Multiple severe performance issues under Windows

I own a Macbook Pro, and have used it happily for around a year. However, the hard drive was too small (no idea why I decided to go for the 80), and my music library kept growing. At the same time, I needed a Windows machine for various other purposes, so I bought a Dell with Vista. I successfully transferred all of my music over to it, and downloaded iTunes. It installed fine, and all of my music showed up, and plays.
Here are the problems. Compared to OS X, iTunes on Windows *****. Unbelievably. It's incredibly sluggish (even basic things like scrolling through your library - smooth as silk on the Mac, but choppy on Windows. Resizing the window doesn't work well, either), and it has to have at least a few major memory leaks.
I'll give you some specifics.
Acting "Sluggish"
- Scrolling through my library (with either the scroll wheel of the mouse or the scrollbar on the right) is very choppy. This is not the case with any other application on my computer - scrolling through a list of entries is smooth and works well.
- Resizing the window frequently doesn't work. I'll grab the corner, and move the mouse over to another area. The mouse will be on a different part of the screen, but the iTunes window will not have resized at all. If I move the mouse, the window then resizes to where the mouse last was. In other words, if I want to resize the window, I have to grab the corner, drag to another size that I think I want, and then move the mouse a little to get it to go. This animation is also very choppy.
- Coverflow is very slow and moves at a very low framerate, fullscreen or otherwise.
- Oftentimes, the first keystroke (or two) will be completely ignored. So, for example, I'll hit Ctrl+L to get to the currently playing song, and have to press it 2 or 3 times in order for it to have any effect.
Memory Issues
- When I start iTunes (in the smallest window possible), it takes around 56 MB of memory, not playing anything. Once I start to play a song, it jumps a little, but ultimately doesn't change that much (now it's at 60 MB instead). I resized the window to be on most of the screen, and it's now at 66. Scrolling through my library on List View, while slow and choppy, doesn't take up any significant amount of memory. However, as soon as I change to either the "grouped with artwork" option or coverflow, bad things start happening.
- Grouped with Artwork: At the beginning, iTunes is taking up 70 MB of memory. Every time I hit Page Down, another 3-4 MB of memory is added. This memory is never released. So now, having scrolled down from the top a little, iTunes is now sitting at twice what it was at the beginning, or 145 MB. It's now taking up more memory than Firefox.
- Coverflow: Starting out at 145 MB from the earlier view, switching to coverflow immediately makes the memory jump to 170 MB. When I scroll through the albums, the memory then jumps anywhere from 40 - 50 MB. After a bit of clicking, iTunes is now taking up 1,106 MB of memory.
I minimize iTunes, and 1 MB of memory is freed. iTunes is now at 1,105 MB.
Moving out of CoverFlow view does a good job at cutting some memory use, but it's still at 540 MB. And at this point, I'm back to where I started (in terms of what iTune's doing: list mode, small window, not playing), only at 9 times the memory use. As far as I know, there's no way to reclaim that memory.
Various Issues
- iTunes will frequently disregard the first or even second keystroke, as mentioned above.
- This scenario is a little harder to describe, but I'll do my best. iTunes is the foremost application. The focus is on song panel (the main part), so that pressing the Up and Down arrow keys cause the "currently selected" blue background thing behind a song to move up or down, enter plays the currently selected song, etc. I Alt-Tab to another application, and then Alt-Tab back. It looks like I'm in the same situation as before (the currently selected song is blue, instead of grey), but the up and down keystrokes do nothing. I'm apparently in a different section of iTunes. Pressing Tab brings me to the left panel of iTunes - the Music / Movies / Podcasts / Ringtones / etc. part, but the up and down keys don't do anything there either. Tabbing again takes me to the search field, and that works. And tabbing once more brings me back to where I should have been as soon as I Alt-Tabbed back to iTunes.
- A variant situation: focus is as described at the beginning, and I Alt-Tab out and back into iTunes. Again, the up and down keys don't work, but then if I press Shift + Tab (to go to the previous field), it starts working again.
This issue is much more of a pain than it sounds. If I'm in iTunes, and I'm chatting online, for example, I might need to switch out quickly to type a line in, and then switch back, but the workflow has been completely disrupted because I can't navigate with the keyboard anymore.
- When editing a song title in iTunes, I select it first, and then press F2. This causes the title to become a "rename" field, which works mostly fine. With one exception. Generally, in these fields, you edit the title to your heart's desire, and then press Enter to signify that you are done. However, in iTunes, if I have a song title "blowin' in the wind", and I want to capitalize it, I'll hit F2, and then move the cursor over to the beginning of the title (in other words, to right before the "b"). My goal is to delete the lowercase b, and replace it with an uppercase B. So I press Delete, and then type B. However, as soon as I press the Delete key, iTunes deletes the character, and then closes the rename field. It's as though I pressed Delete and then Enter. If I then type B, I'm taken the first song starting with a B, which is not what I want at all.
- iTunes doesn't work with Vista's window preview (Aero interface, Alt+Tab or hovering over the program in the tray at the bottom) when it's minimized.
- When I have iTunes on in the background, and plug in an iPod, it all works fine, except for when I bring the window up. For whatever reason, iTunes doesn't repaint the window right at all. It's a horrific mixture of whatever songs were in the list view before and the iPod options.
I'm sure I have more issues, but those are the ones that come to the top of my head. Note that I have none of these problems in iTunes on the Mac.
Apple, if you're going to release software for Windows, please make it work.

Windows is the lowest performing host for GroupWise, so that is a part
of what you are hitting.
How are you monitoring memory usage? I've found that the vCenter tools
aren't a good indicator of that, where as the Windows tools are better
in that respect. The biggy is that you don't want much paging to disk.
How much do you have assigned to this VM?, how many cores? And are
these ESX box(es) over committed on those two?
Those settings on their own don't really mean a whole lot. What we need
to see is what is actually being used, and if you are running out of
them, then upping those specific numbers can help. The best way is to
watch the POA web interface for the relevant settings.

Hello - we are running GW 8.02 hp3 and recently moved our main post office (~600 users) from Netware to Windows 2008 R2 (running under Vsphere 4.1).
We have started seeing intermittent slow performance issues esp. when moving a message from one folder to another, or sending a broadcast email.
It doesn't appear to be a hardware resource issue: disk queues don't exceed 1, with low latency (7-15ms) and we're not cpu or memory bound (that I can see).
Here are our current config settings:
    Message Worker Threads: 15
    Maximum GWCheck Worker Threads: 8
    C/S Handler Threads: 30
    Max Physical: 2048
    Max App Connections: 4084
    Soap Threads: 20
We don't see any serious errors in the logs when performance becomes slow. Could this just be a tuning issue?

  • Skype Performance Bug under Windows 8 x64 / endles...

    Dear Developers,
please get rid of an annoying bug under Windows 8 x64 - this bug exists since several versions and still not fixed.
    Summary:
After a while - maybe associated with energy saving options - a thread in Skype is getting more and more CPU time, causes by a thread always starts with ntdll!RtlGetCurrentPeb+0xf (see att.) <- what does this thread actually?
    Results:
Heavy CPU usage, slowly Skype response - missing Messages. Only Skype restarts helps.
I will do more investigation if needed. Let me know.
    Update:
    The thread uninterruptedly reads from
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\*
Appears to a not catched endless loop?

My Thinkpad originally came with Windows 7 Pro, but I have changed to Windows 8 in order to resolve problems with VSS.  OOB, both Windows 7 and Windows 8 gave me a "Desktop graphics performance" rating of 5.7.  Under Windows 7, upgrading to the latest Lenovo driver improved this to 6.1, leaving my HDD (at 5.9) as the limiting factor in performance.  Under Windows 8, however, replacing the Windows driver with the latest Lenovo driver has reduced "Desktop graphics performance" to 5.6!  What gives?
P.S. I just discovered a Power Options advanced power setting "Intel Graphics Power Plan", which was set to "Maximum Battery Life" for both battery and plugged in.  I changed it to "Maximum Performance" when plugged in, but the Windows experience Index (WEI) for "Desktop graphics performance" remains a mer 5.8.
After you changed the setting to "Maximum Performance" , did you run the WEI test again?

