Can anyone help me, is there a way to trace a stolen ipad by the serial number? It seems the thief has wiped the ipad as it no longer shows on her devices list in find my iPhone. Can the serial number be used to trace it once it is set up on a different Apple ID?

You will only be able to track your iPad if you have find my iPhone active and the iPad is connected to a network.

You can only restore the backup to another iOS device. You can't download it to your computer. Also be aware that Apple reserves the right to delete iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so make sure you do this before that. Also, you can't restore camera roll photos from a backup to an iPad. They would have to be restored to another iPhone, or iPod touch.

The thief must also have access to your email, so you need to change your email password. Most likely what is really happening is that the thief is trying to access your itunes account and is entering the wrong password too many times, in which case it will automatically be reset.

Yes, I filed police report, but there is nothing they can do until I get back to them on the tracking. It's been offline. I'm sure the whoever took it can find a way around breaking in the ipad..i really was hoping to get my pictures and videos of my kids back

Once a wipe is sent, it cannot be stopped. You will not be able to track your iPad after that.

- If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.

My iPad has been stolen. Someone broke into my house on Tuesday. I have already tried locking it through icloud. I have reported this to the authorities but they cannot do much unless I give them the serial number to the iPad. With the serial number they can put it into a database and send that inormation to pawn shops, so i the theie tries to pawn it, the pawn shop employeee can convscate the iPad and hand it over to the authorites. We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Unless you had Find My iPad enabled on it then there isn't any way to locate it. If you did have it enabled then you could try locating it either via http://icloud.com on a computer or Find My iPhone on another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or Find My iPad disabled on it (as your tagline shows iOS 7 then it should be harder to remove from your account).
You've reported it to the police ? You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc., and if it was a cellular model then you should also contact your carrier.

The appleid its showing you is associated with one of the apps / songs or another purchase that was on the device the last time it was backed up which it needs to download the app / purchase again. It won't be from the person who has your ipad now unless they downloaded it and then your device was backed up afterwords, so only if the backup date was listed as AFTER your device was lost / stolen.
