My computer is slow
The Internet (among other things) is slow. When I try to open a page I see the colorful volleyball turning and turning for 1 minute, sometimes 2-3 minutes before it opens the page. (Although I have now for the last 8 months Cable Road Runner Basic with Time Warner.)
I thought it's related to not having enough disk space : I had that problem when I was using my small original drive and only 400MB of free space, even sometimes with zero available. (I know, I know, but I wasn't ready yet to install the new drive) then I made space and it was better. But now I have another drive with 50GB in the first partition (250 GB total) and I still have the problem, so it can't be "not enough space" !
1) I thought perhaps not enough RAM ? (I have 320 MB). But I have that also when I'm using Text Edit, so it's not limited to the Internet and how much space/memory does TextEdit need ? not much I'm sure.
This went on for a long time, weeks, months until I finally installed the new drive. And the problem is still there. For weeks now.
I cleared the cache a few days ago and it was wonderful ! Everything was fast, smooth. I was so excited I wanted to post a message saying "If you ever have a problem of speed or pointer not responding, just clear the cache it takes 5 seconds and the results are impressive !" Well...too good top be true : it lasted a few days then it's the same again.
2) I thought perhaps it's the version I have (OS 10.4.7) ? I needed to upgrade to 10.4.8 anyway (minimum requirement to use my DVD burner) but on the Apple page they offer the combo to upgrade any OS X to OS X 10.4.10. So I did it. Big, big, mistake. Now everything is worse !! I cleared the cache again but this time no results.
3) Is it possible that upgrading directly from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 is not as good as upgrading slowly, incrementally to 10.4.8, then 10.4.9 etc ?
4) Are some version of OS X known to be better than others ?
I need 10.4.8 and might stay with it (even if there's now a 10.4.11)
5) Although I have now 10.4.10 my Safari is still the same 2.0.4 (and I know there is a newer version). Since Safari is part of OS X, wouldn't an upgrade ..upgrade everything ?

i seem to be having a similar problem..
except.... mine began as soon as i DID the updates for my Mac Book Pro.
since then, both Safari & my firefox browsers (especially) are slow, and sometimes not pulling the website up AT ALL. applications take longer to start up... if at all.
i have cleared the cache, it made it WORSE!!
i'm not happy with this update i did at all.
i wish i could just go back to the way it was before i did the update.

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes. The color wheel comes on and My work stops. I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot. I have to shut the computer down the hard way! when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow. I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix. It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything. My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them. I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem. I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing! Any ideas?
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues... open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect: Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips -

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.
The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.
I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.
Good Luck! -
I purchased Mountain Lion around a month and a half ago. Since then, my computer has slowed considerably--like i could go get a cup of coffee while the page loads like old-school. Does anyone out there have any suggestions how to fix this?
How much RAM? How much available disk space?
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours. -
I am having issues related to storage and I believe this is causing my computer to slow down. "Other" files part is the major occupier(180 GB). I have done Omni disk and multiple other cleaning(iTunes-device, restart, etc), yet have not been able to empty any more space, nor to speed up my computer? Any suggestions? All your contributions are welcomed. Thanks. Mehmet Mazhar Celikoyar

If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience. -
How come, ever since I installed Mountain Lion, my computer is slower???
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting. -

MAC OS X version 10.6.8If you are running OS 10.6.8 it has to be Intel.
Serious slowdowns, if not due to a hard drive failing, are caused by unnecessary third-party software. Please answer the following questions:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)? -
in disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files? If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)
Thank you Thomas in fact I have seen your guide before and had gone thru the steps including repair disk which didn´t work. I am erasing disk before checking hardware. I have posted a photo of the 4 decrypted files in the disk utility and also of the adobe icons in the dock and question marks. Some people say if the adobe appears in the dock is because it is the trojan flash player and they keep jumping in the dock. If this is not malware it seems to be an incredible coincidence that when I start seeing these things in my dock and the decrypted files in my disk utility is when my computer goes so slow (I am typing this in my macbook air because to write this message in my imac would be about 6 hours, I am not kidding, it is completely useless at this point it took me 2 and half days too instal mac os x after disk repair, it took me 3 days to transfer just 100 gigabites and now is taking the whole day (and it says another day more) just to erase the disk. Despite all this the icon of adobe keeps jumping in the dock so, although I am no computer and mac expert, just an user, I am inclined to think that it is malware and it is a shame that mac doesnt´recognize it or have anything here to help me get rid of this. I am not even sure if erasing the disk will work since repairing didn´t work... all advice is welcomed.

Why is my computer now slower than when I had leopard
I have 10.6.1 and macbook pro 2.4 GHz 500 GB 7200rpm hard drive and now my computer is slower, sluggish with applications, WORD 2008, Endnote X2, Powerpoint, PRIMSM 5.0b, etc, etc. I installed twice now. It was super fast when I had 10.5.8.
SL is NOT faster, it is not smoother. Is there a way to get refunded for this purchase? I also would like to replace SL with Leopard 10.5. Does Apple offer an exchange?
Please helpIf you want to go back to Leopard, and assuming your don’t have a clone, a complete TM backup, etc., then you will need to do an erase and install. I would first try the Leopard (i.e., 10.5) DVD. But, you may have to use the Snow Leopard (i.e., 10.6) DVD for the erase part. Let's assume the first for now. Startup from the DVD by holding down c when starting up. Next, when able, choose your language and stop. Then, using the menus at the top, select Disk Utility and erase you drive. Next, quit Disk Utility and continue the install. After the install is complete, insert your Leopard applications disk and install the programs you want. Now, you are done except for restoring you data, apps, and settings using whatever media are available to you.
In the other case, you will have to exit the installer after exiting Disk Utility. Next, you would startup with your Leopard DVD again by holding c down during startup. Now, after selecting your language again, just click install. After the installer is finished, install your applications as above. -
Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ? how involved to replace fan ? cost ?
thanksNot directly, but if the CPU overheats because of incompatible software, that would cause slowdowns. Do not allow the computer to run if the fan is not working unless you wish to fry your motherboard. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
