MPEG2 output

In FCP 4.5 MPEG2 appears as a quicktime export format choice. I have done a clean install on a new computer of FCP Studio 5.0 and MPEG2 is no longer an option. Is there a way to restore this? Is this their way of forcing use of Compressor?

Compressor and QT export is the same engine.
Compressor has so many options and variables. It truly is an exception piece of software.
Most people seem afraid to use.
Take a look at rippletraining's "The Art of Encoding using Compressor."

  • Deinterlaced playback of MPEG Streamclip MPEG2 output with QT Player Pro

SOmetimes I use MPEG Streamclip to convert my DVD video to a file using the "MPEG2 with MP2 audio" option.
QT Player Pro plays these back fine except it refuses to deinterlace, even if I select the deinterlace option in the QT Movie Properties window, and even if I resave the file with deinterlace selected.
VLC deinterlaces the video even if I have deinterlacing deselected. DVD player deinterlaces the DVD video fine but won't open the stand-alone MPEG2 files.
Is there anything I'm missing? Is there a way to get QT Player Pro to deinterlace playback of MPEG2 without converting to a different format?
    Thanks!

Is there anything I'm missing? Is there a way to get QT Player Pro to deinterlace playback of MPEG2 without converting to a different format?
Not sure which specific settings you may be using. Therefore, here are some comments/peculiarities of which you should be aware when using interlace/deinterlace/MPEG2 settings:
    Interlaced Scaling
If you are scaling an interlaced file to a different height, you can tell MPEG Streamclip to preserve interlacement and scale each video field separately by checking "Interlaced Scaling". If you don't, interlacement will be lost in the scaled movie, and, worse, you will get many visual artifacts. This setting is now enabled by default; remember to disable it with progressive files.
Interlacement requires a frame height of more than 288 pixels. If the frame height of the source file is up to 288, interlaced scaling will not be enabled. If the frame height you have chosen for the exported movie is up to 288 and you check "Interlaced Scaling", MPEG Streamclip discards the lower field before scaling the picture (i.e. it performs a fast deinterlacing by dropping one field).
    Reinterlace Chroma
If you are converting an interlaced MPEG-1/MPEG-2 file, you may wish to "reinterlace" chroma. By checking "Reinterlace Chroma" you can enable a special remapping of 4:2:0 chroma lines so they will be split correctly between the two video fields. This is a very advanced option: only professional users may see the difference in the output movie. This option is enabled by default; disable it when you are sure your file is not interlaced.
This option has no effect if the source stream is not an MPEG-1/MPEG-2 stream.
    Deinterlace Video
If you have an interlaced file, you may also want to deinterlace it, usually to convert into a progressive format, get a "film" effect and have a better playback on the computer's display. When you check the option "Deinterlace Video", MPEG Streamclip enables a special motion-adaptive deinterlacer, and it deinterlaces the lower field in the parts that contain motion, and preserves video quality of all parts that do not contain motion; the upper field is left unchanged. This option slows down the conversion.
Please note that if you are changing the height of an interlaced stream (that is, you are telling MPEG Streamclip to perform vertical scaling) then you must enable either "Interlaced Scaling" or "Deinterlace Video" (at your own choice), otherwise you will see bad video artifacts in the converted movie.
Not sure this will be of any real benefit in your case, but thought I should point it out for your consideration and see how it applies to your particular work flow.

  • Compressor mpeg2 output need square pixels

    Hi,
For use in a media player I have to output my FCP work to mpeg2 16:9 quare pixels 1024x576. These optioned are greyed out in Compressor, any way to fix this?
    Tia

    hi.
    thanks for the feedback.
the are some programs like Flash that are widely used in the animation filed and that only output Square pixels. I know that Flash files have been used in broadcast work.
i am wondering if there is a output setting someone is aware of in FCP such that it would alter the dimensions in such a way that that the new files would not appear distorted. for example if you select the files in the time line and go to the motion tab and alter the aspect ratio to -12 you get something workable but with a letterbox look. I am wondering if there is another solution other that the one that you have made clear.

