OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Upgrade to a newer version of OS X as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • MacBook Pro getting constant kernel panics right since updating to 10.8.5

    Hello,
I have my personal MacBook Pro and I've noticed that since I've updated the OS to Mountain Lion, I'm getting kernel panics for the first time since I've been using Macs, and it's getting more constant, up to the poin I've just had 3 in a row.
I've been reading that MacBooks from Mid 2011 may have a problem with the graphic card, and as far as I remember, I got mine about that time, and all my .panic files seem to point into the GPU direction.
I have the panic files for the panics that happened this last month, and I'm copying the last one, that happened just 15 minutes ago.

Is this one of those Macbooks or this may be a different problem?
    Thank you

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?

    Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
    I might start drinking.
    Thanks.
    Mac pro 4.1 - 2009 - 2x2.26 quad xeon.
OS X 10.8.4 on a brand new hard drive.
    Ram 24 Gb (4/4/4/- 4/4/4/-)
    ATI 5770

Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.

  • Mac Pro won't boot, kernel panic at boot, graphics card failure.

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.

    HI,
*but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.*
If you haven't done so, boot from your install disk and run the Apple Hardware Test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684
Also, you can boot from your install disk and check the startup disk for errors that might need repairing.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
    Carolyn

  • Constant kernel panic crashes

My macbook pro (Mid-2010; Mountain Lion) has been crashing to Kernal Panics more and more frequently; from few times a week to now around twice a day. It's getting really fustrating and not sure what is causing it. I hope its not a hardware problem; but I think its might be Chrome, as it seems to eat alot of my harddisk space with getting constant 'Your startup disk is full' popups.
I've switched over to Safari for now and hopefully it wont crash.
I'm not sure how to paste up my Kernel Panic log; this is from Logs>DiagnosticReports:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

  • Hi, I am having trouble MacBook Air crashing since Yosemite upgrade. I ran an Etresoft check but I don't know what it means... my system runs slowly and crashes. I have to force shutdown. Sometimes screen is black for a split second b/w webmail pages

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my MacBook Air 13 inch June 2012 MacBook Air5, 2 4GB RAM  details below in Etresoft report. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and am having system trouble. My computer crashes and I have to force quit to restart. When using webmail there is a black screen for a split second between pages. This did not happen before. I am worried that it is not running properly and perhaps I need to revert to the previous operating system. I only have a MacBook Air and no need to share images between a tablet or phone so I did not need the new photo sharing software of Yosemite. I wonder if I don't have enough RAM to run it? I did not run time machine before I made the upgrade as I did not realise the significance of an upgrade as not very Mac literate. Any advice on whether my system is in danger... most appreciated! I am writing a book and making a back up but this machine is my lifeline and my work is conducted through it. It ran perfectly before... the Yosemite upgrade has perhaps highlighted some problems and it has unnerved me!
Thanks ever so much for your advice!
    Lillibet

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Constant Kernel Panics in PowerMac G5...

My uncle's PowerMac G5 is having constant kernel panics, almost every time it's turned on. Does repairing permissions in disk utilities, is a good step to ry and fix the problem?
The computer is running leopard 10.5.

You did not say how much time elapses after startup before the G5 experiences a Kernel Panic. Given the age of the machine, it is possible that your Uncle's G-5 needs a good internal cleaning.
Do not just blow out the dust with an aerosol. That leaves a dust film on the surface of the electronic components which acts as an insulator. I suggest that you remove all boards and vacuum them separately using a soft brush head. Pay particular attention to graphics cards with fans mounted on the GPU. These accumulate an unbelievable amount of dust. Blow them out first then vacuum.
Don't forget the CPUs. Remove the aluminum covers and clean the visible surfaces. The covers a very flimsy so be careful when removing and replacing them or they will not snap back into place when you put the machine back together.

