Music shows/plays in itunes but is missing in explorer folder

Itunes runs perfectly (knock on wood). However when I go to my library folder in explorer there are no music files there. Just three folders (Compilations, Itunes, Sample Music). Everything in the Itunes folder looks like system files. Where are all my music files??

yes, I dony know what else to do?
thanks

  • Music video plays in itunes but not on ipod

    hi
like my subject line states, i transferred a whole bunch of music videos off of dvd into mp4 format using videora.
they play in itunes but not on my ipod.
i transferred about 400 or so at the same time to ipod do you think that's why most of them won't play ?
should i do it one by one ?
    thanks.

it's more than just the mp4 format. They need to be encoded correctly with the right dimensions and other attributes as well. I don't bother with this sort of thing right now. If there is anyone who has these specs, just post them here. Otherwise, you can always google them or search these boards for the proper format/size/encoding.

  • Music shows up in iTunes but not on the iPod

I'm not sure what to do next. One of the CDs I had on my iPod just disappeared the other night. I thought it might have been my deck in my car, so I unplugged it and then searched on the iPod itself for the CD, and it didn't show up there either. So I came home and I connected the iPod to my computer and in iTunes, I clicked on the iPod, and it said the CD was there. So I unplugged it and checked on my iPod again, and the CD still wasn't showing up. I reconnected it to the computer and checked it AGAIN in iTunes and it still said that the CD was on my iPod. I reset it with the center button and menu, and then I checked it again and on my iPod it wasn't there, but it still showed up in iTunes as being on my iPod. So I deleted them off of the iPod, reburnt the CD, put the files onto the iPod, and in iTunes it said the songs were on the iPod. So I checked it on the actual iPod, and they weren't there! I updated the software and everything and tried it again, but it still didn't fix the problem. It's just one CD I'm having trouble with, everything else works fine, and back when the CD showed up in my iPod it played fine. Any suggestions?

hmmmmm. we'd better quickly check to see if you're getting a Windows drive letter confusion. for troubleshooting advice on that one, see:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Tv shows play in iTunes but not on iPod.

iPod and PowerBook software all up to date. Tv shows play fine in iTunes. When I try to play them on the iPod, the screen goes dark and a "play button" sysmbol appears (a triangle pointing to the right, in the upper left corner). Nothing happens and it quits trying after a few moment.
I emailed support and heard nothing back. These are my first iTunes store purchases and I'm not impressed. Bought a whole season of a show and all the episodes do this.
    Grr.

  • ITunes music will play on iTunes but will not play in my iPod

I downloaded music from iTunes. It plays on my computer and shows up on my iPod. However, it will not play. When I attempt to play the iPod says "now playing" skipping all 25 tracks. The music is in the purchased, artist, music, etc. folders.
    Any thoughts?

  • My itunes will not let me download the music that I purchased on my phone to itunes. So the music show up in itunes but when I go to download it the songs and the download symbol are grayed out. How do I fix this?

I want to upgrade my phone to the new software and it says that I have purchases from my phone not added to my itunes library, so when I go to the songs they are all grayed out and I cannot download. So please help me.

Best route would be to shutdown the computer and restart from cold.
Make a secure backup of your Songs.
    Uninstall iTunes.
Install the latest version of iTunes.

Have you selected manually manage music?

  • Music plays in iTunes, but NONE of the MP3 files are visible in Explorer

This one is a bit of a mystery.
When I open up any of the folders in my iTunes Music folder, they appear to be empty. No MP3 files are listed at all. Yet, iTunes can still play the music.
    Here are the details:
    1. I keep my iTunes media content on an external hard drive, and iTunes is working fine. Some albums have disappeared but most of my music shows up in iTunes and plays properly. Therefore, the music files have to be there.
    2. When I right-click on my iTunes folder in Windows Explorer and choose "properties" I get a result: Explorer scans the folder and tells me I have 98.8 gigabytes in 18,279 files, (though when I look around, I see that a LOT of albums are missing). Yet, Windows Explorer is finding a lot of files even though I can’t see them.
    3. However, when I right-click on a folder inside my iTunes folder and choose “properties” (the folders for each artist and for each album are still there and still visible) I get weird results. It says that there is some small amount of data in each folder (27 kilobytes or 35 kilobytes) and some random number of files (2, or 5, or 6). It doesn't matter how many songs are actually on that album, it just gives me this small unrelated number. Yet, I can’t see any files listed at all.
    4. Under the View tab in Folder Options, everything looks fine to me. I don’t see a setting there that would hide MP3 files.
    5. I tried checking “show hidden files” and all that sort of thing, but nothing changed.
    6. I did a virus scan and it revealed no threats.
    7. I also went into the Command Prompt and used the dir command to see what was there. I could see all of my folders including my iTunes music folder. I have pictures, Word documents, Excel files, etc on this external folder as well. I can see all of these files no problem. I can also see all the Artist and Album folders in my iTunes music folder. However, even using the dir command, I can’t see any songs – there are no MP3 files visible. I reveal hidden and system files (dir /ah), I then see some files like these:
    desktop.ini
    AlbumArtSmall.jpg
    Folder.jpg
    8. I tried to play the music from VLC media player and Windows Media Player, but that doesn’t work because the files can’t be seen by those programs either.
    9. However, when I open iTunes, all the music is there and playable. Only iTunes sees the music.
Anyone have any idea what could have happened? The one thing I changed recently is that I ran the iTunes Genius function. It scanned my music and did what it was supposed to do, and it worked fine. I doubt that Genius could have done this to my external hard drive. I’m guessing I picked up a computer virus somehow, but my virus scan doesn’t reveal anything.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?
    Thanks!
    Doug

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!
You were absolutely right, Rob. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I've got nearly 200 Artist folders with 1,000 or so Album folders - and they are all completely empty of music.
But in the middle of that long list of folders, there is an innocuous looking folder labelled "Music." I looked inside that folder and, bam, there they were - all 92 gigabytes of my missing music files in a complete copy of all those Artist and Album folders.
I thought I was going crazy! How could iTunes be playing all this music when as far as I could tell, it had all vanished? But there it was. As you said, iTunes had simply moved it down a level in the folder hierarchy and then didn't delete all the original folders.
And as I scanned the original list of Artist folders, I also saw the other folders: Podcasts, Audiobooks, iPod Games, etc. I hadn't even noticed them before. I just assumed that all the folders I was looking at were Artist folders.
Thank you so much, Rob. I'm not sure I would have ever solved this "case of the missing music files" on my own. I would have continued to bang my head against "hidden files" settings and all that. Perhaps I would have tracked these files down by looking for their location using "Get Info" in iTunes. But maybe not. I had no reason to suspect that I didn't know where the music files were: after all, the Artist and Album folders were all right there. They were just empty! I was so focused on the folders being empty, it never occured to me that iTunes had created exact duplicate folders somewhere else.
Do you know if iTunes had any practical reason for leaving all those empty folders behind? I'm just wondering if it is safe to manually delete them. I noticed, for example, that they aren't completely empty. They contain hidden files of Album Art and various ini files. I wouldn't want to delete them and then find out that I just deleted all my album art and a bunch of important settings files.
Thanks again. You saved my neck with this one.

  • Video plays in iTunes, but won't show on ipod

I'm a first time poster since I'm usually able to figure out what to do by looking in the archives first. However I haven't seen this yet. I successfully converted some home video and imported them into iTunes. Here's the kicker...only one of the movies loaded to my ipod. I have the options on my ipod set to automatically update so I'm not sure why only one would load.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If your movies play in iTunes but not on iPod... right-click the video file in your iTunes Library and click "Convert Selection for iPod" this will convert your movie to the proper format that iPod can handle.
    Hope I helped.

  • After ios 5 the ipod that changed to music shows all my songs but they are greyed out and will not play

after ios 5 the ipod that changed to music shows all my songs but they are greyed out and will not play

did uncheck all music and resynced afterwards. Got all my music back on the phone. Next morning, the phone had greyed out 1/3 of the songs all by itself. Seems to have something to do with syncing over wifi. No solution yet other than resyncing all my playlists one by one,
Combined with a battery that drained 5% every 5 minute before I reset the network settings, I am not impressed with Apple's premature launch of their new os. This is what beta testing is for, folks. The iPhone should be done with the growing pains. Shame.

  • External hard drive showing up in iTunes but tracks are not...

    Hi,
I've read a bunch of the posts about running iTunes off an external hard drive but haven't had any luck getting my set up to work... I have an LG netbook, Western Digital 2 TB ethernet hard drive, the latest version of iTunes (updated yesterday)... Ideally I'd like to keep all of my iTunes stuff on the hard drive and access it through my netbook, iTouch, phone etc...
I followed Apple's instructions for moving iTunes to another drive - I consolidated the files, checked the box for keeping the files organized, changed the location for iTunes Media folder location to my external hard drive (when I 'Get Info' for the tracks iTunes it shows them in the external hard drive), then deleted the original iTunes Media folder... My Book Live shows up in iTunes, but does not list any tracks... I moved all of my iTunes (tv, music, ringtones, etc) to a folder I created in the external hard drive called iTunes... I did move the music from the iTunes folder to the Shared Music folder on the external hard drive, but neither location shows the tracks in iTunes...
Am I missing a step? I'm not great with computers in case that wasn't obvious But the instructions were clear and I had no problems going through them so I'm not sure what the problem could be...
Thanks for any help or tips you can offer

Okay, I run off my Ext HD all the time... I have had a couple minor problems trying to get multiple machines to use the same ext HD & iTunes library... but that's another story. LOL Maybe I just want too much. giggle Greedy me... I want my music everywhere and not always on my iPod. <g>
I'll keep working on that... Anyhooo... I can address YOUR problem at least. Cuz, I think I know what you may have done wrong. Although the library of music (i.e. all the music files) are stored on the external hard drive, iTunes will still use the iTunes LIBRARY files (i.e. the files that list what is stored where and data and junk) that are on your computer's main hard drive. So, if you deleted those files in your iTunes folder when you say you deleted the iTunes media files on your main hard drive... you may have killed its ability to find, identify and play all those files out on your external hard drive.
You should still have a number of files like:
    Sentinel
    PPTThumbs
    ITunesMusicLibrary
    ITunesLibraryGenius
    ITunesLibraryExtras
ITunesLibrary <-key one... tells it names of all your music & where files are
ITunesPreferences <-key one... tells it where you told it you stored your library
    lots of weird .tmp files
    Hope this helps
