Multiclip dilemma

I am working on a concert movie shot 35 years ago and never completed.  My media files are digital transfers of old 16mm BW reels that contain all the footage from the three camera shoot. Each reel is one large file. The reels were not very well catalogued and the various film clips are all over the map. Shots of a scene from one camera are often followed by the same scene from a different camera. A real dogs breakfast. After much work I have managed to separate and sync the clips to the sound track.
I now have a mess of clips on three video tracks (that represent the three cameras) that I would like to make into three angle multiclips, one for each song. The clips often come fom one or two large files. Here is a screen shot of one song. (ignore the selected gap)
My problem is that I would like to fill the gap at the start of each track with black(slug?) to maintain sync and I'm not sure how to do that. When I add a slug and try to make a multiclip with all the clips, I get some pretty weird sync things happening. Nesting the clips seemed to be the answer but FCP will not make a multiclip with nested sequences. I want to make some new clips that look like this:
and that have all the clips in them still synced up. How do I make one clip from a bunch of clips and gaps (spaces)?

Harri P wrote:
I just read up on exporting the clips in each track as a QT movie and re-importing. I can see how this might work for me but man, is there no way to just add those slugs and make a new clip.
Not so far as I've been able to see... I often have to do just what you're proposing (for event footage with timecode breaks) and what gets the job done most quickly is to lay the cams up vertically and sync them leaving gaps, then add slugs ant output each cam in turn by just turning off all but one video layer.
If there's a bright spot, it's that all multiclip sync is a snap and that you can play with different cuts easily.

  • Final Cut and Multiclips

    Hello,
I'm having a couple interesting issues with FCP 6 and was hoping someone might have a solution. I am working on a video project shot to P2 cards, and brought the media in through the "Log and Transfer" feature. The footage is multicam, so I am having to multiclip everything.
My first problem is that once I multiclip, I cannot change any information in the name of the multiclip OR the markers w/in the clip. Once I try adding markers, they disappear as soon as I toggle angles. Does anyone know why this is?
My workaround for this has been to place the markers on one cam, gang both and place the markers on the second cam... THEN multiclip. However, this is where my second dilemma comes in. For several clips this was working fine, but now I am getting a repeated issue where once I multiclip the cams, one of the cams markers move from their original location, and there's nothing I can do to move them back b/c of the first issue.... very annoying.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

In my test, a marker placed in the master multiclip disappears when switching angles, and seems to disappear even when switching back to the original angle where the marker was placed. This my be intended to allow you to mark angles indvidually, but doesn't seem to be effective either way.
However you might try this method instead: I found that a marker would persist on all angles if I:
Edit the mutliclip into the timeline
select the multiclip and add a marker in the timeline.
re-open this instance of the multiclip into the viewer - you should see the marker on all angles.
Hope this helps for you - I tested on FCP 5.1.4

  • Multiclip - mutliple audio tracks

This question has been asked before, but I'll reiterate it. If the support doesn't exist, hopefully apple dev will take it into consideration.
I shoot a lot of weddings and events. FCP's 5.0.x multiclip feature has been a lifesaver. I know the short answer to the following question is "get a mixer and do it in the field right the first time," which I'm working on. BUT, in the meanwhile...
Setup: 3-camera live shoots. We run three different mics: one cam has a wireless lapel mic on the groom; another has a wireless with a directional mic placed at readers' podium/spot; last is an on-camera mic.
Throughout the event the different mics are better for different sound: lapel mic for vows, directional mic for speakers, on-camera mic for organ and songs.
My FCP workflow so far has been this (and it could be the problem): export audio to .aiff, tweak it in STP, bring back into FCP, and link it with clip.
Here's the issue (finally!): Whenever I make these clips a "multiclip," the audio tracks (six in this case) are all automatically mixed together into two tracks in the multi-clip. All my hard work tweaking sound in STP is lost. (Again, might be a workflow issue.)
Does anyone know how to import the audio tracks, while still linked to the video, into a multiclip (and avoid manual synching in FCP timeline)?
I know one solution is to bring the separate audio files in and synch them manually in the timeline. But here's hoping someone can suggest something a bit less time-consuming...
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the audio is set up with six total audio tracks (two per video feed). I'm viewing the clips with "Video & Audio" selected as you described.
I'm synching clips I've cleaned up in STP manually ... but that's not the issue.
    Here's the issue:
    Pre multiclip files:
    V1 - A1, A2
    V2 - A3, A4
    V3 - A5, A6
    --->convert to multiclip<---
    Post multiclip files:
Viewer Window: V1, V2, V3 in multiclip config
Timeline Video: whichever angle I select
    *Timeline Audio* - A1*, A2*
Going to item properties for the audio tracks shows that A1* is comprised of A1, A3, A5 and A2* is comprised of A2, A4, A6. All the original audio tracks are there in the new multclip audio, just mixed together.
I want to know if there's a way to separate those audio tracks in the timeline on the mutliclip. I'd like to work with the separate tracks for the best sound rather than the "mixed" audio that multiclip seems to do automatically.

