Mpxio or Powerpath -- with EMC SANs?

We have some new T3-1B's running on Solaris 10.
We normally use PowerPath, but I'm trying to see if we can just use mpxio and be done. However, the issue I'm running into is the following.
1. I dont have any way of determining which LUN is what -- in the CX500--I use the LUN Name to determine what the disk needs to be assigned to. I see only the WWN. With Oracle RAC, it's extremely important to make sure the disks are correct to each node.
2. When adding new disks to the host, the new LUN does not appear on the host even after luxadm probe, and repeated devfsadm. Am I missing anything else? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what kind of commentary you are looking for.
We use Powerpath on Solaris 10 (x86 now, but in the past on T5120s) for multipathing to LUNs on EMC VNX and CX4 SANs. We followed the EMC Powerpath setup guide for Solaris 10 exactly.
After disabling MPxIO, Powerpath was able to take control. Some older versions of powerpath had a bug where the pseudo names for LUNs would change causing some headaches.
We keep a mapping of LUN to pseudo name to solaris dsk labels
If you use ZFS I have found a 1:1 match between the zfs_max_vdev_pending value and the max queued-IOs value shown in Powerpath
When we've had to fail/trespass LUNs over to other SPs on the EMC SANs, Powerpath has handled this elegantly with the expected warnings in /var/adm/messages
I recall that we had to explicitly set the powerpath options for CLARiiON and VNX to managed and the policy to claropt
When adding LUNs, to see all paths there is a routine to go through with cfgadm, devfsadm and the powerpath utilities. We use qlogic HBAs and the qlc leadville driver.

  • MPxIO vs PowerPath for EMC SAN - Solaris 10

I'm just wondering what everyone's experience has been with either option.  We are in the process of upgrading to a T5120 server using Solaris 10 and Oracle 9i (we can't upgrade yet due to limitations in our current blood bank software) and connect to an EMC SAN.  Our vendor says that his preference is PowerPath because he's heard of systems hanging up when MPxIO option is used.  Any ideas?

  • WAE- 674 with EMC SRDF Traffic Question ?

    Hi all,
I have a WAAS demo at a customer.
I have installed two WAE 674 boxes inline, at both ends of a 50mbps Metro Ethernet line between two EMC SANs. These EMC storages perform huge data replication during the day. All of the traffic  is EMC SRDF traffic, nothing else.
Before putting the WAEs inline, the Metro line utilization had been around 49Mbps, ok so the WAN link was fully utilized.  WAE 674s installed and bandwidth usage has dropped %12 percent, something around 44 Mbps.
EMC guys are telling me that, before WAAS, it used to take 7 hours to copy a 40GB data from one site to the other, with WAAS it came down to 1.5 hours. So yeah I know story is great so far.
What I dont understand is the attached graphics taken from CM, WAE1 and WAE2. All I see is %20 reduction in original traffic. Shouldnt this value be much greater than that ? Otherwise what could be the reason of having much shorter replication times compared to before ?
I have gone through couple of datasheets and marketing slides about WAEs and I have seen that with EMC replication traffic WAAS causes at least 2x optimization.
Both WAEs have default configs, so I havent customized anything in the SRDF classifier on WAAS.
I would really appreciate it, if some of you , can go through the screenshots that I attached and give me some thoughts and diretion to what value to customized and etc.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Fonts are replaced with Adobe Sans in PDF

Receive PDF files from a client every month, 3 of the fonts in the file (Fortis Helvetica Bold, Fortis Helvetica Light Bold, and Fortis Helvetica Light) are not embedded. Fonts have been supplied and are installed in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts and C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Resource\Font folders.
This has been working fine for over a year, all fonts load up in acobat, but for some reason  now, the font "Fortis Helvetica Bold" is not loading up in Acrobat and is being replaced with Adobe Sans.
    Any help would be appreciated.

It may also be that they have changed to a different version of the font. Just because it has the same name as one on your system does not mean they are compatible. In reality, your customer should embed all fonts. Have them change to a press or print job settings file and that should resolve the problem by embedding the fonts.

