My Macbook air is "burning" power adapters

I've owned my 13" macbook air for a couple years now and never really had an issue. Until a few months ago, I noticed my computer right where it gets plugged in was getting extremely hot, to the point where you could actually burn yourself on it. When you look at the power cable and the actualy plug in the side of the computer it was actually charred brown and black.
I've since bought a new power adapter and it lasted a little while until the computer burnt it as well and it no longer worked. At this point i've got a new power adapater and it hasn't charred anything, but the only way to charge is to now have a book under the plug to force it upwards and then it will actually charge. It basically makes the laptop immobile and it has turned into a desktop computer at this point. Very frustrating. Unfortunately myapple care ran out so i'm left a bit stranded. I believe, now, i'm either looking to replace the whole power plug in the side of the computer or just live with a overly expensive/relatively slow desktop computer.
Any tips or suggestions or recommendd solutions would be a massive help!
Thanks!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If this problem is related to software, this should fix this problem.
If it doesn't work and you can start your computer, open System Information or System Profiler (it's in /Applications/Utilities), choose Power in the sidebar, and copy here "Charge Information" and "Health Information".
If you can't start the MacBoook, the only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller

What is the best way to connect macbook air to present power point presentations

Since you posted in the Thunderbolt Display Community, I am guessing you are attempting to connect a MacBook Air to a Thunderbolt Display, but since you tagged projector, it makes me doubt my assumption. Can you provide some more details on what you are trying to connecto your MacBook Air to?

  • HELP! My Macbook Air won't power on!!

I have plugged it up and the power cord's light is green. It has ben a week and it still won't power on. What do I do now?

Were you able to find a solution... My wife's Air is doing the same thing I have tried all the KB suggestions of key combinations etc.. The power supply is green but the Macbook Air will NOT power on. Frustrated because I have a Dell laptop and never have had any problems as this Mac. So far she has had the Hard Drive fo so we replaced with a SSD $145... Then the hinges went $150... Then the LCD went $150 now it will not power on... from the looks of things it could be the Logic Board $850. There is no way I am sinking more money into this inferior product... I think Apple should be replacing this free of charge...This was all after the warranty was up...
Let me know if your problem has been resolved...

  • Macbook Air won't power up after update

My son is on an internship in Alaska with his Macbook Air -- bringing the Macbook Air in to a "Genius" is not an option.
His Macbook Air (about 2 years old) has been working perfectly, but then this morning Apple pushed an update so he downloaded and applied it and now his Macbook Air will not power on. At all.
Is there a reset hole / button or anything he can do? Or is he just out of luck for the next several weeks until he comes back?
I cannot tell you which release the Macbook Air is, given that he cannot power it up to see, but he, like all of us, is running the latest OSX.

Thanks to Loner T and others in that thread I linked to above, my son's Macbook Air is now working again.
Doing the following 3 times brought it back:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Does my Macbook Air need a power converter in the UK?

I am traveling to the UK soon - will I need a power converter for my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone?
    thanks

Input voltage for iPad and iPhone is same. 100 -240 Volts.
You will need plug adapters for those power adapters.
    No converters are necessary.

  • Charging MacBook Air with older power adapter.

I have just bought MacBook Air. I still own the MacBook Pro 15' dated 2006. Can I use MacBook Pro's power adapter to charge safely MacBook Air?

Power adapters for Intel-based Apple portables are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple portable, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. Using an adapter of higher wattage than the adapter that came with the computer will not cause the computer to charge more quickly or otherwise operate any differently than using the adapter that came with the computer.

  • MacBook Air will not power on after going to sleep

I have a 13" MacBook Air (2012) that has been giving me some issues on and off lately. The past month or two, it has had a few instances where it would take a lot of time and work to get it to "wake up" after the lid was opened. A few times I had to hold the power and reboot it as it was non-repsonsive and would not display anything on screen (black screen). Then a few weeks ago it was un-responsive for a minute upon opening the lid but I eventually got it to come alive but it was very slow to get going as there were quite a few programs running and it auto-rebooted itself. Once I logged in, it did it again but this time it got hung up on the apple logo on boot and was in a cycle of trying to reboot itself but failed at the apple logo. I eventually got it into recovery mode and went into Disk Utility. It found some problems with the hard drive and fixed them. After that, it booted up fine and hasn't given me any problems UNTIL... yesterday, it won't even attempt to power on at all. It was working fine yesterday morning and I was only using Safari (no other programs running) then I closed the lid and left for a few hours with it just sitting there. I didn't take it with me, drop it or anything like that (In fact, it's never been dropped). I just left it right there where I was using it and closed the lid. I came back in the afternoon and opened it up and waited for it to come on but nothing happened. It wasn't even powered on as I put my ear up to it and listened for noise. I've tried holding the power button, I've tried Option+Power, I've reset the SMC, but nothing happens. I don't know what else to try. I believe this model may have a recall on the solid-state-drive but I'm not sure that is it as it should at least power on and display a folder with a "?" mark if the hard drive was bad. I'm wanting to attempt to resolve this before I make a 1.5 hour trip to the Apple store so any help and suggestions are welcome.
    Things you should know:
It successfully resets the SMC as the orange light flashes green for a few seconds before turning orange again.
I've tried the charger with 2 different plugs with and without the extending cord. I've also tried booting on battery power only.
The power button is not broke as it recognizes it while doing the SMC reset.
Thanks so much for all your help, Silas

Are you sure you mean green?  Mine is orange when charging and green when fully charged - always been like this with the 3 macbooks I have owned.

  • MacBook Air '11 - Grey Power Button with "You have to restart your computer." message. I reopened it and looked @ the details and it said panic and then a bunch of code.

Basically I was playing my  game and running Skype, talking to friends and the display flickered and then a grey box with a power button and a message that said "You have to restart your computer." It booted up fine, then I looked at the details and it said something about a panic report and the one program it mentioned was Skype. I haven't downloaded anything off of Skype. I'm scared because I just got this computer as a gift and I don't know what to do and I don't want to make it worse. It's been about 15 minutes and it seems to be running fine. I haven't started up Skype again.

Read about Kernel Panics here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Most are the result of conflicting hardware drivers or faulty memory, but in your case it seems Skype may have been the culprit. Make sure you are using its latest version.

  • Macbook Air - Mega Sage Power Adapter is warming

    I need Help

Here's a statement from an apple article:
The power adapter may become very warm during normal use. Always put the power adapter directly into a power outlet or place it on the floor in a well-ventilated location. If you are using your MagSafe adapter in a poorly ventilated area, or if the MagSafe adapter is covered by a blanket or other form of insulation, it may turn itself off in order to prevent damage to the adapter.

  • HT3964 Is there any other way to turn on a macbook air without using power button?

    Hi everyone
I think I somehow spilled some water on the keyboard or something and now the power button does not respond. I see that the bettery is fully charged as the LED light indicates green. Now, is there any other way to turn on the computer without using powerbutton?

Nor would you want to try to turn it on under these circumstances. If the logic board is salvagable, and the damage is now only limited to the keyboard, then putting power to the logicboard could cause a catastophic short circuit and render the whole MBA a lost cause..
Immediately take it in to an Authorized Service Center or Apple Store Genius Bar to ascertain the damage and potential for repairability.

    Hello cass528,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air would not power on.  I recommend following the steps in this article when experiencing an issue like this:
