Multi-touch unintentional clicks in 10.6.7

My wife's Multi-touch pad seems to behave as if it is stuck in "click" mode, constantly selecting text and dragging objects so as to make the trackpad completely unusable.     This only started to happen over the past few days, and she cannot remember if it was before or after a recent software update this week.  She is currently at 10.6.7, which I believe came out several weeks ago.   I have seen this problem described elsewhere, and a fix was issued here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4321  ...but 10.6.5 was supposed to have included the fix.
We have plugged in a mouse as a workaround but she is about to go out of town and needs to get work done on a long flight where a plug in mouse doesn't really cut it, so any suggestions to fix it would be greatly appreciated.   Disable one finger dragging is already clicked, by the way.

sig - I don't understand your comment.    The trackpad is what is broken.
Linc - So she is at the airport now and her laptop all of a sudden won't charge, so that could very well be it.   Thanks for the link, Linc.   Sounds like it's time for a trip to the Apple Store - She is flying to Seattle so I made an appointment at the genius bar for when she lands.

  • Multi-Touch Right click feature on 1st Gen. MBP

I have a 1,1 MBP, and the new ones are pretty cool, but not awesome enough to convince me to buy a new one. However, the right click feature on the multi-touch pads are amazing. I'm wondering if any one has figured out how to get it to work on an older Pro.
The only reason why I think that it's possible is that the track-pad of the older mbp does recognize when there are two fingers present and allows you to scroll up down left right etc. Why would it not be coupled with a click to allow for a right click function?
    Anyway, thanks for your time.

It's true that the first 15" MBPs did not support two-finger taps (although my 1st gen 17" did). I thought that had been fixed in a software update. So, when you look in System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Trackpad tab, there's no option for "Tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click"? (Clicking has to be enabled for that, else the option is place 2 fingers on pad and click button). There should be!
There was a hack released just after the 17" came out to get that functionality onto the 15" MBPs at the time, you can check it out here:

  • How to click on Multi-touch Trackpad

Please excuse my ignorance, I have an early macbook with a button to click.
I am trying to assist my brother with a project using his newer macbook with a multi-touch glass trackpad and I messed up the settings because I am not used to the touch to click. I unchecked that option in system preferences and now cannot click anything. Meaning, I am stuck on the system preferences page and cannot do anything because I do not know how to click without a "click" button.
Please, if you can, get back to me ASAP.
    Thanks.

Thanks Chris. I am in the process of getting a usb mouse to change back the preference as that is the only way I can get it back to working status, as per applecare. Thanks again bro.

  • Multi-Touch Trackpad in Windows 7 Pro x64

    Macbook Pro Unibody
    OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard)
    Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    Bootcamp 2.1
    Trackpad Update 1.1
Just upgraded my Boot Camp partition from Win XP x32 to Win 7 x64. Or rather, I did a clean install, not an upgrade. I'm running all of the above listed stuff. Muti-Touch isn't working on the tack pad, so I don't have RMB functionality and I'm really missing two finger scrolling.
Also, looking in the Boot Camp Control Panel, I don't appear to have any trackpad options, even after installing the trackpad update. I just tried installing it again, and I get a message saying that it won't update my drivers for the tackpad because what I'm trying to install isn't better than what I already have. That's all well and good, but the pad still isn't working with multi-touch.
Any helpful suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I didn't do anything proactive to get it to work, just the things I mentioned above. Installed Boot Camp 2.1, installed the Trackpad 1.1 update, uninstalled Boot Camp 2.1, Installed Boot Camp 3.0. Side scrolling just started working.
The only thing that's a tad finicky is multi-touch RMB. It works, more or less, but, for example, if I RMB on a bookmark in Firefox to access it's properties (let's say I want to rename it), I have to hold my two fingers down in the click position as as I move the cursor into the conext menu. Otherwise it will launch the bookmarked page. So you can't just two-finger-click on something to evoke a context menu, let go, then use one finger to navigate to the option you want, which is how I would expect it to work.

  • W510 Multi Touch Display Driver NOT installing properly on a fresh Windows 7 Professional Image.

