MSI K8N Neo DOT screws up MSI 5900XT

Greeings,
I've asked this question in the motherboard section...now I'd like to try the graphics card section to see if anyone can explain some odd behavior I've seen with the following combo:
MSI K8N Neo Plat
with
MSI 5900XT
Normally, I run the 5900XT with manual overclock:
390/700 --> 490/780.
Since the increase in GPU is higher than the increase in memory,
I prefer manual overclock to DOT on the graphics card.
Anyway, 490/780 is rock solid...sometimes even up to 510/820 is,
but I keep it at 490...
Anyway, that's all well and good, but recently I've tried using
the motherboard's DOT feature to bump up CPU and memory speed
(but which should leave video card performance unaffected, right??)
When I apply a tiny 3% DOT (again, this is on the motherboard,
so I'm not DOT-ing the 5900XT card...), suddenly the video card
will crash (or freeze for 10 seconds and then run very slowly, an
indication that it entered throttle safe mode).  This is really strange.
To investigate, I did the following experiment with aquamark3:
a) no overclocking anywhere: score of about 37500
b) same as (a) but set moboard HTT/FSB from 200 to 206: 37610
Seems reasonable to get just a slight speedup, since this step
doesn't boost video card performance, which is presumably the
    limiting factor.
c) same as (a) but use 3% DOT on the moboard. This has the effect
of boosting the HTT/FSB from 200 to 206, which of course should
yield about the same performance as (b). But I get about 40000 (!)
This experiment indicates that a little 3% DOT on the motherboard has
the effect of also (drastically) overclocking the video card (and to
make it stranger, the video card overclock is far more than 3%...we're
talking 3000 aquamarks which is more like a 9% graphics card overclock!!)
That's probably why a little motherboard DOT combined with
my usual 490/780 5900XT overclock froze up the video card and causes
it to enter safe mode.
BUT the question is: WHY should motherboard DOT be overclocking
the graphics card in the first place?  Has anyone else seen this?  Is it
intentional?

Using RivaTuner, which plots video card GPU and mem mhz in real time, I'm able to absolutely confirm that turning on either 1% or 3% DOT on the motherboard (k8n) has the effect of dramatically overclocking the video card (a 5900xt)
Strangely enough, the overclock of video card overclocks the GPU mhz but leaves the video card mem speed unchanged. Again, I'm using RivaTuner to make these claims.
I've tried with BIOS 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4b2
Examples:
gfx card set to defaults (390/700). moboard set to 1% DOT.
RivaTuner shows that aquamark3 starts at 390/700 for a few moments, then it jumps up to 429/700. Should have stayed at 390/700.
example 2: 400/700...actually runs at 441/700 (again, a 10% GPU overclock)
weird example 3: 405/700...stays at 405/700 (no GPU overclock)
example 4 (the killer): 410/700...aquamark3 freezes at frame 873 (graphics card goes into throttle mode). What does RivaTuner show?
It shows the graphics card running at 526.5, which is waaaaay over spec and is over a 28% overclock beyond what I asked for! (which was 410)
And where does the 28% come from?  At least in previous runs it was either 0 or 10%, which at least I could plan around if it was consistent...but 28%?!
Bottom line: MSI K8n neo plat motherboard DOT (even at just 1% DOT) has a nasty side effect of also overclocking the GPU core. This is bad, but could be worked around if the amount was consistent. Unfortunately, the amount isn't consistent (usually 10%, but sometimes 0 or even 28%)
I'm not sure if MSI is doing this to look good in anandtech/tomshardware benchmarks, or if it's a real bug...

