My iMail accounts/mailboxes disappeared

All of my iMail accounts/mailboxes disappeared overnight (two nights ago).  No idea how this happened - I did not delete the accounts/mailboxes, nor was anyone else using this computer (a MacBook Pro). Did make one change before this happened: I setup a LogIn Password. Running OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. Time Machine not setup (so no backup). Using iCloud but not for Mail. Thanks for any answers.

This is why you need a backup, preferable 2.
Add the accounts back to Mail is about all you can do at this point.

  • New Smart Mailboxes Disappear (again & again)

There are two smart mailboxes setup in the "Mail" application on my desktop Mac ("All Mail" & "Newspaper"). These mailboxes also exist on my laptop. On my desktop, I deleted the "Newspaper" mail box and created several new smart mailboxes. The next time I looked, the new mailboxes "self-deleted" and restored the "Newspaper" mailbox. I tried this several times with the same result. I then created a new smart mailbox on the laptop and deleted the "newspaper" mail box. Same thing happed; the new mailbox disappears and ther "newspaper" mailbox returns.
I use use IMAP with my Gmail account and forward my "iCloud" mail to my Gmail account. The "Mail" setting is "checked" in my iCloud system settings (but not sure what impact that has on my setup).   I thought this setting may allow the smart mailboxes to synchronize between the Mac and possibly my iPhone. I am using OS X 10.9.3. I recently returned to mac "Mail" after several years of simply using the Gmail web interface on the Mac (plus iOS Mail) and am a bit unclear how the iCloud sync should work. I am pretty happy with the newer IMAP capabilities after using POP in the past.
Any suggestions on how I can create (and keep) my smart mailboxes?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    WHAT DIDNT WORK for me:
I have the problem, but I never had Docs & Data switched on, so Sheppard's solution does not apply for my case (there are no such files as mentioned there). Neither did Beda's move work for me. Causing fresh copies of the two files he mentioned to be created does bring back the Smart Mailbox category and a default Today smart mailbox, but putting the original files back in position, puts the problem back to square one -- no smartmailboxes appear.
    WHAT DID WORK for me:
What I found worked was moving smartmailbox specifications from SmartMailboxes.plist into a clean SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist file.
Steps: (This procedure requires something that enables you to open and edit plist files (e.g. Xcode). As always, keep safeties of everything before you mess around.)
    0) Before starting, check this file and confirm your smart mailbox specifications are actually still in there. If not, this won't work.
        ~/Library/Mail/V2/SmartMailboxes.plist
    1) Taking a tip from Beda, move the following files out and then launch Mail and quit it, to force creation of new copies of these files.
        ~/Library/Mail/V2/SmartMailboxesLocalProperties.plist
        ~/Library/Mail/V2/SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist
2 ) Open the new SyncedMailboxes.plist. It contains a single item (a default Today smartmailbox specification). Delete that.
    3) Open your SmartMailboxes.plist. It contains a sublist called 'mailboxes' where all your smart mailbox specifications reside. Copy each of these items over to (the top level of) SyncedMailboxes.plist. You have to do this one at a time if you are using Xcode, because there is no multiple selection available.
    4) Save and close SyncedMailboxes.plist (and close any other plists for good measure).
    5) Launch Mail and your smart mailboxes should be back.
Hope it works for you as it did for me.

  • Mailboxes disappeared in mail - rebuild not an option

My mailboxes (http mail account) disappeared after doing some automatic software updates yesterday and restarting as directed. Rebuild is grayed, so I don't think it's an option.

Oy, I feel dumb. Somehow an httpmail account mailbox icon appeared with all of my mailboxes under it. It did not look this way before. Do you have any idea why it changed? Doesn't really matter, since the mailboxes are all there (THANKS). I just don't know why mail seems to have rearranged my mailboxes that way and apparently on its own.

  • Nokia E72: Urgent:Mailbox disappears when 'memory ...

