Multiple content databases and Project Sites

Hi,
I am in the process of migrating our Project 2007 PWA + Project Workspaces data to Project 2010.  Our PWA site and the Project Workspaces are in a single content DB (2007) and I am trying to work out what I should do when I migrate it.  Our content
DB is about 150GB which I believe is around the maximum that it should be.
I am unsure about a couple of things.
1. In SharePoint, you can assign multiple content DBs to a single web application, but each Site Collection will only live in a single content DB.  Given that all of the Project Sites are actually just sub-sites of a single Site Collection I cannot see
a way to ever split them up into multiple content DBs.  Am I missing something?
2. There is another post in this forum talking about whether to split PWA and Project Sites into different content DBs (and therefore Site Collections) with Project 2010 or not.  Even though I have read it I am still unclear as to whether or not I should
do this and what the actual pros and cons are.
Thanks in advance for the replies.
Cheers,
David

All,
The requester wants more than 1 Site Collection for Project Sites and he wants more than 1 content database for each site collection. Neither of which apparently SharePoint can do. However,
for large numbers of Projects and associated Project Sites this will almost certainly be a necessity.
The Suggestion was that the PWA site collection and Project Sites site collection could be different and hence on different databases (even web apps). Fine. But not helpful, really, since that
only gets us to two site collections.  One very small and one that will potentially grow very large, too large.
What appears to also have been suggested was to create a separate site collection for very large project sites.
While this approach could work, it is administration intense and is bound to have issues related to PWA navigation, etc...and certainly not part of the Project Server 2010 PWA automatic Site
Creation methodology.  It also is after the fact and not really scalable.  it would be possibe, but tricky to do this after the fact - moving it from one site collection to another - and then reset the URL in PWA Server Settings,
could be done.
I would suggest something similar, but a bit more pragmatic...Thanks Bruce!
Create 1 new Site Collection for Project Sites (same web app) in a new content DB - use script.
Setup PWA to provision all new Project Sites to that new site collection.  Maintains automatic site provisioning.
Monitor
the size of the DB, when it reaches a reasonable limit (? 50GB ?) - repeat this process, create another site collection in a new DB - but
change the PWA provisioning settings to have all new sites go to the new (next) site collection.  Existing sites will still be found (keep the site collections in the same web app for continuity) and can have content added (I guess up
to a point - monitor).  Repeat as needed.
Another way I can conceive of is to create a fixed set of a small number of site collections (in the same web app) and manage the Project Site creation manually selecting which
project site goes against which site collection. Division along some logical boundary such as Departments makes sense. But other divisions may be used. This could scale by simply adding more site collections at each department (HR-2), should any given department's
DB grow too big. Then all the logically related Project Sites will hang off the site collection selected and be part of that database for that site collection for that "department" let's say.
just a variation of the above solution.  Monitoring the DB size is key in both cases.
There may of course be caveats to any approach other than OOTB and all in 1 site collection, around navigation, web parts, solution starters, etc...some of which are addressed elsewhere. Of
course, this is admin intensive but retains automatic provisioning for new sites. I believe it would work and meet the requirements for smaller DB's and multiple Site collections for PWA Project Sites and scale to thousands of project sites.
Thanks,
Eric S.

  • Detached a mysite content database and then re-attached it, now my sites are all down

I detached a mysite content database using the
    Dismount-SPcontentdatbase
    then
    MOunt-Spcontentdatabase
and now none of the mysites will work.   Is there some other step I need to do to bring them back online?
    [email protected]

OK, I made a big mistake.
When I mounted the content database I used the -server option and selected the wrong server.
So instead of re-mounting the database, I accidentally created a blank database.
So I dismounted that content database and then remounted the database on the correct server and all my mysites began to work correctly.
This is definitely a lesson learned on my part.   Hopefully this helps other out if they make the same mistake.