Hello everyone, this is my first post here and I will make it as short as possible. First, thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and helping me out in any way possible.
I have a fairly new W510 machine with a crucial 256GB SSD in it. My SSD crapped out (luckily I had a back up) crucial sent me a new one and I just imaged the new drive a couple of days ago with my backup (The backup is made from the original Lenovo install). However during the imaging some Windows components were damaged for some reason (perhaps due to the previous drive crapping out). The only fix was to go ahead and use the retail windows 7 Pro DVD to "repair" the windows installation by clicking the "upgrade" button after inserting the disk. --As Microsoft suggested this to fix an existing win 7 installation. After I did that EVERYTHING worked flawlessly! I was really happy with the machine, it booted in 30 seconds and what not. However, the multi touch driver for my W510 screen will not stick ... no matter how many times I install it, as soon as I "log out" of the machine, the driver rolls back to a normal pointing device and multi touch is disabled and my on-screen keyboard vanishes. It is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Here is exactly what I'm doing.
1 - Log into my Admin user account
    2 - Install this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74908
3 - Multi Touch works great!
4 - Logoff or Lock machine or put it to sleep.
5 - Log back in my admin user account
6 - Touch screen works but all multi touch features are now disabled (As in no pan/scroll no pinch to zoom no nothing) the touch screen simply works as a simple mouse (point and click).
7 - Install the driver again (mentioned in step 2) --Again everything works great.
    8 - Repeated 3 to 7 ... Forever …
I tried completely removing the driver and re-installing it from scratch, I tried getting the raw ISD-V4 (W510's screen driver) directly from Wacom (works too) but again the minute I Logoff or lock that machine, the driver just rolls back or goes back to a normal pointing device. It is really weird that this is happening. The touch screen always worked well and I never had any problems with it. Also in device manager nothing has changed, it seems that everything is in good shape there.
    My W510 specs:
    - Intel Core i7 Extreme X920
    - 16.0 GB DDR3 RAM (G-Skill)
    - 256 GB Crucial M4 SSD
    - No GOBI 2000 Card.
    - Intel WiMax Installed and Enabled.
    - CD-ROM Drive in UltraBay
    - Cam / Fingerprint Reader / Color Sensor / Smartcard Reader / Expansion all installed
    - Windows 7 Professional SP1
It seems that Windows is somehow defaulting to a different "driver" that is over-riding the multi-touch driver I download and install when I log off. Do I need to install the driver outside my user account? Or is there a method to erase the default drivers or something? I am trying to avoid re-imaging this machine from scratch using the provided Lenovo Windows Partition. I just have too much development software on it, some of which will take me forever to re-install and re-configure.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Al.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Multi touch pinching, panning and rotating working, but no tapping!

    Hi,
I have installed today PS CC 2014, the Adobe team done a great job, multi touch is great, big buttons is great on my Vaio 13, and all is nice.
But guess what, I can't click (Single regular tap) with touch, I only can do it with a mouse or pen.
Now, I'm happy to hear the news and went ahead and ordered a 23 inch touchscreen from Acer, that touch screen doesn't support pen input, so I would love to have my single touch tap enabled on it.
Any ideas what to do about single touch tap, or dragging the brush to draw?

I'm just curios if there's the option available now or not yet.
I'm not sure what's the benefits behind multi touch without being able to do a single touch or tap.
Not all tablets or touchscreens do actually have a pen.

  • HT3986 Apple multi touch trackpad  problems on Windows 7 64 bit bootcamp

After installing Windows 7 on Mac Pro (2011) double tap gesture on Apple mult touch tackpad does not work . Any ideas ?

Yes I did that but although the trackpad worked it did not respond to the  tap rather than left clicking  - After posting the query I discovered, following a search of how to switch operating systems, that 'Control Panel/Bootcamp'  revealed adjustments that can be made to the trackpad & it now works - Thanks for you help anyway.

  • Warning message about a multi-touch device

It's just two weeks old. Whenever I boot up, there's a warning in the Event Viewer as follows:
"A multi-touch device reported inconsistent contact information."
    The Event ID is 264.
Does this mean that the screen is defective? I've googled but can't find any solution. If the problem is not solved can I claim  for a replacement under warranty?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to use the multi-touch trackpad to adjust icon size?

    After I upgrade my OS X 10.6 to 10.9.2, I lost.
Everyday I search the forum to look for the "feeling" of using Mac OS (migrate from windows to OS X10.6). The OS X 10.6 is just great.
Now the questions, how to use the multi-touch trackpad to adjust icon size with simple pinch open or close gesture?
    Thank you.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and don't speak for "Apple Inc."
Using the multi-touch trackpad to 'zoom' in or out is temporary.
The best way to permanently change icon size on the Desktop is to Command+click on an empty place on the Desktop screen and select Icon Size from the Desktop preference pane:

  • Multi-Touch not functioning properly

I have had my iPod Touch 3rd Gen (32gb) for 8 months, but the following problem started to occur at 6 months.
The touch screen won't register 2 points of contact at once. Pinching and zooming etc. is fine, but specifically in apps such as Tap Tap Revenge 3, when 'Two taps at once' appear, neither of them register and they just miss.
This is not just a problem with Tap Tap, as I have other apps requiring 2 points of contact at once which have the same problem.
Last month I visited a Apple Genius who did not have any experience with Tap Tap at all, and called someone else out to test my Multi-Touch. That person played with one hand, meaning that their finger was not touching the screen at exactly the same time as the other finger.
I was sent home unsatisfied with no resolution and was told that i have another 6 months of warranty remaining so if any other major problems occur, I would have that insurance.
Anyone else with this problem and if applicable has Apple offered a resolution?
    Many Thanks

    Hi @atu567
I understand that your touchscreen no longer responds properly after a windows update. I am happy to help you.
The quickest thing to try would be to try to do a system restore to before the update and see if that resolves the problem. If it does then the culprit is a compatibility issue of some sort with that update.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
If it is that update then you may want to prevent it from installing again, depending on what that update is supposed to fix or address. If you wish to do that then look at this page from Microsoft.
Turn automatic updating on or off
    I hope that this helps.

  • Why can't I scroll / Multi-touch with my new Magic Mouse?

I just got my first magic mouse and paired it with my 2008 model white macbook. It works as a mouse, but none of the multi-touch functionality is working. Here's the details
    - I updated to lion recently, and i want to take advantage of the gesture technology. but my macbook is *PRE MULTI-TOUCH* so the track pad does none of those cool tricks.  I thought that using the magic mouse I could use all those nifty features....
    - I read on another forum that people were having trouble with USB OverdriveX, which I've used for a while.  I removed the software with AppCleaner, which is supposed to clean out the plists and everything, and I restarted, but nothing's changed.
    - I downloaded MagicPrefs, and although it shows me the magic mouse details screen, messing with the settings doesn't change anything, i still can't even scroll. Also i set the menu icon to show me the remaining battery life of my device, and instead of that it is grayed out. Does this mean it doesn't recognize my mouse?
    - Finally, and this is what's most frustrating me: Everywhere I look I see the magic mouse preferance pane and it looks NOTHING like mine.  I don't have a 'magic mouse' preference pane in my system preferences, and when i click on 'mouse' all i get is this:
I haven't come across anyone else with this problem, and I get the feeling that this might once again be a failure of my aging machine.  But every other element of mac software is running, and the mouse recognizes movement, left click, and right click.  Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

I can't be sure it hasn't gotten mucked up with all those other steps you took, but here's what I know.
The Magic Mouse has some gestures, yes, but not all those found in a multi-touch trackpad. You can get a Magic Trackpad for that if you really want it all to work just the same.
However, to fix your issue, try uninstalling third-party mouse drivers (such as Logitech or Microsoft), USB Overdrive, BetterTouchTool, Jitouch, and/or drivers for other input-managing devices. Not getting the Magic Mouse preferences is usually the result of some third-party driver getting in the way. AppCleaner is a good way to do this, but you might want to search google for instructions specific to whatever drivers you may have installed and now want to remove.
Once you think you've got them all cleaned out, open bluetooth preferences and remove your Magic Mouse. Now re-add it and see if you get the Magic Mouse preferences screens that you've been seeing online.
    Hopefully this has fixed it.
If so, I will add that I have greatly expanded my Magic Mouse capabilities with Better Touch Tool and never had the kinds of issues you're having now. If you do get the Magic Mouse set up correctly, do not fear to install Better Touch Tool after the fact. I know from experience it will not cause such havoc!

  • Multi touch In iPhoto

So I have a brand new 17" and multi touch works in preview and scrolling trough web pages and navigation but for some reason NO multi touch options work in iPhoto. I just made the switch from PC to Mac so I feel completely ignorant for asking this but I have no idea how to fix it. Help? Thanks!
    Ian

    Ian,
Multi-touch works in iPhoto. Set iPhoto to open photos in "full screen edit" mode when you double-click them. Double-click an image. Now, use 3 fingers to "swipe" to the next or previous photo. Use 2 fingers to "pinch and zoom." It works.

  • Can't use multi-touch in macbook air on windows 7

i just install windows 7 via bootcamp and install the bootcamp windows support.
everythng seems fine, but the trackpad....
I can use scroll up and down, but i can't tap to click..
and i can't find the bootcamp in windows 7 start manual.
    anyone can help me?

A Chrome extension is out which enable Bootcampers to swipe back/forth with two fingers for pages. You can get it here:
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mgegfjnccpnkdppohmfgnjalkediapkc
    Or search for it yourself:
    Swipe Gesture
    In google addon store.
All credits goes to antimatter15.com for creating this. It's still at an early stage, but very useful indeed. And as seeing that swiping back/forth is one of the most used multi touch features (at least to my experience) this addon is a godsend. Also has no problem with people running virtual machines, as the addon can simply be turned off.
