Mshttpd runs but doesn't listen

The version info:
This is effectively a new installation. User accounts and mailstore were migrated from a previous system running 5.2hf1.21.
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 Patch 2 (built Jul 14 2004)

Some other config related info:
running Sun Cluster 3.1 and HAstoragePlus, ie no globally mounted filesystems. Also, I wanted the ability to bounce the ldap server independant of iMS, so the ldap resource is NOT listed as a dependancy of the ha-ims resource. (yeah, I know it's not what the "book" says. :-))
I'm running IMAPS and HTTPS using a cert signed by our own CA. This CA has signed certs for quite a few other products, including DS5p2 and they all work fine.
Now here's the problem. The mshttpd and imap daemons don't maintain the SSL listener. I have HTTPS running on port 444 (because its one more and a web server runs on the other half of the cluster). The imaps runs on the default, 993. The imap and http logs show no indication of it failing to start nor any other problem. I should add that it appears the SSL listener doesn't start, but the non-ssl listener works fine.
The odd part is that sometimes the SSL enabled daemons will start-up and run properly. We only have about 600 users. They currently use imap and I want to get them on imaps and/or https. Any ideas?
One more question. Is it possible to truss these processes? Currently, I can't because the HA agent effectively puts a trace on the process and truss comes back with an error. Any workaround to this?

I restarted the server, most recently, at 1:30pm Eastern.
I've configured service.http.sslport = 843 since 443 is already in use by other service.
A telnet to port 843 results in:
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
This has been a problem for two days. I've just started to configure the messaging server to use SSL.

Downloads such as adobe flash update won't download even when anti virus is disabled. The download box appears and runs but doesn't show anything.

Any updates or downloads won't download in Firefox. The download box appears, goes thru the motions but doesn't park anything in the file. I usually have to quite Mozilla, use Explorer for the download, such as Go to Meeting, or Adobe updates. Can't download anything with Firefox from your browser.

will not download or install, but will download and install for

Firefox says it is running but doesn't show up anywhere that it is?

I tried to start firefox (the newest version) in safe mode, but I accidentaly pushed the restart button instead of the start in safe mode button. After that, a loading bar appeared, and then we lost power before it could do whatever it was doing. After we got power back, I tried to start firefox again, but it keeps saying that it is running. I've already tried looking through the task manager, but firefox doesn't appear anywhere in it. I've also tried deleting the parent lock thing, but it still says that it's running. What can I do to fix it? I've got windows 7 if that helps.

You appear to have more than one profile already. Maybe these will turn out to belong to other users, or you have used Reset Firefox.
When looking for Firefox and trying to kill it with task manager, also look for plugincontainer that could also be running.
You have not said what your OS is. Possibly an upgrade is trying to complete and failing,no doubt it is possible to kill that but I am not sure how. (IIRC someone recently posted about how to do that in Windows 7 but I can not find that post, at present, and I do not know what your OS is)

Script runs, but doesn't produce unless user logged in

Here's a weird one, and I'm not sure which forum is proper for this. But since it deals with a powershell script, I gotta start somewhere.
I've a powershell script called sendmail.ps1 which I have configured to create and send an email to me when run. Works flawlessly. So I've set it up in task manager to run the script whenever a Windows backup fails. Works great, provided the administrator
is actually logged on to the server. I've set it up in task manager to run with the Administrator login, highest privileges, and hidden. Again, works great when the administrator is actually logged on to the server. (Server 2012R2). However, if the administrator
is not logged on it appears that no email is sent. The task still shows "completed successfully" in task manager, yet no email is received - therefore I assume it's not sent. I can find no errors in the event viewer (is there a specific container
in event viewer I need to check for this?) What do I need to do so the sendmail.ps1 script will actually send an email when the administrator is not logged on to the server?
Here's some things I've tried in various combinations.
- Task is configured/optimized for Server 2012R2 under the general tab.
- Have tried it both hidden and not hidden
- Hive tried it with the administrator account and the system account. Both work only when administrator is logged on.

Thanks for the feedback mjolinor. I've not downloaded the analyzer, because from reading the description for it, it appears I'd have to be logged on for it to be useful. Remember, the task words flawlessly if logged on, but not if logged off. So far, the
only thing I can get is output to a log file of:

From looking at it, the "error" is being generated by the very parameter that creates the log file - though the log file is successfully created. Weird.
With the "Start-Transcript" added, where does it capture the output to if the task runs while not logged on to the server computer? Or do I just add the path\filename as a parameter after Start-Transcript ?
This is truly perplexing to me, as it doesn't make any sense that it runs perfectly when the administrator is logged onto the server. But when not logged on and the task runs that executes the pwershell script, the task itself will show as executed successfully,
and I can't find any errors in the basic logs of the event viewer. Perhaps it's one of the other containers in event viewer where something is logged, but there's so many of them, I've not a clue which one. Right now, I'm working through each one at a time
to see if anything jumps out at me.
If you're interested, here's some additional background to explain why it has to run with the administrator logged off. This server runs a 3rd party practice management software program for a dental office. The program is poorly constructed, as it has "memory
leaks". This server has 32Gb of memory, and because of the memory leaks, it will run out of useable available memory about every 36-48 hours. So for this reason I've got a task set up to just reboot the server daily at 6am, one hour prior to employees
arriving for business. This ensures they start the day "fresh" and the server won't lock up on them during business hours. The business owner absolutely loves this program, and even after I explained the issue to him as best I could in a way I hope
he could understand, he's not changing software vendors. I've already notified the developer of this problem, and apparently they've been aware of the memory leak for years, and their solution is "reboot daily". All I can say about that is, they're
lucky they don't work for me.
So it's very likely that with daily reboots, this server could go for weeks without anyone logging on to it. Therefore, the powershell script needs to run weather the user is logged on or not. Else, backups could not occur for weeks and no one would ever
know it - until it's to late of course.

