Multiple Masks

Essentially, here's what I'm trying to do. I have a movie
clip that is a mask that I can move around. When I reach certain
areas of the stage, I want a new mask to expand (scale up or
something along those lines) and reveal more of the background. Can
this be done or do I need to have multiple layers of multiple
backgrounds as a workaround? Everything I've tried seems to only
display one mask at a time.
Also, I'm creating this file to work in a Flash 7
player.

you can have multiple masks but an object can only be masked
by, at most, one mask. and masks can be moved and scaled.

  • Multiple Masks on same clip

I have a clip with several primary and secondary corrections on it and want to apply a mask to a primary correction.
So far so good, but how do I apply a different mask to the same clip but to a different primary or secondary correction layer?
SG allows me to use only ONE mask for the whole clip? Even with multiple primary and secondary corrections?
The problem is as soon as I apply a second mask to a different effect on the same clip, the mask already there is replaced by the now on I just created and the other mask ist lost.
Is this a lacking feature or is it something I do wrong?
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Patrick.

    Hi Patrick,
You didn't do anything wrong! But there is a way to add multiple masks to the same clip: Create a new grading track and add a new grading clip to the track (here is a link to an article showing you how to add new grading tracks: http://adobe.ly/PGrPvl)
You can add one mask per grading clip. If you just want one mask, add it to the original clip. To add a second mask, add a new grading track as described above. To add a third mask, add another grading track above the first one, and so on.
Let us know if this works for you!

  • Multiple masks not adding like they should

    Hi all,
I don't use motion all that much, so I may have not done something right.  I have a video clip with an object I need to isolate from the background.  E object is complex enough where I'll need to have multiple masks make to do it properly.  So I add my footage to a group, then add my first mask.  Once it's set up, I select the footage layer again in the group and add a second mask and so forth.  The problem is it is only showing the top mask in the list of masks under the video clips layer.  If I reorder the masks in the layer, whichever mask is at top will be the only one that exposes the footage.  I checked and all masks are set to add, and all are part of the footage layer (there is a disclosure triangle on the footage layer that will show/hide the masks). I'm not sure what I may have done wrong.  Any tips would be welcome!!

Sorry I can not reproduce what you are seeing. Make sure all masks are set to add for the blend  mode and the invert check box is not checked. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would trash Motion preferences using Digital Rebellion's "Preference Manager' which is a free download.

  • Clipping with multiple masks

Is there a way to clip an object with multiple masks? For example, with the outlined letters of a word?
    I'm using Illustrator CS3 on a Mac.
    Thanks,
    Eugene

    Eugene,
JPEG does not have transparency, but I don't think you really need it. All you want is for the background image to look lighter, right?
I think it would be easier to use an "Opacity Mask" rather than a clipping mask to create the effect you are after.
    To do that:
    1. Make a 75% gray rectangle the size of your photo and align it to the photo.
    2. Move the text that will contain the "solid" photo above the gray rectangle and make it white, then group the text with the gray rectangle.
    3. Select the group along with the photo and choose "Make Opacity Mask" from the Transparency flyout menu.
You can edit the opacity mask anytime, by selecting the masked group in the layers panel and clicking the opacity thumbnail in the transparency panel. To view only the opacity mask Shift-click on the thumbnail.
This should be easier to edit and export fine.

  • Animate sketch (and the drawing hand) with multiple masks

I want to animate a bunch of illustrations (with 100+ path objects) i will draw inside Illustrator with my WACOM tablet and later add my Hand by motion path to draw it live.
What i did was to import the final .ai layer (comp sized 1080), add the path by copy & paste as a mask (or better as 100+ masks) and apply the Generate > Stroke effect. I ended up with a beautiful animation of my illustration, without using the path tool in AE.
Now i want to copy & paste the mask or motion path to the position of the image of my hand. Problem is: this just works by select and copy mask path, not multiple masks.
Is there a way to access the position data out of the stroke effect or another way to copy the exact position data of the motion path to match it with the actual position of the stroke effect?
    Would be great!

Thank you for your quick response, seems likely. I will reduce number of masks by using less several strokes in illustrator. And maybe there is a way to automatically join paths chronologically (endpoint of path below to startpoint of path above) in illustrator.
But what i keep in mind is that the stroke effect itself does exactly the same: it uses different masks sequentially as a motion path to locate a position, to where die path is drawn. Couldn't it be possible in the same way to move a null or a layer? Or how does the stroke effect face this "problem"?

  • Same layer - multiple masks.

    Sorry ..real basic question.
How does one have multiple masks on the same Layer?
eg. 3 window frames  in one image (layer) , each requiring  an "insert" ( from one layer).

    Select your layer
Select the pen tool (letter g)
    Draw the first mask
Set the first mask to subtract
    Draw the second mask
Set the second mask to subtract
    Repeat as needed
    Another option
Add a colored solid to your comp above the layer you want to mask
Change the blend mode of the colored layer to multiply or overlay so you can see through it
Select the colored layer that you can now see through
Select the pen tool or other mask tool
Draw your masks using the underlying layer as a guide
Set the colored layer as an alpha inverted track matte for the layer you wish to mask
To learn how to use mask tools in detail type mask in the Search Help field at the top right corner of AE and follow the links provided for excellent tutorials and instructions.

  • How to I toggle the adjustments from a single mask when there are multiple masks of the same kind?

If I have multiple brush masks how can I toggle just one of them on and off; for instance just the active pin.  I know I can turn off all of the brush masks at once but I just can't figure out how to toggle them individually. Thanks!