  • MSI k8n neo (s754)

This weird, i've enabled dynamic overclocking and chosen "Captain" .. isnt this suppposed to increase the FSB? .. it's still 200 ..
    msi k8n neo s754
    a64 3200+

    heya
the Dynamic Overlocking Technology is designed to overclock the cpu/fsb bus to cope with an increased load
i'm not sure what each of the "ranks" percentages are but
    i think "commander" is 11%
therefore, when the cpu is under 100% load, DOT will increase ur FSB(HTT) by 11% to try n finish the job a little faster, i wouldnt recommend using DOT as it can be unstable for this reason
if ur running PC3200/DDR400 ram in ur pc at normal timings and have it set at Auto or 200 in bios, so its running 1:1 with HTT....if u use DOT, the memory will be overclocked as well to keep in sync with FSB(HTT).. now this will introduce new problems cos some DDR400 doesnt like being overclocked and will cause systems to hang or crash....i experimented tightening my RAM timings and cos its cheapo RAM i didnt get very far, too many applications were crashing
so i guess what i'm trying to say is, if u want to experiment with overclocking, i would highly recommend using the Cell Menu in the BIOS, its alot more friendly than just setting DOT to commander.
i loosened the timings on my RAM...and got it to DDR460 running in Sync with the HTT bus
and the bios is more fun to experiment with
i hope i didnt drone on too much
Good luck with what u decide on doing

  • Strange Temp Jumps on MSI K8N Neo-FSR

    Hi!
    I got a MSI K8N Neo-FSR.
My temp in speedfan jumps from 36 to 42 just like that then back to 36.
It's pretty disturbing to see that.. And I wounder does someone else have the same problem? Then I don't know how accurate the new BIOS for this mb is. On the Abit I hade before the temp was 34 idle.. Today I allso bend the small metal pice that you screw in on the Zalman ALCU cpu cooler so it would fit and press harder, then the temp sank from 42 to 36 idle. And the CoreCenter shows a temp on 44 now and speedfan 36 but jumps to 40-42 just for a second.
Anyone know what the problam can be? It's kinda anyoing when you OC some because you don't know the right temp.

You should try and update your bios , speedfan and core center showed different temperatures for me too until i updated my bios. On the other hand i have a different problem, that is: when i start my pc(cold start) my idle temperature is 40 degrees but if i restart it drops to 30, does someone have any clue why?

  • Unable to install windows XP på MSI K8N NEO

    Hi!
I have problems installing windows XP (SP1) with MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition. After I bootet my computer (I build it myself) I noticed I had extrem cpu temperatures (65-70 degrees celcius). A quick search on the net indicated that a bios-upgrade might solve the problem, as my current bios probably showed too high temperatures.
As I had already installed windows XP i downloaded the bios and upgraded using the msi-windows-bios program. And, after the reboot my cpu temerature was 20 degrees lower (45 degrees celcius), which is more normal. But during the bootup of windows I got a blue-screen (or, actully a blue blink, just for a nano-second), and then my computer rebooted.
As the system were fairly new and didn't contain any importaint data, I decided to try to make a fresh install of winXP. But now I get a blue-screen during the installation, when the progress-bar says "installing devices", the blue screen appears when it is about 75%.
The installation of XP went fine before the bios upgrade, and I used XP for several hours without any problems at all - except the high cpu temperatur. Now my cpu temeperatur is acceptable, but XP wont install/boot.
I have tried to disable all the integraded devices (such as firewire, network, sound card etc) in the bios menu, but the XP install still provides a bluescreen during the installation of devices.
    My system:
    A64 3000+
1024Mb RAM (corsair value, I believe)
    Samsung SATA 160Gb HD
Matrox Millenium G400 (I know it is old)
    NEC 2510 DVD Burner
As I said, this is propably caused by the new bios, as it did work with the old one. I have also tried "Load failsafe defaults". Do you guys have any ideas of how to fix this?  Should I (can I) downgrade my bios (I do not have a floppy drive in the computer).
    .wirrum

    Hi wirrum,
I see you are Swedish (the på was a give away).
I recently aquired a MSI K8N Neo2 from Komplett - where did you get yours from? maybe that have a bad batch because I am seeing the same problems as you.
I have two different problems , the same stability problems you are seeing and problems with the keyboard (ps2) not always starting up. I'm currently at Bios V1 and after seeing your problems I might just wait with V1.1 unless everything else fails.
Im considering an RMA to komplett soon and asking them for a motherboard that works (maybe from another manufacterer).
I have a decent PSU (Antec Truepower 480) and DDR400  from Kingston thats on their reccommended list, no overclocking, stable settings, I built the thing with ESD protection and carefully. Not overly impressed right now.
Some suggestions - turn off AGP Fastwrite, turn on SATA DMA access if you are using SATA. Turn off any Overclocking, move your memory around , try just one stick in DIMM 1 see if that helps.
I finally managed to get through an XP install but it took 6 hours to install. And it will occasionally stutter then shutdown entirely.
      Quality..