  • Creating a multiclip sequence, HERE'S A REAL STUMPER for all you Pros...

    Ok,
this one is a real doozy. We've tried everything we can think of.
Workflow: Three HDX-900 cameras, jam-synced to clocktime and shooting a sports event at 30p (59.94fps) DVCProHD. Recording onto FireStore-100s and backing up onto DVCProHD tape. Dumping firestore DVCProHD footage directly into FCS2. Everything looks and sounds great. We labeled each angle field in FCP according to the camera (A, B, C). We carefully labelled the reel numbers according to our project (P1031308A0101).
I selected the 3 bins (each bin holds the footage from each camera) and made a multiclip sequence. It was UNABLE to make a 60 minute multiclip with the footage from the three cameras spread out according to their timecode. It kept trying to make about 30 multiclips, few of them with overlapping timecode. a couple of the clips did sync together into a 3 camera segment, but most of them failed to find each other. We played with the overlap slider and all of the settings in the multiclip window, and at various points FCP tried to offer us 4 or even 5 camera angles of footage, all from our three angles, each with its own embedded and (seemingly) functional TC. It would NOT simply do the obvious-- take the free-run timecode and arrange each clip along a linear timeline within that timeframe and multiclip them together to form a three-angle view of the sports event.
    Why not?????
Now, one issue we have with this workflow is that the FS-100 drives are unfortunately FAT32, meaning every 2.2 minutes (2 gigs) the FS-100 automatically cuts the footage into 2 gig chunks. but in a regular non-multiclip sequence, this split-up doesn't seem to affect the footage, or timecode at all, and the first frame of the new clip is one TC frame after the last frame of the previous clip, the way it is supposed to. I don't know if this is relevant.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant: We have been shooting in 59.94 fps, 30p, and we have been using the 60@30 method of viewing TC in the viewer and the project settings.
I am thinking that if there was a way to take all my 2.2 minute clips and put them together into a giant master clip (without exporting and losing quality) then my simplified work environment would allow for a working multiclip.
There are three of us in the edit room and we have been trying to multiclip this stuff for hours. We need this solved today. Is there anyone who has an idea? I think we've tried everything obvious. Our computer is a new MacPro with 4gb RAM, capturing onto an eSATA hard drive

    Kevan,
    Thanks for the hey hey.
    TonyTony,
I have lots and lots of 2 minute clips. But we finally figured it out. It's a failing of FCP's multiclip feature to recognize segmented files that originated on a FAT32 drive. Basically, you simply can't, as of FCS2, make multiclips from several files that were automatically split into 2gig segments, even if their timecodes were maintained.
So the solution: I took each camera's footage, lots and lots of 2 minute clips, and pasted them together in quicktime pro to make a longer sequence. then i saved a reference file to the long sequence and brought that into FCP. I did the same for the files from the other 2 cameras. Then multiclipped those reference movies.
The newest version of the FireStore firmware has a setting that lets you create a quicktime reference movie from within the firestore that links the segments together. so my workflow for the future involves making these reference movie, bringing only the reference movies into FCP, and multiclipping them. problem solved.
probably 2 people who are reading this understand what i'm talking about; i'm not particularly great at explaining things. but we're back up and running . thanks for reading.

