Multi-comp setup. New laptop kicks

I have a Linksys Router(WRT110) hardwired to my main computer(desktop) with the extra antennae setup on my step-dads desktop in another room. These have worked fine, I have an iPod Touch and it's connected as well with no problems. Sister has a Dell laptop running Vista and is fine with connection. Within the last 2 weeks I purchased an HP Pavillion running Win 7. When I turn on my laptop and the wireless activates it kicks my sister off and I lose the router on main comp. I've had the map open when I've turned on my laptop and the connection from hardwired computer to router goes offline followed by the internet connection. When I'm alone and nobody else is on comps I can connect with little problems. I've set the wireless properties of my laptop to work with my routers security. Is it just that there are too many computers or should this be working? If too many comps, any systems recommended for handling 2desks/2laps and an iPod?
Thank you

It's not too many computers.  Try using DHCP Reservation to ensure you're computers are not attempting to share the same IP address.

"how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop?"
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

"When i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs"
When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Need help transferring itunes library from old computer to new laptop

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new laptop and am having trouble getting my library to transfer to my new laptop, i followed this step by step process http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US and in the end ended up with no music on my ipod and no music in the itunes library on my new computer...
So then i went into Itunes on the new computer and clicked import library under File, so i found the Music folder that i had transferred over and it imported the music but all my playlist were not there, just songs. So i ended up syncing my ipod back to my old computer so i would get all the songs and playlist back on as it was originally before this whole process...
My desktop runs XP while my new laptop runs Vista Ultimate w/ SP1 home edition, dont know if this matters...
So not sure where i should go from here, i have already Authorized my laptop with the itunes store , i was thinking of uninstalling Itunes on my laptop and starting over from scratch, will this help?
BTW when i did the original transfer i used my Ipod as the hard drive as it had plenty of storage room left on it, i do have access to a 250GB external HD i was thinking of using that and trying that to transfer the library...
So if anyone can tell me how to transfer my Itunes library from old comp to new laptop it would be greatly appreciated...

The method you used should work if followed exactly.
The key points are - is your music all together? It must all be in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder.
When you copy the iTunes folder to the iPod you get the library database with your playlists and the iTunes Music folder containing the music files.
Since you had trouble doing this with the iPod, why not try copying your iTunes folder to the external drive.
The method is identical the one for the iPod except you leave out the iPod specific stuff.
You install iTunes on the new PC, then you drag the newly created iTunes folder out the Music folder to the desktop, then you copy the iTunes folder from the EHD into Music, replacing the one you dragged out.
When you have done that, you need to check that your account has full control of your iTunes folder - Vista is fussy about that - you will not be able to edit track info if you don't have full control.

  • Need to sync iPhone 4 to new laptop; don't want to setup as a new iPhone, want to keep current settings

My previous Dell laptop is crashing and I have purchased a new HP g4 laptop.
I own a 160GB iPod, iPhone 4, and 32gb iPad. I am less concerned about the iPod because that is just my music.
    My problem is:
How can I sync my iPhone 4 & 1st gen iPad to my new laptop without having to set it up as a new iPhone/iPad? I want to keep all my current settings as well as my groups of apps.
    Any advice?
When I setup iTunes on the new computer, I had backed up all the music and iTunes folder to my external hard drive them copied from there to the new laptop. This process did not copy over my playlists (like I was told it would). iTunes is basically setup new and does not recognize that it is just on a different computer.
I set my iPod to sync and it said "was synced with other library...erase & sync?" I said yes, because it's just music. I imported each playlist 1 by 1.
Any help is appreciated; I really do not want to have to re-setup both iPhone & iPad.
    Thanks you,
    lavoie25

Thank you for the advice. I had done the backup of the whole library folder to iTunes, but I did not know I had to hold SHIFT down when opening it. I had already synced the iPod when I posted the previous message.
I ended up trying a few steps that seemed to work out in my favor.
When the iPad & iPhone were connected to iTunes, I first right clicked and chose to transfer purchases from the device to iTunes (I was not prompted by the "already associated with a library" message). Once that finished, I right clicked on the device again and chose to Back Up the device (again, not promted). Once the back up was complete, I went to each device and rechose my music, apps, movies, tv shows, books, photos and then clicked to sync. I was prompted here that the device would be erased first. I was then prompted asking if I wanted to Merge Information - I chose to merge and the sync continued.
Once the siny was finished it was as if I had finished a sync with my old laptop; all my settings and everything were in place - did not have to re-enter passwords in apps or set up mail settings again.
This worked on both my iPad and my iPhone.

  • How do I setup AirPlay in iTunes on my new laptop?

