My contacts are receiving spam from my email, how can I stop?

What is the best way to scan for virus on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.8).  Yesterday at 10am I started receiving numerous bounced emails in my inbox from random contacts in my address book-some that are very old and I haven't used for years (hence the bounce-back).  Also had a few friends email me back saying they were getting spam from me.  Shut down my computer and it seemed to stop, however this morning at 10am it started all over again!  Yikes!  I have three mail accounts including yahoo mail which is where some of the contacts came from originally, although I have since added them to my Mac address book. What is my best course of action?  Thanks for your help!!!

Yahoo email is famous for beiing hacked and has nothing to do with your computer. Most of the time.
That is not to say it is your Mac that is doing this.
If you really think it is something on your Mac then turn it off for a day and see if these contacts are still gettig emailsfrom you on that day. If they are and you did not use your computer that day then it is your Yahoo email system that has been hacked.
Also what you could do right now is log on to your Yahoo email and change the password. If the emails stop then again it is your Yahoo email acount that has been hacked and not your Mac.

I have recently started to receive copious amounts of spam on this subject - how can I stop it.  I don't have access to the service provider for the particular email address it is coming to

Is this an IMAP account?  Does it have a default SPAM folder.  At the least you can try transferring them from the inbox to the account's SPAM folder.  Often a providers system does use what it sees in your SPAM folder to train its own spam filters (one of the reasons many providers will tell you not to delete spam immediately, but leave it in the SPAM folder for a week to a month so their screening software can possibly learn from what's in there).

all my contacts have been deleted from an update. how can i get these restored?

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer regularly.  Your contacts will be in whatever program ( outlook, address book, etc) that you have been synxing.  Sync them back.
If you have failed to sync them, then they are likely gone.  You can try restoring from backup.

On your MIL's device go to Settings>Messages> Send and Receive and delete the email address you are calling. Add her own email address if she wants to use Messages and here own is not listed.

There are two reasons I can think of that this is happening.
    1) you have either a fetch or forward set up to get all of your email into one account, but are still checking all the accounts from the phone. The answer to this is simple turn off all but the one account that is collecting from the others.
    2) you have subscribed to some lists multiple times. Just follow the instructions for unsubscribing for all but one of your email addresses.

  • When I send messages people are receiving them from my email account not my phone number

When I send an iMessage, people are receiving the message from my email that is attached to my apple account, not my phone number like usual. It will occasionally not allow me to send an iMessage either and will force me to send as SMS. Any ideas on how this can be fixed? In my settings it says all new conversations are started with my phone number, but it still doesn't change any ongoing conversations.

    Hi ATrunner,
Welcome to the Support Communities!   Just so that I can understand your question .... Are you saying that new messages that you send are working correctly with your phone number?  It is just the ongoing conversations that are displaying the email?   If so, I would suggest starting fresh conversations to those contacts. The article below provides troubleshooting steps for the most common issues with Messages:

