My MBP (early2008,10.7.1) freezes on wakeup. even black or gray screen appearing, mouse is moving but no reaction. is there any fix?

do you have also freezing os issue with safari/flash ?

Hi w,
You may have the NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues (but this is only one potential symptom). If you have the 8600 GPU, bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

If it's not MobileMe, use Safari to access the server directly and delet from there. If it is MobileMe, do the same thing but from your computer as the iPad Safari won't connect to MobileMe mail.

  • Youtube videos lag/freeze on full screen when mouse is inactive, but only in firefox.

I absolutely HATE IE, so I hope we can find a solution to my problem.
Pc info: Win 7 64 bit, 2.9 pentium with 4 gig ram
    video: radeon HD 3800
Three days ago I was infected by some malware. While i had it i could not watch videos on youtube in full screen unless i constantly moved my mouse. I uninstalled the malware and it didn't help. I reinstalled videos card drivers (even tried the new beta drivers), firefox, adobe flash, java 32 and 64 bit, and performed these steps: http://techlogon.com/2012/06/04/flash-player-crashes-in-all-web-browsers/
I've reset Firefox, emptied cache in Firefox, and manually deleted all program temp folders I could find. Also, I have disabled all add-ons and plugins, and even ran Firefox in safemode. Nothing seems to work.
There may be a few things I've forgotten that I've tried.

well, in windows safe mode, it seems to play the video in full screen without the mouse moving, but while playing (normal or full screen) it either restarts the video several times or straight crashes the player.

  • Macbook Pro takes long to boot up, Freezes easily, Gets Gray Screen saying restart

I've had my Macbook Pro 13 since November 2010, I am still running Snow Leopard, never upgraded or anything. Since last March, my computer takes a long time to turn on, get to the screen where I log in. If I click anything when it gets to the screen right away, I can't click anything, the mouse moves, but nothing responds. I have to wait a good 15-20 minutes before I can click anything. I usually turn my computer on, and leave, come back 25-30 minutes later, and log in. When I have over 3 applications open, ex Firefox, MS Word, Spotify, my computer lags, and sometimes freezes. The freezes last from 30 seconds, to me having to restart the computer. Sometimes the computer freezes randomly when I'm just browsing. Around 70-80% of the time, when I play a video, using flash player like youtube, my computer lags, and after watching a video or 2, the computer freezes. Most of the time, the freeze stays frozen, and around 10 minutes later my mouse can move, but the screen is frozen, and the rainbow loading symbol starts. I just restart the computer. Sometimes, around once every 2 days, or sometimes it happens around 10 times in a couple of hours of me using the computer, my computer gets a gray screen that descends down the screen, it says in multiple languages that I have to immediately restart my computer by pressing the power button down and then pressing it again. Oh, and the bottom of my computer always gets really really hot when I use it.
It is a huge hassle, I can still use the computer, but I would love it if my computer was fixed.

I am still running Snow Leopard, never upgraded or anything.
What about updates?  Check software update.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer.  Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again.  If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up.  At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
    Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Snow Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy of Snow Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
Oh, and the bottom of my computer always gets really really hot when I use it.
User Tip:  How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.

  • MBP has gray screen on start up, won't reboot

I bought a used MBP (early 2011) with OS X 10.6.8. It's been running just fine, but last night moving files the screen suddenly went black. I rebooted and it will come up to a gray screen and then sit there. The fans start revving up and it gets really really hot. Of course I haven't done a backup recently, so I need the information on the computer. I am hesitant to return it (under warranty) for fear of not recovering my data. Help!

When I connect my 27" Thunderbolt Display to my 15" Macbook Pro it freezes up and I get a gray screen.
But when I start-up without met TB Display I starts fine. What could be the problem?

    Welcome to AD!
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Also here's a Gray Screen Apple doc.

  • Early 2011 MBP stuck on gray screen, verbose mode shows SMC error too

    Hi!
I have and early 2011 MBP, running on OS 10.7.5 is continuously stuck at grey screen upon start-up.
I tried the steps as mentioned in Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support article apart from reinstalling OS X. The laptop started after every step, but then stopped again. I tried SMC update, that also worked for once, and on the second start up I ended up with a blue screen. During a later attempt, it worked again for a while, but ended with a distorted graphics after 15 mins. AHT (short version) doesn't show any hardware errors. Now the laptop doesn't go further than grey screen at all, and after a minute or so there's a heavy fan activity. The verbose mode also shows and SMC error, smc: : smcinithelper error: mmio regmap ==null - fall back to old smc mode (AHT Shows SMC version as 1.69f4)
    What do you advise?

    Try this:
Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
    Then try a safe boot:

    Any success?
    Ciao.

  • 3Yr Old MBP Gray Screen, How to recover data?

