`MS Office for Mac 2004

I'm a recent convert from WIN98 so I still have a lot to learn. I'm using 10.4.11 Tiger on an Alum iMac with Parallels and MS XP. I use MS Word 2002 on the XP side and NeoOffice on the OS X side. I am watching on eBay several offerings of the subject software. (I cannot afford the 2008 version.) I want to know if the 2004 edition will run seamlessly and trouble-free on Tiger and will I have to download anything from Apple or MS. Will this work well with the 2002 if I want to transfer, say, text files from one OS to the other? NeoOffice saves in MS Word 97/2000/XP. Is this going to be OK? The 2004 Word is going for really decent prices on eBay but even so I don't want to buy something that will be a problem. Thanks to all.

Office 2004 works just fine for me under 10.4.11. You'll want to download the latest updates (free) from MS - the AutoUpdate app that installs with Office can do that (Word's current version is 11.4.2).
I share docs back and forth routinely with my work PC (running XP, Word 2003 SP3).
Hope this helps...

I just upgraded my MAC from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I try to access my Microsoft Office for MAC (2004 edition) files I am getting a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I access all of my save Word documents?  I just want to be able to retrieve all of my documents that were in Microsoft Office for Mac (2004).  If I purchase the newest version of MS office for Mac from Apple will I be able to retrieve my old documents?

Use any number of free alternatives to your nearly decade old version of MS Office.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice (free)
    OpenOffice (free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for years. Life is better without Microsoft.

Does the Mountain Lion operating system run programs in the Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 software suite?

No, Snow Leopard (10.6) is the last version of OS X that supports Office 2004. You can upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011, or use a free office suite such as LibreOffice.

  • PC Micorsoft Office compatilbility w/ Microsoft Office for Mac 2004

My wife is considering purchasing a PC which will be compatible with the local community college prgrams, but our kids will use it and their school is Mac-based. The school uses Microsoft Office for Mac 2004.
My question is: Will the Microsoft Office that comes installed on the new PC be compatible with the Mac's version. In other words, will my kids be able to type, say, a paper in Word on the PC at home and then take it to school and be able to work on it on a Mac?
Thanks for any insight to this very basic question.

*"Then why did it happen so, that when I sent a .doc file to my coworkers (using PC's and Vista) that I had created with my Word (from Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 package) some of the pictures where not showing at all"*
You probably linked to the images, instead of embedding them in the document. Regardless, since Office is not an Apple product you'll probably want to post your question over on Microsoft's product forums for Mac: http://www.officeformac.com/productforums/

will microsoft office for mac 2004 transfer from my emac running 10.4.11 to the new iMac running mountain lion using migration assistant?

Microsoft Office 2004 will not work on any Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion. You will need to upgrade to Office 2011, buy the less expensive iWork apps from the App Store or use a free office clone like OpenOffice or NeoOffice.

Or you could just wipe out Lion and restalled Snow Leopard. Then when you are in the market for a new computer, desktop of notebook, buy something other then Apple.
why would you say things like that here? if you are a windows one then stay there. but you are not polite or helpful and if can't use Apple i wonder why you would come here to tell all about your sad story. I don't understand that it has nothing to do with question asked.
I own, or should I say have owned, several Apple products. Including a new MBP.
    I also use Windows.
I will say anything I like in an effort to help people overcome problems they are having with Mac's and computers in general.
Being a Apple Fanboy is not required for membership on this forum or trying to help other Mac users.
And just how is suggesting to remove Lion and to go back to Snow Leopard not helping the OP in his quest to make his already owned and paid for MS Office software work? If it is isn't broken stop trying to fix it. Snow Leopard is a fine OS. Lion is still in Beta, only Apple hasn't told anyone. And yes I run Lion on my new MBP but I also have a partition with Snow Leopard on it.
Thank you and have a great day.

  • Office for Mac 2004 update or docx converter download killed my Office?

