My MacBook pro won't click even with an external mouse... What do I do?

On my MacBook pro I can move the mouse pointer around with the trackpad, but I can't click or tap to click. The same is true even with an external usb mouse. Can move but no click.

The question is, what model macbook do you have, year, and OS.
Some signifigant OS upgrades from older machines have encountered the no-click occurance that you mention.
Further information is required on your model and OS you both CAME from and are currently ON.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

My Macbook Pro won't play any sound from both it's own speakers or any speaker I plug it into. This has me very worries, please help.

  • My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

Try things in this USB/Firewire faq.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot, even using flash drive with OS

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro that won't boot up past the gray screen.
I connected it via Firewire to my iMac and the hard drive showed up without any problem.
I ran DiskWarrior on the drive and rebuilt it. That didn't resolve the issue.
I zeroed out the hard drive and tried to reinstall the operating system. My DVD drive no longer works so I created a bootable flash drive from the OS disc but when I try to boot that I get a screen with a checkerboard line down the middle (see image).
Any idea what this could be?

Could be a failing GPU/logicboard as you said the HD checked out.
Take it in to an Apple Genius for a full diagnostic, they wil diagnose it for free, then give you your options. (make an appointment)l

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep, even in safe boot

    Hey gang,
I can't figure out what to do with this problem. I recently did an archive & install of 10.5 on my 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, and then used software update to get to 10.5.2.
Ever since doing that, my MacBook Pro will not sleep on its own anymore. It will sleep the display, but it won't sleep the system. (I can close the lid and it will sleep. I can also choose "Sleep" from the Apple Menu, and it will sleep. It just won't sleep on its own.)
At first I thought it might be Time Machine that was preventing it from sleeping, but I turned off Time Machine and the problem persisted. I tried creating a new user, and the problem persisted. In fact, I EVEN BOOTED IN SAFE MODE AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED!
I went through every single step outlined on this page (yes, every single step), and the problem still persisted: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070129234938244
Does anybody have any ideas what I can do at this point? I'm pulling out my hair over here....
    Thanks!
    Scott

I see you've done your homework. I have this no auto-sleep problem on my Mac pro and none of those things worked for me either but I thought you should give them a shot.
I made a little sleep program of my own. You are welcome to try it. It's a very simple shell script that checks system idle time and if it's bigger than the sleep timer you set in system preferences it puts your computer to sleep. It will work so long as you can manually put your computer to sleep from the apple menu.
You'll also need to create a launch daemon to periodically run the script.
here are the steps to do it.
    1. copy and paste the following into TextEdit.
    #!/bin/bash
    idl=$"`ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'`"
    sleeptimer=$"`defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement "Custom Profile" | grep "System Sleep Timer" | awk '{print $5}' | sed -e 's/;//g'`"
    st=`expr $sleeptimer \* 60 `
    if \[ $idl -gt $st \]; then
    shutdown -s now
    fi
    2. Format it as *plain text* (shiftcommandT in TextEdit) and save it as sleep.sh (don't use the .txt extension) at the top level of your hard drive.
    3. make it unix executable by entering the following command in terminal.
    *chmod 755 /sleep.sh*
    4. Download and install [Lingon|http://lingon.sourceforge.net>.
    5. Open Lingon and create a new *Users Daemon*
Call it,say, com.sleep.launchd (the name is not important)
    On line 2. enter /sleep.sh
and in section 3 set it to run every 30 seconds.
Click save (you'll have to enter your admin password).
    6. Restart.
That's it. Once this is done you can forget about it. The sleep settings are still controlled from system preferences. The sleep agent will work with every user and even over the login window.
To uninstall it, open Lingon, select the launch daemon you made and uncheck the box "Enabled" in the upper right corner. save and restart.

  • Calendar on my MacBook Pro won't sync events with my iOS devices via iCloud.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (non-retina) running OS X Mountain Lion, and an iPad 3 and iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3.
I recently created some events in Calendar on my Mac, and later wanted to edit them on my iPad.
The event didn't show up on my iPad, so I tried my iPhone.
Neither worked out, and I assumed it was my Internet connection.
Later, my iOS devices still wouldn't get the events from my MacBook.
I made sure all my devices were logged into iCloud with the same account and the calendar synchronization was enabled.
    Still nothing worked!
How can I get my events to sync?

