MS-SQL Heterogeneous Connectivity setup.

The enviroment:
1)- Windows 2003. MS-SQL 2005. 64Bit AMD
2)- Linux x86_64 AMD. 10g.R2
Situation:
We need to stablish the Heterogeneous Services to synchronize data from MS-SQL 2005 to 10gR2.
Questions:
1) In case of Heterogeneous Services configuration. Can I install the service in the Linux Server? or I have to install a 10g database in the Winwdows Server?
2) What are my options?
3) I have problems in the pass with the AMD x86_64 with drivers, It is provided and any one have done it in this plataform in both windows and linux?

Heterogeneous services is not clear what product you want to use.
In general for a SQL Server connection we offer a GATEWAY and GENERIC CONNECTIVITY; both rely on HS.
Generic Connectivity (=HSODBC) wasn't available for 64bit Linux in 10g and the 10g gateway wasn't available for 64bit Linux nor 64bit Windows.
BUT....
Starting with 11g we now offer the follow up product of HSODBC which is called database gateway for ODBC. This DG4ODBC is now available for Linux x86 64bit and it is also certified with a Oracle 10g.
DG4ODBC requires a 3rd party 64bit ODBC driver and as it is a generic connectivity it only supports a limited functionality. The follow up product of TG4MSQL is now called in 11g DG4MSQL and now also available in 11g for Linux x86 64bit and certified with an 10g Oracle database.
Both 11g gateway require 10.2.0.3 patchset combined with a compatibility patch or 10.2.0.4 patchset applied.
So to answer your questions:
1) Install DG4ODBC or DG4MSQL V11 into a separate Oracle_Home directory on your Linux database server.
2) DG4ODBC or DG4MSQL.
DG4ODBC is from the Oracle point of view for free; DG4MSQL requires a license.
3) You might check out DataDirect or Openlink; they offer commercial 64bit ODBC drivers. If you use the gateway it comes with everything you need to establish the connection.

I read many topics in this forum relating to Heterogeneous Services (HS) but cannot find any documentation that details how to 'invoke' an HS connection through ODBC
We need simple connectivity to a SQL-Server DB so there is no need to install Transparent Gateway.
So, how do we invoke a "Heterogeneous Service" call from a SQL*Net script? Do we configure an ODBC connection to the SQL Server in the Win2k ODBC applet first? Then how do we make the 'call' to that ODBC connection?
We saw in some postings that the TNSNAMES & LISTENER files require some entries; what is the format for those entries?

You want to use Generic Connectivity to access SQL Server. This is documented in Chap 7 of the Heterogeneous Connectivity Administrator's Guide.

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Setup error: Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed

Hi,
Having this annoying error trying to install SQL Server 2014 (RTM). I saw it's been asked several times... But each post seems a different cause and no definitive answer...
I'm not doing an upgrade, so no "sa account" issue.
Tried different media. Even three different distributions: trial, Standard and Enterprise.
Tried disabling Microsoft antivirus/firewall.
Of course tried restarting, updating, installing, uninstalling, repairing, etc., etc.
I noticed the users folders under C:\Users weren't created. (Maybe something related to permissions?) After playing around, I managed for the users to be created and the service started. Though I couldn't log in.

Heterogeneous Connectivity to Mysql

Hi Fellows.
I need to connect to a Mysql Database online from Oracle 10G (Create a link) I read some article regarding Heterogeneous Connectivity to other non Oracle Databases without ODBC or DNS. Does anybody has deploy this Oracle feature???? Does Oracle 10G has another choice to connect to other relational databases............If somebody has information to connect to Mysql Database wil be great!!!!

I'm still really confused by why you're talking about DNS. DNS is just a mechanism for resolving host names into IP addresses and that happens only at connection time and only if you have specified a host name.
Yes, normally ODBC is not the most efficient API in the world-- it was designed as a least common denominator API and designed with SQL Server in mind. That said, if you want to use Heterogeneous Services, you would either need ODBC, OLE DB, or a Transparent Gateway. If you are under time constraints, I'm going to wager that you don't have the time and budget to go out an purchase a Transparent Gateway. So you'd either have to use ODBC or OLE DB. I do not know if there is a MySQL OLE DB provider that runs on SUSE-- I would tend to doubt it. Which leaves just ODBC, assuming you've got a MySQL ODBC driver that runs on SUSE.
Personally, I've used Generic Connectivity to connect to DB2 and SQL Server databases from an AIX box (using commercial ODBC drivers) and to Excel files from a Windows box. I've never personally connected to a MySQL database, though if you're talking about ODBC connections, it doesn't really matter what database you are connecting to.

Issue with SQL Developer connect to SQL server

I'm using "SQL Developer 2.1.1.64.45" to work on a migration project which needs to convert a SQL server database to a Oracle 11g database. But I got an issue when I setup the SQL server connection. The SQL Developer let me connect by selecting a SQL server database name (For example: Northwind), but once connected, it always connected to "master" database instead. The "SQL Developer" is running on Windows 7 Professional (x64) platform. My Oracle database is 11g, and SQL server database is SQL 2005. And my SQL server instance name is "SQL2005". Anyone have ever experienced this problem? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the feedback, lets stick with SQL Developer 3.
Correct me if I'm wrong,
You attempted to migrate from SQL Server to Oracle including target generation and datamove in one go, by filling in each step of the migration wizard to the end.
During the datamove you got
ORA-01000:maximum open cursor exceeded
So it looks like SQL Developer during the migration is not closing cursors fast enough and hits the maximum number of open cursors in your Oracle database.
I think the default max open cursors is 300 in Oracle.
There are a few things we can do here.
You should be able to see the new migration project in your Migration Projects navigator.
By navigating down the project tree to "Converted Database Objects" we can attempt the data move again by right clicking and choosing "Data Move".
But first I would restart SQL Developer so as to free up any lingering open cursors.
That may allow you to complete the data move, as the only cursors being open are being used in the data move and not some cursors which may have been left open from previous steps in the migration.
Now from my perspective I would like to identify where are we leaving open the cursors, so I'm going to setup some testcases my end to see if I can replicate.
From your perspective Id presume you just want to move on with the migration.
So if the above (shutdown and attempt just the data move) doesnt workyou could
A) Increase the MAX OPEN CURSORs on your Oracle databases so it complete the data move
or
B) Use the offline data move technique.
A) Increase MAX OPEN CURSORs

B) Offline Data Move
If you are moving large amounts of data (say > 1GB), then the standard data move (we call it online), which just uses JDBC to SELECT * FROM and INSERT INTO may not cut the mustard.
In this case you can try using our offline technique. SQL Developer will generate a set of scripts for you.
unload_script.bat will use SQL Servers BCP tool to dump out the table data into DAT files.
oracle_ctl.bat will load the data in the DAT files into Oracle.
As we know the names of all the tables, columns ,both SQL Server and Oracle, we can generate fairly good scripts.
The benefit of this technique is large amounts of data can be migrated and you get to use tools designed to dump data and load in data, so you have better error logging and tweaking.
To attempt this in the Migration Wizard , Data Move page, select offline.
If you can describe your database a bit (number of tables, number of procedures, amount of data to migrate) I may be able to define my testcase better so I can replicate the issue.

Heterogeneous Connectivity: Error when select data from table

Hi all,
I use Heterogeneous Connectivity in Oracle 10g Linux to connect SQL server Database. I use FeeTDS ODBC driver. After configuration, I create database link in Oracle, Database link is active.
But in SQLplus, I write: select * from all_catalog@DBL; It views all tables and views in sql server database.
When I write: select * from AA@DBL; It produce error:
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
[Generic Connectivity Using ODBC]Record AA has no fields. Loading failed
ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from DBL

Does AA exist, does not contain columns, describe the table please.
Maybe you should not try Select * from ,,,, rather Select specific fields.. Also if in the remote database, the field and tablename are written in lower case you may want to try
select "field_name" , from "aa" etc

a Oracle 7.1 client (including your example) will connect to an Oracle 8.1.5 server.
Is the server correctly configured (can a client connect from another machine)?
Tracing can be turned on in the client, server and/or listener to get further information.

First off, let me say that in the past (pre v9) when I've tried to use Windows logins with datasources, it never worked. But that doesn't mean that they finally got it working, just that I stopped trying.
What I was referring to in my post is that once you have CF installed, you need to go to the Windows Services screen, open each of the CF processes, click on the LOGIN tab, and change it from the default services login to be whatever WIndows login you have setup in Active Directory. Then restart CF so that it's process is now running under that login with its credentials. Then go to SQL Admin and setup that same login and give it access to the database you want to access. Then go to CF Datasource menu and setup the datasource as you did previously. If CF's support of Windows authentication for datasources does in fact now work, you should be in business.
If it doesn't work, then you'll need to do as I said earlier, and setup SQL logins for the CF servers to use, and then in the CF Datasource setup screens you would specify that login info in the same way that you would have given it the "sa" login info.

