My PowerMac G3=Tons of Headaches

Hello All,
I have my beloved PowerMac G3, it is a Rev.1 Heartbreaker that i've done some upgrades too. G3 400 mhz-overclocked to 450 mhz, 1 Gig of RAM, 80 Gig Hard Drive, original ATI Rage128. This is my favorite computer of all the ones that i own......accept at the moment the PC is sounding kind of nice about now, lol. It has been Running strong since '99, never complaining once about a 7 year old PRAM battery. I've had a rather nice 9 gig Ultra2 SCSI drive and card in there, but the HD had recently passed away a few weeks ago :...(. And now I have gone through about a couple of weeks of constant problems, and me shouting profanitys at My PowerMac. I've managed to rig up my new Samsung 80gb HD on the IDE bus with my CD-Rom Drive(cd slave hd master)........and i dont think that was the best solution. Is the CD's IDE channel slower than the Ultra ATA channel? If so will that cause constant application quitting, and lots of kernal panics?I have reformatted and rienstalled panther a bazillion times and reset the PRAM a million times as well. I have also thourohly cleaned the entire computer and removed/added back in multiple components, and the blasted thing still crashes 5 to 10 times a day without fail. The Hard Drive now resides in the Zip bay, and the zip drive is now a fancy coaster for my desk . If the hard drive gets too hot will is crash applications and such? I cannot find an ATA controller with mac support for under 80 bucks in any computer stores in my area, or online. Is it possible to flash certain cheap PC cards to work?
any suggestions would be great,
Patrick.

Patrick,
Patrick, I purchased all my G3's used on ebay, and the previous owners might have fiddled around with the machines.
They all came with the short (about 6/7 cms long)80 wire IDE ribbon on the HD channel and 80 wire IDE ribbon on the CD channel.
Note that I experienced a number of problems with WD drives
both on beige and B&W macs. As a result I have a Maxtor and a Seagate on my B&W, because I could not get the WD to work in a master/slave configuration. Data corruption was happening every two seconds.....
With my daughter's computer I installed a chain of SCSI drives (2 x 9GB with the stock SCSI card), WD as a master and DVD Player as a master.
With all three B&W machines I also experienced RAM problems
(with consequent freezes, kernel panics and other bruises), and I had to extract all RAM chips from the computer and then install them one at a time, restarting every time to find out which chip was causing the problem.
==========
I have one last suggestion. I don't know if you already tried this, but in case you did not, it might be worth a try.
Did the machine give you the same type of problems with the processor running at 400 Mhz?
When I was experimenting with overclocking, I noticed that I could obtain sufficiently stable situations under OS9, but I could not achieve anything when trying to either install or run OSX.
I noticed this type of behaviour both on Beige and B&W machines and have a theory. I think that, because of the fact that OSX requires more computing power from the processor, it is very likely to generate higher temperatures, which can cause freezes, kernel panics and any other unruly behaviours you can think of.
But is this fails too, the go with Grant's and Jim's suggestion all the way as there are no other solutions to the problem.
Let me know if this is the case.
cheers

    Hello there,
    A few weeks ago I bought a new Toshiba laptop Satellite L350D-20F.
    Does somebody recognize my problem with this laptop; a constant *very high peep tone* that causes headache?
    It is not caused by loudspeakers but comes from the inside body of the laptop.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for any reply.

    try to mute mic and speakers
    if the sound is still audible this could be a broken coil on mainboard.

  • Decode function in Update statement

    Hello everyone,
    I'm trying to write a query where I can update a pastdue_fees column in a book_trans table based on a difference between return_dte and due_dte columns.
    I am using Oracle SQL. This is what I have so far for my decode function:
    SQL> SELECT
    2 DECODE(SIGN((return_dte - due_dte)*2),
    3 '-1', '0',
    4 '1', '12', 'Null')
    5 FROM book_trans;
    DECO
    Null
    12
    Null
    0
    So the logic is that if the sign is -1, the value in return_dte column should be 0; if it's +1 then it's 12 and everything else is Null.
    So now, I need to enter my decode function into the update statement to update the columns. However, I get error messages.
    The logic should be:
    UPDATE book_trans SET PastDue_fees = decode(expression)
    I've given it a couple of different tries with the following results:
    SQL> UPDATE book_trans
    2 SET pastdue_fees = SELECT
    3 DECODE(SIGN((return_dte - due_dte)*2),
    4 '-1', '0',