  • Font problems with Gill Sans Light in Dreamweaver

The following site: www.cabrackett.com/testSite has a very small testing html page illustrating a problem I have been having with Gill Sans Light.
In Dreamweaver CS4 Design View, Gill Sans Light displays properly. When viewed in a browser (Firefox 3.5.3) or in Live View, a generic serifed font shows up. Assuming that the only reason for this could be improper installation of the Gill Sans Light font, I opened MS Word and the Gill Sans Light font works perfectly.
Also, when Gill Sans Bold is used, instead of light, the font does show up properly in all cases: Design View, Live View, and Firefox.
Any ideas what is going on? If the Light font were corrupted then how could it work in MS Word?
    Thanks,
    Chuck
    MacPro, OSX 10.5.8, Dreamweaver CS4, Firefox 3.5.3

As Joe says, Gill Sans Light isn't "web-safe" because browsers rely on the font being present on the user's computer. I don't have Gill Sans Light on my computer, but I do have Gill Sans MT. As soon as I changed your CSS to Gill Sans MT, it worked.
Because fonts are dependent on what is available on the user's computer, you should always specify several fonts in order of preference, and end with a generic font (serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive, or fantasy). For example:
    body {
      font-family:"Gill Sans Light", "Gill Sans MT", Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif;
The first one available on the user's computer will be displayed. If none is available, a generic sans-serif font will be used instead.

  • Integration with EMC Centera

    Hi,
Has anyone used Content DB/Records DB with EMC Centera? Can't find much documentation about it anywhere but have found some notes about how to archive data off to Centera but nothing about getting it back. Specifically, if we query Centera with the C-Clip Content Address, how do we convert the Centera Binary Object back in to a form we can process? I suppose it will have to come back through Oracle Records DB? Is this information still recorded as folders in the Content Manager?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ian

    Hi Ian,
if you configured your CDB/RDB to archive content to EMC Centera, then only the binary content object will move out of the database schema into Centera. All other metadata information and relationships like folder structure, name, creator, create date, etc, will remain in the database repository of CDB/RDB.
It is absolutely transparent for any end user or custom code where the content is actually stored. The business logic of CDB/RDB knows how to get the content back to the client, no matter if it is stored as BLOB in the database, BFILE on a filesystem or as a binary object in Centera. Centera does not know what type of content it is nor any relationship to any origin folder. In this case Centera is just used as a dumb content store.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cisco Twinax Cables Compatibiltiy with EMC VNX/VNXe

    Hi,
I would like to know about Cisco Twinax Cables Compatibiltiy with EMC VNX/VNXe series storage - for connectivity between UCS Fabric Interconnect and EMC VNX/VNXe.
Are the following Cisco Twinax Cables compatible with EMC's VNX and VNXe serie platforms:
    SFP-H10GB-CU1M= 1-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-CU3M= 3-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-CU5M= 5-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive
    SFP-H10GB-ACU7M= 7-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, active
    SFP-H10GB-ACU10M= 10-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, active
    Kindly advice. Thanks.

    Hi,
I'd like to confirm you, that passive assembly is supported. Haven't tried the actives one yet.
    I'm using UCS-B200 M3, and EMC VNX 5300.
the EMC VNX5300 (Block Level) connected using 2 type of media. Copper (SFP-H10GB-CU5M= 5-m 10G SFP+ Twinax cable assembly, passive) and Fiber Channel 8 GB directly info Fabric Interconnect 6248 ports.
For old server the connection is via iSCSI 10GB Copper. and for UCS-B200 M3 is via FC 8GB.
All my configuration is running well.
    Hope thats helped.

  • ONS with EMC

    Hi,
We are planning to use ONS with EMC in order for replicating disk storage asynchronously to a remote location. Estimated bandwidth requirement is 240Mbps and I think that this can be possible by using 2xOC3 link from our telco provider.
Is there a configuration of ONS which enables connection for disk storages over Gigabit lines and aggregated OC3 SONET/SDH links between two locations? I see some documents on CCO describing this but I am not able to find the details because I'm not familiar with the technology. Any help such as URL links for design and configuration options on CCO or just recommendations for doing this or answers including yes or no would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    turkeer

Take a look at the CE-1000-4 Card. It appears to be tailor made for what you need.
You should find it in the ONS15454 doc lib.
Done right, there is not much to configure since the transport mechanisim is pretty blind to what you are putting on the fiber.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum with 90nm San Diego 4000+

    Hello everyone,
My first post here. Tomorrow I'm purchasing a K8N Neo4 Platinum MB (non SLI) and have requested the retail seller to get me a 90nm San Diego 4000+ instead of the older 130nm Clawhammer 4000+. Now, after reading through this forum it appears there may be a compatibility issue with the San Diego chip. Should I change to the Clawhammer or go ahead with the San Diego. I don't plan on OCing for a couple of months. What should I do?
    Thanks!