    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
Learn how to resolve issues with the Messages app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You'll learn what you need to send messages using SMS, MMS, and iMessage as well as how to resolve issues with each method.
Before you start troubleshooting, learn the difference between SMS, MMS, and iMessage. The first step to resolving an issue with iMessage is to update your iOS software and your carrier settings to the latest versions. If iMessage still has an issue, follow the steps below for your issue.
If you can't activate iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID
See how to troubleshoot iMessage activation. If you're using a China Telecom or au (KDDI) iPhone, you can activate iMessage only on your home network. While traveling internationally, you can't activate iMessage.
If you can't send and receive iMessages
You will need these to send and receive iMessages:
An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    iOS 5.0 or later
A cellular data connection or a Wi-Fi connection
A phone number or Apple ID registered with iMessage in Settings > Messages
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, follow these steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.
If your iMessages didn't transmit as SMS when iMessage was unavailable for use
Go to Settings > Messages > Send as SMS and turn on Send as SMS.
Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.
Make sure that you can send SMS with Settings > iMessage turned off.
If you want to transfer your SIM card or phone number to a device that doesn't support iMessage
Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage if you plan to transfer your SIM card or phone number from an iPhone to a device that doesn't support iMessage. If you don't, other iOS devices might continue to try to send you messages using iMessage, instead of using SMS or MMS, for up to 45 days.
If you can't send and receive SMS
You will need these to send and receive SMS:
    An iPhone
A strong cellular network connection through a cellular network provider
A domestic SMS plan from your cellular provider (You might need an international messaging plan to send SMS to an international contact. Contact your carrier for more information)
A roaming SMS plan when you use a cellular provider's network that is different from your billing cellular provider's network (Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.)
To resolve issues sending and receiving SMS, follow these steps
Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
Make sure that you have a cellular network signal in the status bar of your iPhone. If there's no signal, learn more about troubleshooting no service.
    Restart your iPhone.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Remove your SIM card and insert it again.
If you still can't send or receive SMS, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact who's trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that you're using the area code with the contact's phone number. When sending messages internationally, you also need to use the contact's international code.
If you're using a "Pay as you go" SMS plan, make sure it has enough available balance. Contact your carrier if you're unsure of your SMS plan or the available balance.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact from the Contacts app. Send a new message to the contact.
Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process might not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
Contact your carrier to confirm that you're provisioned for sending SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
Contact your carrier to verify there are no blocks or filters placed on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
If you can't send and receive MMS
You will need these to send and receive MMS:
    An iPhone 3G or later
    iOS 3.1 or later
A cellular data connection (MMS isn't available if you're using only Wi-Fi)
A domestic MMS plan from your cellular provider. You might need an international messaging plan to send MMS to an international contact (Contact your carrier for more information.)
A roaming MMS when using a cellular provider's network that is different from your billing cellular provider's network (Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.)
To resolve issues with sending and receiving MMS, follow these steps
Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
Go to Settings > Messages and turn MMS Messaging on.
Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Cellular Data on.
Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Data Roaming on if you're roaming on a cellular provider network that is different from your billing provider's network.
Make sure that you have a cellular data connection in the status bar of your iPhone.
Go to Settings and turn Wi-Fi off. Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify that you have a data connection. Turn Wi-Fi back on to continue using Wi-Fi for other features. If your cellular data connection isn't available, follow these steps.
Make sure that you can send and receive SMS. If you can't send and receive SMS, see the "Issues with sending and receiving SMS" section, above. MMS might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn more about which network your phone supports.
    Restart your iPhone.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Remove your SIM card and insert it again.
If you still can't send or receive MMS, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Go to Settings > Messages and turn on group messaging if you're sending a group message.
Make sure that you're using the area code with the contact's phone number. When you send messages internationally, you also need the contact's international code.
If you're using a "Pay as you go" MMS plan, make sure it has enough available balance. If you're unsure of your MMS plan or available balance, contact your carrier.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact from the Contacts app. Send a new message to the new contact.
Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process might not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
Contact your carrier to verify that you're provisioned to send SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
Contact your carrier to verify that there aren't blocks or filters on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
Your carrier might require modified APN settings to use MMS.

  • When i send an IMessage it say's its coming from my email how can i change it so it comes from my phone

How can I get my phone to send IMessages from my phone and not my email ?

I had the same problem, but it was only doing it to one contact. I found an answer that worked for me in a previous post. Go to settings/messages/received at and then click on your apple id on the top of the screen and log out. Then log back into your apple id account by going to the messages screen and choosing to log in. You will want to turn your imessage off and back on again once your logged back in to reset it. That should work. If that doesn't fix it there is also a caller id option on the bottom of the same screen settings/messages/received at and make sure your phone number is selected rather than your email address. I hope this helps.

  • Verizon spam filter not working---how can I stop the massive influx of SPAM?

For more than 5 months I have tolerated the massive influx of Spam from my emial account.  I check my spam filter settings, my outlook junk mail settings, and even resorted to deleting spam one by one.  There has to be some solution to stopping this push of junk mail from the server to my inbox.
    Any ideas and suggestions?

SPAM Detector tool - for incoming email only
What does SPAM DETECTOR tool do?
Your ability to communicate with family or friends can be hindered by unsolicited email or "spam". If you have your SPAM Detector ON, it will sift and catch unsolicited emails sent to your email account and either present them in the SPAM Detector folder or delete them. (Note: You can adjust your SPAM Detector settings in the Settings/Email Settings tab within Message Center.)
Furthermore, if there are emails you deem as SPAM, you can “Mark as SPAM” by selecting the email from your email inbox list view and select SPAM icon from top menu bar. It will put the email in your SPAM Detector folder and send an email to the VZ Abuse team and third party vendor to evaluate. If it is deemed SPAM, SPAM Detector definitions/rules will be updated.
Please note that marking email as SPAM does not add the email to the Blocked Senders list. Furthermore, SPAMMERs rarely use the same email address more than once to send SPAM.
With that said, You should start doing the following:
You- should start reporting the spam with a spam button in the webmail client
For-ward spam emails that were not caught to [email protected]
Set your e-mail filter. An e-mail filter and spam blocking software are absolutely critical. Set these security measures to update automatically to ensure that you are protected from the latest threats.
NEVER reply to spam. Replying to spam, even to "unsubscribe," could set you up for more spam.
Protect your e-mail address and instant message ID. If you must post this information online, set up two identities, one for real use and one for online activities.
Be wary of e-mail attachments. Change the settings on your e-mail program so that images and attachments are not opened automatically. Only open attachments from users known to you.
Watch out for phishing scams. Don't click on links in e-mails or instant messages unless the sender is known to you. Instead, open a separate web browser and visit the site directly.
Create smart and strong passwords. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Never enter your personal information in a pop-up window. You may not be able to tell when a scammer has hijacked a seemingly legitimate site.
Don't fill out online surveys, or register for contests or fan clubs. These may be fronts for spammers trying to collect your e-mail address