    6 FROM book_trans;
    FROM book_trans

    UPDATE book_trans
       SET
          pastdue_fees  = DECODE(SIGN((return_dte - due_dte)*2), -1, 0, 1, 12, Null);I took out all the single quotes. If you actually have a string column and you're storing entirely numbers in it then it should be declared as a NUMBER column and not a character (varchar2) column.
    ALWAYS use the proper data type, it'll save you a ton of headaches in the future.

  • Misinformed by a Verizon corporate store about Early Edge and now loosing hundred of dollars in order to get account straightened back out.

    In early November 2014, my husband and I visited a corporate Verizon store.  While at the store, we were presented with the option to do an "Early Edge" program.  My husband and I both opted to do the Early Edge program and were informed that it would be in our best interested to switch our data plan from 4 GB to 10 GB because it would be cheaper due to the larger discount on the line access charges.  He switched our plan on the spot in the store for us and we proceeded to do the Early Edge agreements.
    As part of the Early Edge agreement, the sales associate informed us that we would need to send back our current phones due to receiving a discount on the handsets when we signed the two year contracts with them.  This part was a little confusing for me because I signed my 2-year contract and purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 with that contract but was having a lot of problems with it, so I paid full retail price or "out of pocket" for a Motorola Moto X Designed by You that was active on the account when we signed the Early Edge Agreement for my phone number.
    The sales associate was adamant that I needed to send the Samsung Galaxy S4 back to Verizon after I received my new phone in the mail from the Early Edge program.  He was well aware that the Samsung Galaxy S4 was NOT currently active on my account as we talked about my Moto X being on the account when he pulled up the account.  So when my new phone arrived in the mail, I activated it and mailed back my Samsung Galaxy S4.
    At the end of November and into early December, I started receiving both text messages and e-mails from Verizon stating that I had not returned my device back to Verizon and needed to do so within the next 14 days.  Both myself and my husband called Verizon Customer Care (611 from our handsets) multiple times to try and figure out why we were getting these messages.  We were each told a wide variety of reasons why we were getting these messages.  One phone call my husband was told that the warehouse mixed up the bags our returned devices were in and it would be corrected by the warehouse.  Both my husband and I were told several times that both phones were indeed received, but it took 4-6 weeks for the return to be processed so we didn't have to worry about the messages.
    At the end of December, I received another e-mail saying I failed to return my device to Verizon and I would be charged a fee because of this.  I called Verizon Customer Care (611) and was told that I received this messages because the warehouse was expecting a Moto X back and received a Samsung Galaxy S4 instead.  I explained why I sent the Galaxy S4 instead of the Moto X and the customer care representative put me on hold as he spoke with his supervisor, then came back and told me I needed to return to the store where I signed the Early Edge agreement where they could change the phone that the warehouse was expecting from the Moto X to the Samsung Galaxy S4.
    My husband and I traveled an hour to the Verizon store where we signed the Early Edge agreement and were told by the store manager that it was impossible for them to change what phone the warehouse was expecting at a store level.  We asked that the store credit us the fee we were expecting to be charged for not returning "the correct phone" since we were mislead by a store employee, but the manager refused to help us with a credit or to even get the situation with the returned phones resolved.
    Exhausted and extremely upset, I decided to try one last hope and use the live chat feature on the Verizon website for help with the issue.
    Now, another issue on the account we faced was a $30 overage fee for going over our data plan in November.  We received a ridiculously high Verizon bill in December and when I examined it, I saw we were being charged for a "month in advance" on all of the charges on our account due to signing the Early Edge agreements, as well as $30 fee for going over our data.  It was never explained to us by the sales representative that our next bill would be higher than it normally is because we will be billed for a month in advance, so that was shocking to receive a bill almost $200 higher than our normal bill, and to have a $30 overage fee.  I called Verizon Customer Care (611) and asked about the $30 overage and she told me it was because we changed our data plan at a Verizon store in the middle of our billing cycle.  She spoke to her manager and was approved to give us a $30 bill credit on our next bill since the data plan change should have been back dated to the start of billing cycle to avoid things like a data overage.  So we paid the extremely large bill and when the December bill came, there was to no surprise, no $30 bill credit on our December bill.
