My MacBook Air screen won't turn on, yet it works perfectly on and external monitor.

Hi,
I bought my MacBook Air about a year ago and I've never had any issues until now, basically when it powers up, it chimes, it powers up, the caps lock light works, it'll even play music off my iTunes if I enter my password, but the screen does nothing, it just remains black, I ordered a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable to try to bypass the screen and connect it to my television, for purposes of backing up my work for the company websites and all the data I intended to keep, it seems to work perfectly on here, so I was wondering it is just that the display is dead? or is there anything else anyone could think of before I have to take it to the apple store (which our nearest is around just under 50 miles out of the way!)
So any ideas guys?

You can try these troubleshooting steps before contacting Apple.
Press F2 key couple of times.
Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761

Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

New Macbook air screen won't wake up after going to sleep - what's this?

When watching a movie on Netflix, for example, since I'm not touching the keyboard, the computer goes to sleep - sort of. The screen fades briefly and if I fail to notice quickly enough to touch a key, the screen goes black. The sound continues, however, and the keyboard is lit. I can't wake the screen back up. I have to restart it.
I've had the computer for less than a week.
What's going on - is my new MacBook Air defective or is there something I can do to stop this annoying glitch from occurring?

There is no need to diagnose such an issue, you just bought it and paid for service and 14 day exchange.
Return it for another unit, others here will concur on that fact.

My Macbook Air 11" Won't Turn On!

I didnt use this macbook for one month. Today, when I press the power button, it cannot turn on. The display is black and dont hear any sound.
I pluged the charger. The charge light is green (which shows the battery full). But I don't believe a laptop unused for one month still has full battery.
Any ideas?

One standard thing to try is Resetting the System Management Controller .

Do you have a late 2007 or early 2008 MBP? If so, it might be this problem:

If a different Mac, try an external display. If the external also doesn't work, it's likely a graphics chip issue. If the external does work, the problem has to do with the built-in display or possibly its connections.

MacBook Pro screen won't turn on

Yesterday my MacBook Pro unexpectadly shut off. It then would not turn back on and it became warm. You could also hear the fans blowing beneath, at one point it got so loud at night that I took the battery out so I could sleep. Today around 2:30 I tried to put the battery back in to see what it would do, and again nothing happened. My battery indicates about an 80% charge. I went to my schools tech help department and there we took the battery out and then held the power button for a few seconds, put the battery back in, and then it turned on (finally!). However, i stepped away for a few minutes a few hours later and it idled and then shut off and now I cannot get it back on (even with the method the tech people showed me). I'm confused and a student that really needs my computer, especially since there is no wireless in my dorm so I can't use my iPad. Any suggestions? I'm in desperate need of help!

Age is not a determinant of the failure of a MBP. I have an original 2006 MBP that is in 100% working order. The model number for a MBP can be found in SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE OVERVIEW.
It sounds to me that an appointment an Apple store is in order for a definitive diagnosis.

My MacBook Air (2013) won't turn on

This morning I was using it, and it was working fine. I came home this evening, plugged my MacBook into the MagSafe power adapter and went to power it on - and nothing happened. It is responding to the power adapter (ie lights up green initially and the orange) but I cannot get it to respond. At one stage I did hear a brief chime as if it was rebooting, but it cut off again.
I have tried everything I can find online - holding down the power button, holding down power, option and command, etc but nothing is working. I have only owned this laptop for a couple of months and I cannot think of anything that would have damaged it. As I say, it as working this morning.
I am desperate for help as I am currently abroad and not near an Apple Store and my laptop is essential for the work I am doing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The good news is that is still under the one year limited warranty.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If that doesn't help, see if you can access OS X Recovery.
Turn the Mac off, wait about ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys. Let go of the keys when you see the spinning progress indicator.
From there you should be able to access the utilities in recovery mode to verify and repair the disk if necesssary, or reinstal OS X.

If you can't boot into recovery mode, contact Apple for instructions for sending in your Mac for service > Contact Us - Apple Store

My screen won't turn on - just blank with Apple logo and rotating little gear thing

I unplugged my computer abruptly during a big storm and didn't log off or shut it down first. Now when I turn the MAC on all I get is a blank screen with the apple logo. I have tried a couple of fixes from the book like holding down option key but nothing is working. I called support and the young woman just read the same stuff from the manual.....I can't get a store appt. until Friday! (And I have protection plus which right now is seeming like a waste)

Hi.
Power off the computer by pressing and holding the power button... takes about 10 seconds.
Reboot, and right after you hear the startup chime, press and hold the Option key. Are you presented with a screen that shows the startup ard disk and OS X version?
If so, click it and press <enter>.
Does your iMac boot up properly?
If not, power it off again as above.
Reset the SMC
• power off
• disconnect both ends of the power cable
• wait 30 seconds - min.
• plug in the power cable - wait 5 seconds min.
Reboot. Any change?

Macbook Air Screen keeps turning off while in use

Hi all,
I've had my Macbook Air for about 10 days now - it was working fine for the first 5 days, then I went away for a long weekend break, came home, switched it on and now it is all messed up.
Randomly and frequently while the computer IS IN USE the display will turn off for a seemingly random amount of time then come back on with no input from me. So just to be clear, this is not the power profile, or the energy saving setting... what happens is that while I am mid-typing or in the middle of a mouse movement (it has happend a couple of times during me typing this first paragraph already) the display on the Macbook will go completely black, as in the blacklight goes off and nothing can be seen on the screen - then, no matter if I carry on typing or if I just take my hand off the keys and give it no input what-so-ever, after some time (as short as 5 seconds or as long as 30 seconds) the screen will pop back on as if nothing had happened.
Some other things to note:
If I carry on typing when the screen goes dark the chracters i've typed are there when the screen comes back on - so it seems to be only affecting the display.
Whether I wiggle the mouse, bash keys or just sit back in frustration has no bearing on how long it takes for the screen to come back on.
It appears to occour more often when the macbook is on a solid surface like my desk as opposed to on my lap - though it has occured in both locations.
I have power cycled, restarted, rebooted etc a million times.
It happens in both OSX and Windows boots
It is truly random, I can go as long an hour without it happening, then it will happen 20 times in 5 minutes.
The keyboard backlight stays on throughout (if it is on already)
If this was a 5 year old laptop I'd be straight away assuming this was a display cable, inverter cable or lid-close switch problem, but it's only 10 days old! I'll be very annoyed if this is a hardware issue this soon. What should be my next course of action?? Phone Apple? Or take it straight to an Apple store?
My only worry is that its impossible to recreate the fault on demand, its very random - however I did record a video on my iPhone of it doing it constantly for a 3 minute period while I was using the computer (complete with my sighs of frustration as a soundtrack!!). Will that be enough to convince them if I'm unlucky (or lucky depending on which way you look at it!) and it doesn't display the fault when they inspect it??
I tried to embed the video but the video button above is greyed out, whats up with that?!

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.
Start up in Safe Mode.

Beeping sounds usually indicate a RAM or logicboard problem.
If you have third party RAM recently installed, put the factory RAM back in.
Use the free MacTracker to find out your correct RAM spec and return the defective RAM for a exchange or buy top tier RAM from Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing.
If you didn't mess with the RAM, take the machine to Apple for a free eval.
You might want to read this if the repair bill is not worth it.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.
