My iPad shows a text box on my start up screen iCloud backup stating that the iPad has not been backed up in 2 weeks etc and i press "ok" to acknowledge but it will not erase and I cannot turn the pad off by the main on off switch - cannot use pad!!

Perform a Reset...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If still problem
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

A couple of things you can try. Firstly a reset. With iPad turned on, hold down both the Sleep & Home buttons until the Apple logo is displayed. Once booted up connect to a power source, and to your router via Wi-Fi, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Back Up Now
If the above doesn't work try 'logging out' of iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud>Delete Account then go back in to Settings>iCloud> and enter your Apple ID and Password.

press and hold top power button and home button in front for 6-8 seconds until you see an apple, for it to reset.
and make sure your initiating an icloud backup or it will come up again.
1. be connected to wi fi
2. be plugged in to power source
3. turn screen off
go to settings>icloud>storage and backup>backup now.

I too have been having this issue since about 12/14. That is around the same time I got the Ipad for my kids. I am unsure if it is related. I have tried logging out of icloud/deleting it and trying again. Removing most of the apps to sync. I reset my router. All of the attempts have produced zero results. Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears
To stop the message:
Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Backup Now
iCloud Backup will run automatically on a daily basis if:
- it is plugged into a power source
- it is connected to Wi-Fi
- the screen is locked

Go to Settings, iCloud, and then Storage and Backup. You will then see a button to backup your iPad. It may be that you have much stuff (i.e. photos, apps) for it to do a full backup but you will be able to tell what the estimated backup should be and what it will consist of so that you can choose to prune down items. If you don't want to backup and get rid of the messages you can just turn backup off from this area as well.
