This works for me. Sets the start up sound volume through system preferences for the next startup.
Btu be warned that that startup sound is what tells you when things go wrong or when all is well.

In settings you have the option to set orientation lock for the upper right hand side button above the volume control. You can also choose to use that button as a mute button. Hello, my macbook pro is new, bought in August 2011. Just recently my battery died prematurely after only 118 cycles. However, the hard drive also had to be replaced as it wasn't for some reason working with the battery. Now, my computer even though the battery works and I've passed all my documents to the new hard drive is having problems when it starts up. It makes the typical apple sound when it turns on and it goes to the white apple screen and unexpectedly dies off (turns off). It makes a sound as if everything is starting off then a dying sound when it turns off. Sometimes I try it again and it turns off or it can also turn on randomly and fully boot. Holding the shift, control and alt key while it is connected to the battery until the charge changed color works but it is not a permanent solution as this problem has continued for a week. It occured a couple of days after replacing the hard drive and battery at the genius bar. Any help?

It is better to take it back to the genius bar.
Your MBP is under warranty and let them fix it for you.

Actually sounds like classic symptoms of a failing PAV (power-analog-video) on that model. Historically that's the weak spot in the G3 iMacs.
The lack of active cooling in the G3 iMac puts a lot of heat stress on this board and they eventually fail from overheating. Right now the board is still working as long as it's cool--it only fails when temps inside the computer rise.
About the only way to preserve the computer's life is to mount a 120mm fan directly on the case where the handle is--that's the exhaust port. The fan has to be positioned to PULL air out through that vent. It's an ugly solution to the eye but it has been done around here more than you would think.
Also make certain the bottom of the computer is not blocked. It the computer is sitting on a tablecloth or placemat, or there are loose papers on the desk under the case, it cannot get enough air into the bottom-mounted air intakes. Make/find some blocks to set the iMac a minimum of one inch (2.5CM) from the desk and move anything that can be "inhaled" from under the computer.
Even with such measures, the PAV board will eventually fail and be unrecoverable. It's a good time to start saving for a newer computer.

Try a Safe Mode boot ...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.

Ipod works with Itunes fine (can put music and podcasts on the ipod), but can't take songs off of the ipod. Using windows xp and everything is up to date. Any ideas of how to fix it?

I didn't know that it was posted three times. My computer didn't say that it posted anything.
My ipod still syncs to itunes and I can put podcasts and music on my ipod, but I can't delete songs after I put them on the ipod. When I try to delete songs I try to delete it from the main music list on the ipod. It's also doing all the other stuff that I posted before. The screen will go black and then the power off slider thing shows up for a few seconds, then it'll show the unlock slider bar. Then goes black again. It will also do that when I have the ipod unocked and changing songs or playing a game. I've restored it to the factory default/new ipod and it still does the same thing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and then restored it again to the factory default and it's still doing the same exact thing. I checked and my computer is up to date.

I got a new speaker system for my iPod. I used it once and ever since my iPod will not turn off without being plugged into the computer or the wall. My home network is set up with a single router that assigns DHCP addresses and does the NAT to the internet. This router does not have wireless. Its location is too out of the way (given where Comcast brought the line in) to be any good at wireless broadcast. So I installed two access points on the wired network.
I had vaguely known something about using the same SSID on the multiple base stations but I had also heard of difficulties a university reported having some years ago.
In any case I made the switch and it works great. I get full bars on the icon on the menu bar as I walk around the house. Exactly what I was looking for and no manual intervention once I set it up.

Are you asking if the phone logs when someone mutes it? No, I don't believe so. Or, are you asking if audio recording apps still record when the phone is muted? Why don't you use the included VoiceMemo app and test it?

I solved this problem disabling the second monitor from the dvi conection and conected it again with the vga plug in. My main monitor also conected by a hdmi plug to my mac mini

Key click sounds won't turn off

The subject says it. I have a quicksilver updated with all updates to Tiger as of 2007 03 13, and the key click sound will not turn off. Changing the setting in Universal Access does nothing. The only way I can get relief from the constant noixzse is to tuyrn the volume off.
Perhaps a preference file is damaged or needs to be c hanged manually. Any help on this?

This is a new one to me, but I think your analysis is correct.
The files to try are com.apple.universalaccess.plist (first) and if that doesn't fix it., then that one plus com.apple.systempreferences.plist, both in your ~/Library/Preferences folder. Remember to log out after you've binned them.

Problem solved for now. Cleanded the jack port with a q-tip and pushed the cable in harder. Seems to be working. Thanks to all others who posted these past suggestions.

Aside from breaking it, putting in in a metal pail in the yard, or putting it in a bucket of water, what can be done to keep it from setting a fire. It is so hot it burns my skin if i touch it, so bright, it hurts to look at, so hot there is now a warning that it is not usable till it cools down, but there is no way to cool it down.

more info, this happened after update to 7.0.2, and also wifi will no longer turn on since update. I took it in to apple store, it had one month left on warrenty, and they said that it would have had to get wet for this to happen. I thought that maybe it got wet through my jeans pocket in the rain or something so I didn't pursue it. Now of course, it is out of warranty by a month.