    Hello Nokia,
I had set up my corporate email account on my phone. Bydefault it uses Phone Memory for storing all messages. I tried to change the Memory In Use in option by selecting 'Memory Card'
    Messaging->Settings->Other->Memory In Use->Memory Card
After this change my corporate mailbox disappears and I no longer see the mailbox. However when I change the setting back to 'Phone Memory', The mailbox appears. Is this a bug or normal function ?
Also is there a way I can transfer all my email messages currently on the phone memory to memory card ?
Do I need set up the email again after changing the memory setting? Is that the only way out ?
Appreciate quick response as I am worried about my phone memory getting used up fully.
     Thanks
    Venks

Yes it goes, you have to setup email once again when you change the storage to memory card there is no way to transfer the mails stored in the phone memory to card. If you are dealing with some important mails its better to store them on the phone memory, if ur memory card gets corrupted or unusable it would be difficult or no way to get those mails back, also you make sure u delete unwanted mails when u use phone memory as it may eat up phone's memory making it slow and lagging its better to maintain some considerable amount of space in the phone.

  • E72, IMAP mailbox disappearing

    Hello,
I got a E72 that got in China and I got some major issues with a SMTP/IMAP mail setup.
(I got my Hotmail set up as well and it works just fine)
I have updated my phone to the latest firmware - as of today.
Okay, when I go in and setup my smtp account it works for some time, but then the mail counter will disappear from the home screen and in the also under Menu/Email (The Hotmail account is still there). I have to restart the phone and it normally comes back. This has been going on for some time now.
Lately I have had a new issue with this IMAP account, now I can see the mailbox, but I can't open the mails! I see all the mails in the inbox, but I can't open them or delete them. If I try a couple of time the phone jumps back to the home screen and I can't even access the mailbox. The phone still gets all the new mails whenever I get new mail.
Hope there is some help out there, Thanks.

I have seen the same issue with IMAP mailbox disappearing. At times I've noticed that if you have the mailbox already open and then try to open it again say after a short gap, the mailbox disappears. But it actually does not and once you go to the already open mailbox by looking at all open apps, your mailbox opens. I will have to think this is a bug in E72. Latest FW does fix few memory issues with email but its still far from being perfect.

  • Main mailbox disappeared for iphone5

My main mailbox disappeared from mail although it still appears under mail accounts. Anyone know what happened?  I still have all my other accounts listed under mailboxes.

How, exactly, did you close out the Mail App?
In fact, close out all running apps, including the Settings App, and then restart the device.

  • Mail hangs , mailboxes disappear

My mail has been hanging up several times a day. The mailboxes disappear and the application hangs. When I force quit it comes back as good as new until the next time it hangs. I noticed this happening before with the mobileme sync. I turned that off and it seemed to solve the problem but now it has returned and mobileme is not set to sync. Any ideas?

You may have to reimport the mailboxes. Try this
    1. Go to ~/Library/Preferences, and trash the com.apple.mail.plist. (don't empty the trash yet). Restart.
    2. Restart Mail, and Import From Mailboxes. Navigate to the ~/Library/Mail folder, and look for your accounts. They will start with "POP" or "IMAP". Import each one. Move the mailboxes out from the "Imported" folder.

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. The incoming mail server box has in light grey colour: p02-imap.mail.me.com in it and I cannot edit its content. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

    Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

  • How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac?

How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac when both machines are running Mountain Lion?
On the destination Mac, I have two mail accounts that I want to keep, so essentially I will be adding another 4 accounts (from source mac) to the exting 2 accounts (on destination mac).  How can this be done?

If the request above is too difficult (no replies??), then can someone help me with moving my mail & settings between the two Mountain Lion machines (the 3 mail accounts from the source machine to be moved to the new mac - the 2 mail accounts on the new Mac can be trashed if required - simple move from one machine to another)?  Is that easier??

  • Deleted Account -- emails disappeared

A couple days ago, I deleted an Account under Preferences in Mail (since I couldn't use that server to send or receive messages anymore), and now all the messages sent to me at that address are gone from my Inbox. In retrospect, that might be somewhat logical, but I swear there was some kind of reassuring message when I was deleting the Account that said it wouldn't delete messages I'd already received at that Account. Can I get those messages from the deleted Account back?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Before deleting an email account in Jaguar or Panther Mail, the following warning message is provided (the warning message with Tiger Mail is slightly different):
Are you sure you want to remove the account “XXXXXXXXX”?
This will erase all mailboxes for this account, but will not affect any messages stored on your mail server.
Existing messages on the mail server are not affected but all associated account mailboxes in Mail are deleted when deleting the account.