I had my laptop stolen which had about 40 albums saved on Itunes along with Airplay which streamed music to my Denon player.
I now have a new laptop with Itunes installed.  How do I get my Airplay setup again on the new laptop.???

Check out this Apple article -> Using AirPlay
Enabling AirPlay from iTunes on your computer
To stream music or videos from your computer to an Apple TV or AirPort Express:
Connect your computer and Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
    Open iTunes (10.2 or later).
Locate and click the icon in the bottom-right corner of the iTunes application.
Select your Apple TV, AirPort Express, or AirPlay-enabled speakers or receivers from the list of available devices that appears, and begin playback.
Note: The images of a TV screen or speaker next to each AirPlay device in the AirPlay menu indicate the type of media content you can stream to that device.
Do you see the Denon when you click the AirPlay icon in the lower right corner of iTunes?

  • I back up my iphone onto itunes on my laptop. I've now got a new laptop, which counts at two locations. This new laptop had to be setup again. Apple says this is three locations. How can I get it changed to two locations?

I backup my iphone onto itunes on my laptop. Recently I got a new laptop, so that counts at two itunes locations.
Unfortunately this new laptop was faulty and had to be set up again from scratch.
Apple now says that's three itunes locations when in fact it's two.
How can I get this changed back to two locations?

If by locations you mean "authorized computers" then one of your computers (apparently the new laptop) may be using multiple authorizations.

I have been using Sync plugin with my Firefox 3.6 installation. Now I am moving to a new laptop with Firefox 4. How do I import the synced entries from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4?

    Hi!
You have 2 options. If you decide to use Firefox Sync to do it, follow the instructions described here: [[How to sync Firefox settings between computers]]
The other option is to do it manually. To do so, you need to migrate the profile. Follow this steps: [[Backing up your information]]

  • How to setup new notebook from HP laptop with bad hard drive

Got kids a new Hp laptop in June.  The hard drive has been getting progressively louder and is obviously about to go, with a blue screen error forcing a roll back of the computer.  I have done a full backup to an external hard drive and I am returning this for a replacement.  Should I make a recovery disc and reinstall from the disc when I get the new laptop, or should I just plug in the external hard drive and transfer the files over?  A guy at work says using the recovery disc is the way to go, because it would reinstall Norton and all the other programs we have installed., but I thought the external hard drive backup was supposed to be the way to do this
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Not sure I understand the question. "Should I make a recovery disc and reinstall from the disc when I get the new laptop, or should I just plug in the external hard drive and transfer the files over?" Usually HP replaces only the hdd.
If you are receiving a new hdd to put it the laptop, yes you need to burn the Recovery Disks to reinstall Windows & original software on it. You can then use your backup to restore files.
IF the full backup you are referring to is a complete System Image, it can be used to restore Windows, programs and all files, etc on the new hdd. You do need to also burn the Repair CD to boot from and restore the System Image on the new hdd.(I would still burn a Recovery DVD set to have as a fallback)
If you are receiving an entire laptop replacement it will have everything installed on it. You will just have to restore your personal files from the backup

  • Transfering songs to myold comp.to my new laptop

I was wondering if anyone knew how to get songs from itunes on my old computer to my new laptop. I authorized the new itunes, i just don't know how to get my music on there. Thanks

I have a problem where I have over 500 songs on my ipod and the only songs that itunes would authorize onto their music catalog were the ones that were purchased from itunes. I don't know why that is but it certainly seems fishy to me. Is there anyone available with an idea or better yet an answer. thanks in advance Mike.
    P.S. - I don't know if my Iphone is a OS 3.1.2

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • I have an iPod Touch on IOS 5.1.1 - I uploaded its music library to my new laptop, using Tunejack. However, I now cannot download music from my laptop to the iPod (but can download to my iPad2 and iPhone 4S). I have gone under 'music' tab. Any ideas?

I have got an iPod Touch on IOS 5.1.1, which contained my music library, including uploaded CDs and purchases. I have a new laptop (using Windows 7) and upIoaded my music library from the iPod, using Tunejack, onto the laptop. I then made a few purchases but these weren't showing up on my iPod, so in frustration, thinking this would rectify the problem, I then re-booted the iPod, with the result that my entire music library disappeared from it.  I then went to sync with my lap top and went in under the 'Music' tab and clicked on download 'entire music library' but nothing happens. I have also tried 'selected playlists, artists, albums and genres' but this has not worked as well. The same issue dows not apply with eitehr my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4S.  As mentioned, this music library did come from my iPod so there is no space issue. If anyone has any suggestions i would be grateful.

    Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