  • Unable to delete a SharePoint 2010 My Sites content Database and IIS Web Site even after changing timeout

    Hi,
I am currently having issues with deleting a content database for mysites which has web application http://<servername>:11100. The database was migrated from sharepoint 2010, but on creating web app it timed out (was corrupt due to this).  Problem
is I cannot delete now as I get "Request Timed Out". Even when I try just deleting the Web App or the Content Database individually. I have already updated the timeout on the Central Admin App Pool to 300. This used to work, but no joy now. Seems
like ever since I added this My Sites Web App I am getting this problem.
The setup is 1 Database Server (64GB), 1 Admin Server (24GB) and 3 WFE Servers (12GB each) - all VMS. System is also running PowerPivot. Central Admin is running on a WFE server. Is this setup OK for just one user? Reason I have 3 WFE is this already existed
and App Servers will be scaled out when we start testing. Running 11 Web Applications.
    Help appreciated - any ideas?
    Thanks.
    John.
OH - I tried to delete with powershell and it tells me it requires SHarePoint Administration Service to be running, but the problem is it is already running on the WFE with Central Admin on.

    Hi John,
The timeout may cause this issue. But would you let me know the error message when we delete the database?
However, you can delete the web application(my site host) and click delete database and IIS web site option.
Also, you can try to clean cache and check if issue persists:
    Please stop SharePoint Timer Service.
Please navigate to the cache.ini file location:
Delete all the .xml file and only leave cache.ini in the file location.
Edit the Cache.ini file and set it to 1.
     Save the Cache.ini file
Start SharePoint Timer Service. The cache file will be created autumnally.
Any questions, please let me know.

  • Existing SharePoint 2010 Content Database Attach – No Site Collections

First, let me start off by saying that I have read every single thread I could find on this subject, such as:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/0c34ca6f-0db1-4d61-a48c-c4704dd86513/currentsitecount-is-zero-in-upgraded-site

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c8df1760-275a-43a4-b3fc-cf257c56d8e2/orphaned-entry-in-config-database
That said, even though my situation is a bit different than those posts, I have tried all the things!
    Let me break it down:
Our prod server is a sad Frankenstein upgrade from Project/SharePoint 2003 to 2007 to 2010.
The problem is not on our prod server.
Our test server was a database attach installation.  It mostly works.
The problem is, we have this old content database which housed the project sites that were created on 2003, then upgraded to 2007, then upgraded to 2010 – but when it attaches to the test server, it's empty.  The "current number of site collections"
in CA shows 0 and the CurrentSiteCount in powershell = 0.
We have to keep these sites and their links for compliance reasons (7 year retention policy!) and we haven’t really cared that they aren’t working on the test server…except that we are going to be upgrading to 2013 this year, and that’s a database attach
no matter what.  So I have to solve this now.
    I’ve checked the following:
The data is there on the database.
The database name I’m typing is correct.
The version of the db is up to date.
The top level site is set to Exclusion.
    Permissions.
    Here’s what I’ve tried:
    Attaching using powershell
    Attaching using Central Admin
    Detaching and reattaching
    Running psconfig
    Resetting IIS
When the database is unattached, I have tried the “Recover data from an unattached content database” function – it recognizes the database (if I type it in wrong, it tells me I don’t have access) but then finds nothing in the site collections.
The prod server is perfectly happy with these sites, and we copied the database from prod after the 2010 upgrade, so I don’t know what the issue is.
I appreciate any thoughts any of you have.  I’m stumped!

  • How to add an existing content database to new Site collection

    Hi All,
Can anyone help to figure out how can I add existing content database to a new site collection in SharePoint 2013 foundation.
We have more than 40 site collections under one web application, and only one site collection is returning 404 error. When checked in the central admin to view all site collections, the details on the right side of the site is not visible, and unable
to delete it. The database is not corrupt, as I tried to add the same content database to a new web application, and it works perfectly in a new web app.
As we couldn't find any solution, the only option we thought of was to blow the site collection and create a new one and add the exisiting database, but I am unaware as to how can I add existing database to new create site collection. Can anyone help
    me with this please?
    Regards,
    DJ

    It's working....
The current database was corrupt I guess, (not sure though). Took old backup file and tested to see if it's working. After the test was successful...
Removed the current database in CA
Delete the current database in SQL server
Restored the working backup file in SQL server
Added the content db in CA
That's it... the site collection is working now...