AppleCare on my MBP recently expired, and, lo-and-behold, the MBP will not boot anymore - after I took care of it like a baby. It had never left my desk at home. My 12 year old Toshiba is still chugging along. Dang!
When I press the power button on my MBP, I get the gray screen and the spinning wheel, but never get the login window.
I ran AHT at startup by pressing "D" at boot time, and results were A-OK.
I booted with the OS X disk, then looked at the (only) volume with Disk Utility. The volume wasn't mounted. When I tried to mount it, got a message that said "Try running First Aid". I ran "Repair", and the result was "volume appears OK".
SMART Status was "Not Supported" (Before it was always "Verified".)
I booted with a TechTool Deluxe disk and ran all tests. All tests were OK, except for "Drive Hardware Failed".
I did a "safe-verbose" boot by pressing Shift-Command-V.  The MBP issues the following messages before it turns into a paperweight:
    jnl: unknown-dev: replay-journal: from .....: to .....
    disk0s2: I/O error.
    0 [ Level 3 ] [ ReadUID 0 ] ...  [ErrType IO] [ErrNo 5] [IOType Write] ...
    jnl: unknown-dev: update_fs_block : failed to update block 2 (ret 5)
jnl: unknown-dev: journal_open: error replaying the journal !
hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0).
AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager:: SetPowerState... timed out after 109581 ms
If I am to trust TechTool Deluxe, the HD is dead - hardware wise. But am I correct to assume that I may be able to recover the data - because the other TTD tests and the Disk Utility Repair test said the volume was A-OK ?
How are TTD and DU able to scan the volume, but the MBP cannot boot from it? Is the HD not really dead?
I would appreciate any suggestions on how I may get to the data on the volume - Target Disk Mode? (I have a good Mac Pro on hand.)

  • MBP 2011 Discrete Video Card Freezes iTunes

I just got an MBP 2011 17" 2.2Ghz i7. I have not run into any overheating issues (as addressed in other topics). However, I have isolated a very odd conflict with iTunes and the discrete video card. I can play games such as Starcraft 2 using the discrete graphics card without incident, so the card itself seems to be working fine. Somehow iTunes brings it to it's knees, though.
If I am using dynamic video card switching or have the discrete card selected and open iTunes, the entire OS locks up for about 10 seconds at a time, with about 1 second in between each lockup where things process. My mouse is free, but other applications are also locked up. If I quit iTunes, the problem goes away within 10 seconds or so. If I switch to using the integrated graphics, I can open iTunes and use it without a problem, no lockups at all.
I have tried completely removing iTunes (including all applicable plists, etc), then re-installing. No change. I have also tried re-installing Snow Leopard entirely and opening iTunes immediately after install. No change, still locks up. The Console app does not report anything relating to the issue that I can see.
I have the problem isolated and repeatable. There is some conflict between iTunes and the AMD Radeon HD 6750 discrete video card. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas to try? Or is this just something that will be fixed by a new video card driver released by Apple in the near term?

    Hi,
I do have the problems to, didn't know it was a problem of iTunes. I thought it might be my ram(changed it myself to 8GB ram to save 160$!), or my harddrive(changed it to 7200rpm that i already had).
    Greetings,
    TNAJanssen

  • Freezes and Gray Screens

I've been experiencing freezes and gray screen at startup problems on the MBP for a while and I'm at a loss as to what to do next.
Here's what I've done so far:
Run memtest, Drive Genius Disk Check for bad sectors and extended Apple Hardware Test - all ok - so I believe the hardware is good.
A clean install of Snow Leopard with the SL upgrade disk. The MBP came with Leopard installed.
Run Disk Warrior several times and replaced directory.
Read and followed the Apple Gray Screen support document and concluded peripherals were not a cause.
Udated drivers including printer (Kodak 5100) Axiom Pro Hypercontrol.
Bought a replacement Western Digital Scorpion Black 500gb drive, ran Disk Check and installed 10.6 from the upgrade disk and ran Software Update. Installed Logic Pro and still had a gray screen when booting from a Firewire connection.
I've read that the gray screen is an indication the computer can't find the OS. As far as the  freezes are concerned I'm just stumped. Do I need to do an archive and install from the original Leopard disk and then upgrade with Snow Leopard?
    Thanks for reading.

  • MacBook Pro 3.1 boots up freezes then shuts down before sign in screen

I recently upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks and now my MacBook Pro 3.1 when Iturned on takes me to my login screen (sometimes other times even before the login screen) freezes up, I can't make the mouse cursor move and keyboard does not function then it shuts down and reboots over and over again

A 3.1 MBP is a 2007 15" MBP.  You indicate that you have a retina MBP.  Clarification would be helpful.
    Try SMC and NVRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
    Then try a safe boot:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
    Any change?
    Ciao.

  • MBP 10.9.5-Gray screen (post log-in) but can log into guest acc no problem

Background: MBP has been fine until today, when it got really slow. I figure I have too many windows open (specifically Safari tabs); I was also having weird freeze-ups with the VLC player. I restarted the computer after it was getting really weird; I keep it on the setting where previously open programs and files will reload when I log back in)
I've looked around at other posts but I couldn't find one that specifies the gray screen I seem to have. My gray screen pops up after I log in, and the top bar (finder bar?) is visible. My cursor can be moved but goes between its usual shape and the beach ball. The weird thing is that I started up in safe mode (which worked), and then when I tried to restart and log in again, the windows which I didn't close were viewable at the front of the gray screen. They were useless however, since I am unable to actually click anything on the gray screen.
    Things I've tried:
Restarting (often becomes force shutdown when I can't get the computer to respond)
Safe Mode (this works, but is really slow)
Disk Repair in Utilities (said everything looked OK)
And finally, I tried logging in on the guest account and everything seems to be fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this? Is there a way for me to erase the "save" setting that is remembering what applications I had up.
    Thanks for your help!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