  • How can I use ALL audio tracks in multiclip editing?

I want to be able to use all audio tracks after the multiclip cut.
It's only a two camera shoot, but I want to be able to use the ambient room sound from the second camera ... and control its level (in relation to the master audio track on the first camera) AFTER the cuts are made.
Is this possible in multiclip editing? And how does one go about it?
Apologies. I've spent an hour or so in the manual, and it isn't clear ... or I'm just not finding the right reference.
    All ears,
    Ben

Sorry if I'm steering you down a path you don't want to go or even if there's a better way but I wouldn't be ding complex audio mixing anywhere near the multiclip interface. Export your reference movie or nest the multiclip project into another sequence, bring in your additional tracks, get to work. Just my preferences, I put a bunch of rough keyframes in the audio tracks and enter some markers (and make a lot of paper notes). Then I go back using the large mixer window to do the fine tweaking.
Stick around for a couple of days, some other multiclip users with more experience than I will offer some more useful suggestions.

  • Multiclips and multiple audio tracks playing at the same time

I've only just taken delivery of my first ever mac (only ever used PC) with FCP, and I'm loving it already! Done lots of reading and viewing of video etc etc, and it's not as daunting as I thought it might be. I have one question the books don't seem to answer, and I can only find one reference to this on this site, with no definitive response. FCP5 probably doesn't work this way, but just in case someone knows different......
I film and edit motorsport (karting) programmes for television in the UK, using multiple cameras. I usually lay all the video and audio tracks on the timeline, (synched) lock the audio for each (as it is engine noise, and I want it playing without abrupt changes at cuts as each kart passes each camera, whether in shot or not) then cut the video tracks and delete those video segments not required.
The most exciting aspect of FCP5 for me is the multiclip editing facility, which I have found very easy to learn and is going to save me hours of work! However, I want to know if there is a way of having each audio track from each camera used in the multiclip laid down on the timeline when you import the multiclip to the timeline from the viewer, in order that I can play each audio track from each of the cameras at the same time.
I know how to cut from angle to angle, leaving the audio from the selected angle as the one audio track playing, but I want all of the tracks to appear in the timeline and play at the same time. I know there's a bit of a workaround by locking the video and importing each audio track from each clip independently, but if you do have to re-synch one of the multiclips, this means the audio is not then synched with the original clip, which will have had an in point set before being imported in as part of a multiclip.
I can understand why you might want to keep audio from one camera only playing over the whole multiclip, or to switch between audio from each, but in my case I prefer all audio to play at the same time. The workaround is still do-able for me as I'm only talking about engine notes, which if they are a few frames out is not very noticeable at all, but I would like to know if I'm right in thinking I cannot do it the way I would like to?
Wish I'd used FCP from the start, but glad I've got it now.....especially with the 30 inch screen! It's 4.40am, been going over 19 hours straight and I'm still making comments like...."WOW, that's brilliant"...every half hour!

  • Multiclip on FCP 7 with timecode: multiple files for the same camera have different Angle

    I have FCStudio 7 with OS 10.6.8
I just filmed a concert with 6 cameras (Sony XDCAM).  They are all timecode sync'd.
For various reasons there are multiple vid files for each camera (i.e. 172_003 thru 172_006 for camera 1).
I imported into FCP 7 using SonyXDCAM plug in with no problems.  Each camera file group was given its camera number as the Reel Name (i.e. Camera 1) and that camera's number as its Angle Name (i.e. 1).
Now when I try and create a multiclip using all six cameras, instead of keeping all the files for a specific camera under a single angle name it treats each file as its own camera angle.  It treats each file as an individual camera instead of having the files flow as a single clip from a single camera based on their timecode.  In viewer I have 8 different angles for a single camera (because of 8 files).  In the make media window for multiclip, the Angle Name is different for each clip but its position is still aligned to its timecode.
I worked the same project last year and the multiple files for each camera lined up fine, based on its timecode value and camera/reel name.  I can't see what has changed.
I need each camera's files to sync under that camera Angle Name, and for the files to play in the same angle spot in viewer.
All advice welcomed as I'm in a major time crunch to complete the job.
    Thanks.