Heterogenous connection with dg4odbc Oracle 11g: insert did not work !

we just migrated to a 64bits version of our oracle 10.2.0.4 database.
We had a heterogenus connection who was woking "A1" at that time (in 32 bits). Now, we had some problems with the Odbc 64bits and we found on this site that we can use dg4odbc (Oracle 11g).
We tried it and it works well except for a case ... We have to refresh some Oracle tables using a Ingres database. We have a first script SQL that truncate a table and insert data from a table (using heterogenous connection) terminated by a commit. The second one do exactly the same thing but we use a PL/SQL anonymous block.
Does anybody know why the first script work and the second not ...

SQL Developer connection to TimesTen

Hi,
I am new to SQL Developer and TimesTen DB.
I am trying to connect to a TimesTen DB running on a Solaris x86 box using a SQL Developer running on a WinXP PC. Is this possible?
The TimesTen Release I am using is 7.0.5.0.0. The SQL Developer version I am using is 1.5.4
After installing the TimesTen Client libraries on the WinXP, I was able to get the TimesTen tab in SQL Developer.
On the server I can connect using "ttIsql" as follows:
./ttIsql -connStr dsn=cas
I am not sure what I need to enter into "New/Select Database Connection" pop-up menu. I entered a "Connection Name". I set the "DSN" to "User Specified" and the "Connection string" to "dsn=cas" but I cannot get the connection setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul,
In order to connect to a remote TimesTen database, you need to first create a client DSN. The client DSN should map to the DSN "cas" on your Solaris server. To create a client DSN on Windows, follow the step by step instructions listed in the section "Creating and configuring Client DSNs on Windows" of the [TimesTen In-Memory Database Operations Guide|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/timesten_doc.html]. Use ttIsql on Windows to verify that your client DSN is working, and can connect to your TimesTen database. In SQL Developer, you just need to select the same client DSN in the DSN drop down list.

SQL Server Connection over WAN Link

I am planning
to setup a BlackBerry server and connect to a remote SQL Server over a
WAN link with 150+ms ping time. Is there a known tolerance for
SQL server connection latency? For example, I have been told by
RIM that ping time for Exchange should be around 35ms so if it is
higher, a BES should be placed next to the Exchange server. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

There is no problem with slow connection :-)
You might get lots of waits in the SQL side (most likly there will be lots of
ASYNC_NETWORK_IO) which you can monitor using sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks and sys.dm_exec_requests. But if there is no disconnections then most small application will work OK

Before you run SQL Server 2008 express setup, make sure that you have installed Windows installer 4.5 and.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 manually. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.100).aspx. Moreover, please turn off all the third-party softwares which could prohibit the installation process.
According to your error message, the issue could be due to that your account has no rights to install SQL Server, or the corruption on the media.
Firstly, please ensure that your account has admin rights. Also make sure that you right-click the setup.exe and choose “Run as administrator” to complete the installation.
Secondly, please check if "msdbdata.mdf" file exists at d:\8268cd7b247d294de359c9\x86\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\Template. If it exists, please make sure that your account has read permission to the extracted
folder.
However, if the file doesn't exist in the extraction, the media could be corrupt. Please download the
media
again and check if the issue still occurs.

After patches applied on patch Tuesday the database reports the above error.
All accounts are domain accounts and SQLServer uses Windows auth.
DCDIAG show no errors
All servers and DC have been restarted,
Message in db log confirms the connection is being denied due to trust.
Event log shows same rejection
Protocols enabled: named pipes, tcpip, memory
TESTS:
PortQry: "
TCP port 1433 (ms-sql-s service): LISTENING"
Connect with domain admin accounts works from multiple clients systems to DB.
Cannot connect with newly created domain admin account
Can connect if new admin account connect to server in terminal server session and uses UDL wizard or any other tool including isql.
New standard user also fails to connect.
NOTES:
I removed the SSL patch and the IE security update to see if that was an issue.

I went back and found I had missed removing a patch. I missed the rollup for Windows Server 2003:

Checked the error code 242 "GW_TIMEOUT" and found:
Connection setup to the remote gateway has been closed because timeout has been exceeded.
The time limit can be set in parameter gw/timeout.
Changed parameter gw/timeout to value 10000, but still encounter same error message.

It seems to me that somewhere the domain is double used.