I think I know what you mean but if you do Reset it resets ALL the brushes instead of just the one.  The OP just wants to toggle one brush.
    To toggle one brush.
Click on the brush you want to toggle.
Double click the word "Effect:" int the upper righthand of the slider box,  This resets the sliders to zero
To reverse, you can click undo
To see the difference many times, just click back and forth in history to see the changes before you do the undo.

  • Multiple masking

    Hi!
I have an application which is needed tricky mask for one movie. This mask should contain several movies. But as result, mask needs to have just common part of these movies.
    Thanks for any ideas

guide layer objects are made transparent by flash.  to use transparency in masks you need to enable the cacheAsBitmap property of the masked object and masking object.  you can remove those guide layers, assign your two container children alpha's of zero and you'll see the same thing you're seeing now.
in any case, alpha masking is one way to create the effect you want.  i suggested another more flexible way.
anyway, for anyone else checking this thread, you might want to take into consideration the level of expertise of the two people disagreeing.

  • Multiple masks help

    Hi,
In motion i have a background set up and i want 3 pieces of video footage inset in the background, where i will use the camera to move around to view them.
My problem is, i can't create seperate masks on one layer and i can't merge the layers. Due to this, the masks are 'masking over' each other and therefore i can't have all 3 in use at the same time. How can i merge the mask layers or create 3 masks on one layer?
    Thanks

Thanks but still not entirely sure.
I'm assuming you are talking about the blending mode so if you are do you know what i should be setting them to?
The options are add, subtract, replace and intersect but i still can't get much better after playing around with different combination's with these. They either seem to have no effect or to make one of the masks work or the whole screen black.
    Cheers

  • Subtract multiple channel blur masks in Premiere CC?

I'm making a portrait of a person, more or less a talking head and I want to smoothen everything in the picture except for the eyes and the mouth. I add the channel blur effect to the clip and draw masks around the eyes and the mouth. This makes the eyes and the mouth blurry, so I would want to inverse the effect keeping these parts sharp. But I can only inverse one mask? Is there a way to subtract the masks?

In premiere you can only inverse one mask.
For subtracting multiple masks you will have to go into AE.

  • Multiple Secondary Color Correction Possible?

I'm having a strange problem trying to use the secondary color correction inside the 3 way color corrector. It seems to work ok for the 1st filter, but if I try to use it for a a second or more instance of the filter, it seems to behave strangely or not at all.
I can select a color using the eyedropper, and sometimes it will show up in the color swatch, sometimes not.
If I chose to show the 'mask' of the results, it will usually show the clip as white in the program monitor, so I can't see where I'm masking.
I have a feeling that this might have to do with multiple masks interacting with the secondary color correction, and they somehow counteract each other. It doesn't seem very intuitive about how to fix it though.
I'm also noticing pretty intense banding with the 3 way, I know I can smooth it with the other controls in the color corrector, but I'm also wondering if this might have to do with some secret sequence or screen preview setting that I may have read about before.
    Thanks for any advice.

The mask should change from white to composite image when you select the left-hand eyedropper.  Is this not happening?

  • Premiere Pro Effect Mask Tracking problem

I love this new feature, when you just choose the elpise o square and blur out the licence plate for example
but how to apply multiple masks and how to delete the mask for example when you do not need it, if the subject you want to mask out moves..
now the mask is travelling around when the subject is out of frame and blurs other stuff that is not needed
i hope you understand what I want to know
    so first
    1. how to delete the mask at specific frame
    2. how to change opacity of the mask to 0% after keyframe ( I created keyframe, changed the opacity to 0% but this then works for the whole clip not only after the keyframe)

I tried to play with opacity inside the mask, and setting ot to 100 % and to 0% but it changes all the clips
So you are saying I should try the opacity settings that is above the blur opacity?
Yes for now I am dragging the last keyframe outside but it is just time consuming....
It took me like 2 hours to clean up easy car licence plate blur
I will play with opacity later and report how it goes

  • Creating multiple shapes out of one image

    Hi!
I tried several times now, but I just cant seem to get it. I have an image of person, with which I want to crop that person out of the background with the bezier tool. But I need to create multiple shapes to cover some background f.x under his arms. How can I do this?

You realize I cannot see your screen, right? I do not understand your use of the terms "crop out" and "cover…under hsi arms." If you remove him, how are his arms still in the shot?
Do you need multiple masks on one layer or do you need a different mask for every frame of video? That is called rotoscoping and is easily researched.

  • SpeedGrade Masks in Oct Update

I'm relatively new to SpeedGrade so I'm not sure if this isn't working or I'm not remembering correctly. Say there is one existing Primary layer. Create a mask. Click +P to generate a new Primary. The mask attaches itself to the pre-existing Primary and there is no mask on the new layer. I thought when you create a new Primary it attaches itself to that layer. Also, as long as the mask was present you could create a new layer to duplicate the mask to that new Primary/Secondary. This way it was easy to have one for working inside the mask and the other outside the mask. Am I missing something or did some functionality change/break?
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
Now SpeedGrade supports multiple masks per clip. You can create new masks in different primaries or secondaries in the same layer stack.
If you want to use an existing mask to create an outside for example, just place your new primary or secondary on top of the layer with the mask, and click the new function called "Link Current Layer", is the button with the arrow pointing down. Now those two layer will share the same mask.
You can linked as many layers as you need.
    Hope it helps,
    Fran