--Quick Guide for flashing BIOS, provided by MSI--
    1. Create a MS-DOS boot diskette, then copy the the .exe and the bios file to the floppy disk. Both of these files can be found in the package you downloaded.
    2. Press "Delete" and go to BIOS setup while computer bootup.
Check BIOS advanced features and see if BIOS flash write control is enabled
(This option must be enabled. If you can not find this setting, it means the BIOS can be
    flashed.)
    3. Boot from MS-DOS boot diskette and get a:\> prompt.
    4. Type "", then press ENTER
    5. The flash program will then ask "Do you want to save BIOS?", please press "N" for no. The when you see Press 'Y' to program or 'N' to Exit, please press "Y" to continue.
    6. After flashing complete, remove floppy and reset the system .
    7. Press DELETE or F1 when prompted at first reboot after flashing.
    8. Load BIOS optimized defaults, then save settings and exits.
    Drivers & Needed Files:
(Note: All these drivers are for Windows XP.)
Leaked Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 4.40
(Please use at your own risk, these are LEAKED drivers. Password for the .zip file is "ocworkbench rules". Also, you will need to rename the WinXP_2K folder in IDE to either WinXP or Win2K else the installer doesn't pick it up.) Thanks for the link Wonkanoby!
*NEW* Leaked Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 5.03
More leaked drivers? Seems some parts of the drivers are older and some are newer.
    1. Windows XP Service Pack 1A (Web Install) -or- Windows XP Service Pack 1A (Full Install)
    2. Microsoft DirectX 9.0b (Web Install) -or- Microsoft DirectX 9.0b (Full Install)
    3. Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 4.24
    4. AMD Athlon 64 Processor Driver Version 1.1.0.14
    5. Nvidia Video Card Driver Version 56.72 -or- Omega Nvidia Video Card Driver Version v1.5303
(The Omega drivers are third party drivers optimized for gaming, most prefer these over the standard Nvidia drivers.)
    5. ATI Video Card Driver Version 4.7 -or- Omega ATI Video Card Driver Version 2.5.51
(The Omega drivers are third party drivers optimized for gaming, most prefer these over the standard ATI drivers.)
    6. Onboard Sound Driver (Realtek AC'97 Audio Codec) Version A3.61
It is HIGHLY reccomended that you install the drivers/needed files in the order listed above. Please note that there are two #5's because you either install one or the other depending on your video card, do not install both of them.
You will come across a problem here though. You can't install the chipset drivers without installing the Windows service pack and DirectX first, but the Windows service pack and DirectX installs need the internet to download files and you won't have working internet until you install the chipset drivers. Here's what I did to get around this. Instead of downloading the web install versions of Windows service pack and DirectX, download the full version and and put them along with all the other drivers on a backup hard drive or burn them to a CD, this way you will have all the drivers you need when it's time to install them and none of them will require the internet to download files.
Another note when installing drivers. Apparently the Nvidia chipset drivers also come with drivers for the onboard sound, but people seem to agree that the Realtek onboard sound drivers are better. When you are installing the Nvidia chipset drivers, just be sure to uncheck the box for sound drivers when it asks you which drivers you would like to install. Now you can safely install the Realtek drivers without any chance of conflicting sound drivers. Thanks for the tip Wonkanoby!

oh.  IIRC the installer just says USB 2.0 will be fully functional after SP1 is installed.  So after you install SP1 you go into device manager and u click update driver and it will auto search and update the driver.
Simplicity-wise, i guess its pretty much equal.  It might take less preparation to just copy DX9 full onto a CD and install that first, then nforce driver, then right away you have yoru internet connection.
but i dunno.. i guess i will try it your way this time when my RMA"d board comes.
i will be fomratting and doing a fresh install later on today and will let you know if i come across any problems

  • Looking for MSI K8N Neo 'Spare part'

I have an MSI K8N Neo-FSR that I recently bought from Newegg.
Awesome board, very happy with it so far, BUT....it didn't come with the back plate! You know, the part that fits over the ports - USB, PS/2, serial, parallel, etc - that mounts to the PC's chasis?
    Missing!
If anyone has a spare one that would fit a K8N Neo-FSR, I'd really appreciate them getting in touch with me! Email addy is in profile!