ITunes runs, but doesn't open.

I got a new iTouch today, and installed the latest version of iTunes so I could set it up. The install finished, but iTunes didn't open. I clicked on it from my desktop, and still nothing. I opened Task Manager, and it wasn't show in the Applications tab, but it was in the Processes tab. I ended it, and tried to run iTunes again but the same thing happened. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and still the same thing is happening. I don't know what to do anymore. I can't use the iPod if I can't get on iTunes.. it's just a paperweight. Does anyone have any idea?

C310 install runs but doesn't finish on Dell Inspiron w/ Windows 7, 64-bit

Whether I run the installation off the disk or a downloaded file, it progresses almost all the way to the end and then just closes. No files get installed.
The printer is installed on several other W7-64 bit PCs on this network. I tried the HNDU tool and it finds the printer, but says there are no drivers installed.

Thanks, I was hopeful, but I'm still in the same boat. If I felt comfortable that PSE8 would work on 64bt W7, I'd upgrade, but maybe it is time to look elsewhere for an editing program.

Disk Utility verify or repair permission runs but doesn't indicate anything

Recently I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions after a software upgrade and the utility ran and ran, but no permissions were repaired and the utility didn't stop running. After an hour, I stopped running repair permissions. Does this indicate something remiss about the utility? Or worse? What should I do about this?

You might want to boot from your OS installer disk and launch Disk Utility. Repair Disk from there.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

Sshd is running but doesn't seem to accept connections

I'm setting up a new machine which serves as a gateway for my private network. I have iptables set up and ip forwarding is working correctly. I can't seem to connect to this machine via ssh. This might be something I did incorrectly with my iptables rules, but I can't find the problem with them myself. Whether I try from inside or outside of my network, I get the error:

You're right, it is a slight risk. However, I need to be able to access this machine from anywhere, so I can't restrict sshd to a particular range of IP addresses. I've seen a way to set up sshd so that it will reject a certain IP address after so many failed login attempts. I'll probably use either that or port knocking eventually, but for now I at least have it set up and working properly. Thanks again

The title just about says it all, but I don't even get a window, why is this? If it's some exception then it's not displaying for me to diagnose. Some pointers in what might be wrong would be really appreciated here - I'm pretty new to Java 3D.

Its because your public void Test() should be public Test(). Its a constructor, not a method.

Siri hears me, but doesn't listen

90% of the time she starts calling someone. appointments don't work, temperature questions generally give the time or call someone.

According to your signature, you don't have Siri. Siri is only available in iPhone 4S and IOS 5.0.1. You do have Voice Memos (Voice commands)

When I click on a mailto: link, Thunderbird says it's already running but there is no Thunderbird process running.

I opened Firefox on a freshly rebooted PC, went to click on a mailto: link in a webpage and get the error message that Thunderbird is already running. Thunderbird is not running, but will not open for sending email.
The cause could have something to do with Firefox not opening Thunderbird correctly, or that Thunderbird is not getting the correct permissions to run properly when called by Firefox.
When I start Thunderbird from it's icon, I get a Windows 7 prompt asking me if I want to allow this program to make changes on my computer. If Thunderbird is started by Firefox asking it to create a mail message, as is the case with a mailto: link, It never gets this permission requester.
I have tried troubleshooting information regarding Thunderbird already running error messages, however, there are no .lock files associated with Thunderbird nor is it's ability to send/receive mail when run from it's own icon affected by this problem. I therefore think it's a problem with the way in which Firefox calls Thunderbird to create an email message.
There is the additional problem that Thunderbird has to have administrative privileges to run, but doesn't automatically get them. This might require a separate bug report submission be generated to the Thunderbird developers to fix this problem, but is dependent on what they can do about that.

The reason firefox is not able to launch thunderbirds is because it cannot start thunderbird as administrator unless firefox is running as administrator, try to start firefox as administrator user then click the link.
It should work.

V6.01, Windows 7, click on icon, "firefox is already running but not responding" Task manager doesn't know about it. I can't quit it or get it to load. Brand new install. What to do?

Brand new Lenovo computer, Windows 7 Home. New install of Firefox 6.0.1, set as default browser, don't launch when I click done. Icon appears in tray. I click the icon, and a message says "firefox is running but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing process, or reboot". It's not obviously running. I can't find a way to make it quit. Task manager doesn't list it as a current application. Uninstall using the control panel uninstall function and then reinstalling gives the same message. Rebooting doesn't fix the problem and gives the same message. Firefox had been working until I tried to update my bookmarks.

No can do. I can delete the current profile and install Firefox, which should create a new blank profile. The message still says "Firefox is already running." I can place my old profile in the proper folder, and Firefox will still be already running. I can't actually use Firefox, because even though the message says it is running, there is nothing on the screen I can access.
After uninstalling Firefox, deleting the two items left in the Programs folder, and deleting the profile again, it still didn't work. I then got frisky and from the Roaming folder I deleted the Mozilla folder which contains the Firefox folder which contains the now empty Profiles folder. That worked, and a new set of folders with a new blank profile were created. So apparently it was the empty folders that never got deleted that were causing the issue.

Update firefox, it asked me to update flash, I tried to update flash but it said I had to close firefox. A box came up and said the Flash install would continue when I closed firefox. I closed all firefox windows and no update of flash occurred. I tried relaunching firefox but got the "Doesn't start when starting as administrator. Error Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." message. I rebooted the system, no improvement. I tried to run firefox as administrator and got the same message. Either I find a fix or I won't be able to use firefox and will have to go back to ie.