On my work computer, an old desktop Mac, with 10.4.11, I download the docx converter today to open a docx attachment i had received in an email (a doc I expected, from a friend). After the converter downloaded, the email attachment opened fine, then the microsoft updater opened saying it needed to update the converter. I started it, but it looked like the same window as installing the converter, so i stopped the update. I then realized what it was trying to do and in the dock saw an icon for Microsoft Updater, opened it, and asked it to look for updates. It came up with 11.6 update. I downloaded that, when it finished, went to install and when it said it was installing 1039 items I thought that was crazy, not what I was looking for, so I stopped that as well. After that, I tried to open Word using the icon in my dock, nothing happened, same with Entourage and Excel, none of them worked. The icons are there, but you click on them and nothing happens. I searched in the Microsoft folder and all other files are there, border art, etc but in the Startup folder in Microsoft, the Word and Excel folders are empty, no .exe file or Icons. I thought it got screwed up with me stopping the update installs, so I reinstalled both updates, they installed fine, even the 11.6 Office update "found" the software it needed to update said it was successful, no errors in either install. I restarted the computer and still, nothing. I called Microsoft for Mac tech support, they did not know where they went, suggested I reinstall from the CD. Problem is, our CD drive doesn't work. And I understand I can't do a system restore because we have 10.4.11 and time machine (or whatever it is called) is avail in 10.5 on. I was wondering if I uninstall both updates, would I get the exe files back? I did a search of the whole computer for the files with tech support, they aren't there. I was thinking maybe something in the docx converter disabled the 2004 exe files because maybe it is for 2008 and so now the apps are looking for 2008 exe? I don't know, I'm no expert, just trying to figure out which thing screwed everything up and how to get it all back. Help!

Since our disk drive doesn't work, I was thinking of installing the software onto an external hard drive using another computer, and then plugging external hide drive into that computer and grabbing it from there, do you think I can install that way?
I do not think this would work with M$ Office. MS places the software all over the startup disk. You never know with M$ software, they avoid mac os conventions & invent their own.
There is a way of creating a virtual cd/dvd.
Here is what I tried for a music cd.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
file > new > disk image from folder
    navigate to the cd/dvd image
    !http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5047582739_743c03d611.jpg"!
    save as read-only:
This will create a dmg file. Place on attached external hd. To mount, double click on the dmg file.
You should be able to install as normal.

  • I have Mac 10.6.8 wih Office for Mac 2004. I tried to install Office 2011 but the computer rejects the disc. Please help.

    Mac OSX 10.6.8 2.66 GHz Intel Core Duo; Memory-2GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I  have been using Office 2004 for a long time, and about three years ago purchased the then new Office 2011 . I installed it but did not like it and removed it from my computer, Now I would like to install it--the computer rejects the disc. Is there anything I am doing wrong? How canI make it work.  Using spotlight, I did not find any traces of the old installation.  Thank you!

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
Visit www.mactopia.com where you can download the trial version of Office 2011. Install it then register it using your registration number that you have for the DVD.
It would be a good idea to uninstall Office 2004, but it shouldn't be necessary. You can dump the old Office 2004 folder in your Applications folder.

  • Office for Mac 2004

I don't know when this started happening, but when ever I shut down my MBP and turn it back on,
Excel 2004 launches all by itself. I always have to Force Quit in order to close the program. Any ideas on how to make this stop? I looked at Preferences, etc...but don't know where to start.
    Thanks for the help!

Is it listed under the login items in system prefernces --> accounts?
If it's not there, I would suggest reposting your question in the OS X forums or on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products as this forum is for troubleshooting compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows:

I had Cs2 and Office for Mac 2004 installed on an OS 10.6.3 system. Worked fine. This weekend my computer did an auto update to OS 10.6.8 and now I cannot save or print from any office or CS2 Apps. What happened. Office also freezes and I have to force quit. Any advise. System or Software problem?

Bad timing.  Reapply the security update:

What happened is that version 1.0 of the security update was available for a bit of time this weekend, and that disabled Rosetta.  Version 1.1 brought it back.

  • Pages won't open word documents created in Office for Mac

I'm using system 10.10 with the latest version of Pages. Although I've read that if you right click on a word document you should get the option to open it with Pages, and it should be translated. But I get a message that the document can not be opened. I created it with Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 using Word.
I've been able to email those documents to people who use PC's and they have always been able to open my documents, so why not Pages?

I tried that, but no luck. I also tried copying my Office for Mac 2004 onto my new iMac 12,2 but that didn't work. because those programs won't run in the Yosemite operating system. I see that there is supposed to be a new Office for Mac 2015 version, but nobody seems to know if or when that will be released. I may purchase Officer for Mac 2011, but before that purchase I thought I'd ask Microsoft if the 2011 version would open up Work files created by the 2004 edition. Their support line put me in touch with someone in India who tried to be helpful, but I'm not convinced he really knows the answer. He tried to persuade me to get Open Office, but that's not what I want. I'd like to be able to compose documents on the Mac platform and send them as attachments to emails for people who I know are using PCs. I don't like that extra step you have to do through in Pages to export as a PC document. The same for Excel and Power Point.