You can e-mail MSI Customer Service and ask them for one and they will more than likely send it to you. I bought a refurbished MSI motherboard last year and when I asked them for an I/O Shield, they asked if there was anything else I needed for my motherboard. They shipped it UPS and I got it in a couple of days (no charge to me). They're pretty good about standing behind thier stuff, so it's worth a shot.

Try raising RAM voltage to 2.7v - 2.8v.
    If no go - Run Memtest86 http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
If no go -  Try onboard Audio ( disable / remove Audigy2 )

    OK,

Also, is 48 degrees normal for idle temp on CPU AMD 64 3400? 36 degrees NB temp ok?

    Cds on IDE 2 shared.
let me know what you think.
The other related posts I read, people were using raid or multiple OS.  I'm not.

I had the same issues as you sometimes Windows would install and sometimes it wouldn't the problem was related to ram. I had my ram in slots one and two like you did and I moved the ram to slots 1 and 3 and now the machine is rock solid stable.
I think most of the problems people are having are actually more ram related than anything else.
So try moving the stick of ram you have in slot 2 to slot 3 and see if this solves your problem. This solution is on forums somewhere I am just not sure where.
    Take care,

  • MSI K8n Neo Platinum

    Hi Guys,
I am having a problem with my computer at the moment. I am having trouble getting into the BIOS of this motherboard (MSI K8N Neo Platinum). When I try to get into BIOS, it goes into a black screen with a little line on top of it and its blinking. This has never happened before. Then when I shut off my computer since I couldn't get into the bios, I turned it back on and it goes on but nothing goes to screen or it wont boot up to startup screen. Then I turn it off, I reset the BIOS and turn it back on. Now it boots up to the startup screen, but when it says press del to get into bios, I pressed that and it happens again, it will not get into bios. When I do this over again by resetting the bios, this time without getting into BIOS, it goes on and boots up to Windows XP. I want to reformat my hard drive with a fresh copy of XP Pro, but I can't get into BIOS to do that. Can someone help me?

Same thing happened to me today. Thanks MSI for publishing a Betaversion of a BIOSupgrade on the Live update..
At first I figured that there must have been some fault during the BIOSflash so I downloaded the file again and repeated procedure. This time it worked like a charm and I could do all my BIOS-settings. The next restart the problem was back again though, and this time I had swapped the order for my SATA-drives to boot (to the way they should) but the system couldn't boot. So I couldn't enter neither the bios or Windows. Luckily you can shift the primary boot device by pressing F11 though, so I got out of the libido...
Now I've downloaded the old 1.9 Version instead and I sure as h*** won't do any more beta-testing for MSI by using the Live Update anymore!

  • MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition memory question

    Hi there,
I've currently got a MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition (Nforce 3) motherboard and 2X 512 MB Corsair Value Select memory modules (both double sided) running at DDR 400 - this runs completely stable and has done for a number of months. I would like to increase my memory to 1.5 Gig but there seems to be a lot of issues?
I originally planned to buy an additional 512 Meg Corsair value select chip and place it in Bank 3 - is this acceptable?
I assue that i would have to drop the speed down to DDR 333 from 400, could anyone tell me how much of a difference this actually makes (when playing FPS games Doom3 etc..) ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i've been looking through both this forum and the Corsair one and i cant seem to find the answer.
    thanks in advance !

Just note that there are combinations of two sticks that will also make the board run in DDR333 mode (see page 2-8 of the manual). For example, using two double-sided sticks in DIMM2 and DIMM3. I've actually managed to get it to work at DDR400 in those two slots, but it's not perfectly stable and overclocking diminishes drastically. Bottom line is the system will work fine when forced to DDR333...as long as you don't expect to overclock the RAM to any significant degree.

I have built 2 computers exactly the same.