  • Shared mailboxes disappearing from Outlook 2010 profile

Ever since we upgraded to Exchange 2013 a few weeks back, one particular user keeps having to add her Shared Mailboxes to her Outlook 2010 profile every morning.  She adds them and the next morning they'll be gone again.
She is the only user in a building of 50 who has this issue and it happens daily.  I understand that it only takes a couple minutes to add them back, but it is starting to be more than an annoyance.
Sadly I haven't been able to find a solution.
Would someone here have an idea what could be going on?
    Thanks,
    Jake

    Hi Jake,
From your description, only one user has an issue that shared mailbox disappears from her mailbox. I recommend her follow the steps below for troubleshooting:
    1. Please use Exchange online mode to check if shared mailbox can appear.
    2. Please create a new profile to verify if the issue persists.
If the issue persists, I recommend her install the latest Outlook 2010 Service Pack and check the result.
    Hope it helps.

  • Upgraded OSX to 10.6.4 and my .mac/me mail account has disappeared

Upgraded this morning, and my.mac/me mail account has disappeared.
When I "Add Account", I get this message..
"The account “MobileMe” already has this host name and user name."
    ANy ideas?

I'd ask in the MobileMe forums first:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=228
    then the Snow Lewopard forums:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=263
As this sounds less like a machine-specific issue than a general OS or MobileMe issue, I would think you are more likely to find a solution in either of those two areas.

  • IPhone Notes: Accounts button disappeared...

After upgrading my iPhone 3GS successfully to iOS 4.2.1 I managed to configure over-the-air notes syncing between my iPhone and my iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.5 without any problem:
I just configured Mail on my iMac to create new notes and to dos in my MobileMe account and on my iPhone I verified under Settings > Mail, Calendar, ... that for my MobileMe account notes syncing was switched on. Finally I selected under Settings > Notes my MobileMe account as the default account for my iPhone for new notes.
There are no other email accounts configured on my iPhone and notes sync is disabled in iTunes and in the MobileMe control panel on my Mac, because this is not needed for over-the-air syncing between only one iMac and one iPhone.
There are no local notes neither on my Mac nor on my iPhone.
As I said before: it worked immediately without any problem and it still does so today.
But: all of a sudden the "Accounts" button in the Notes App on my iPhone disappeared and under Settings > Notes on my iPhone I can now only select the font for notes, but no longer the default account for new notes!
Yes, all was set to MobileMe before and all is still working fine, but what if I want to switch back to local notes on my iPhone??? I cannot select "On my iPhone" in the Notes App (because of the missing Accounts button) and I cannot set the default account for notes to "On my iPhone" (because of the missing selection under Settings > Notes).
Is this expected behaviour because there are no local notes on the iPhone/iMac, iTunes notes syncing is switched off and there is only one account (MobileMe) configured with over-the-air notes syncing switched on, so the number of relevant accounts is just one -> no need to show the Accounts button?
Why could I see the empty "On my iPhone" notes account in the Notes App and under Settings > Notes before I switched everything to MobileMe?
And how could I switch it back should I ever decide to do so?
Thanks in advance for any helpfull hint...
    Michael

Okay I figured this thing out. The accounts button is only there in one of two cases: 1) you have two email accounts that can also sync notes, for instance, Yahoo and MobileMe, or 2) if you created a note on your device BEFORE setting up a mail account with notes syncing and then subsequently set up say, a MobileMe account for instance.
#2 is what what happened in my case. I had created a note on my device before I set up my MobileMe account. By default, this note was local on "On My iPhone". Then I set up my MobileMe account and all my notes created in Apple Mail were pulled down from the server to my device. Now I had the "Accounts" tab in the Notes app allowing me to view "All Notes" (the one local plus all my MobileMe network notes), notes "On My iPhone" allowing me to view the local note, and "MobileMe" that allowed me to view only the MobileMe network notes. Then I deleted the local note, and the Accounts tab disappeared, because now, by default, I only had MobileMe network notes on my device. Once the accounts tab disappeared, the only way for me to get it back was delete my MobileMe account and all it's data from my device, create a new local note, and then set up my MobileMe account again and pull down all my network notes and other data from the server again. Once I did that, the Accounts tab came back, and I had the choices again for "All Notes", "On My iPhone", and "MobileMe", and also had the option in settings to choose the default location for new notes in the Settings app.
If you do not have an account set up on your phone that can sync notes OTA (over the air), then all notes you create will be local and the only way to sync them back to your computer will be when you connect the iPhone to your Mac with the USB sync cable, and have notes syncing turned on in iTunes under the "Info" tab in your iPhone settings.
    That's it.