  • MPEG2 Output Final Cut Pro or Quicktime

Does anyone know if there is a plugin available or setting in Final Cut that will allow me to export my video as an MPEG2 file?
    Thanks,
    Michael Howard

    Hi
What version of Studio or FCP are you running?
Before FCP 5 it was included the MPEG2 export component inside Quicktime. From version 5 it was removed and you must use Compressor to encode MPEG2 files.

  • Setting Progressive Wrecks Output Quality

I have a Premiere sequence that contains only progressive footage, all comps rendered from After Effects.  The Premiere project is PAL widescreen, which by default sets to Lower Field first.
The client wants this as MPEG2, so I add the sequence to Media Encoder.  It reports the source as Lower Field, as it would, but I need the output to be Progressive, so I set that in the Basic Video Settings dialog.
I can see in the preview that the quality deteriorates severely, with edges pixellating and textures fizzing and swimming through shot as the camera moves.  Nasty.
If I set the output to Lower Field, the quality is fine.
I don't understand why setting Progressive, deinterlacing, is doing so much damage to the output - it's wholly unacceptable to me and the client, but I'm a bit stuck and need some help please.
The client is putting this movie onto kiosks, and the media players they use, according to the supplier, need CBR 5.5 Mbps and Progressive.  I can query why not Lower Field, but that aside, it's this issue of setting Progressive doing so much damage.
    Thank you for any help.
    Julian.

I think I've figured out how to sort this out.
    I found this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3780954#3780954
Which is a not dissimilar issue, at least on the quality hit.  So I created a new sequence, but this time changed the default Lower Field First to Progressive, in Sequence Settings.  Now I'm getting the expected decent MPEG2 output - progressive footage, progressive sequence, progressive output.
I went through alot of formats this morning, both in Premiere and Media Encoder, but in every case, outputting the Premiere sequence (set to Lower Field) as Progressive, resulted in badly degraded video.
I guess what threw me was that I jumped from Premiere Pro 6.5 to CS5.5, and in Pro 6.5 I recall you would set a PAL Widescreen sequence which was Lower Field first, load up both progressive and interlaced footage, edit that, then output a Progressive file without problems.
I'm wondering now what CS5.5 is actually doing to cause this issue, and indeed what I should do if I need to mix Progressive and Lower Field ... on this experience, use a Progressive sequence I guess.  I suppose I had better run some tests and get familiar with how and what.
    Julian.

  • QT movie mostly black after burn/Best way from DV /w 12 bit audio to MPEG2?

    Sorry for combining two questions.....
My Quick Time movie looks fine in the QT player but when added to iDVD and then burned, a few frames look OK and then it mostly goes black, as if a terrible filter has been applied. I'm running OS10.4.6 with QT7.0 and iDVD6. The QT movie was output from Avid free DV cause the original had 12 bit audio which foiled iMovie (and One-Step iDVD). Once it's in QT format, this should no longer be an issue, right? And this problem is with the video, not audio.....
Are there free QT to MPEG2 compressers out there? If so, I will burn the DVD myself...
And what's the best and cheapest app to go directly from 12 bit audio DV source footage to an MPEG2 output movie appropriate for DVD? I don't need fancy editing tools - I just wanna get my footage onto DVD.
    Any help is appreciated!

I can't download from the Sony because of the fried FireWire IC... Any tape recorded in the Sony is then imported from the Canon. BTW, the new version of the ZR100 is ZR500.
'Ya know, I'm glad you asked this question. I took a 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable and connected both camcorders to see if I could record from the Sony to Canon. It works.
Not only that, but I can import from the Sony now into iMovie 6... It wouldn't even show up in System Profiler last summer. I'm now wondering if it was something in Tiger. It wouldn't show up on my neighbor's G5 either, and we keep our systems up-to-date. Maybe it needed a rest.
the QT movie going black after iDVD burn? Think that is due to QT7?
7.1 fixed two problems for me. Try it.

  • No audio in Mpeg2 file.

I have three avi files from a parade. When I export them to adobe media encoder, the audio only works on one file. I use these settings:
    4:3
    Lower Interlaced
CBR with PCM audio (8mbps with the 25 minute file (the only one that works) and 4mbps with the 60 minute avi file and the 55 minute avi file (neither end up with audio intact).
    Set the multiplexing to DVD.
I have used these settings many many times and they have worked great...but not this time.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Compressor 2.0.1 and Mpeg2. What to do?