    8og sata maxtor
    amd 64 3200
    128mb ati 9800 pro
    asus cd drive
When i tried to install windows xp pro on both the machines i got the same error. could not copy file. On each try the file was a different one. After hours of trying new things i found that putting the memory in slot 2 on the motherboard  solved the problem, windows installed and booted up as norm. When i moved the memory back to slot 1 the computer would not boot.
I have now left the memory in slot 2 but the computer will still crash every hour.
I am sure this is something to do with the memory but not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.

but still same error, i aint no expert so i might have missed something in bios or something :(
please help me if you can..

Flashing bios with memory errors is a veeeeery bad idea .
Almost guarantied to ruin your bios chip with bad data block.
That this even is suggested with mem errors , well .
You need to resolve the mem errors before doing anything else.
The windows xp install routine is a very heavy user of cpu and memory
and will fail if you have mem errors like you have.
Some things to try is entering bios and change auto settings on cpu voltage
giving it 0.5v more than default .
Set the memorys voltage to vendors max approved voltage
    which for yours is 2.6v +/- 0.1v . So it's safe to set at 2.7v .
    Set timings to cas 3 ,ras 3 ,trp 3 , tras 8 , CMD 2T.
Pushing it firmly down in the dimm socket , sometimes it's not all the way down there even if the plastic lockers snap in.
Disconnect all devices not needed for a windows install ,things can be added later.
Have only the hd that os is to be installed to , one cdrom , floppy , memory and
    gfx card .
Disconnect USB case front connector (cause corruption and strange faults if
    USBOC pin is connected)

  • Help with MSI K8N Neo Platinum

HELP please- motherboard MSI K8N Neo PLATINUM: I tried to take away the backplate for the heatsink (on the back side of MB) in order to install the zalman HS beafore i read the forum (use a fan...) and the worst of all happend:
I scratched the back surface!! the scratches are minor, that is 4 scratches half a milimeter long each and not deep but i can see the copper of some lines leading from the memory slots to the processr. My question is : can I try and build the computer on that motherboard anyway or better buy a new one? is there a risk of dammaging other components? oh god what a mistake!

Make sure the new backplate is non-conductive. The backplate for the Hyper 6 has a non-conductive sticker on it. Make sure to keep it on if youve got one... If the lines are exposed even with the back-plate on perhaps you should cover them with some non-conductive (100% non conductive!) tape or something.
Then it doesnt matter if they are exposed, as long as they are ok.
A good tip, which got when i was removing my backplate, is to use a blow dryer to heat it up and the remove it with your fingers. That way youll also notice if it gets to hot
The glue gets sticky at blow drier temps. And pls, dont singe the MB with your blow dryer, you only have to make it hot, and if you cant touch it, how can you remove it with your fingers?
I guess theres no way of telling if you have a serious prob and no way to tell if your cpu will be ok. I guess you could (?) try and start it wíthout anything (cpu, mems) but a PSU, and then, if it (and maybe the PSU) goes "!Pfsssssss!"  or "bang!", youll now you will have to replace it.
I put a screwdriver through an asus board once, and it still worked...

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum Query

ALoha folks, having osme problems with my board ( think i may have damaged it but wanna be sure).
I got a VAPo XE and when i went to install it i realised that the back plate was in the way. Went ok, came on here, found the sugestions on removing it (hair dryer) and removed it succesfully by pulling it up with a pair of pliers.
Installed Vapo etc, chucked in ram, cpu and gfx card.
When i turn it on i get a beeep and inothin happens. No image to the monitor at all. I attached the d-bracket to check the led code and it seems to stop at inializing keyboard.
What i've tried so far is a second gfx card and moving the memory to different dimms (aint tried me other stick of memory yet.).
What exactly is "initlializing keyboard", is it what i think it is (ie keyboard :p )
What else can i do before i just go and buy a new mobo?
    Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have Both the ATX Wires on.. theres the Big one! (21Pins i think).. and the Small 4Pin Connector both need to be connected.. if you havent done so yet.. Another thing you could do is Take everything out and place it on a cardboard or something appropriate for the mobo.... I think your motherboard is shorting?.. if it's touching your case.. I had somewhat the same issue long time ago.. give it a try..if you want hope it helps..
