My install disc doesn't work

I just got the Quad G5 and the install discs to install bundled software doesn't work. I put it in and it says that the packaged is broken and can't install. I bought the computer from Macmall should they give me a new install disc or should i contact apple?

Your kernel panic is most likely the result of an older version of OS 10.4.x. on the Apple Care cd. It appears the new dual-core will only boot up from 10.4.3 or later.

  • Problem with XP Pro sp1 install - keyboard doesn't work - MBP

After using bootcamp to repartition the HD and rebooting with an xp pro sp1 cd, the blue windows installer loads and runs fine up to where you need to press the enter button to install windows or F3 to exit. At this point, the keyboard doesn't work at all and I have to push the power button. I also can not load osx or the osx boot disc, but the xp disc still loads fine. Currently working on slipstreaming a w/ sp2 to see if this will fix the problem. Prior to bootcamp, I upgraded osx and my firmware. Anyone else encounter this?

You need to use SP2. There is a reason it's recommended by Apple. If you have a valid XP install disk you can easily slipstream it with SP2, which is perfectly legal and effective, and is a relatively painless process.

  • Install disc doesn't appear -- FW 800

I've seen some similar topics to my problem, but nothing that really describes what's happening to me, so I apologize if there's a solution I just wasn't able to find on the forums.
I've got a G4 FW800, which should be within the specs to install Leopard (and I've even seen a post from someone with a similar machine who had a post-install problem, so I know it's possible!). My issue is that my drive doesn't recognize the install disc at all. Once I got Leopard and ran into this problem, I tried other CDs, DVDs and DVD-ROMs, and they all showed up normally. But this is as if there isn't even a disc in the drive. No error message, no problems restarting, etc., like others have had.
I've tried holding down the C key while restarting, and nothing happened. It just went to my regular login off the hard drive. So, I exchanged it, thinking it was likely defective.
New disc has almost the same problems, but it was slightly better one time. I had System Profiler open and was looking at my optical drive. It showed a disc in there with the proper name and everything, but it never appeared on my desktop. But that only happened once. Every subsequent time, that doesn't even show up.
There is also another minor difference with the new disc. Now, when I try starting up by holding the C key, it simply holds on the grey Apple screen forever until I finally give up and release the C key. Before, it seemed to believe more that there wasn't even a disc in the drive.
I have no other Mac available to try this on, and so I don't believe I can round up the hardware to attempt to install it on a hard drive and then install that on my Mac. But if I could find someone with an external optical drive, would that work? I thought I saw something somewhere where that could be an issue if I'm not using my original drive.
Is there anything else I can try? I saw a thread where some Mac Book users were finding success turning their computers upside down, but that's obviously not an option with my tower!
If it's some weird issue with my optical drive, is it possible to get CDs of Leopard, seeing as how I forked out the money for the OS already?
Let me know what you folks think. Thanks!

    Hi Kenstrom,
Thanks for posting - I've been searching, without success, for a solution to a sim. scenario. Perhaps if I describe the torture this has generated as an Xmas present someone might come up with a solution. Before doing so, let me say when I'm waiting for the disk image to appear, I have to wait a LONG time. My Background: I've been around macs as a professional programmer since my first Mac+ in 1984 so I have some experience with the platform(s).
My machine: FW 800 - Dual 1.35 GHz, 768 Mb RAM - so on target according to the specs.
[I also have a (work) Intel 1.83 Gb Dual w. 512Mb RAM which has already been upgraded to Lep.5.0.which (following the description below, I used to test the installation DVD on for 'integrity' or whatever A. calls it) and it is fine.]
    So all is legit..... Then,
    - I insert the DVD in the drive and it appears on the desktop. Click on Install and the machine shuts down and then can't seem to find the boot block or something on the DVD and just hangs. (grey screen, twirling spokes)
    - reboot, reinsert DVD and then set the boot disk to the DVD- Click on Install to the same outcome.
    - reboot holding down option key and select the DVD to boot from. System hangs similarly.
    - once during multiple repeats with slight variations I managed to get the Install started. It got half-way through the install and then it 'got stuck' and installation failed. This destroyed the previous system. I threw caution to the wind and reformatted the HD, thinking that might have helped. No luck: Same problems. So now I have an idling machine waiting for a solution.
I suspect there is something wrong w. the CDD drive trying to read the DVD. I'm guessing that the reason the install failed was that the screensaver/powersaver options switched themselves in - i didn't disable them - surely A. would turn them off before an install? I don't have a spare/external DVD player but I suppose that might be a possible solution. I would have thought A. would have tested all combinations of HW/SW install that it lists as possible. Perhaps not...
At the moment my partner from whom this was a Xmas gift - is muttering about sticking to her windose machine - and I was trumpeting the new dual OS tools!
good luck - if anyone finds a solution please post ref. here.

