My MacBook Pro won't start up. Just get that gray, blueishy screen and don't go on.

Try a safe boot.

This boot takes longer than a normal boot, be patient. If it boots login, and see if it seems normal. If so, logout and reboot normal.

My MacBook Pro won't start it just goes beep beep beep when I press the power button

    Hi Csound1,
I haven't added any RAM my daughter was using the computer then it hung so powered it down then the beeping started. Do you know if there is a combination of buttons I can press when powering up that will put me in some kind of  safe mode so that I can find out what's up, I tried pressing D when the beeping started but it didn't make a difference.

  • MacBook Pro won't start up. Gets stuck in Gray Screen

Ever since two days ago when I did a regular systems update of iLife, iWork and a bunch of other updates to my MacBook Pro, the thing wouldn't restart. It gets stuck in the gray screen and no apple symbol shows up.
Just on a chance, I turned the power off and the MacBook Pro continued to start up, and was fine. I'm wondering if because I didn't update to Leopard yet, there might be a conflict due to my recent updates, or maybe one of my peripherals is causing it to stall in start up? I have my iPhone dock, External Hard Drive, Apple LCD Screen, Mac Mini Style Hub, and HP printer plugged into the MacBook Pro.
This has ONLY started to happen when I recently updated in systems updater. It's happened 2-3 times. After I send this I will check it again, but I think I will have to AGAIN start using only the battery source and not plugged into the outlet.
Maybe installing Leopard will fix this problem? I am getting it fedexed in a day or two.
    What could it be?
    Help!!
    Thanks,
    Lainey

I haven't received Leopard yet, so haven't tried to install. It's when I use Software Updater. the last update is what I think is causing the stall.
I tried something though. When it stalled this last time, I pressed the LCD on switch on my 17 inch monitor, and then the start continued. Is there maybe a driver update needed for the 17 inch monitor now that I updated some softwarevia Software updater, or is that just me being paranoid?
Maybe the software updater installed stuff that needs Leopard to run properly. Once I install Leopard, I'll let you know how it goes. MEanwhile, I am going to try restarting a few more times.

  • Macbook pro won't start after slamming lid closed...apple, grey screen, spinner only. How to restore?

Hi...After using the macbook pro, instead of just closing it normally, I slam'd the lid shut, without first shut'g it off. When i return'd to use it again, i press'd the start button, the apple and the spinner came up on the grey background, but nothing else happen'd...it just stays grey and spin'g. Clearly the slam'g of the lid was a bad mistake, but is there anything I can do to restore its proper startup operation? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

  • My MacBook Pro won't start - it just displays a grey screen with flashing icon of a folder with a question mark in the middle. Help.

It started while I was using Adobe InDesign, and that program froze, then crashed. When I tried to reopen the program, the error message I received was simply "Error: 16".
I tried to take a screen shot of the error message for reference, and it gave me a message saying I couldn't because I didn't have access to the files where it would normally store the shot.
Attached to my computer at the time was my Seagate Free Agent Go-Flex for Mac backup drive.
So, I closed any open applications, and restarted my computer. But it wouldn't restart. It only displays a grey screen with a flashing icon in the middle of a folder with a question mark on it.
I have no idea what happened - I wasn't using the machine any differently than usual, and it only had a few basic applicaitons open in addition to InDesign (like Preview, Text Edit, Microsoft Word, iCal).
I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Does anyone out there know what this flashing icon indicates, and if there is anything I can try on my own to fix it?
    Thanks.

May or may not be a contributing factor,  may have kicked in at a wrong time or running root code.

I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Well that explains it, MacKeeper is almost malware.
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
Search the forums here for "MacKeeper" they will tell the whole story, crapware.
Disconnect all drives, follow the "Grey Screen" instructions and hold Shift key down while booting, if you get into OS X , immediatly backup your files to another drive and disconnect.
In my opinion you should first check to make sure you have a backup of your data, then just erase the entire internal drive (hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility), reinstall OS X, same user name, update to 10.6.8, c boot off the 10.6 and Repair Disk (to fix a update error) install your programs and finally return files from backup into the same main user folders like before (Music, Docs, Pictures etc.)
A pain it is, but you've hosed your system and in the process you might as well rebuild everything and have a fast machine again. So happens to clear MacKrapper, uninstall CS5 and any other junk in your system at the same time. Fresh, clean, lean and mean.
Learn to Carbon Copy Cloner to a external drive that new pristine boot drive, you can hold the option key and boot from it (even update it), which is a real bacon saver when something like this happens.  Also it's free to use, donations accepted.

