Multiple routers in a peer to peer network

I have a problem getting my computers in my home peer to peer network to recognize each other.
The setup is as follows:  I have a DLink DI-604 router connected to the internet (supplied by Verizon as part of FiOS service).  When I connect my computers directly to this router, everything works including accessing shared printers and drives.
I also have a Linksys WRT300N router to provide wireless access around the house.  When I connect it to one of the DLink DI-604 ports, the router works fine including internet access.
Here is the part I have difficulty with:  with my desktops connected directly to the DI-604, and the laptop connected to the WRT300N, I cannot access the desktops from the laptop.  Dlink finds the WRT300N and assigns it an IP address (192.168.0.xxx.   I can ping through the network, e.g. from my laptop to my desktop.  However, file and printer sharing doesn't work, and the laptop cannot find the desktops through e.g. Internet Explorer (all computers are part of the same workgroup).
I have tried changing DHCP settings in the WRT300N - ie. disabling DHCP services to make WRT300N use DI-604 DHCP.  Also tried using static IP assignments all around.  Also tried disabling NAT in the WRT300N.  Also tried changing the IP address of WRT300N to the same network address as DI-604 (i.e. 192.168.0.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx).  Have also disabled all firewalls (hardware and software).  Nothing seems to work, and most of the time I change settings in the WRT300N it becomes inaccessible in spite of multiple reboots etc.
I am not a networking expert and am at my whit's end.  Can someone help?  The crux of the problem seems to be that I can ping my desktops from the laptop successfully, but nothing else works.
Thank you
David

Yes they are connected, and yes I have tried to disable DHCP in the WRT300N and set the ip address to the same range as the DLink router (192.168.0.xxx).  It doesn't work - when I disable DHCP the WRT300N becomes completely inaccessible and has to be reset. I've tried multiple powercycles, reboots of all computers etc but no luck.

  • 1) which SVN for Access dev? 2) alternative for use on peer-to-peer network ?

a - As I understand it typical SVN solutions require a server on your network... true?
b - Which SVN solution should we consider for keeping up with Access development revisions, etc?
c - Is there a solution that will work on a peer-to-peer network?
d - Free alternatives and low coast alternatives are?
    thanks for any help.

    > As I understand it typical SVN solutions require a server on your network
Sure, “typical” means “many”, so yes. However many others are file based and ONLY require a share folder and thus don't require a server. And then from that shared folder you can often use add-ons to sync that folder to web based systems like GitHub. So
you can "mix" such file only systems and then over time use web based server with that system that does not require a server, but only a shared folder.
    >Which SVN solution should we consider for keeping up with Access development revisions, etc.?
Actually, you can just simply “copy” the current version to some folder before you “release” that version. So copy and add a “version” number to the accDB file. If you application is MyInvoice.accDB, then copy to server with MyInvoice-1044.accDB (verison
1044). Since Access is a “single” file, then this works rather well compared to other systems that have “many” files. In fact I copy both the accDB, and the compiled version accDE to a folder on the server (with version number added to the file name as per
above). Thus you can go back to any previous version with great ease.
However, you might be talking about source code control in addition to versioning of software. (often the term is interchanged, but it should not be). Source code control (SCC) is a “common” means to achieve versioning of software, but ALSO allows multiple
developers to work on the project at the same time (collaboration). So there is a big difference between SVN, and SCC.
Access for a VERY long time has supported Microsoft “standard” source code control interface. While Access is a “single” file, Access is able to “logically” view each application part as a separate file. So the fact of “one” file, or “many” files does not
matter – say no more then a zip file is “one” file, but inside there are “many” files! So SCC is 100% possible in Access, and since Access has a resolution down to an object by object basis? Then developers can check-in/out individual forms, query
    code modules etc.
Access versions all the way up to 2010 support the “standard” Source Code interface.
    So:
    Using GitHub you see this:
    Using VSS, you see this:
Note that using Git, TFS, VSS etc, they ALL give the above UI with check boxes beside each object, and all give a cool "check in/check out" right click context menu not shown above.
The above Git shot is running in "file mode" without a server. Visual Source Safe is also file based, but VERY old and quote hard to find now.
So the great news is that Access has for a very long tie supported SCC, and thus is a great way to “version” your software. And Access will show you OBJECTS that are checked in/out by you as per above with the check mark and lock icon.
So inside of the access GUI you could with any SCC system that supports the standard SCC interface would know what objects are locked and you not taken ownership of. (note the "lock" and "check mark" icon beside each object.
However, Access 2013 dropped support for SCC. So all of the above cool options are NOT available for 2013.
Since Access is a “single” container, then versioning tends to be rather easy. Just copy the file to a folder with a version number appended to the file name, and you are done!
You not distinguished between versioning of your software, and that of source code control – so it not clear if you looking to just keep versions of your software, or allow team development on your application?
While SCC will give you versioning, it also allow multiple developers to work on the same application at the same time (collaboration). SVN does not necessary give you this multiple developer ability.
As noted, versioning for Access is easy - just copy the accDB (front end) to a folder on the server with a version number appended to the file name. Works quite well. I have a table in the front end with a version number, and a version number in the back
end table. My deployment code reads that version number and copies the files to the server for me.
(It is assumed that you have a split database).
However, if for 2013 you need both versioning and SCC (say to allow multiple developers), then you likely have to roll your own. I would suggest using “save-as text” command to export all access objects to a folder, and THEN use one of MANY source code control
systems that operate on that folder. Such a setup could easily be cobbled together in an afternoon of your time. And “many” SCC systems provide a GUI that is external to the developer tools/environment. This would allow you to use free tools like Git and GitHub.
For just versioning of your software? Then SCC is likely overkill, and if you using Access 2013, then you cannot use standard SCC providers anymore anyway.