I know this has been discussed to death... I have searched and read alot of posts. I find posts that link to other posts.. that have now dropped off the forum. So it has been a little hard to get a solid idea of where to go from this point. I'm hoping a few of you can chime in here with your opinion on the current capability of compressor for MPEG2 2-pass VBR encoding, and how to achieve acceptable results.
I have had problems encoding 2-pass VBR mpeg2 files. I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes. I have attributed this to the known problems with compressor, and have been using 1-pass CBR at about 7.0mbps. The results are ok but much softer than the original footage on DV Tape.
Is the situation really as bad as it seems with compressor? Should I invest in a different encoder for encoding MPEG2 for DVD, and if so which encoder... and how much am I going to have to spend?
err.. I'm frustrated with the whole thing!
    Thanks,
    Matt

I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes.
That doesn't sound much like what I'm seeing with Compressor's two-pass VBR. The only unresolved quality-of-image problem I've seen in Compressor 2 is the random occurrence of compression artifacts and these look just like the type of defect that you see when you use a very low bit rate setting (in fact, based upon my analysis with Digigami's MPressionist that's exactly what they are). So, you may select a high-quality 6.2Mbps setting but intermittently and rarely you may see a few frames that look like they were done at 2Mbps (or similar).
Are you sure you aren't seeing the defects that are caused by using Compressor v1.X presets with Compressor 2? That particular problem caused small to medium sized blocks of white or near white to "dance" around in parts of your MPEG2 encodings. This latter problem is avoided by simply removing or not using presets that were created in earlier versions of Compressor (pre-version 2.0). If that could be your problem, refer to the following link from Apple:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?linkprocess_@@.68b5fbd7
As for the two-pass VBR compression artifacts I mentioned earlier, some installations seem to have them while others do not (or the ones that seem not to have the problem just haven't noticed the random artifacts).
In my experience, the degree of problems with two-pass VBR seem to vary from job to job. Some sequences may only be very mildly degraded (or visually unaffected) while others will have obvious and distracting artifacts. I think it may depend upon the nature of the video and the length of your sequences. Of course, those two variables can combine in a number of ways, so you really can't predict what may or may not turn out okay.
To be fair, however, you've got to note that some users seem pretty confident that their systems are free from this problem. Some even claim that Compressor 2 produces better output than did previous versions of the software. I've also read one review that was written by a professional videographer that said that Compressor 2 produced the finest MPEG2 output that he had ever seen (posted on the internet by a commercial, pro-oriented media outlet) . It seems pretty obvious that your so-called mileage may vary.

  • How to make small change in old "finished" project

I'm now working in PPCS3. I want to retitle, but no other changes, a project I did 2 years ago in PP2. I have the MPEG2 output of that project, but did not keep the source material and prproj file. I do have the background clip for the title. I could put the old MPEG2 on the timeline of a new project, overlay the new title material at 100 opacity and fade it to the original at its end. This would be easy to do, but would the bulk of the project suffer noticably from rerendering the already compressed MPEG2 material? I could do the title piece as a new project, but can't figure out how to chop off the front-end title seconds from the original MPEG2 to join it up with the new title segment. Are there any other options, and any advice on which way to go?

From Harm's reply, I guess I didn't make one question in my plea clear. Forget the reference to "title" footage, is there a utility that will modify an m2v file to remove a selected number of video frames at one (front) end? I realize one or two compression cycles would have to be redone and would suffer. Second question, could such a utility replace the removed frames with a new m2v segment? To do the compression at the "splice" there would need to be overlap and again the quality of that splice region would suffer a bit, but the rest of the m2v would be in "new" condition. For what its worth, my original m2v was done with CBR encoding and I have several still frame segments of a second or more which should be OK for the splice, if it is possible at all.
Thanks for your constructive comment, Jim.

  • Re: weird dashed line....