  • My macbook pro won't boot, I just get the apple logo but no progression.

    P.S. (pre script)
    I'm in the UK
I think my macbook's Hard-drive is capooot, here's my symptoms, windows takes 10-15 minutes to boot and when it does every program I open becomes non responsive every 20 seconds or so, so it's unusable. I've tried playing Arma 2 (which use to run fine) and windows gives me an error about cyclical redundancay checks failing (which is apparenty a HD error) and OSX boot at all (I've been waiting 2 hrs and it won't get past the apple logo). when OSX did boot some of my apps in launch pad didn't have a logo on them (presumablly because they didn't load).
anywho, I ran a disc fragmentation analysis in windows (despite not trusting windows to fix any of my problems ) and it said 22% fragmented but I only installed windows about a week ago (and have only 1 7GB file I think).
I have had troubles installing windows and have had to re-install it twice, each with progressivly more trouble, 1st time, bootcamp installed it for me (easy!). 2nd, bootcamp couldn't partition it, however disc utility managed it . 3rd time, neither could partition it (probably due to fragmentation I presume) so I had to back up OSX, erase my HD, partition it, install OSX, restore OSX files, install windows 7.
Anyway, does this appear to be a HD problem? My mac is about 8 months old so I still have 28 months left of my warranty (I got a free 3 year warranty because I'm a student, top tip people ) So what do I do to hopefully get a replacement HD? WHAT'S THE NUMBER? (I capslocked because the thing is long and that's the main point).
I've tried the express lane thingy but the page doesn't load when I enter my serial number (I've even downloaded safari on my mum's computer to see if it'll load on that) :/

The three beeps mean, I think, self-test has found memory problems.

  • My MacBook Pro won't start up (stay in the apple with a loop screen)

Yesterday night, I reseted something (OptionCommand+RP) Then, the second time I turned on the mac, it stayed in the apple screen with a loop for 1 hour, then I forced to turn off it. Next morning, the problem still there.
    Anyone knows the solution?

Boot from your system install DVD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.
If that does not work, try an Archive and Install.

  • I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

  • Hi! My MacBook Pro won't start! HELP !!!

Hi! My MacBook Pro won't start! I have tried everything I can think of like Safe Mode (doesn't work), Recovery (does not find Recovery Drive), Booting with OS Snow Leopard Cd (doesn't work)...
I have really no clue about what to do now... I paid quite a lot of money for this computer and am pretty short of money nowadays! Would like to repair with help rather than having to take it to Apple Store.
Has anyone had this same problem?
All I get is white screen + grey Apple and spinning grey disk...  it's 100% frustrating! Any help would be more than welcome since I think i've tried EVERY SUGGESTION on this Support Center and Youtube videos...
This MBP is from 2011, runs on OS X 10.6.8
I tried booting with OS X Snow Leopard CD, it didn't work!  (my cd player works! recognizes the Snow Leopard CD, but then never opens it... goes back forever to the with screen + apple and spinning disk)
I don't care about the content, it's OK if i lose all DATA... I just want to bring this Mac BACK TO LIFE!
When i run coomand on root# fsck -fy  --> RESULT = my HD was checked and seems to be FINE!
    Thanks

Macbook Pro won't start properly... keeps restarting without chime!
Late 2007 Macbook pro.  OS upgrade worked great for me.
I have had this problem on and off for a month or so.  I simply cannot figure out what the issue is.  I have tried poerup with and without AC power and with/without battery installed.
Starting in Safe mode does not help.
Trying to start with a disk does not help.
It sort of seems like it might be an internal power issue or GPU issue.
It also feels sort of like a software compatibility issue since my Macbook Pro gets reallly slugish for no apparent reason sometimes and IU have to restart.
I have three different anti-virus programs so I doubt it is a virus issue.
I noticed all this start after I did a Mountain Lion upgrade and then tried to start up VMware Fusion.  Fusion seemed to just bog down the computer horribly but did not cause a system crash.
I need to edit an important sequence on Final Cut Pro and don't want it to freeze me out!
Anyone who has had this problem and resolved it please let me know
    God bless

If it doesnt chine it doesn't mean much, the mute could be on or you installed a anti-chime software.