Be sure that the calendar on the mac is in the "icloud" group and not "on my mac".  Calendars "on my mac" do not sync with icloud.

I have tried multiple times to startup my macbook pro (I am not sure if I have lion or not) and it will only come to a white screen. Sometimes an icon appears that is a folder with a question mark in the middle. I have an external hard drive, but everything is not backed up.

I have tried Command + R as well as Shift while starting up.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro won't detect my USB 3 external drive

I've got a late 2011 MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite with all available updates installed.
I recently purchased a 1TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 backwards compatible) external hard drive (Seagate) to use for Time Machine backups.
Quite often when I connect the drive to my Mac it doesn't get picked up - i.e. it doesn't appear in Finder or Disk Utility. The drive does get power each time (you can hear it if you put your ear close enough), however the small light on the drive doesn't come on when the problem occurs.
If I unplug it and then plug it back in it sometimes picks it up - often I have to restart a few times for it get picked up.
Other times it connects first time without any problems at all, which is strange!
It was doing this before upgrading from OSX Mavericks to OSX Yosemite.
My USB2.0 500GB external drive connects and appears in Finder without any problems at all.
I've performed the following troubleshooting steps:
    - Connected the drive to different USB ports (no change)
    - Tested the drive on various Windows workstations (works fine every time)
    - Tested with different USB 3.0 cables (no change)
    - Formatted the drive (no change)
    - Tried different USB3.0 drives (same problem occurs)
I'm not really sure what else to try. You can't seem to get just USB2.0 drives any more in the UK (not 1TB or greater).
    Has anyone else had problems?

USB Ports can sometimes be funny like that. If you haven't already, these are some little things you can try:
    - First things first, unplug all your usb devices. Try plugging a device that you're sure works on your MBPR over EACH of the usb ports (just to check if they're both working correctly & supplying power on the mac itself).
    - Check the USB cable's A plug (the end that connects to the mac) and make sure both the contacts are clean, and that the crevass is free from dirt/lint buildup, as it can interfere with a proper connection. (This can happen if you store cables in cases or bags).
    - Sometimes easing the USB plug slightly out from the computer may help mount certain devices. If it DOES mount (abruptly) after this, then see item above on making sure your cable is clean, or swap out usb cable as it may not be working properly & try again with a new cable.
    - Lastly, some devices may need a firmware update to even connect, as with the cases of the Lexar USB3.0 Card Readers and some Seagate USB HD's some folks here are experiencing with their Retinas.
Here's another thread that may also be useful concerning an external Toshiba Canvio HD.
It's not much, I know, but hope this helps, if a little.

  • Why do I have to ask my MacBook pro 13" i7 to sync with my Apple Mouse at Start Up?

I've had my 13" MacBook Pro i7 for two days and have noticed that I have to go to the Preferences Panel to and ask the for the Bluetooth Apple mouse to be synced every time I start the laptop. I've never experienced this before with a Mac. I see nothing in preferences that addresses automatic syncing at startup.
    What am I missing?

Got it. Had to make it a favorite in the Bluetooth preferences. Clicked on the gear symbol in the bottom left corner and made it a favorite.

  • MACbook Pro/Bluetooth?Disconnect issues with an Apple mouse and keyboard

    Well Folks-
The disconnect issue I have with my Macbook Pro using a wireless Apple Keyboard and mouse is BACK.    I wiped the hard drive clean and I reinstalled and I updated the O.S. system including purchasiing Lion via the ineternet one by one and the disconnect issue has retuned on Day 4.    What else is there left to do?   Anyone?

    Hi....
Might be corrupted Bluetooth preferences (.plist)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that helped. You may need to re, "pair" your devices and the Mac OS X will re geneate a new .plist file for you.
Make sure the batteries are fresh also.

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.
