Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a G4, buy a retail Mac OS X 10.5 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay; Apple still might have copies in stock if you phone them.
If it's an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

On an iOS device, as long as it has not been hacked/jailbroken, you do not need such software, ever (has nothing to do with traveling somewhere versus using it at home - it is just not necessary anywhere, anytime).

My Mac Mini is currently on OS X 10.8.5 and I have tried downloading the new OS X Mavericks package. The download will not complete and it remains at about 99% (give or take from what i see on the meter). The app store says i have downloaded it but not the apps that the package comes with. How do i update to 10.9?

I am selling my Mac Mini. I recently purchased OS X Lion. When I restore to factory settings, how can I ensure that the operating system will still be Lion, and not the original operating system, which I believe was Snow Leopard?
If you bought Lion from the App Store, you can't legally or practically transfer it, because it's tied to your Apple ID. Reinstall the original software from the discs that came with the machine.

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).

I've had my iMac for about 3 years now, and have been considering updating. I will never get rid of this machine as it is my digital media center, but have been considering buying a new Mac mini 1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo. The idea of this is to phase out my Sony Vio laptop. I work at an architecture firm and run CAD based programs such as, Achitectural Desktop and Auto Cad. If I get the Mac mini and load PC for Mac, will it run my CAD software smoothly? Also is PC for Mac the best software to buy for running Windows on a Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. CheersThe Mini's base configuration has insufficient RAM for moderate multitasking, much less CAD. By the time you max out the Mini with 2GB RAM, and a roomier hard disk, and the Core Duo (which i'd reccomend over the Solo in your case), you're approaching the price of the base line iMac 17". You may want to consider the iMac instead. Better CPU, better GPU w/ more memory, bigger/faster hard disk, and a Superdrive.
I bought my Core Solo as a "test platform" for dual booting Windows and testing the Intel Mac waters. My only complaint so far is the woefully inadequate RAM config on the base Mini models. -

Unfortunately Apple do not offer a download for mac OS X 10.5.8. They will only provide updates available for download. ( Normally you would do so once the OS is installed)
To do a fresh install of this software your going to need to buy a retail copy of the disk.
There are some vendors who do still stock the media disk, but they can be expensive.

Your 14 days are up, however you could take your case to Apple Inc. regarding same,
however those are the stipulations.
RAM cannot be upgraded however, period, its permanent on the logic board after mfg.
As for the SSD (solid state drive), upgrading same is a bad premise 9 times out of 10.
No notebooks is a mass storage device, and you need an external HD for data redundancy and backups regardless.
data that is static on your SSD and not used very often has no logical reason to be ON the notebooks, and best saved on a superslim external HD ($60)
SSD are very expensive, even a small one, HD are cheap as dirt and users are recommended to have one regardless for many good reasons. -

Yes, if the battery goes dead, the computer shuts off, and when you boot it back up, it's like turning off the computer and then turning it back on...Everything that wasn't saved, will have to be started again as when power gets removed from RAM, then whatever was in RAM at the moment is gone...