  • Install disk doesn't work with Windows Vista

I just bought a new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw and the install disk isn't compatible with Windows Vista.  Apparently there's no ful feature option for Windows Vista on an HP laptop.  After several hours of work I downloaded several drivers and got the printer to print, but the scan function doesn't work that well without the HP software which hasn't been created for Windows Vista.

I am having a very similar problem but do not have an answer either.  I am running an X61 Type 7676A12 with a Lenovo ACP50 port replicator FRU part number 40Y8160.  I am running Windows XP Pro.  The port replicator has never been very great and would not restore the external monitor picture properly when the laptop had been in sleep mode however it was serviceable if not optimal.  After downloading and installing the October MS security updates the machine would get a BSOD when the port replicator was plugged in.  Remove the replicator and reboot and it worked ok.  Plug it in again and BSOD.  I tried upgrading the drivers from 5.1.4a to 7.1.1.03Aug07 and then to 7.1.2.  No go.  Emailing Targus with the problem got no response.  The port replicator is now relegated to my junk heap of useless rubbish.

I cannot explain it other than to tell you the current recommendations are to keep java turned off and there are no other posts like yours that claim they need it on (at least that I have seen).  Also I have it off on my system and flash plays with no problems in all the sites I go to (modulo some buffering problems sometimes with certain hi-res videos on only youtube).
Did you install the latests flash player downloaded directly from the adobe site?
Maybe you have a flash storage or cookie problem.  Those can be cleared and deleted with the Flash Player system preferences.
It's your decision on whether you want to take your chances with Java on rather than find the root of the problem.  If you do that then at a minimum make sure you have latest apple java updates, I recommend you install and learn about Little Snitch, and use OpenDNS DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220).

  • Original install disc won't work!

Hey all, I am trying to take my eMac back down to OSX 10.2, which is the original OSX that it came with when I bought it. It had tiger on it and I can not get the original install disc to boot when I try and do a restart while pressing "C". On startup, it goes to the screen that says "You computer needs to be restarted, press your on button for several seconds". So, I just used DBAN to completely wipe the HD, hoping that would help it, since maybe it was having trouble since tiger was still on there. The HD is now completely wiped blank and the disc still won't mount. I put in my Leopard disc just to see if that would work and it booted right up and was ready to start installing. Why won't the original disc work? The disc looks brand new, there are no scratches or anything like that on it. Any ideas? Thanks for any input!

I'd need to check notes i don't have with me at the moment, but if I recall correctly, part of the update from 10.2 to 10.4 on an eMac involved a firmware update, which could be why you can't boot to the 10.2 disc anymore.
Most OS 9 programs run fine under OS X 10.4 using Classic. You could try reinstalling 10.4, then put OS 9 on from your original 10.2 set of discs; the exact steps will depend on just which version of the discs you actually got. See e.g. OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install and Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs

  • How does the "Please Install Disc 2" message work?

