My eMac can´t read DVD+R Discs.
Mac Team or anyone,
I tried to play a DVD Movie, the disc is a DVD+R type. My eMac doesn´t recognize the disc. It does with a DVD-R disc type. The odd thing is when I go to System Settings says the following :
HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B:
Revisión del firmware: C03D
Interconexión: ATAPI
Soporte de grabación: Sí (incluido o compatible con Apple)
Caché: 2048 KB
Leer DVD: Sí
Grabar CD: -R, -RW
Grabar DVD: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Protección de falta de datos de grabación de CD: Sí
DVD de protección de falta de datos de grabación: Sí
Estrategias de escritura: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Soporte:
The Word ¨Grabar ¨means ¨Record ¨ and says it can record or burn DVD+R type discs.
In other words it must. I need some help to fix this.
Thanks
TeleHi Tele,
Here's the specifications for the eMacs http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&type=&newstype=&q=emac %20specs
I don't know which model specifically you have, but my USB 2.0 model records to them somewhat OK, with a couple minor glitches.
Here's some other links that should be of help also: http://www.news.com/2100-1041-5090559.html

Can the Mac mini's Super Drive (Early 2006) *read* DVD-R discs?
I made a back-up of a movie and burned it on to a DVD-R. I took the burned DVD and popped into my DVD player in the living room and it played just fine. I then put the burned DVD back into my mini, DVD Player.app opened and when I clicked play said the disc was invalid/unsupported (I’m not in front of my mini so don’t have the exact wording of the error). The DVD never even mounts on my desktop or Finder side bar. I went back and referenced the tech specs for my model and it reads:
Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
That just seems strange that it would burn to a DVD-R with no problem, but then not be able to read it.
I’ve put other DVD-R’s in the drive to test and the same thing. I had a back-up copy of my iPhoto library that I burned on my PowerBook on a DVD-R and this disc never mounted. I can only push the eject key on my keyboard to get the DVD out.I think I found my answer over at 123macmini.com
Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW):
writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 2.4x speed,
writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed,
writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed,
reads DVDs at up to 8x speed,
writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed,
writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed,
reads CDs at up to 24x speed -
DVD drive doesnt read DVD-R discs on Mac G4/350 AGP?
Hi,
I noticed that my DVD-ROM drive can read a DVD+R and CD-R disc just fine, but when I stick in a DVD-R disc, it just ejects it. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.
Is this normal that the DVD-ROM drive can only read in DVD+R discs? The Apple Spec page doesnt say much about this.
AndrewHi-
Try downloading and installing the Patchburn Utility. It might help your media reading. I assume this is a disk that someone burned? Could be your drive doesn't like the media, itself, or the burn speed was too high for your 5x DVD=ROM to read.
If Patchburn doesn't help, may be time to move up to a more modern drive to replace your antique.....
There is a real nice,Pioneer DVR-112 replacement you might consider.

Greetings,
My iBook G3 is a great little workhorse and I am hoping I can get more mileage out of it. Hopefully, this forum can set me straight!
I want to be able to play discs burned from a DVD recorder hooked up to my television on this iBook. The recorder we have is a cheapie TruTech DVD+RW. Much to my dismay however, the laptop isn't recognizing the burnt discs. It just spits them out. (My 17 inch Powerbook is doing the same, btw). The DVD players in my home read the burnt discs as well as a low end Compac laptop. Argh!
My questions are these:
Can the current DVD-ROM drive in my iBook (MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8176) read burnt DVD+R discs or not?
Would the currently installed drive be able to read burnt DVD-R discs?
Do I need to purchase an external DVD drive for my iBook in order to read burnt discs? I'm hoping to avoid an external device if possible.
Would a new DVD-R recorder burn discs that are readable by the current drive? Would this be the cheaper route than buying an external DVD drive?
So many questions. I am thankful there are smart, helpful people out there that can set me straight.
Thanks in Advance,
Ruben
iBook G3 Dual USB Mac OS X (10.4.5) MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8176Hi Ruben,
All DVD-R's rely on some sort of recording "dye" , even if the colour isn't apparent to you. Different ones, use different types of dyes. They also have different forms of reflective coatings. Some work better in some drives than in others.
Memorex discs can actually come out of a variety of different factories. Some of these seem to be amongst the most problematic of all in Macs.
Head to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia , type Memorex into the search field and hit return. You will see that while some Memorex discs fair quite well, others have pretty mediocre performance.
I think you should try a different brand of disc before assuming there is anything aactually wrong with your computer. There may be, of course, but disc incompatibility is so common that it is worth eliminating first.
For my part I've always found that TDK and Verbatim disks work well in all of my optical drives.
Cheers

I've used this disc a couple of times now to copy movies for viewing on a TV and it's worked just fine.
After I have watched the DVD I then erase it and copy another movie to it but this time it won't let me erase.
If I check out Info. for the Ownerships & Permissions it say "You can only read"
Any idea why it is doing this ?
ThanksHi,
I was trying to create a multi-session DVD-RW, the same way you can with a CD-RW. Though you can erase and reuse the DVD-RW, you can't create a multi-session DVD-RW using MacOS X.
I came across a few tech articles explaining how to work around this using console commands, but I'm not that brave.
=o)

Satellite Pro M30: Can't read DVDs on DVDrw drive
I cant read dvds...
i can burn them but when i start to read them it shows me an error like this " E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
its killin me, please helpHi
The I/O device error occurs if drive has a problem with the disc or your system config (mainly a disc problem).
The DVD drive cant read all DVDs or just the burned DVDs?
Which burning software did you use?
As far as I know you should always closed the burning session.
Furthermore if you need the DVD Shrink software please check this links:

IMac 20 will not read DVD data disc
Today I tried to copy a DVD data disc and the iMac opened the finder Cue window to ask if I want to open the untitled CD. It was a DVD with 3+ GB of data. Funny, but the same disc opens on the PowerBook G4 17" just fine... has anyone else have this problem and have found a fix?
Thanks
GregIf the drive can read a movie DVD then the problem must be that the OS DVD is either dirty or badly scratched. Look at the shiny side. If it has finger prints clean it with a lint free cloth. If it has scratches you can call Apple for a replacement disc for a nominal charge.

hi all,
My problem is the dvd drive in my laptop. It will not read dvd's commercial or burnt variety, curiously it reads cd's just fine. So far email tech support has been useless. I wrote them explaining what steps I had tried to fix the problem such as uninstalling and reinstalling device drivers and they suggested that I try and reinstall device drivers. Do they even bother to read the emails you send or just guote out of some manual. System restore did not work either, but the drive is rarely used so the latest system restore points are probably useless wrt this problem. Returning the unit to factory state is simply not an option. The unit is still under warranty. Any other suggestions? I couldn't find any firmware updates. Other than this problem this system works flawlessly and has since I bought it.

Message Edited by SidSam on 05-30-2009 10:13 AMThe DVD's I assume are data as well as movie files? Do you have an app such as Intervideo, etc to play dvd's?
My usual steps include running a laser cleaning disk, remove/reinstall as you have done and maybe deleting upper & lower filters.Once done if it still doesn't work,it is declared dead.
I would request a replacement.Of course HP will likely first make you jump through the usual hoops which include a System Recovery back to factory configuration. This can be eased considerably by making a backup Image of your current setup to restore later.
A great free tool I have used a lot lately is Macrium. It works fast and will create & save the image to external USB HDD, CD/DVD,network drive, etc.