  • Recurring Kernel Panic Crashes

hi folks. okay, i am new here and not too super-tech savvy, but am having an annoying problem with my new G5.
i bought a refurbed Dual 2.5 G5 from the apple store a month ago. (not the dualcore, and not the line before it, but the product line before that, when 2.5Ghz was the top model.) ever since i got it i have been having constant Kernel Panics (the screen goes dark and says "You need to restart your Computer")
i have not yet added ANY external devices. but the weird thing is: it is ONLY happening when i am connected to the internet and browsing, regardless of what app i am using (Safair, Navi, Firefox, IExplor.) it has not happened any other times.
now, so far i have repaired disk permissions, but this hasnt helped. i dont know what to do. i am wondering if it has something to do with the modem connection, as i am using the built in 56k V.92, so i worry that this may be a cause.
I am in a weird position because, since it is a refurb, i wonder if maybe whatever it is that had it returned for refurbing may still be haunting the system. At this point, i dont feel i should have to go out and spend more money to buy TechTool or something like that simply to troubleshoot the problem. i am hoping to get some advice here before i contact customer service.
    Here are my specs.
    Dual 2.5Ghz PowerPC G5
    512 MB DDR SDRAM
    OSX 10.4
no external devices added yet, and i am not doing anything that would be excessing the current amount of RAM (unless the RAM itself is corrupted)

    Dual 2.5 PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The fact that PPP is mentioned in the log suggests that either the software for connecting to the internet has some serious corruption, or there may be a problem with the modem itself. I would backup your data, and then see if the kernel panics have resulted in directory damage:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If the disk appears to be OK, and you aren't using any download optimizing software, then I would definitely have the modem looked at.
If there are errors which Disk Utility can't repair through Repair Disk, then I would get Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3 to attempt to repair the directory.
If your hard disk is especially full, directory corruption can happen easily.
But it can also happen for numerous other reasons, which is why I recommend backing up before attempting the directory repair.

  • Constant Kernel Panics on Mavericks 10.9.5

    Hey Everyone,
I really hope someone out there can help me out because these recent kernel panics I've been getting are driving me crazy because they always happen right in the middle of some important project I'm working on.
Before I share the latest kernel panic diagnostic let me give you a bit of history on my computer. I'm running a late 2011 MBP with Mavericks 10.9.5. I had issues with the logic board in the past and got it replaced. I've only had the computer for a little over 2-2.5 years now, and started noticing lots of issues with it after an overall short period of time, mainly related to performance. The computer would run hot with the fans blazing just from watching an HD video on Youtube. Admittedly I do heavy graphics work with Adobe software and 3D apps like Cinema4D. Some of the research I've been doing regarding these kernel panics has lead me to believe that this could potentially be a heating issue. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I decided that I would install more RAM in the computer, bringing it up from 8GB to 16GB. Apparently this Macbook model was only sold with a max of 8GB of RAM, but I heard that it could handle up to 16. So maybe this is potentially the issue, I am running more RAM than I'm "supposed" to, even though the system can technically handle it. Other people have reported issues with the Radeon graphics card (I've got the 6770 M installed).
It doesn't end there though, unfortunately. About two months or so ago I started having major problems with Dashboard. After running processor intensive applications (it would seem), Dashboard would start eating up crazy amounts of memory, stalling all my running programs. Some people said that turning off apps within Dashboard that constantly received data (like the weather app for example) could be causing this. I did that, but it didn't help. I would have to constantly go into Application Manager and kill Dashboard. Eventually I got fed up with doing this and found out how to permanently turn it off. That helped with the memory issues. But THEN the kernel panics started happening. They had happened very rarely in the past, but now it is literally every 2-3 days. And the last bit of info I can share to hopefully help someone figure this problem out for me is that I think the last two times they happened, it was while I was in the middle of typing up a document in Open Office. It definitely did just happen while using Open Office, but I can't confirm the previous one. I am going to be very careful to note exactly which application I am using when it happens from here on out.

Really hope someone can help me out here and I'm praying that this is not a hardware issue because my Mac ain't under warranty anymore!

    Hi Eric,
I downloaded the Etrecheck app and here is the report that it created:

I took a look into the Library/StartupItems folder and I can see the "tun" folder which correspondes to that foo.tun process. Should I just delete the folder? Doesn't seem to be any way to turn it "off". Also, I'm not sure how to turn off or disable Google Chrome Helper. I've been reading from various other people that it has been causing memory leak issues, but couldn't find any way to disable it. Some even said that after they uninstalled Chrome, the Helper app was still running. What should I do about that? Thanks.

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x0035D113): freeing free mbuf

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

  • Constant kernel panic in regular boot sequence - HELP!