  • Oracle Apps Database severe Performance Issue

    Hi Gurus,
This is regarding a severe performance issue running in our Production E-Business Suite Instance.
its an R12.1.3 setup installed with 11.2.0.1 Database. All the servers are Solaris Sparc 64 (Solaris 10)
Let me brief you about the instance first:
    2 Node Application
    - Main Application Server hosting web/forms/concurrent/admin servers
    - iSupplier server hosting web services (placed in DMZ, used by external suppliers via Internet)
    1 Node Database Server
    Database Server Specs
Memory: 144G phys mem 20G total swap
    - CPUs (8Px4cores, 2Px2cores)
    - I/O - fiber channel hard disk (hitachi SAN Storage) - 7 DATA_TOPs (7 drives with RAID 5) - current DB size 1.6 TB
    - at peak load, around 1000 concurrent forms session and 2000 web sessions.
We have been facing some serious performance issues and we raised an SR with Oracle Support.
The Support analyzed a bunch of AWR Reports we provided them and they asked us to increase the DB_CACHE from its current usage of 27G to 40G
So, we changed SGA_TARGET from 35G to 50G and PGA was increased from 35G to 40G as v$pgastat was also suggesting some lack of memory.
We made these changes last night.
Today morning we observed the following:
    1. after start of office hours, we checked in the home page of EM DB Console that ADDM was showing reduced impact due to lack of SGA memory which seemed to be a good sign. Earlier it was around 25% which was now at 12%.
    However, negative aspects were:
    1. lot of swapping was reported by the System Administrators on the DB Server
    2. High CPU Usage
    3. EM DB Console showed a lot of "Concurrency Wait Class" events ...throughout the day lot of blocking sessions were reported which were making other sessions to wait.
in the AWR Report, following foreground reports were listed:

This is showing "library cache lock" events as the main culprit apart from the usual suspect, the CPU.
I am attaching the AWR Report. Please let me know if  i should revert back the memory changes or is there anything else i could do.
Please help us resolving it because the performance is going worst.
    Regards,
    Muneer.

  • Severe performance issues in production database

    Hi Experts,
we have configured RMAN in our production database recently using some 3 party tool COMMVAULT.
Problem is just 47 GB database taking around 6 hrs of time to complted the bakcup job. Please let me know what could be the reason.
Further to this issues i found out some of few things, our application vendor commissioned this database server and it seems that they done some changes in TIMEZONE settings.
when i query against some of few dictionary tables for example dba_schedular_jobs i am getting the following error.
ORA-01882: timezone region %s not found
when ever i connect the database , the connection itself is very slow and suffering severe performance issues in my production database.
You help would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Salai

    Hi,
also let us know if you use asm or local file system for datafiles.
Your backup strategy will also be helpful:
    Do you make compressed backups?
    Full or incremental?
To where do you backup the database? To the local filesystem, SAN Volume, Offsite Storage, Tape storage?
Is there any other jobs running while the RMAN job is running?
Please post the stats that you have gathered over the time period when the backup is running.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Elements 9 crashes with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards under Windows 7

I've just installed Premiere Elements 9 and found that it will not run at all with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards active under Windows 7.  Per all the other discussions, I updated the NVIDIA drivers and Quicktime support to the latest versions.  (NVIDIA version 260.99).  I have both a 9400 GT and an 8400 GS installed, to support multiple monitors.  They both use the same driver.  The PRE 9 organizer will run, but as soon as I create or load a project it quickly crashes.
On a long shot I disabled the 8400 GS card in the Device Manager and now I can run PRE 9.  Of course this means giving up one of my monitors.  Any other ideas?

Over in the Premiere Pro area (or maybe it was in the Hardware section... didn't pay a lot of attention 'cause it really didn't matter to me) I read a message about using two nVidia cards with no problems (other than no dual-card SLI support)
I **think** that was with two SAME model nVidia cards
And, of course, PPro is completely different code, so PreEl may simply not work with two nVidia cards

  • MacBook Pro sound issues under Windows 7

    Gentlemen.
I have been having a couple of problems with the sound input/output on my MBP under Windows 7
I have noticed that the volume levels that I get under Windows 7 on my MBP are much lower than what I get on OS X, making it hard to hear what is occurring in game without the use of headphones.
Also, the microphone does not seem to work under Windows 7, it is seen as being there and enabled, but does not pick up sound, again, this is not an issue in OS X.
I have managed to fix the mic once before, but since I re-imaged Windows 7 on the computer I cannot remember how I managed it.
Has anyone else come across this? and more importantly, anyone got a fix for it?

I agree. In fact, I have been using VM Ware Fusion 3 for Windows 7 too. Having tried Parallels Desktop 5, I can tell you that VM Ware Fusion 3 is much better. I have found Fusion to be so much cleaner on my system. Parallels Desktop 5 feels like it has been butchered together. This has just been my own experience.

  • Adobe Reader 9 - multiple instances performance issue

Dear all, I am having some performance issues regarding adobe reader, but only when running multiple instances. Opening a single, relatively small pdf ( 418kb ) works perfect, but adding to the list of open flies another very small file ( 102kb ), the cpu usage jumps to cca. 53% mouse movements become jumpy and the cooling fan goes nuts. Nothing helps until the second file I've opened is closed. Closing only the first instance doesn't help at all.
This happens with any two files I've tried. Large, small, graphics or not. Hardware is not the issue.
    Any ideas?
    Kind regards,

  • Bug:  Holding slider in Photoshop CS3 color selection dialog causes issues under Windows 7

I was using the color selection dialog this morning and discovered that clicking and holding the vertical slider or the little arrows for about three or four seconds causes Windows 7 to declare Photoshop CS3 as being unresponsive.  The whole Photoshop UI starts freaking out at that point:  The color selection dialog "vanishes" and black bars start appearing all across the application.  Minimizing and then showing the application restores it to its previous state.

You're welcome.  Glad to hear the driver update corrected the issue for you.

I just got it, having previously used a 4670.  The 5670 is not hugely fast in the benchmarks, probably not much faster than yours, but it animates everything in Photoshop perfectly smoothly (Photoshop is far less demanding than most games).  I am most fond of the fact that the 5670 draws so little power it doesn't need an extra power connection over and above what it gets from the PCIe buss, and so it runs cool and quiet.

  • 9i performance issues in windows 2000

I have imported the database from 8.0.5 to 9i recently and have been facing performance degradation although 9i is running in a better server with more memory and processor speed.
The same application, use to run more efficiently with lesser db_block_buffers & shared_pool parameters.
I have modified various parameters recommended to run 9i on win 2000 but still there is no great improvement.
One of the key area where I suspect the problem could be is, I see more wait in control file parallel writes/reads events.
Can someone help me out on this. Also it will be more useful if someone can help me to find a document to optimize win 2000 for 9i.
    Thanks

Did you reanalyze all your objects using a large sample size?
With every upgrade a few queries could change plans and the plan changes are not always for the best. Just one or two poorly performing queries could adversely affect the entire system.
Have you reviewed your physical and logical IO hog lists to be sure that you just do not need to tune a couple of queries.
Remember also that at least 6 common init.ora parameters affect CBO choices and you should look very carefully at any changes made to the init.ora (db_file_multiblock_read_count, sort_area_size, hash_join_enabled, optimizer_index_caching, optimizer_index_cost_adj)
Finally a big part of overall database performance is disk layout and performance. Even with a faster cpu and more memory if your reduced the number of spindals available to support your db activity you could have shot yourself in the foot (so to speak).

  • Performance issue under GPU rendering

Hi, this is my first post :-)
I'm trying to create an app for the New iPad that has a ton of high resolution bitmaps. GPU rendering does a great job at making panning/zooming smooth, however there is always a pretty annoying delay when an image is added to the stage for the first time. After an image has been removed from the stage, adding it right back is smooth, but not after the garbage collector has removed it from the memory. This is weird because it only happens when GPU rendering is enabled... Does anyone know a fix for this issue? Would it be possible to load all the images at once and keep the garbage collector from removing them?

Thanks Chris, I (partially) figured out what the problem was: it didn't actually have anything to do with the garbage collector... it was just the iPad's GPU going into idle mode every 5-7 seconds of inactivity. I did a minor "hack" to solve the issue: since all of my graphics were inside of a container sprite, i wrote a little keepalive method that sets the visibility of the container to false and then immediately back to true every 5 seconds; that got rid of the annoying stutter coming out of idle, but I still have no idea how to avoid the delay when a bitmap is added for the first time.

  • Mac Pro 3D Severe Graphics Issue

    Greetings to all.
I currently own a Quad 2.66ghz Mac Pro with 5GB of RAM and an X1900 (512MB) ATI Graphics Card.
A while ago, I started having an issue with most 3D applications under Bootcamp. I'm using the Bootcamp 2.1 driver set and reformatting the machine had no effect on this issue.
The problem is that certain 3D games run slow.
By slow, I don't mean poor graphical performance or a lack of frames-per-second, I mean slow as in "time has slown down". The graphic performance is excellent and I'm getting high FPS as usual- but the game itself is running at maybe 50-75% of the speed it should be.
    For example...
If I'm playing any VALVe game (such as Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, Portal, etc)- all the game animations run at 75% of the speed they should. The graphics are fine- smooth with high FPS. However, my "character" moves at approximately half-speed in the game world. If I'm playing online with other people- from their point of view, I'm playing the game in slowmo. Everything for /them/ is fine, but my "character" is literally jumping, walking, etc half-speed.
If I'm playing Spore, then the introduction video when you start the game (where it says "EA" then explodes into the galaxy) is all jerky. My space ship "moves" (in the game) at approximately half the speed it should, and again, all the game animations are smooth with high FPS- but everything is moving in slow motion.
If I reboot the machine- anywhere from 3-7 times, the problem will eventually go away and the games resume their "normal" speeds. So I can tell instantly when the computer is screwed up- because Spore's intro video will playback smooth when everything is "working" and the game speed is normal (so my ship travels through space quit a bit faster, and the graphical animations aren't off sync with the audio). It's the same thing with VALVe games- I can tell when the computer is working because the character animations are running at normal speeds versus "slowmo".
I am unsure what is causing this but it is extremely annoying. I reformatted the entire Windows XP installation, no effect. I simply noticed it one day (about a month ago), prior to that the problem didn't exist.
Since this effects multiple games and the graphics performance is NOT an issue, I'm lead to believe that there's some sort of driver bug here at work, or some sort of issue with the Mac Pro's internal timer or something.
Has anyone else experienced this "warped 3D time" situation? Does anyone have a solution?

We're talking Windows in general. My advice, get 64-bit Vista Ultimate.
Why would I spend money on a new OS, when XP x86 (and I have XP x64- I'd sooner throw that on then deal with Vista) works? Save for this issue, it's 100% stable, and pretty much every current game on the market and most future games are 32-bit only and don't rely on Direct X 10 exclusively.
X1900 seems okay, but maybe not. Something is a bottleneck and not sure where and reinstalling ATI graphics driver hasn't helped? BootCamp 2.1 is just a bunch of low level HAL support services.
There is no bottleneck. You misread my issue.
The 3D graphics are perfectly fine. The X1900 performs to my expectations in every single game I own. The frame rate is high in every single game. The issue is that "time" itself seems to slow down, even though the framerate *remains the same*.
This is some sort of weird software bug or timer issue. Performance wise, the system is fine.
The official ATI drivers had no impact on the issue. The issue originally started when I was running XP x86 and Bootcamp 2.0 drivers. I upgraded those to the official ATI Catalyst drivers, which made no difference. I reformatted the entire machine- and installed the Bootcamp 2.1 drivers. No effect.
And let's hope you put Windows on its own dedicated disk drive, and not the poor man of the lot, try putting it on an nice $78 WD Caviar 640 or something.
I didn't even use Bootcamp (the utility). I have 4 500GB drives, 3 of which are dedicated to OS X. I removed those three, leaving in only the forth, and formatted the entire drive as a MBR partition map with an NTFS primary partition. Therefore, the forth drive is 100% Windows and nothing else.
You could run chkdsk and system file checker (sfc /scannow) as well as make sure you aren't low on disk space...
Disk is fine. ~300GB free space.
What would you do to improve performance?
Nothing at all. As I've said before, *performance is fine*. Framerates are good. Most games I can crank to 1920x1200 at high settings (sans Crysis). Spore looks and runs fine. VALVe games look incredible.
The issue has nothing to do with performance. As I've said, it's that the "game time" is running slow. The framerate is fine. Since this has nothing to do with the load of the machine (time should be a constant), it is some sort of obscure firmware, software, or hardware bug. This effects both Spore and Valve games (and others?). In both cases, "game time" and animations run in slow motion. They are NOT jerky or suffer from any performance related issues on the X1900. They're just running in slow motion.
Rebooting a few times clears the issue. Performance stays the same, but game-time resumes it's normal pace.
Buy a PC video card can work, or 8800GT, or hope the Radeon 3870, but with both of those, on 1st gen Mac Pro, you are better off with Vista.
Again, why? My X1900 may be loud, but it flies. I am happy with this machine. I keep it clean, and it keeps running stable for me as a result. Except for this issue under Windows XP 32 with game time running slow-mo, I have no quirks with this machine.
And in case you haven't already check Barefeats, take a peek:
I know how much faster the other cards are, but I don't do that much gaming. When I do, it's annoying to have to reboot several times to get "Game time" to run at "normal" speeds (as per above). I plan on updating to an 8x in the /future/, but I don't have the money to do that right now.