Hello, Im getting a weird vertical flashing dashed line through my exported videos? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ok. just for some background: I shoot everything HDV 1440 & export 720x480/letterbox as our current Nexus sys is SD only. HD down converted to SD, is better than SD.
So, below are the settings per Leightronix/Nexus:
    Format: MPEG2
    output: 720x480 29.97 Quality 5.0, Lower
VBR, 2 Pass, Min 6.00, Target 8.00, Max 10.00 Mbps
    MPEG, 224 kbps, 48khz, 16bit, Stereo

  • Importing digital photographs in FCP

I recently imported two series of digitalized pictures in two different FCP projects.
In the first case, the MPEG2 compression gave excellent results. In the second case, the quality was not so good as in the first time....
In both cases, the size of the pictures had been adjusted to 2Mo with photoshop after scanning them (they are argentic originals in both cases) at very high definition (several tens of Mo).
What couuld be the reason(s) for such a variability ?
Is the 2 Mo size a proper one or should I use bigger ones ( I used 2 Mo because the projects contained quite a lot of pictures and I was afraid that the project be too big at the end when the music was added..)
    Thanks in advance
    Bernard

    <
The abbreviation Mo seems to mean megabytes in countries other than the USA. We are starting to see it often along with To.
The size of the imported pictures is not relevant since they are not part of the finished movie. Only the rendered video clips of the photos are in the movie.
The differences between your MPEG2 output files could be caused by dozens of subtle factors. No way to know from here, sorry.
Getting superb MPEG2 output is a refined craft and Compressor is fully capable of the task but the interface can be useless in achieving the best results until you spend many hours in the application.
Video is hard, compression is harder.

  • Working with long projects

I have a four hour long project that I would prefer to place on a single DVD. Can this be done with Compressor? Everything I have done to date fits within that 150 min.setting for DVD Best Quality.

I am starting a fairly large project (about 1 hr 15min total running time) that will have a little bit of special effects (FCP, some Motion) and a few audio tracks. I just threw together a project of the same length and am testing it now. Should I expect Compressor to take 20 hours to encode it into good quality mpeg 2? (that's what I am seeing on the screen now - I haven't rendered or exported anything) I am used to long waits when working with larger projects but that seems a bit much.
If you're using Export Using Compressor on an unrendered timeline of 75 minutes on a PowerBook then, yes, that's a very normal encoding time (especially for a timeline with many filters and/or motion effects).
However, when I use this method, I find the MPEG2 output to be substantially better than any other workflow using the Final Cut Studio apps.
Of course, if you don't need the best quality - say for a proof disc to be given to your client to check off on - I'd simply drop a QT reference movie into Compressor. Using the Fastest Encode possible, of course.

  • Encore is Reporting incorrect Blu-Ray Project size/length

    Hello,
I've exported a 45 minute Premiere project into mpeg-2 bluray, and the file is about 10 gb. When bringing into encore and creating a timeline, the video is correct, but audio track is about 15 times longer than the video, and reported project size is 215gb.
I can play the file correctly in media player and premiere - any ideas?
    Thanks a million,
    Jonathan

    Jonathan,
You've covered a lot of ground since my last post!
You should be able to see the issue in Pr - I can.
Try playing the H.264 file in either Quicktime player (if you have it installed) or KMPlayer (my favorite "free" player).  If you don't see artifacts there, then the MC keyframe issue is not the problem.
You should try CBR and any other parameter variations you can think of - that's what I'm doing here.  In my tests, moving the keyframes closer together just results in more frequent artifacts.  But that can be a good thing when you're testing.   I'm still researching this issue.
For your tests, make sure you are using unique file names each and every time you export from Pr; otherwise En will get very fussy and start giving you errors.
Also, while testing different file lengths and encoding schemes, you should be using a dedicated test project in En.  Don't go anywhere near your real project.
Please heed Jon's advice and use a BD-RE for all of your test burns to disc.  As he does, I test disc images by mounting them with SlySoft's VirtualCloneDrive (also free).
What is your source material in Pr?  Is it some form of 24p or 24pa HDV?  Is it any form of 24p?  If so, make sure it's interpreted correctly in Pr, and then make sure that En interprets the MPEG2 output from Pr correctly.
    -Jeff