  • Content database and share point configuration databases in different sql servers

    HI
i have a sharepoint 2010 farm and connected to a sql server ,
here it can be possible to connect all sharepoint configuration databases to one sql server,
and content database in different sql server ,
if i do in future can i face any issues?
    adil

Yes you can. You can specify the SQL server whilst creating the databases and as long as you have configured the required permissions that will be fine. If you really wanted you could have a dedicated SQL instance for each database, although that would be
    very wasteful.
There are no significant issues, you will have a bit more maintenance to look after two SQL servers but that's about it.

  • List with Multiple Content Types and Making new Forms...

I go to create custom forms based on content types.  After I create using the wizard in the list it always shows the same form no matter which content type I pick.
    what am I doing wrong?
    David Jenkins

You can change the custom form on content type through SharePoint Designer. Do not change it on the content type directly, when you add content type in a list/library, then open list's content types in SP Designer and then select your content type and modify
the URLs of your custom display form.
I have updated a document in gallery for
step by step development of custom workflow and custom task form. In this document you can find the association of custom form with content type using SP Designer.

  • Problems with flash content (MySpace and other sites)

For the past few months I have been unable to view any media content on MySpace (videos, music) and a couple other sites. This is a real annoyance as I am a music reviewer and I can't listen to much of the music people want me to check out since it's usually on MySpace.
I've tried uninstalling Flash Player and reinstalling it. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Shockwave. Nothing works. I'm using Firefox 3.0.10 but it also fails to work on Safari. Works fine when I view the site on a PC.
I keep searching for answers and coming up with nothing but "Install the latest Flash Player" which I have...

I've tried uninstalling Flash Player and reinstalling it. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Shockwave.
Did you repair permissions and restart your computer afterwards? Make sure you have installed Flip4Mac, VLC Media Player and Perian.
Also, make sure you are using the latest version of Quicktime as well as Flash Player and Shockwave.

  • Multiple domains names and web sites with only one SLS and one static IP

I tried to find a post on this topic but I still can't find what needs to be done.
SLS is configured for one domain with one web site and it's working well. We will call it domain1.com. Here is the config:
    Static IP: 69.x.x.x
    DNS setting under Server Admin:
    hostname: server.domain1.com
Two DNS entries under domain1.com with:
    www - alias - server.domain1.com
server - Machine - 10.0.1.x (fixe IP for server on LAN)
    Web settings under Server Admin:
    server.domain1.com - 10.0.1.x - Port 80
Domain1.com is managed with DynDNS Custom DNS Service with 1 record:
    domain1.com - A-record - 69.x.x.x
I want to host a second domain (for a website) called domain2.com. It's also registred at DynDNS and I have custom DNS setting to configure.
What's need to be done to have both domains with seperate web site on SLS under DNS and Web settings (beside the fact that I will have 2 different folders with the website files in it). I understand that I will need a new entry in the DNS for the new domain (domain2.com) and also an entry in the Web Service pane. But what are the details.
    Thanks.

When you said, "you don't need to do CNAME for both sites…", would this method still allow me to use personal web addresses for both sites?
Yes. With "Ordinary Forwarding" you normally just type your .Mac url (web.mac.com/username/sitename) into a form at the place where you have your name.
I thought I was using 'web.mac.com' as the 'www' CNAME (alias) for my personal domain name (web address), so that when someone typed in my personal domain name they would 'go' to the domain registration location, which would then pass it on to the .Mac server, where my web site is hosted.
That's exactly right. It's just not the only way to do that. Ordinary Forwarding is another way, but it differs in terms of what appears in the address bar of the browser. Either you will see web.mac.com/username/.... or, if you add "masking", you will see your personal name for all pages. The CNAME method results in a address bar that reads www.myname.com/sitename/pagename.html.
    Am I way off?
    All help gratefully received,
    Jeff

  • Any recommendations on productivity for database and project management, Bento was good but no longer sync with ical and address book

I've unfortunately updated to the new Bento on MakBook and iPad and synced my data and in the process it tells me that iCal and Address books will not sync any more.  I have several projects I am working on and looking for something that will syn with iCal, address book and Busy Cal to manage my  time efficiently and seamlessly. Help?