  • How do i set a peer to peer network between my iMac and windows machines?

I want to set up a peer to peer network between my iMac and Windows based computers in my house.  I also want it to a wireless set up.  Mostly being done to share videos, pictures, and music. Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro to Wifi using internet sharing
    Why?
Just connect the MacBook to the same internet as your iMac.
    MacBook > Wi-Fi router > Internet.
You are connected to the internet with your iMac.
    iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet
Why do you want to go MacBook (via Wi-Fi)  > iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet?

  • Windows 7 Home Premium Peer-to-peer network over a switch

Sorry for asking such a basic question here. I am trying to setup a small office network. There are 5 computers all running Windows 7 Home Premium. Using a switch I want to connect all 5 together. I have a software package running on PC1, which will contain
a database. The other four computers, (PC2, PC3, PC4, PC5), will have a client running on them that will be able to access the database on PC1. I also have two printers and a router for internet access.
I have pulled the cables, managed to cap them correctly (tested them with a cable tester), and have connected the PC's to the switch via the cables.
I have looked on the internet for how connect the PC's together but I am getting confused, between all the videos and websites mixing XP with Windows 7 and Vista and wireless to cross-over and and and.....
Could someone please let me know what I need to do next?

    Hi,
In a peer-to-peer setup, every computer are both client and server. each computer communicates directly with others in the network. It's much more common in the home.
You need have a router (possibly with wireless capability) and the necessary Ethernet cords to run the router to the modem and from the router to all of your computers.
Then add them in the same workgroup or HomeGroup.
Here is a detailed guide, please follow that step by step:

  • Peer to Peer network error 0x80070035 the network path was not found

We are adding an XP computer to a peer to peer network with Vista machines.  The Vista machines can see the XP machine in the network but when clicking to get to share files, message comes up Windows cannot access \\XPcomputer.   The message adds that there may be a spelling error or that there may be a problem with the network.  But the error message is the one listed in the subject of this email.
XP machine is properly set to share folders and there is no other visible proble.  There is no message from the antivirus software so I am assuming the address is within the Antivirus acceptable range.  Antivirus is Norton 360.
    Any suggestions...very frustrating... thank you

  • SQL Server Expres 2008R2 on Windows 7 peer to peer network using MS Access to connect - ODBC Login Timeout

    Hello,
I have had a Microsoft Access database that was running on Windows XP against a SQL Server 2000 database.  We are running on a peer to peer network.  This all worked fine.  Recently I upgraded all the systems to Windows 7 and the Access database
to Office 2013 and setup SQL Server Express 2008R2.  I am running into strange problems trying to connect the access database to SQL Server Express.
SQL Server Express was setup with mixed authentication mode.
What is strange to me is that if I run the Access database on the same server as SQL Server Express 2008R2, everything works fine. However, if I run the Access database from a separate system (Windows usernames and passwords are identical on all systems
for all accounts).  I get a spinning circle, then after 5 minutes or so I get an error box that says "Connection Failed SQL State S1-T00 - ODBC Login Timeout Expired.
I click OK and then there is a ODBC login box,  It has trusted connection  box checked.  So, I just click ok and everything runs fine.
I have checked with the Access database the ODBC connection string (How do you change this to imbed a username and pwd?) and the connection specifies that trustedconnection = yes.
I have tried setting the odbc connection up to use a SQL Account, I have setup all of the security in SQL so that Windows accounts have access and either works on the system that is hosting the SQL database.  But when I try to connect from a separate
machine we have to wait with the timeout and then click okay.
    Any Ideas.
    Thank you!!!

I have TCP/IP and named pipes.
I will take a look at the kb article.
What puzzles me is that odbc connection is set for trusted connection, the access database is set for trusted connection.  But yet it seems that it wants to do a SQL authentication.  Then it fails, and then if you simply hit okay to do the Trusted
    Connection then it is fine.
I will read about setting the UID and PWD in code.  Been a long time since I have done that, but very doable.  Then see if the Access DB is setup with the UID and Pwd in the odbc connection string, then switch the odbc connection to be a SQL Server
connect, then maybe it will work..  Crossing my fingers.
I will be back on site next week and will give it a try then.
I will check the ports, but suspect they are fine as it works fine after it has it timed out and you hit okay to connect with a trusted connection.
    Thanks for your ideas.

  • Windows 8.1 Peer-Peer Network

I've been asked to setup a small network of PC's for a small Charity
They need 10 x PC's with Windows 8.1. No budget for a server
8.1 Pro are more expensive - can I setup 1 PC to host file and the other 9 to connect to that
They also have  3 Notebooks which will need access to the central share and about 3 Printers
As they have limited budget I can't suggest a server (well I have but)
I've not setup Peer-Peer for more than 3-4 users - will this work reliably ?
Is there limit to number pf connections - I seem to remember 10 ?

    Hello ChrisS,
Please explain a bit about the following question for better analyzation:
    1. Do you want one Windows 8.1 pro as file share server ?
    2. Why do you want to use Peer to Peer network?
    3. What do you mean about the sentence ‘Is there limit to number pf connections - I seem to remember 10 ?’ What is pf connection?

  • Problem with peer to peer networking

My work machine is a new G5 dual 2G, running 10.4.2 with an airport card. It is hooked up by ethernet to our local network. There is no wireless router in my office.
My laptop is a G4 12" running 10.3.9, also with an airport card.
I would like to fileshare by creating a peer to peer network over the airport cards.
SOOoooo, I went to the airport icon in the menu bar, created a network, gave it a password and got a funky little airport icon with a box in the middle. Went to the other computer, chose to join that network, got the same icon. Great, we have a network.
But I can't actually SEE either computer to allow me to fileshare. ( Yes, both computers have personal filesharing turned on.) If I click "network" in the finder window, the G5 sees all the machines on its ethernet network. The laptop sees nada. Crucially, if I plug the laptop in elsewhere on the network, they can see each other (using the server connection option in the GO menu).
What am I doing wrong to enable them to talk?
    Thanks....