Well why not just prebuild each angle in its own sequence with sequence timecode matching the source timecode?  Export with current settings and import these files back into fcp and then create your multiclip.

  • Please help me to come out of this dilemma.

    Hi
    I am in dilemma.
Recently i have joined a new organization which is a world leader in its field . The company name is very popular around the globe. But the thing is its almost 4 months , and as an Oracle DBA , i am not getting chance to work on something interesting / challenging . The thing is , i studied the environment here and i think most of my work involves only preparing DB docs , attending meeting and raising support tickets once a while. So very minimal technical work.
To be honest, in last 4 years of my career i haven't worked in such a large organization before so during interview i didn't ask for type of work ,and i just wanted to join this organization as it will have a dramatic impact when i mention the name in my resume . I do not want to quit this organization so early because it will have a bad impression . Also , i think speaking to my bosses will not work because they cant help it in any way .
I am happy with every thing else here , but i want to leave this company for doing something challenging as an Oracle DBA , but want to stay here because every thing else is damn good and also when i switch to a new company after 2 years , people will be dying to hire me ;) , am i contradicting ?
Please help me to come out of this dilemma.
    Thanks

Well, joining a big company from a small company and then leaving it just in few days would actually backfire. Next hiring people would think that since you were in capable to handle the workload in a big company(because you never worked in such environment before), you were thrown out. You won't be able to justify your reason that you left because you didnt' find enough challenge there because it can be completely blown away by a simple counter that how did you know that there was no challenging work there as you never stayed there even for a year too! So IMO, you would do more harm for you than anything good be quitting now. Its a mistake not to ask about the work but you have committed it already . What you should n't do is to do add another one and that is to leave the company now.
Since you are not having much work, why don't you use it learn more about the company, its various works, other divisons and above all, to learn oracle database in your spare time. There is no place where you would be given challenges for your sake. If there is work it would come to you else you would be remaining free. You are working as a normal dba I believe not in support or something like that for you, every time, a new issue ticket is ready. If you have spare time with you, use it wisely to understand how things are working , both in your organization and with oralce db. Spend time doing trainings and learn more about the product, complete at least and then leave.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • A BUG in FCP 7: Multiclip Markers slip when copied from project to project

Alas, not all things are great with multiclip markers in FCP 7.
We are shooting multicam on a show with dual system sound. Individual camera angles are synced to the production sound (broadcast .wav) and merged to create new master clips that use the stereo production audio instead of the original camera audio, then the new synced/merged clips are made into multiclips using In points set on the slate claps as the multiclip synchronization method. Markers added to the A angle and B angle do indeed stay attached when added in the viewer (thanks for that bug fix, Apple). The assistants are marking the beginning of each take and all resets on each angle, so that both Angle 1 (A camera) and Angle 2 (B camera) have the exact same markers on the exact same frames.
Problem is, when the editor opens the dailies project and copies the bins with the marked multiclips into his editor project, or his or her version of the dailies project is updated, the markers on Angle 2 (B camera) all shift in time (like they were all slipped). All Angle 2 markers in each individual clip slip the same amount, but every multiclip's markers slip a different amount. Copying clips from one bin to another IN THE SAME PROJECT yields the same slippage, and what's more, even messes up the markers in the original master multiclips (as if the copies were not affiliates but literally the same master clip as the multiclips). To make matters even worse, sometimes it's the A camera (Angle 1) that has markers slipping.
This bug does not affect multiclips that are made from the clips using original camera audio. Since the production has, thus far, been unable to properly jam sync the audio and camera timecode, each merged audio multiclip can have, potentially, three different timecode numbers associated with each track, Angle 1, Angle 2 and the stereo audio. Clearly FCP has no idea what to do when it attempts to recreate the clips in another bin or project, but the offset (i.e. how much the markers slip) is not directly correlated to any timecode offset between the different tracks of the multiclip. How weird is that?
It's forcing the editors to mark their own footage, which is really the assistant's job. At least in FCP 6 you could mark the original angles prior to multiclipping and the markers would stay as you switched angles, or you could mark the original angles and then replace the angle in the multiclip with the marked angle and, again, the markers would stay affixed to the angle when you switched from angle to angle. Now that doesn't even work.
    Help!
    Any workaround out there?