I think you're in the wrong forum - this is for developers, who write programs for apple products.
As for Bento, their problem is due to Apple's changes in the API.  The code that syncs with calendars and contacts is now deprecated, which means at some point in the future, it will no longer work.  This problem will affect all developers, so you probably won't find any replacement for Bento.

  • Site Collection Content Database 250GB Limit

    Hi All,
i recently read that the supported maximum size of a content Database is 250GB. is this true ? if we want to exceed this limit, is there any way to do that ? if we want to store more than that (1TB+) what can we do?
    Thank you!

    Hello ,
    #Copied
Content databases of up to 4 TB are supported when the following requirements are met:
Disk sub-system performance of 0.25 IOPs per GB. 2 IOPs per GB is recommended for optimal performance.
You must have developed plans for high availability, disaster recovery, future capacity, and performance testing.
You should also carefully consider the following factors:
Requirements for backup and restore may not be met by the native SharePoint Server 2013 backup for content databases larger than 200 GB. It is recommended to evaluate and test SharePoint Server 2013 backup and
alternative backup solutions to determine the best solution for your specific environment.
It is strongly recommended to have proactive skilled administrator management of the SharePoint Server 2013 and SQL Server installations.
The complexity of customizations and configurations on SharePoint Server 2013 may necessitate refactoring (or splitting) of data into multiple content databases. Seek advice from a skilled professional architect
and perform testing to determine the optimum content database size for your implementation. Examples of complexity may include custom code deployments, use of more than 20 columns in property promotion, or features listed as not to be used in the over 4 TB
    section below.
Refactoring of site collections allows for scale out of a SharePoint Server 2013 implementation across multiple content databases. This permits SharePoint Server 2013 implementations to scale indefinitely. This
refactoring will be easier and faster when content databases are less than 200 GB.
It is suggested that for ease of backup and restore that individual site collections within a content database be limited to 100 GB. For more information, see Site
    collection limits.

  • List and libraries in sharepoint 2010 content database

I want to know when I create List or form library . where every form of form library will go.
Will it save into content database ?
I want to make report from the content database for form library or list ?

All Content in SharePoint is stored in the content database and there are APIs that you can use to access the contents of a particular list or library in SharePoint.  But if you are thinking that you can access a specific list as a single table or portion
of a database table in the content database for your report then you will be disappointed for two reasons.
First, direct access to the SQL databases in SharePoint is prohibited by your license agreement.  It is too easy to break things in SharePoint when you start accessing the databases directly.
Second, individual entries in a list or library are not stored directly in one place.

  • Site collection in a particular content database

How can we make sure to create a site collection in a particular content database?

    Hi Arun,
There is no direct option from SharePoint UI to select content database while creating Site collection, However you can do that using power shell .. here is the code..

    $WebsiteName = "Communities"
    $WebsiteDesc = "Communities site"

  • Creation of dynamic site collection and sub-sites

We are having an enterprise system where organization wide operations are maintained. Recently we decided to provide collaboration features for each operation maintained in the system using SharePoint 2013, since that enterprise system did not provide
    any social/collaboration features.
    Assumptions/constraints -
    1. Every year 2500 operations are created
    2. Each operation can have documents and other content scaling upto 5 GB.
    3. Only SharePoint provider hosted apps are allowed to build the solution
For seamless integration, we are creating an automation component which will a SharePoint provision site automatically when an Operation is created in the enterprise system (we will get the trigger through web services)
    Proposed solution -
    After going through
Software boundaries and limits for SharePoint 2013, I'm thinking of proposing this architecture -
     1. A windows service will be created which will accept the trigger to create a site and take care of provisioning the entire site
     2. A maximum of 700 sites will be created per site collection (based on the size calculations and keeping some buffer)
     3. Once a site collection hits 700 sub-sites, a new site collection is automatically created for provisioning the new sites
     4. Provision the apps and add them to site pages using powershell/CSOM
Kindly let me know if this approach is effective or any major road-blocks we need to take care of in this.

    Hi Margriet,
We are looking at the SharePoint 2013 limitations and trying to devise the best possible solution. We are open to create multiple content databases for multiple site collections or with single contentdatabase having multiple site collections (which doesn't
look like feasible). So it is a matter of deciding which will best suit this scenario.