  • My InD docs auto-expand from the dock - how can i stop it?

why do my InD docs auto-expand from the dock when i close an active InD doc or make InD the active app (tabbing through dock apps) — and more importantly, how can i make it stop. its driving me crazy.

    that's not really the problem.
clearly few others have encountered this.
    1. i open an InD document and make edits.
    2. i get an email from a client who'd like edits made in an illustrator file.
    3. i place the current InD document i've been working on, into the dock — I DO NOT CLOSE INDESIGN
    4. i tab thru my OPEN apps, and highlight illustrator; i open the Illus doc, make the edit, send the proof.
    5. i get a NEW request to make a flyer from scratch.
    6. i tabbed through my OPEN apps and select IND.
    7. i hit command-N, but before the "new document box can open" —
    7. the document i had originally worked on, and previously docked, automatically expands from the dock and becomes active. if i close this document, and there others i had previously worked and then placed in the dock, those expand as well. i have to deal with EVERY InD document (because they have not automatically expanded and become active) before i can create a new document.
i have stopped docking my InDesign documents. i close them and re-open them as i need them. its not worth the trouble. but its supper annoying — especially if i'm working on several things at once, which is usually the case.

  • Spotify are stealing money from me and I can't stop it!

For 6-months now I've been trying to cancel a Spotify account that I didn't think I'd ever setup.  I once went part way through a setup process but never followed through and have hence never ever used the service. I have been unable to login or retrieve any user details and hence, cannot cancel thgis subscription myself.  I have had no response to help requests and have been left with no option but to get my bank to help Barclays.  They have sent a notice asking it to be stopped but to no avail and are hence now escalating legally. This is nothing short of theft.

Thank you, but this happened last year. After 6 months (yes I filed my first request around March '14, and after continuous efforts I only stopped getting charged in October'14) my issue was resolved. Yes I CONSTANTLY replied to my support emails, I did everything I possibly could to get them to hear me, but I never heard from them, and of course nothing was ever done for me until months and months later. Never even got an apology.
I only posted here b/c I was reviewing my finances recently and was reminded of this travesty. I felt the need to tell that story so that its further reaffirmed that alot of people have experienced this sort of thing, and I can't express how messed up it is. You can't steal money from cusomers. It destroys our trust. I will never subscribe to Spotify again. I've had friends who expressed interest in doing so, but I had to warn them to only do it if they are 200% on board for it, because if they ever decide to cancel they can expect to lose more than $50 (yes that adds up for us recent graduates) Fortunately they listen, because yes, money doesn't grow on trees, and customers don't deserve to be treated like that.

  • In ios7, custom labels for phone contacts are all out of order. How can I get them back in alphabetical order?

    See above question.

I had tried that several times with no luck.  Late last night I was finally able to get through  to the Verizon technical support who then called in Apple technical support.  It took 1 1/2 hours for them to figure it out and guide me through a fix.  So here's the deal .......... I use Yahoo mail and had left the "contacts" button in the on position.  Apparently Yahoo likes to go into your contacts and gather information and can leave it in shambles.  My advice is, go to settings, then mail, contacts, calendars.  Select any and all of your email accounts and go in and turn off their access to your information.  Leave it on for Icloud but none of the others.

  • The Danish version of Firefox was suddenly foisted on me after an update. OK, I live in Denmark, but I work entirely in English and don't want these terms which are anyway translated from English. How can I get the English version back?

  • Firefox has started blocking all incoming photographs in emails-how can I stop it?

Recently, Firefox has started blocking incoming photographs within emails, even those from trusted friends.
If I open the email in Internet Explorer the images are there within the email.

Which web based mail service are you using?
If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.
*Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
*Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
*Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
*Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).
If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.
Make sure that you do not block third-party images, the permissions.default.image pref should be 1.
There are also extensions like Adblock Plus (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images and other content.