Actually the 4:2:2 smoother is for prepping footage in a 4:2:2 color space for chroma keying (it prevents stairstepping due to the blocky chroma values). It is the right setting for DVCPRO HD.
Sure about that? because it already is in a 4:2:2 color space, and there are no stair steps. Only DV has those ugly stair steps. I believe this is for DV. I have never used it, and I have comped a lot of DVCPRO HD.
am using the Chroma Keyer filter from FCP (possibly derived from Primatte?
Nope...Primatte is a NEW filter in FCP 7. The built in Chroma Keyer in FCP downright *****. I use DV Matte Pro for simple stuff in FCP, and Primatte or Keylight for the more complex ones, and in AE or Motion. But Primatte is now in FCP 7...well, a "lite" version called Primatte RT.
If chroma smoothing is causing that issue...don't use it.

  • Expanded iBook G4 Memory Dilemma

Hi, I have upgraded my 14inch iBook G4's RAM from the original 512 MB to 768 MB DDR SDRAM. The install went perfectly, and the system recognizes the 768 MB RAM. There is, however, a dilemma. After upgrading the RAM, I still notice some slow performance with my applications. The spinning wheel appears frequently sometimes with only a handful of applications running. Using the Dashboard widget iStatPro, I think I have found out why this is occurring. According to iStatPro (with just Safari, Mail, and Stickies open), I see the following approximated stats:
    WIRED: 154MB
    ACTIVE: 358MB
    INACTIVE: 240MB
    FREE: 9MB
The problem, it would appear, lies with the free memory. I have tried an application called iFreeMem to "optimize" the ratio of inactive to free memory. I have had fantastic results with transferring inactive to free memory. Unfortunately, iFreeMem is not free software. I was curious if there was a free (perhaps UNIX/Terminal) way of doing this optimization. It seems silly to have to pay for more memory, and then not being able to use it without paying for a third party program. I would appreciate any insight anyone can provide in regards to this matter. Thanks guys!

You have 249MB RAM available (Free and Inactive). The fact that Free is low (9MB) is good. This is OS X making the best use of your system resources.Reading OS X Memory Usage
If these figures are like this whilst you do your main work your should look elsewhere for your performance increases such as keeping at least 15% of your hard disk free and reducing the number of widgets in Dashboard at any one time.

I cannot burn purchased tunes on a blank disc because of the infamous "error 4310".  Countless ITunes customers are frustrated that there are no  "free" answers for this dilemma. Unfortunately, the  "support"  that is so highly promoted and encouraged is merely community members venting their frustrations.
ITuines this is not at all professional on your part.

Hi to everyone that replied and many thanks for your input.
I have bought well known and established artists CD's containing their music, track lists and artwork files from branded retailers. When I have loaded them into iTunes, it automatically loaded the artwork files FROM the CD I bought, so all that nonsense about audio CD's having nothing but audio isn't accurate. No, they were not DVD's either. I will endeavor to find a software package that CAN do what I need as an independent artist. iTunes just doesn't cut the mustard for me, even though it's free. I do know about issues with copyright and artists protection, but there should be something that can be done or made in iTunes, so it doesn't infringe copyright of artists, but can be used by artists like myself without the software being abused by freeloaders. Oh well, maybe when I'm too old for this malarkey...