  • Cannot close "Help" in Office for Mac

I have Office for Mac 2004 and I have this problem whenever I try to use "Help". Once help is open, I can continue to navigate and edit the document and can find all the help topics easily enough. I cannot, however, seem to find a way to quit help when I am finished without closing the application altogether. The help window is anchored to the menu bar without any links or buttons to allow me to close the window. I've tried Command + Q, but that just asks if I want to quit the entire application. Any ideas on what is wrong and what I can do to fix it?

I do wish someone would answer this because it's been bugging me since I got my computer and installed Office 2004. Oddly, my wife and daughter, on their respective computers, running Office 2004, don't have the same problem; their help window behaves like any other window, with the command bar at the top with the little red dot to close the window etc.

  • Installed MS Office for Mac, after uninstalling test drive, still reg to TD

I installed MS Office for Mac 2004 this morning, after being very careful to uninstall the test drive version, after reading about problems it causes not to do so. I followed the instructions to uninstall, emptied the trash after, did the installation, updates, etc. But when I look at the "about" section of word, etc, it shows that the product is licensed to "Office 2004 Test Drive User". I did fill in the info on name, address, etc, and the "test version" watermarks that I was seeing on excel spreadsheets pre-installation are gone now. I have rebooted the machine. Do I need to register each application separately? Did I miss something in the uninstall?
Also, after installing the new Office, I had problems accessing the internet from accounts other than the one from which I'd done the installation. I asked about that in the internet related subforum here, thought I had it fixed, but it's been inconsistent, seems to work on-and-off in the different accounts. Did the accessing of the net during the course of the install knock something out of place?

I installed office after deleting test drive. Registration is fine. Microsoft creates a user pref folder for each user account. This will be activated with your individual pref. the first time you open one of the office programs. It will be different/reset for each user on the computer. So it is possible that different users would experience different problems connecting to the internet. I copied my users pref and library folder over from my powerbook to the imac and all of my settings seem to work just fine on the new imac.
My suggestion would be to uninstall all versions of office on your imac and then reinstall office 2004. Be sure to do this in an administrator account and to repair permissions before and after install.
    Good luck!

  • IMac Freezing & Microsoft Office for Mac

I took my 7 day old iMac back to the store I purchased from. After two days of solid testing, the techs there were unable to make my machine freeze or crash. This is after I experienced either a freeze or completely black screen/reboot every 2 to 5 minutes.
I brought the machine back to my office, fired it up and you guessed it...it froze. Here's the thing...the only software open was Microsoft's Entourage.
Yeah, I know...seems to go against all things good to have to load Microsoft products on a Mac, but my clients all use Office.
I uninstalled Entourage and so far so good...no crashing or freezing or black screens or anything.
I'm keeping a log of the software I have open for the next few days just in case the freezing happens again. That way, I'll know exactly what I have open at the time of the failure.
So I'm wondering if anyone else with a freezing iMac has Office 2004 loaded and could this perhaps be the culprit?

    Hi Bee,
Thanks for the welcome. My original post about my iMac problems are over in the Freezing iMac thread. After talking with AppleCare, I decided to take my new machine back to the store I bought it. They are what I think called a boutique Mac store. Anyway, they have a 7 day return policy...get all your money back.
I was so frustrated with the freezing, crashing, black screens, I went in with the intent of returning it for a refund. This small neighborhood store has been averaging selling 3 iMacs a week for since these Alum ones were released. Mine is the only one they have heard of with these issues. They were mystified and were really curious about this problem.
Anyway, I uninstalled the trial software before installing my copy of Microsoft Office. So even though your suggestion is very thoughtful and helpful, it doesn't apply to my machine.
I'm going to continue to monitor and record what I'm doing, although if I have many more unproductive days due to this machine, I will simply have to return it. As I've posted before, I'm self-employed...no workey, no eatey.
I was just wondering since Office for Mac 2004 was written as universal and not specifically for Intel Macs, could they be the culprit...although it looks like the problem people are having is pretty wide and so most likely the software is not the problem. Just trying to grasp for an answer...

  • Office for Mac Problems

I have Office for Mac 2004, which supposedly allows 3 installations, with 3 different Installation Key Numbers. I have installed it on 2 Macs, and all is fine until I try to use both computers at the same time. Then I get a message on the Mac on which I installed it second telling me that "a copy of this programme is already open", and if I want to continue I have to close down all the Office applications on the first machine! Very frustrating! I am almost certain I used a different installation Key for the two machines but cannot find the recoed of what Key number was used. If I look in "Properties" I see that the product ID numbers are the same until the last group of digits which are different on the two machines. How can I find which installation Key numbers I used on each machine, and is there any way I can get aouns this problem. I am nervous to unistall and reinstall in case I am then not allowed to reinstall with a previously used Key!?
    Thanks,
    Kendrew.