  • MacBook Pro won't start at all - clicking noise with black screen

Early 2011 MacBook Pro won't start: makes clicking noise after power button is held down, but no screen movement and after click, sounds like computer just stops working. Already did a SMC reset, and undid battery to try to run on charger power only. Same result every time. Also, my Apple Care expired 3 days ago. A few weeks ago had to repair a disk using Disk Utility because there was a discrepancy between how much storage was in the drive versus how much was actually being used.

You likely have the problem that many of us 15" and 17" 2011 models are having: a faulty soldering GPU and as discussed here -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0. It usually, but not always, beings with screen glitches and then gets to the point where the machine will simply not boot.
It's  ashamed that you're not longer under AppleCare which would have, at least, got you a new logic board. A new logic board, however, doesn't usually fix the situation - only a BGA Reballing of the GPU seems to have long-lasting fixes.
Read through a few the articles (not all of them!) and make the decision yourself - and then make the decision about whom your going to contact.
    Good luck,

  • My 2009 2.26Ghz MacBook Pro won't start up

My 2009 2.26Ghz MacBook Pro won't start up. I know it's not the HDD because I replaced it with the old one I had in it and it did the same thing. I also know it isn't the HDD because I can boot of of it when I attatch it via an external HDD enclosure. It sometimes turns on if I let it sit for 30 minutes and if it does turn on it works perfectly and has no symptoms until I close it then it freezes up when I wake it up and I have to hard restart it but it doesn't restart then. It seems to do this more so if I close it then move it (put it in my bag and go to school). It's getting me really upset cause if it's my motherboard it's $600 to replace (almost not worth replacing except I don't have $1400 for a new MBP) please give any advice. I thought about buying the data doubler by OWC but that would be a last resort. I upgraded the ram to 8gb, 1333mhz (I know it uses 1066Mhz but I couldn't find any where I live so I put in 1333mhz ram expecting it to underclock to 1066 which it seems to have done that with no issue to my knowledge just thought I'd add that in case though.

Sluggish could be due to not enough ram for what you want to do.
Keep working with it, you may need to put more ram in, but go for the stuff that meets the specs.
A much liked source on here is OWC, http:www.macsales.com you only have to look up your machine to get exactly the right stuff.
Get back with how it is working, would like to hear more.

  • Attn: macbook pro won't start up past grey screen NO MATTER WHAT

my macbook pro won't start up past the grey screen, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. i've searched all the discussions on this, and NOTHING WORKS. nothing caused this either - i was just browing the internet and using ichat, and my computer shut down, and that is when this started.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this bullstein. My computer works great, etc., and I support mac and apple to the nth degree, but then some stupid crap like this happens and I can't use my computer at all. I have to use my sister's **** ibook g3 to even do this.
PLEASE HELP. do NOT post what you have already posted in the other discussions, and i've already been welcomed to the boards. I can't go to an apple store because i'm on vacation in new mexico for the summer, and there no stores anywhere near here. is there any real advice around here? I need to use my computer. That is why I spent close to $4,000 for it with upgrades and software.

where can i get an install disc for the macbook pro?
You really need to use the one that came with your MBP. If you don't have it, a retail Tiger OS X disc should work.
also, could an archive/install potentially free up some harddrive space on my computer?
No, it will actually use more space, so you will need at least 6G of free space. To clean your hard drive, use WhatSize.

  • MacBook pro won't start up.

The last two times I've been in Mexico City, my MacBook pro won't start up.  I hear the chime and see the apple icon, but it just spins and makes a clicking sound.  It works fine back home. I think it might be the altitude, but my husband's MacBook works.  Help!