  • Who can HELP me with an seemingly impossible iTunes dilemma?

Good day all and greetings from Malta (EU),
I have what seems to be the need for an "impossible" solution. Let me explain my dilemma.
I have never wanted to use the new versions of iTunes past 10.7 for ONLY ONE simple reason that the developers of iTunes have decided to eliminate.
I am a digital dj - I use iTunes as my cataloging system for all the tracks I play. I am the kind of person that likes to prepare as much as possible before I play. Up till 10.7 there was an option to open MULTIPLE playlist windows. This was very important to me because that would mean practically that how ever the mood moved on the dance floor I was able to just choose from the open playlist windows without having to spend needless time searching for them while playing (which can be a big distraction)
I have recently purchased my FIRST Mac (17" MacbookPro) and I have Yosemite running on it. I have followed tutorials to downgrade iTunes (using Pacifier & AppZapper) to 10.7 in order to get the only one feature I needed but was not available in future upgrades.
I have a few problems. When I connect my iPhone it is not recognised and when I use the finder window I constantly get error messages popping up.
So here's the thing. I DON'T mind re-installing the updated version of iTunes to make the OS run properly and to connect my iPhone but I can't do this without the old version as well.
Is there a way to be able to rename the 10.7 version of iTunes so I can continue using that and it's own library AND also be able to install the latest iTunes so I can eliminate my problems and continue using the 10.7 version. I can point out that the updated version does not need to have the same library... I'd ONLY need that to eliminate the error messages & be able to connect my devices.
can ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE help me with this dilemma? I searched "high and low" on Google and in the Apple Support Forum but I have failed to find an solution....
Thanks and I am sooooo looking forward to someone helping me as soon as possible.
    And Happy Holidays EVERYONE!!!
    Chris Brown

You could repartition your drive to have a different OS X with the older iTunes there, and the newer iTunes on the existing partition. Back up everything beforehand. See Kappy's advice in this thread. Partitioning my Hard Drive

  • VOF dilemma - will stripping EXE's etc. hurt VOF?

Dilemma - since VOF (Virus Outbreak Filters) are the last step in the message pipeline, do you hurt VOF performance by stripping attachments with filters? Specifically for attachment types you never would allow in anyway (EXE, COM, etc)?
    Scenario One
Message or Content filter removes EXE
Outbreak occurs, VOF rule set to trigger on specific size EXE
Since a filter removed EXE, VOF has nothing look for, and you get pounded with thousands of "remnants" - virus messages without attachment. No virus attachment therefore no client damage, but helpdesk buried with support calls/complaints about suspicious but harmless messages.
    Scenario Two
    No filter to remove EXE
Outbreak occurs, VOF kicks in and stops most messages.
But before VOF kicks in, 15 messages with EXE's get through and infect clients. You are at greater risk since you didn't stop EXE's in the first place with a filter.
Are these scenarios correct? Any best practice suggestions?

Add a content filter to strip the exes.
This way, you can check for viruses and only take action if the message remains - it won't get to vof. Not a perfect solution but might be more of what you are looking for.
Where I work there are a whole batch of file extensions that are not allowed. We don't strip them in message filters since if they are a virus then the virus checker wouldn't find them. We have a content filter that looks for dictionary match in the X-IronPort-AV header for a dictionary of mass mailers that we know of and drop the message. If it gets past that content filter and still has a prohibited attachment, we drop the attachment.
NOTE: if you are doing it with scenario 1 and don't have some spare capacity then I wouldn't recommend letting them go to brightmail/ipas, and virus scanning.
You can configure in the cli with policyconfig->filters or in the gui under mail policies - incoming content filters. After adding the filters in the guii, you need to goto incoming mail policies to enable it for the for the default policy.
    Filter Name: Drop_Mass_Mailers
    Conditions:
    header-dictionary-match("MassMailers","X-IronPort-AV")
    Actions:
    drop()
    Description:
