Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.

Living on a acerage outside of the city, we have a weak internet signal. It takes days to download a movie from iTunes. Will using the new Airport actually improve our internet, or are we limited to the poor incoming internet connection?

There is no modem in the Airport router. You cannot use it alone. You must have a modem and the speed will be set by the type of broadband, and factors like distance.
Ring your ISP and ask if there is any way to get a faster connection.
Often 3G/4G wireless will be faster than adsl but will cost many times more.

Not experianced in networking. Current working setup is wireless network with airport extreme. Having problems with signal so may need to expand network with another airport. My house has a wired ethernet to most rooms. What is the best approach to maintain wireless network and also use ethernet wired connections where convienient?

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.

Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.

1st generation time capsule won't act as base station.

Yesterday I bought a used 1st generation Time Capsule (TC). I expected that it would operate as a "base station" and replace my Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) (in addition to it's primary function of acting as a repository for Time Machine back-ups).
But, try as I might, if I remove the AEBS from the chain the TC doesn't act as a Wi-Fi base station.
It all works just fine with both hooked together like this---FIOS/Motorola modem into the WAN port of the AEBS and an ethernet cable from AEBS (LAN) to TC (LAN).
For simplicity sake I'd like to get rid of the AEBS but once I remove it from the chain my Wi-Fi goes away (and yes I change the modem link to the WAN of the TC).
Finally, if I have to use both can I stack them or is there too much heat build up?

The Gen1 TC is not simultaneous dual band.. Your AEBS if later model might be.
Did you power cycle the modem as well?
Did you factory reset the TC?
Plug an ethernet cable to the TC from a computer and do the setup in complete isolation to the network.. then power on the modem and see if the tc can pick up the public IP.. if it does then it should be possible to get wireless working.
But I would note.. Gen1 TC is working on borrowed time unless the power supply has been fixed or replaced.
Do not stack ever.. the TC is already over hot.. they can sit pretty close.. or you can stack in a set of wire intrays for instance.. but leave a few cm between them for air circulation... or even wall mount.

Can you stream Music, Movies ect to your Ipad 3?And does it work to connect Ipad 3 to Time capsule?

1. First generation TC has wireless.. yes. but not dual band simultaneous.. you pick either 2.4 or 5ghz.
2. A TC can store files.. it is too dumb to stream them.. if your device can pick up the file and play it, fine.. but the TC has no media server.
3. TC can store files.. no apps. It has no low level access to the firmware.
You misunderstand if you think TC is anything other than a target for time machine. It offers AFP and SMB.. and nought else.

TC first gen was not simultaneous dual band. So.. it's probably best to factory reset your extreme and then tell it to extend again.

The 1st generation Time Capsule is an 802.11"n" wireless router, but in default settings it produces a signal that is also compatible with "g" and "b" wireless devices.
If your HomeHub is in close proximity to the Time Capsule and it is also producing a wireless network, either the wireless on the HomeHub or the TIme Capsule should be be disabled to minimize the chances of wireless interference.
Interference may also be coming from any cordless phones you may have, or another nearby wireless network as well.

How do I get a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network?

OK, I've searched the groups but no luck. Here's my situation;
I'd like to configure a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network ideally with a printer attached to the USB. My set up is an iMac running 10.9.3, Airport Utility 6.3.2 and a 1st Generation TC with the latest firmware (7.6.4). I'm trying to connect it to an ADSL Wifi Modem/Router. I know a cabled connection would give better performance but want a wifi only connection as the printer is in a different room.
I've disabled the network functions (bridge mode) but I can only see wireless options to Create a Wireless Network, Extend a Wireless Network or Off, not to Join. If I try to extend I get the option to add an SSID, security & passwords but it doesn't seem like parameters to join -the drop-down doesn't list available networks to join & manually entering the main wifi network and password doesn't work.
Is my desired config even possible?

Something.....a Mac or PC will need to have a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed on the computer.
Perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule by powering it off for a few minutes. Then, hold in the reset button first and keep holding for an additional 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Time Capsule. Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open up AirPort Utility on the computer, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to type in a device name and password that you want to use for the Time Capsule, set Time Zone, etc.
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab
Hold down the option or Alt key while you click on the Wireless Mode setting box
Select the Join a wireless network setting
Select the name of the wireless network
Enter the password for the wireless network
Verify the password
Click Update to save the settings
Note....everything here assumes that the router that provides the wireless network is using WPA2 Personal security, which is the default setting for the Time Capsule.

1st Generation Time Capsule reset button broke

Hello everyone I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule 500gb that I purchased used and do not have the password for AND
the reset button is BROKEN!!!
Is there anyway to reset it without the rest button working??
I bought it to upgrade it to a 2TB drive that i already own .

When you open the TC to replace the hard disk you will be able to press the reset. You might also be able to fix the reset lever arm.. I have found them simply forced so far back it was bent.. and no longer able to go back.. once inside the box, I can bend it back to the correct position.. but it is a plastic hinge.. and no plastic hinge likes being bent at any time.. If it has snapped right off, or snaps off attempting repair don't worry about it.. once reset, just keep it at default or write the password on a sticker and place it on the bottom.

Please pay attention though to Bob's comments.. fixing the power supply is going to be necessary in the near future. Especially if you put in a large drive with high start current for the hard disk. There are lots of people who find the upgrade of the hard disk is closely followed by power supply failure or it won't even start the new hard disk.. depending on type and current demand. It is much much more for some disks even if the drive has lower consumption.
If you are a DIYer it is not expensive to fix power supply or better replace it.
Although I have suggested several repair methods this is probably the cheapest.

Yes, using the Timed Access feature in AirPort Utility, you can setup specific rules for each wireless device which define the exact timeframe each day that the device will be allowed to connect to the wireless network.
Example....junior's iPhone can connect.....
Everyday......Between.....9 AM and 10:00 PM
or
Weekdays.......Between......4 PM and 9 PM
and Weekends.....Between......9 AM and 11 PM
At the same time, your own personal devices will have Unlimited Access at all times.

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

That it is still working is miraclous.. most have died.. lots started flaking out at 18months to 2years..
