Multi language web site

Multi language web site
What is the best way to have my web site switchable (initially from links on the main index.html page) between different languages?
Do I simply clone the English version (including all the sub-directories and structure) into a sub-directory and translate each page and put a link on the main index.html page to a translated copy of the index.html page in the German sub-directory
That would mean I effectively have two websites to maintain.
More when it is translated into more languages.
Currently all the English pages are made from a template (dwt file)
I assume this adds a level of complication to the design.
Or is there a better/easier way?
thanks

This is a website that the client did not continue with http://ncca.com.au/new/, hence it has not been finished.
In the top right hand corner are two flags, Dutch and English. By clicking on a flag, the language session variable is changed. This session variable is used througout the website to determine the content as in
if ($_SESSION['lang'] == 'en') {include("home_en.php");}
if ($_SESSION['lang'] == 'nl') {include("home_nl.php");}
If there are more languages it is better to use the select switch rather than an if statement.

I am building a site for a client that will ultimately be
used for a few of their international subsidiaries. What are my
options for translating a site into a language in which I have no
    knowledge (e.g. French, Afrikaans)?
    Thanks much,

Hire two native speakers of that language. The first does the
translation. The second checks the first's work. Allot plenty
    of time to
go over the work of both people in order to resolve disputes
    in the
    translations.
I am serious. It's the only way. I worked on a project in
    five
languages, one of them Japanese, and the translation and
    checking
consumed quite a bit of time. But we wanted to do it right.
If you live near a college or university, that could be a
    good source
    for translators.

  • Multi-language Help in a multi-language web app

    Hello!
I had posted this on the RH HTML forum but removed that and
posted here for a wider audience...
***Please note: this question is not specific to RH but is
applicable now that RH 7 is unicode enabled. If you have experience
that does not relate to RH, please share anyway!
Once I have developed WebHelp (for example) in multiple
languages, how do I connect the help files to the web application
that the help is about? How does the correct language output get
displayed? For example, the application (that the help documents)
changes its interface based on browser language. Can the
appropriate help content be displayed based on browser language?
How is multi-language help generally implemented for an end user?
And, equally important, how does context-sensitive help
    (mapping) work with multiple languages?
I have never been involved in a multi-language development
effort and so I have no experience to relate this to. Any guidance
    will be greatly (and gratefully
    ) appreciated!
    Kathy

That's how our developers do it, but I just want to throw in
one other detail. The help output for each language has to be in a
separate directory. So if you have 5 languages, you'll have 5
directories. It's up to the developers to code the app so it
detects the browser language, then looks in the appropriate help
directory when the user clicks your help link or icon.

  • Multi-language CF sites

    Hello~
I was just wondering if anyone has suggestions for building out large-scale sites in multiple languages. I have look at the Google Translation API, but I'm not sure if it will do the trick or not. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
    KC

My suggestion is to first find a good translations service.  The hardest part of any multi-national site is
making sure your translations are correct.  Otherwise you end up with the chinese lawn mower manual effect.
You get:  "Important: To sever limb - Insert here." [there was a picture of a bloody detached limb next to an arrow pointing to the bottom of a picture of the lawn mower.]
Yes this did get the point across but a simple "CAUTION: Keep hands and feet away from the bottom of the mower while in use." would have been better and less morbid.
That was from an actual manual I once had.
Just check out Engrish.com to get an idea of how bad it can get.  Tracking your translations is important but if they are not correct in the first place then at best you end up on someone elses Engrish.com style site, at worst you loose all of your customers because they think your product will bring their dead ancestors back to life.

  • Testing on Multi-language Web Dynpro program

    Dear all,
I am trying to create a new translation for my web dynpro program with no luck, checked with the document many times and find no idea what's goind wrong...
Here my last finding, please let me know anythings I can check:
    1) I tried to add a new xlf for _en and this work
    2) After I switch the language, I find that the text "row x of y" in the table control changed to the language I specific, but the label still using the one in *_en.xlf
    3) I also tried to use the application property to specific the sap.locale, but point 2 still happen
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
You can get the user's locale like this:
    IWDClientUser clientUser = WDClientUser.forceLoggedInClientUser();
    Locale userLocale = clientUser.getLocale();
Afterwards you can use the Locale's methods getCountry() and getLanguage().
One thing you have to remember is reloading your WebDynpro project after adding a new language for a xlf file. Rebuilding is not enough, you have to reload your WebDynpro project (right click on the project folder in the WebDynpro Explorer and choose "Reload" in the context menu. Only then will all the property files for the corresponding xlf files generated.

  • Web Page Composer Multi Language Content

    Hi,
can the content of WPC pages language-dependant?
What is the strategy for multi-languages web sites with WPC?
I have the request of a customer who wants to display WPC content on pages dependant on the language selected by user personalization
    #Thanks hs

    Hi Holger,
I worked with WPC and don't find any difficulties. I had requirements create multilanguages interface for portal (English and Russian). Use WPC you can create multilanguages pages. First of all you create page in English, then translate it and publish. When you change language in personalization (for example from English to Russian) russian pages (which I translate in WPC) pull in Portal automatic.

  • Firefox 5 some web sites fonts are not work.

I try to visit this sinhala language web site using Firefox 5 latest version. Then that site not properly display (Fonts are not work). Then i again downloaded that web site fonts and install them. But again that web site not properly display.
If i visit that web site using "Google Chrome" or "IE" i can view that web site properly. This problem only happen for Firefox 5. Older version Firefox 4 work properly with this site.
This is that web site fonts download link -http://www.lankaenews.com/font/sinhala_tamil_fonts.zip

You can set the pref gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled to false on the about:config page to disable downloadable fonts and make Firefox use a locally installed font.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • Bengali font on Indian web sites

I'm trying to find out how I can get indian language web sites to show up in Safari? They are in the language Bengali. I've tried downloading multiple Bengali fonts but none of them seemed to work. Some of the web sites in question are:
    http://www.bartamanpatrika.com/index.htm
    http://www.anandabazar.com/

You would have no problem with web sites that use the international Unicode standard UTF-8 encoding for Bengali. A font for those can be found here:
    http://www.ekushey.org/projects/osx/
Unfortunately the sites you mention use old Windows-only dynamic font technology. You might be able to view them if you can find copies of their special fonts to download and install and try various browsers using "user-defined" encoding.
For bartamanpatrika, the name of the font is "Aaadurga".
For anandabazar, the name of the font is "aabpbengali".
Sometimes pages like this offer the required fonts for downloading, but I haven't found it in these cases. It may be that some other non-Unicode Bengali font could be used as well -- you would just have to search for them and experiment.

how in dw cs6 i can design/develop a multilanguage web-site, eg 3 languages european... what code pattern to use? required server side language or plain html5/css3/js/jQyery web-pages can be done?

Multi-langauge sites are best served with a content management system ( cms ) with custom text written for each language.  A CMS will most likely be written in a dynamic language (PHP/ASP) and use a database.

  • How to create a multi-language site?

    Hi,
what's the smartest way to create a multi-language site with the naviation menus only in English OR French OR German…? By creating one site and duplicate the .muse file?
    Thanks a lot!

    No
Depending on how simple your site is you can get away with it easy with common languages based on latin all in CSS and Javascript as the words within the sentences will mostly be in the same places. For other languages such as Japanese to English or right to left languages you would be better building different templates in a subdirectory as links and other things will start to move around.
You also have to design around multi languages as well, as words in other languages might be longer and could break your design.

  • Web Site Display Language - Allowing the user to chose the language

I have created a web site that allows the user to display the page in the language of the users choice.
Windows Internet Explorer and FireFox both allow the user to select a language option, and the web page will display the text in that language.
Safari on the Mac does not allow the display to be changed.
I have used the System Preferences - International option to select the language that I would like to use. The operating system menus and other options display as expected.
    Safari does not.

I have created a web site that allows the user to display the page in the language of the users choice.
    What is the website?

  • Does WEB UI Supports multi-language?

    Hello Experts,
    Does WEB UI supports multi-language?
If yes, what are the languages does it support?
If yes, what are the settings involved to support multi-language?
Thanks in advance & appreciate your replies.
    Rohan

    Rohan,
German is "easy", lol..  SAP supports German out of the box lol... Seriously though the general procedure is to install the approriate language packs for the system and then login into the system under that particular language using the webUI.
If your system is unicode(hopefully) so, then you will have no issues.  Keep in mind you'll need to translate any custom texts into the approriate language, but that is not too hard.  I haven't done it myself, but translation in SAP is relatively straightforward.
Pretty straightforward especially for the languages you mentioned.
    Take care,
    Stephen

  • Multi language website without a database?

I would like to make a website in norwegian and english (perhaps also in spanish).
I use DW5 but I don't have much experience with databases (so I don't use this in this case).
Are there any way to make multi language site - without make a copy of the whole site and correct it? Of course I will have to change the text in the webpages, but I'm more thinking of the dwt-(template-files) and css-files...Not making new dwt and css file but keep them, and correct text pages.
Could I use some kind of script?
Is this this enough information to understand what I want to do?
    Hope for the best
    Morten

    Hi
Yes, there is enough information to say that there is no 'magic' script that will do what you wish and that the way you describe, (create separate pages for each language) is the only way to do this if you do not wish to use a database.
You could use Google's translate to do the translation when the specific language is selected, but in my experience the translations are only usable as an approximation, and definitely should not be used on a professional web site as the actual content.
