My iPhone isnt allowing me to sync music from my iTunes library

I'm not very tech savvy, but I have never had any trouble with my devices like mp3 players, Ipods, phones etc. however, not it seems that I cannot manage my phone's music, whether that be adding or removing music. I can see what is on my phone when I am in iTunes, but cannot change any settings. any suggestions? would a reset resolve it, or can anyone maybe take a stab at something I am doing wrong?

What type of computer are you running iTunes on? Mac or Windows?
When you say you can "see" what is on your phone when you are in iTunes? Where are you seeing this? Where are you trying to "manage" your sync options?
Can you provide a little more info?

    Sorry, not sure if I understand what you are asking.
    Are you thinking of moving your iTunes / Media Folder from your Mac to the Time Capsule? 
    If you do this...when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem....you lose everything because you have no backup for the iTunes library.
    A much safer plan would be to add an external hard drive to your computer and move the iTunes library there.
    Then, if you are using Time Machine for backups, it will back up both your Mac and the hard drive.  Now you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another.
    In order to stream music from the iTunes library, iTunes must always be open on your computer.

    Yes, if your TV has an HDMI input and you have an Apple TV.

    Here is what worked for me:
      My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

    I'm trying to sync my iPhone 5 with music from my iTunes library and when i click "sync selected playlists" it tells me i have 501 songs when i know those playlists only contain 120 max! When i untick the playlists the number of songs doesn't change. Nor does it change when i re click the playlists i want! Surely if i do not tick any playlists i'm choosing not to sync any songs? My 16GB phone keeps telling me my interal storage is full. I seem to constantly be backing up and then deleting photos to make room. I have 5.02 GB take up by "other" can anyone tell me what this is?     Connect your phone to itunes as you have been doing.
    In the sidebar, select you phone and then on the main part of the iTunes window, select Music.
    Check the Sync Music box and then you can either sync all music, or select the tracks/albums/artists/genres as you wish.
    Once selected, at the bottom right on the maon iTunes window, select Sync.
    Music will now be copied to you phone.

    It depends how much you have to backup..
    You could also have a problem.
    Is any progress showing?
    How long as it been backing up?
    Any other text in the status bar in addition to saying backing up?

    Possible yes. Something you would want to do? Not likely.
    Music bought from the iTunes store is only licensed to the Apple ID that bought it. The other iPhone has no right to play it, and as such it would require your Apple ID and Password on said Phone to be able to play. Are you willing to do that?
    It would also be illegal, and akin to piracy.
    You will also overwrite any other music they may have in their iPhone and replace it with yours.