I've been puttering around with an old Titanium PB G4 with a busted screen, using an external monitor to bring it up to 10.4 from 10.3.9.
I inadvertently started the install with a 10.4 CD instead of my 10.4 DVD. Problem is, I don't have the second 10.4 CD, so I had to abort the install (using a hard power reset) and reinstall with the DVD.
The DVD install went OK, but now on reboot I still get the "Please install Disc 2" message, and can't proceed. I can boot into OS9 and mess with the installed OSX files, but I can't seem to find out where that message originates from.
This is more from curiosity than just trying to fix it (I could always reformat and reinstall). My question is:
What file or mechanism causes the "Please Install Disc 2" to come up on the screen? Where is it located? Or is it something in PRAM? Just curious...
    Thanks

One way would have been to be certain the first partial installation
had been wiped from the computer's hard disk drive. Even though
you seem to have gotten a second installation, whatever was hung
up in the first one is probably still on the computer's hard disk drive.
Disk Utility, on the installer disc's initial menu options, can be used
to reformat; it also can be used to secure overwrite zeros beforehand
so the hard disk drive has nothing other than the formatting. This is
as good as it gets for a blank-slate before a new installation.
There may be a way to see if a second full installation exists on the
hard disk drive, by holding down the Option key on boot and see if
you get the icon representation of more than one boot OSX system.
If so, try one of them and restart. Since you have two 10.4 systems
there, telling them apart may be by trial & error. If you can find the
correct one, it may be possible to remove the other one. It may be
that the last install by DVD won't work because its on the same drive
partition as the earlier failed OS installation.
If you tried an upgrade & install or an archive & install, the old 10.3.9
system may have the problem contained within it. Some of the OS X
system parts can be totally damaged by accessing (moving location)
of its bits; some of those are invisible while booted in OS X, not in 9.
That makes it possible to remove OS X, in a way, (and any older files)
while leaving OS 9.x intact. Any erasure of the HDD, and you will
have to install OS9 Drivers in the process of first new OS install if 9
is expected to boot the computer again. Tiger may provide drivers,
    if not, a reinstall of OS9.2 should. Otherwise OS9 becomes a non-boot
version called Classic, accessed under OS X. If you have the original
software installation disc set, that is where OS9/Classic would probably
be installed from. Not all OS9 system discs work in Macs that shipped
with a vintage dual-boot hardware. A copy of that OS9 could be re-used.
If OS9 is desired; otherwise it may not exist in the computer later on.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I need to reinstall my iDVD app, so I inserted the original install discs, but when I do, the start spinning for a few seconds, then eject after three tries. Is there a problem with my install discs? Or do I need to do something?

Are those other discs CDs or DVDs?
If you can get use of that other Mac, use FireWire target disk mode...

Put the MBP Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the MBP holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the MBP's Install Disk will show as a Boot Option.

may i shut down the computer or what?? please, HELP!!!!

You can contact Apple Support and request a new set of disks, have your serial number handy, and if possible, they will send them to you for a nominal fee. (usually about $20.00)
    800-692-7753 Technical Support.
You can get get your serial number from the back of your machine, or if possible, click on the Apple logo in the menu bar, About this Mac>more info, it should be on the first window that comes up. Many Macs disks are build specific so this is important.
You can GENTLY try polishing out the scratch with a micro fiber cloth, or a very SOFT cloth, moving from the center out, very gently, then rinse and DRY THOROUGHLY,and give it another try, if no joy try the tech support.
    Hope this helps

  • AppStore install button doesn't work on iPad Air 2

    Dear Apple fans,
I'm suddenly having a weird issue with my 1 week old Air 2 (me and my dad got the same model, same store, same date): I can't download apps from the store anymore.
Whenever I click any random free app the button changes to ''install'' as it normally would. When I tap that I have to enter my code or use my finger, as is normal. But when that's over the normal download circle & pauze button do NOT appear; instead it reverts back to ''Free''.
This happens with every app, paid apps as well. It doesn't start the download, it doesn't give an error message. To make things worse: my dad has 0 issues on his device.
I CAN, however, re-download previously installed apps from the cloud just fine from the 'purchased' tab. Internet works fine. No other issues what-so-ever. Love the device.
    Already tried:
    Rebooting.
    Re-logging.
Resetting (home + power button reset)
    Combination of the above.
There are no apps waiting to be updated or downloaded and everything is up to date.
This is really annoying me since the device is otherwise perfect but I can't really be bothered to do a full firmware re-install... I hate doing stuff like that: I've got a Windows PC to annoy me with things such as that haha.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
    -Kevin

    Hi Kevin ...
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then try downloading an app again.
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • Problem with adobe flash player, it's installed but doesn't work....

I have Windows 7 -  Internet Explorer 9 with both 32 and 64 - 32 being the main one used.
It's 4 months old and has worked beautifully up till a couple of days ago when trying to get into Mathletics website it tells me Javascript is diabled.  Please turn on Javascript to access Mathletics website, then it comes up with
    Mathletics Minimum Requirement
To view this website, Flash Player 9 or above is required. You can download the latest one for free from Adobe by clicking the image below:
We haven't touched Flash Player or Javascript so I don't know why all of a sudden this has happened after using it without any problems for 4 months.
Anyway I've checked all the suggestions re Internet Options Security (custom level etc) and checked Internet Options Programs manage add-ons, and checked under ?Help that we're running IE (without 64bit showing).  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the current Flash Player version several times, and when I check http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ it shows I have version 10,3,181,34 installed, I've even copied across from my last backup the version which worked before these problems.  I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Java.
    Can someone please help.

    thanks for the explanation.
I think I will leave ActiveX Filtering enabled.  I have added the mathletics webiste to my restricted sites (tools, internet options, security, restricted sites) and have changed the custom level to ActiveX Filtering disabled, and I have also changed the (top right hand corner) content filtering to read "no content is filtered on this site".
Is this ok that I do that?
However, it hasn't rectified my problem.
I see there are quite a few people that seem to be having the same or similar problem with Windows 7 / IE9 and Flash Player, is it possible there's a bug?
Yes I do have Citrix installed, will contact them about that problem - thanks.
    Thanks

  • V 1.0 Installed but doesn't work properly (crashes or closes)

I successfully installed v 1.0 after uninstalling the beta. I didn't use the beta much so I had no libraries to import.
I imported a folder as a test. The images imported fine. I could go to Slideshow and Library. But when I tried to go to Develop or Print the program would hang with the processor locked at 100%.
    This happened several times.
I then rebooted hoping that would help. Unfortunately it's worse. Now I can still only go to Slideshow or Library. BUT, it also closes itself after about 45 seconds of being open.
Also, after coming back from the reboot the shortcut icon on the desktop was missing (don't know if that's connected to the problem).
I'm running XP with 1 Gig of RAM. I also have PSCS2 and PSE3--(my old cataloging software!)
I reviewed any FAQs I could find and didn't see reference to this problem.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Fixed it! Lightroom is NOT compatible with NVidia NView desktop manager.
I don't even know what the desktop manager does! (It came preinstalled on my PC...It didn't have any problem with the betas of Lightroom!) But I had a message from the manager stating that it detected a problem. I turned off the NView desktop and everything works fine now.
Well, except my active desktop that got messed up early in this process. I can live with that problem though...

  • I want to sell my iMac G4 and the install disk doesn't work. What do I do?

I want to sell or give away my iMac G4 but the install disk won't run. I've formatted the drive and installed Panther from disks I bought when it first came out. I've installed them it to the point at which the animation comes up and you are asked to personalise the machine and create an account. I thought I'd leave that for the new owner so that it is truly his machine. What happens when he connects to the internet and it asks him to register with Apple? Can he use the OS if he hasn't got my Apple ID?
Or is there another way round this?
It's a lovely old machine and I would like to see it continuing to be used rather than going to landfill.

    Thanks Klaus,
It's a long time since I installed a new OS but I thought you had to go through registration before it would work. You certainly have to supply your name and address, and then it prompts you to register. Will it let you skip that step?
If the new owner can do that, why would he need the install disks? And how do I get through to the right person at Apple?
