and link against that instead of
MsCSH.lib.
7) Change the first parameter of your CSHInitialize() call at
the start of your app to use the .CHM file instead of the .HLP
file.
8) Make sure CsHtml.dll is available to your final,
release-build app at runtime (e.g. by copying it into the same
directory).
That's it! What's This? help now works on both Windows XP and
Vista (didn't try any others but I presume they work). I used
Robohelp Office X3 so we don't even need to upgrade to fix our
What's This? help for Vista.
Now... answers on the back of a postcard explaining to me why
that isn't really, really easy information to find? I couldn't find
that anywhere either on the web generally, on Adobe's site or in
Robohelp's own help (which ironically seems to be a little
lacking).
Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted we can continue to use
Robohelp for this as the other options seem far worse, but given
that many developers are currently going through the pain of fixing
their apps to work on Vista, a little help on this would have gone
a long way.
Hopefully by publishing my process here, I can save someone
else the time.
Cheers,
Matt
P.S. Oh, one thought - anyone know a way to import all the
work I did in the WinHelp What's This? Help Composer project into
my new HTML What's This? Help Composer project? Seems a shame to
have to enter it all again by hand. Is there an automated method
that anyone knows of? Thanks again.

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109788.0I use QT in Authorware fairly frequently. I don't find it
particularly
buggy, though some of the sprite functions don't seem to
be...well
implemented. I agree it can be a pain to use, especially with
not
everyone having QT already installed and Apple's licensing...
However, if indeed Tom's not getting the responsiveness he
needs, then I
echo the suggestion of an MP3 in Flash. Or, didn't Apurva
make an MP3
player for Authorware? Or maybe it was a published Authorware
product
that acted as an MP3 player...

File weirdness since moving to Vista
Edit - Never mind. Idiot error... I was placing files in the
document directory of another user profile. Still adjusting to the
differences in Vista. *sigh*
Scenario: Work on a file outside of DW, save file to site
local directory on hard drive, or into another unrelated directory,
then try to access that file from within DW and it doesn't show up.
For example, edit a file in PhotoShop and save it. Exit PhotoShop
and get into DW, then try to call up image for insertion into a
page, but file open dialog in DW doesn't show it's there. Windows
Explorer sees it fine. This happens whether I place the image into
the local site directly, or save it elsewhere on the hard drive...
Dreamweaver won't show it. Reverse is also true... if I create a
file within DW and save it, then look at my local site directory in
Windows Explorer, the file isn't there. I CAN drag and drop file(s)
from Windows Explorer into the site directories within DW and
they'll work fine, but it's driving me nuts that I can't see them
otherwise.
This behavior just started when I got a new system with
Vista. With previous XP system I could edit, add, delete files
outside of DW and the site's file list within DW would update
accordingly (or I could open a file dialog and see them in some
other directory). Cache is enabled and I've tried recreating the
site cache manually. I suspect it's some Vista thing, however,
since I had similar behavior in other apps (create a file in
Windows Paint, save it, then I'm unable to locate the file from
within PhotoShop's Open File dialog, for example).
Any clues? At best, this makes it difficult to work. At
worst, it's going to drive me insane!

pavard1This is not really an appropriate question for this forum - it's for the specific Apple product called Apple Remote Desktop which is for managing networked Macs - but you forward the ports to the iMac's internal IP address, the one assigned to it via the Airport (setting a static IP address usually is better, though, since it won't change when you restart the Mac). This may be of help:

When I start firefox 6.0 beta, the mouse pointer disappears once firefox has initialized itself. If I move the mouse pointer, it reappears, then disappears again when it is at rest.
If I disable the flash plugin, the mouse pointer behaves normally, i.e. it is always visible.Firefox 5.0 does the same thing as stated above.

Beta 2 is real, slow and you have alot of updates to DL, but both are pre-release products and will not work 100%.
Even when Vista is released, they will still be alot of hardware that will not work 100% and this is purely because software is always playing catch up to hardware.
It was only September, when Nvidia released some Beta2/RC1 drivers that worked properly........ -

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109294.0Thanks for the compliment. This system cost me well over 4k. You can see why I am not amused as to why I cannot play COD4. HL2E2 was great. What I have been teased with in COD4 is amazing.
Anyway, the BSOD's I get in Vista 64 are the atikmdag.sys not responding. After a quick dump the system reboots. I have forgotten about trying things in Vista. Getting it to work in XP would make me very happy. In XP and Vista, when launching COD4, the freeze is a complete system lockup at the logos and not a crash back to the desktop. I have to manually reset the system. I am not overclocking anything. Although my Diamond Radeon 2900's are factory overclocked. I have lowered the clocks for the gpu and memory for both cards and still the same freezing persists when lanuching COD4. During my stripdown and rebuild, I have tried COD4 with no sound card and the onboard sound disabled in BIOS from a fresh XP install. No luck. I havent used CoreCenter or LiveUpdate in a long time. I manually download the chipset files from the MSI site, unzip and install them. I have tried the drivers included with the motherboard, video cards, ATI site, MSI site all to no avail. I have tried the CCC drivers all the way back to 7.10. I just cannot get COD4 to launch anymore. -