    Hi,
I purchased my mac pro in march of 08. By june, my monitor had begun emitting a pink hue over everything. I replaced the monitor only to find that the problem was related to the computer itself, the pink color persisted on the new monitor. So I started using the one other working monitor port and researching the problem. I heard from a couple people that it sounded like a problem with my video card. It continued to worsen, the crash rate started to escalate slowly over a period of 4-5 months. Now it consistently crashes within 5 minutes of booting up, usually crashing immediately when the interface loads or shortly beforehand.
I took it into an apple certified technician to have it looked at. I brought only the computer itself since the problem had persisted on multiple monitors. One week later, they told me there was nothing wrong with the video card and they couldn't reproduce the problems i had described. So i bought a new vga/dvi converter and brought it home only to find the EXACT same issues on both monitor ports, pink screen or constant kernel panic.
So I zapped the PRAM 3 times, reset the power source, cleaned out the inside of the computer, played chinese firedrill with my ram cards, and rebooted in safemode. It FINALLY WORKS but ONLY in safemode which leads me to believe there is a faulty system extension or driver that is causing the kernel panic.
What is the simplest way to resolve this problem? I can't spend 5 hours isolating the possible .kext files. Will upgrading my OS to leopard fix these issues, i.e. replace the system extensions with new files that might eliminate the problem?
I appreciate anyone that can offer help. Thanks!

    Thanks BDAqua for your feedback!
I checked the panic log and the system log but still can't see what might be causing the problem. I tried booting from disk by pushing the 'd' key directly after the startup beep and before the gray screen appears to no avail. I also tried the 'c' key, command-'d', and option-'d' to no avail. When i access the bootdisk from the volume on my desktop and click 'install mac os x' i get the following error:
"Mac os 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine. Please consult the documentation for a list of supported Macintosh computers."
This seems odd since i am running 10.4.11. Below is a sample entry from the kernel panic log and the correlated logs from system log at the time of the panic. Is there anything else i can do? I don't understand why the mac tech support wasn't able to reproduce these debilitating problems.

  • Constant Kernel Panic in OS X! HELP!

    Hey All!
I got major problems with my Mac Pro.
I continue to get Kernel Panic duing Software Update, Moving big amounts of files around, using different applications (everything from apple apps, games and Photoshop/Modo).
I just reinstalled my comp and resettet my harddisk (wrote all zeroes to it) and got Grey Screen Of Death (please restart your computer) again. I booted my Mac Pro up as external harddisk and used my iBook disk utility to write zeroes to my Mac Pro Harddisk and it worked. Now after installing OS X, it supricingly crashed again with kernel panic.
I did a hardware test using the DVD's i got with my Mac Pro. It said everything was in perfect order :/
    heres my panic.log

All help is much appriciated! Sorry for my bad english.
I dont know what to do to get rid of this constant kernel panic shutdowns
Please write if you need more information. At the moment i dont know what to do.

First you cannot format the Mac Pro using Disk Utility on your iBook. You need to use the Disk Utility on the OS X Installer Disc that came with the Mac Pro. Insert the OS X Installer Disc (Mac Pro) then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen with the dark gray Apple logo appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Option button and select the GUID partition scheme option then click on OK. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed to install OS X.
If the computer kernel panics when starting from the DVD then there is likely a hardware problem. You can run the hardware test by again restarting with the OS X Installer Disc and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the hardware test screen appears. I suggest you run the long tests to see if any hardware faults are detected.
Hardware problems can only be resolved by taking the computer to your local Apple service center.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • 2007 MacBook (Macbook 2,1) having frequent kernel panics

My macbook has been having frequent kernel panics. They usually happen when there several tabs open on the browser and either skype is running or a video is being played in youtube. In this case one can see the kernel panic coming as the sound on the video starts stuttering. However, lately they began happening even when the computer is not being used. Here is the latest panic report:

    Thanks!
I thought about it being the GPU's fault too. Indeed most problems seem related to video (though this panic in particular happened just 1 hour after another one and happened while the computer was not even being used, just idling on the screen saver).
I wasn't sure that the backtrace was directly related to the cause of the panic. I know most modern versions of OS X have kexts that are downright incompatible with the GMA 950, but I stayed on Snow Leopard because I knew it was still compatible... Sadly there are not many Apple stores in France for me to take it for service easily, but I'll see what I can do.
I'd apreciate if anyone has more in-depth insights about this panic report.