  • Multiple routers and subnets - can't access across subnets

Hey all, I'm having an issue with multiple routers and subnets on my FIOS connection. Here's how everything is setup:
    Primary router:
ActionTec MI424WR Rev D (from Verizon)
    WAN IP: From ISP
    WAN NETMASK: From ISP
    LAN IP: 192.168.1.1LAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
Secondary router (WAN connected to ActionTec LAN):
    Belkin N750 gigabit w/ 802.11n
    WAN IP: 192.168.1.2
    WAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP: 192.168.2.1
    LAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
With this setup, I have the secondary router's WAN port connected to a LAN port on the primary router. Each are broadcasting an SSID and each are running DHCP to assign address to their respective subnets. Everything was well and good, except that I could reach 192.168.1.* systems from 192.168.2.*, but not vice versa -- anything connected to the Primary router was blind to systems connected to Secondary. Also, I could not ping anything on .2 from .1.
So, I added the following static route to the primary router:
    DESTINATION: 192.168.2.0
    NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    GATEWAY: 192.168.1.2
Once this was added to the router, I could ping everything, so that was good. However, even though .1 can now ping .2, I can't access certain things such as the web interface of my NAS (192.168.2.2). I can ping it, but accessing it in the browser from .1 doesn't work; however, accessing from .2 does work.
I think the ActionTec router might be blocking it, but that's just a guess. The firewall on this thing has me thoroughly confused. Currently, I have 192.168.1.2 in the DMZ on the ActionTec, but that didn't make a difference. I've also completely disabled the firewall on the secondary Belkin router, but still nothing.
Any help from the pros here? Much appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, I figured it out and everything is now working. The issue appears to be that the ActionTec router doesn't recognize traffic from Subnet 1 to Subnet 2 as internal traffic -- it treats it as external traffic and closes it off. To fix this, it required some Advanced Firewall Filters that were far from unituitive and took a lot of testing to get it just right. If anyone runs into a similar situation in the future, here's a rundown of what I did to make it all work:
    Primary Router:
    ActionTec, MI424WR Rev D
    WAN IP/NETMASK:Assigned by ISP
    LAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
    Secondary Router:
    Belkin N750 Gigabit w/ 802.11n
    WAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.2.1 / 255.255.255.0
Plug Secondary router's WAN port into a LAN port on the Primary router.
Setup Secondary router to have static LAN address (192.168.1.2)
At this point, you should have 2 separate subnets: Subnet 1 (192.168.1.*) and Subnet 2 (192.168.2.*).
Systems on both subnets should be able to reach the internet. Also, Subnet 2 should be able to ping and reach systems on Subnet 1; however, systems on Subnet 1 should not be able to ping or reach systems on Subnet 2. For this, we need to create a static route so Subnet 1 can reach Subnet 2.
Create and apply the following static route in the Primary router:  (Advanced > Routing)
    RULE NAME:Network (Home/Office)
    DESTINATION:192.168.2.0(your secondary subnet)
    GATEWAY:192.168.1.2(secondary router's WAN IP)
    NETMASK:255.255.255.0
    METRIC:1
The router now has a route between Subnet 1 (192.168.1.*) and Subnet 2 (192.168.2.*). You should be able to ping systems on Subnet 1 from 2, and ping systems on Subnet 2 from 1. You should not be able to access any systems, though -- the firewall is still blocking all but ping traffic from Subnet 1 to Subnet 2. We need to create some firewall rules to allow this communication.
Make sure Primary firewall is set to at least typical/medium (Firewall Settings > General).
We need to create some network objects to make it easier to manage the rules we'll create. Go to Advanced > Network Objects and do the following:
1.Click Add. You are now on Edit Network Object screen.
    2.Set Description to 'Subnet 1'.
3.In Items section below, click Add.
4.Set Network Object Type to 'IP Subnet'.
5.Set Subnet IP Address to 192.168.1.0.
    6.Set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
7.Click Apply. You are now back on Edit Network Object screen.
8.Click Apply. You are now back on Network Objects Screen.
9.Repeat the above steps again, but this time creating a second network object called 'Subnet 2':
    Nameubnet 2
    IP Subnet:192.168.2.0
    Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Now we create the firewall rules. Go to Firewall Settings > Advanced Filtering.
In the Inbound/Input rules section, click the Add link next to Network (Home/Office) Rules.
    Create the following Advanced Filter:
    SOURCE ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 1'
    DEST. ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 2'
    PROTOCOL:'Any'
    OPERATION:'Accept Packet'
    OCCUR:'Always'
Click Apply. You will now be back on the Advanced Filtering page.
In the Outbound rules section, click the Add link next to Network (Home/Office) Rules.
    Create the following Advanced Filter:
    SOURCE ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 1'
    DEST. ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 2'
    PROTOCOL:'Any'
    OPERATION:'Accept Packet'
    OCCUR:'Always'
Click Apply. You will now be back on the Advanced Filtering page.
    Click Apply.
You're all done. You should now have internet access on both subnets, be able to ping across subnets and also be able to access services across subnets (local webservers, SSH, telnet, mail, etc). You will not be able to see network file shares across subnets in Windows, however, as this requires a WINS server (which is well outside the scope of this post). For instance, I have a Western Digital NAS on the 192.168.2.0 subnet that I can access as \\Mybooklive\ from within Subnet 2; on Subnet 1, however, I have to access it by its IP \\192.168.2.10\.

  • Broadcasts between multiple routers using IP HELPER

    Hello everyone,
I newly CCNA qualified and i need some help-clarification regarding ip helper command.
A few words about the setup of the network:
The place were i work has multiple routers connected to a central router. For example I have router A and Router B. I need a PCs on the LAN segment of router A to be able to broadcast packets to a server (Domain Controller) located on the LAN of router B. I also want broadcasts from the server to travel freely to the LAN of the PC on router A. These two routers are connected with 2Mbps FR.
My configurations work, but i am not sure if i configured unnecessary commands. Can you please give me a sample configuration stating the interfaces were i need to configure IP HELPER-ADDRESS , and if i need the IP DIRECTED-BROADCAST command at all.
Also i have used IP FORWARD-PROTOCOL UDP command.
    Thank you very much,
    George

    George,
OK. You want broadcasts from PCs on LAN A to go to the servers on LAN B. I shall presume that you do not know how many PCs are on LAN B; you just want the broadcast to be seen by all of them. So, suppose the address of LAN B is 192.168.30.0/24, you should go to the interface of LAN A, and configure ip helper-address 192.168.30.255. This will forward brodcasts from LAN A to LAN B. By default, when they arrive at LAN B, the router there would try and send them to a host 192.168.30.255 - but this is not what we want. So on LAN B, you will need the command ip directed-broadcast. This will recognise the packet 192.168.30.255 as a directed broadcast, and it will make sure it gets sent as a MAC broadcast, rather than a host unicast.
In the other direction, just for illustration, I shall assume that you are only interested in passing the PC broadcasts to the specific server in LAN A, let us say 192.168.20.45. In this case, go to the interface of LAN B, and configure ip helper-address 192.168.20.45. This will see the PC broadcasts, and send them to the server on LAN A. In this case, it is not necessary to configure ip directed-broadcast on LAN A, because, it is enough to send the packets to just that server.
Of course, if you want the PC broadcasts to go to all servers in LAN A, you have two options: either you send them to 192.168.20.255 and enable directed broadcasts on LAN A, or you make a list of servers, and have an ip helper-address on LAN B for each one.
As for ip forward-protocol, it may not be necessary. There is a list of protocols that the ip helper-address command forwards by default. You only need the ip forward-protocol command if you want to deviate from the list. See doc for details:

  • Can I connect HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 to multiple routers

    Hi
I recently purchased HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 and have connected it to one wireless router.  I have 3 routers at home to cover a large area. How can I connect HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 to multiple routers?
Is giving a static IP address an only option? What are the drawbacks of using a static address, if any?

    Hello purohito,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
HP printers, in your case the Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545, can only connect to one router. If you have three routers setup in your home, to print you will need to be on the network the printer is connected with.
If these routers are setup like repeaters, then it is possible for this to work, but not supported by printer support. If you are not sure if your setup is consisting of two routers being repeaters, watch this HP video to learn more.

  • Specific Questions Multiple Routers *HELP*

I have a few specific questions regarding multiple routers in one home.
    1. Would it be possible to have (2) verizon supplied routers such as Actiontecs working in one home over Coax? to be more specific i would like one router in one room of the house connected to coax and providing hardwired/wireless. and another of the same type in a different room doing the same.
an installer told me something to the effect that there would be wireless interference between the two. my next question is if I am able to have two routers connected over coax. could I log in to one and Set Wireless to OFF? thus eliminating wireless interference? if not what would be the issue? could i use a non-verizon supplied router (which i understand there is no support for) ? could i use a Wired router?
there is no wireless coverage issue here. simply personal preference. i need the ability to hardwire systems without running cable around the house ie:cat5 from router to another room.no wireless bridges or other configurations.
these routers are excellent in features and performance and having a second would be nice.
my last resort option would be to connect the router to my GE smartconnection center that i have in my home. coax to router router to cat5e thus braodcast throughout the house depending where i choose. this is my last resort since it is a steel enclosure and would hinder wireless performance.

Check out this website. It has all the different network configurations, along with the pro's and con's of each set up.

You can also set up the wireless to adhoc mode, which will allow you to connect the second router to the first wirelessly and extend your network without running cable to the other end of the house.

  • Multiple versions of Shared Variables on same network

I have 2 seperate reactors working on the same network each deploying ~50 shared variables (different names on each process) communicating with LV 8.5RT running on FP hardware.  One of the reactors is requested for new features and to be upgraded.  Is it possible to heve 2 different shared variable engines (8.5 and 2010) and versions on the same network and client computer, or am I asking for trouble.

  • NFAS across multiple routers

Can Nfas be configured spanning multiple routers? For example, for nfas group 0, I have 4 PRIs in the group, with 2 pri in one router and 2 in another. Is this possible, or NFAS must be on the same router?

I'm afraid I need to inform you that NFAS is only supported for PRIs that reside on the same router, up to ten PRI interfaces in an NFAS group with a primary D channel and a backup D channel and five NFAS groups on a router.