I just fired up my K8n Neo4/sli with a 4000 rev.e chip last night, Bios is showing 3.0 and working like it should. Have it hooked to a Enermax 535 watt and One Evga 6800gt pci-e with the second card still in the box, I want to give it a good update and test before I bring the second card online, Cpu running at 35c with the side of under a Thermalright xp 90C Heatsink fan blowing down, want to test it fan blowing up next. Good luck it's a nice chip.
JJWOLD, thanks for the update, good news for me. I picked up the board last night, the rest of the stuff should be here next week. I'm going to load it with WinXP 64, which I know has limited driver support but I have three other computers so I'll just take it very slow on additional hardware and software installations. I may even use the integrated sound for now. By the way, did your board come with the 1394 cable and bracket?

  • SAN device naming conventions with EMC symmetrix

    Hi,
How CTD are named using Solaris 8 ssd drivers ?
    Regards

I've gotten around this by either using a symbolic link to the device or just doing a mknod to recreate the device special files so the names match across the cluster. You only need to do this for the OCR and Voting devices, you don't need consistent names for ASM.
If you use EMC's PowerPath software the name should be synced across the nodes, if not copy the PowerPath device data files (/etc/emcp_devicesDB.dat and .idx) from 1 nod to the other nodes and reboot. This will sync up the EMC device names too...

  • Mpxio vs powerpath

I'm building a 4 node cluster with t2000's & and an EMC CX500. I'm trying to decide between the two mp solutions. I did some performance testing and the difference between the two was negligible( powerpath did do a tad bit better )
I also like some of the information powerpath can give you. When I issue a powermt display dev=all, I get an actual Clariion LUN ID, and of course the listing of paths /states. MPXIO does a great job with path's/states but I haven't figured out how to get the LUN ID from the clarion out of mpxio. Knowing which disk's are connected where is a little harder because I have to run format and match the size of the lun with which storage groups the lun is in all the time. As this grows to many lun's, i see this as a bit of a pain.
However, with powerpath I don't understand how it integrates with sun cluster. I have searched endlessly and the few snippets I've found say that you aren't supposed to use the /dev/emcpower devices created by powerpath. If I use the /dev/did devices instead, How am I getting path failover? Are those devices somehow mapped back to the emcpower devices?
Thanks for any comments or suggestions!
    Jason

MPxIO is free (bundled with Solaris) so that's obviously some advantage.
You would normally use the /dev/did/dsk/dX devices in a cluster. Unfortunately I don't know anything about PP but you can get the disk ID from the following command:
    bash-3.00# cldevice show -v d67
    === DID Device Instances ===
    DID Device Name: /dev/did/rdsk/d67
    Full Device Path: pno1:/dev/rdsk/c6t6006048000018799018253594D313038d0
    Full Device Path: pno2:/dev/rdsk/c4t6006048000018799018253594D313038d0
    Replication: none
    default_fencing: global
    Disk ID: 6006048000018799018253594d313038
    Ascii Disk ID:
    Hope that helps a little.

    Hi,
I see lot of good input. I have done few RAC installs on sun/solaris/emc ...
Here are few things to consider.
    * ) Veritas cluster / Sun Cluster is must component or Can I use Oracle clusterware ? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using Oracl clusterware compare with varitas cluster or sun cluster
Just stay with Oracle Clusterware. If there are any issues then you only have to deal with one vendor and there will be no finger pointing. In any case Oracle Clusterware is needed even if you install Veritas/Sun.
    * ) Is cluster filesystem a compulsory component or Can I use ASM instead of Cluster File system.
For the database you can use ASM. The only time I have considered a cluster filesystem is if external tables were in use.
When you use ASM you need to partition the disk with 1 meg offset or start at cyclinder 1.
    * ) If I don't use cluster filesystem where to put CRS repository and voting disk ?
OCR and Voting Disk go on raw devices.
    * ) What is best option for Oracle_Home, is it shared oracle home or sepereate oracle_home on each node ?
Install ORACLE_HOME, ASM_HOME and CRS_HOME locally on each server.
    * ) Are there any known risks invovled in using ASM. How is the I/O performance with ASM on EMC with Solaris ? Are there any best practices
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/pdf/asm-on-emc-5_3.pdf
We have always installed 2 HBAs and used powerpath.
    * ) Is GigE okay for interconnect or do I need to go for Infiniband ?
For a majority of cases gigE is sufficient.
    * ) Is there any notes on Best practices for the above components
    Have redundancy at each level.
*) Do I need to consider fail over option for NIC's (interconnect and public), if yes, how to do that ?
You can use IPMP. Use large send/receive buffers. Enable Jumbo Frames.