    So, I waited about 10-15 minutes for a chat agent to become available.  I was connected to an Agent and typed out a lengthy summer of my issue of the missing bill credit to start and told him I had another more complicated issue to discuss after the bill credit.  It said the "Agent is typing a message" down at the bottom of the chat for a long time, I probably waited a good 25 minutes like an idiot before I attempted type another message but was unable to type anything.  While cycling through the open windows on my computer, I noticed there was another pop up from Verizon that said my chat was disconnected because of inactivity.
    I got REALLY upset at that point, and had to wait another 10-15 minutes to get into a new chat with a new agent since the other one timed out because the agent never said anything in my chat window.  I was connected with a very helpful and polite agent named Tiffany.  Long chat conversation made short, Tiffany promised to issue a $30 "instant credit" to my account that would take 10-15 minutes to appear and I needed to relog in order to see.  She also told me that I was supposed to send back the Samsung Galaxy S4 since I paid out of pocket for the Moto X and that she would forward the issue to her supervisor to get the Samsung Galaxy S4 accepted by the warehouse so I would not have to pay the fee for returning the wrong device.
    It is now January 10th, 2015, and my bill is due by 1/11/15.  There has still not been a $30 "instant credit" posted to my account as my bill amount has not decreased by a single penny since it posted to my account in December.
    About 30 minutes after I finished chatting with Tiffany, I received several text messages from Verizon informing me that the warehouse would be returning my Samsung Galaxy S4 to my residence and I needed to return my Moto X after that because it was the last phone active on my account when I signed the Early Edge agreement.
    I am EXTREMELY upset that we were misinformed by a sales representative at a corporate Verizon store and it is going to end up costing me hundreds of dollars because I chose to do a Early Edge upgrade and it really screwed up my account.  If I comply with what Verizon is asking and send back my Moto X, I am loosing the $350 dollars I spent to purchase that phone out of pocket plus the $30 dollar overage fee I was charged for a change the representative made on my account in the middle of the bill cycle.  If I refuse to send the Moto X back, I must pay a $250  fee (or higher) for not returning my device plus the $30 overage charge.
    I used to really enjoy being a Verizon customer, but now I feel completely scammed out of hundreds of dollars because Verizon as a company is refusing to make a wrong a store associate representing the company made back in November.
    This became A LOT longer than I intended it to be and I don't expect anyone to read it fully, so if you take anything away from this forum post (if it doesn't get deleted by Verizon), please take these thoughts away:
    Do NOT signed up for the Early Edge Program because it will do nothing but give you a ton of headaches, really screw up your Verizon account, and cost you a lot of money in the long run.
    Do NOT believe when anyone paid by Verizon tells you that you will receive any kind of credit on your account, it will NOT happen.
    Verizon Wireless will NOT fix any mistakes on your account made by the company itself; Verizon Wireless will come up with solutions on how YOU can fix the problems THEY created on your account, but none of these solutions will actually fix your account.
    If you are thinking of switching to Verizon from another company, DO NOT.
    Sincerely,
    an extremely disgruntled Verizon Wireless customer who WILL be switching to another carried once the mess of her account gets sorted out.

    I am going to tell you like I have been passing the word about this scam verizion is running with this edge program,basically they been getting our money from both ends,anyway that is how my lawyer explained it to me.I am taking them to court and will see where it goes.
    All I'm saying is read the fine print a couple of times because what there putting in print isn't true.
    My wife was such a great customer they gave her a couple lg tablets,she told them we got enough at home and they said but there free she said ok I guess if there free.
    Two months later I was getting charged and they been in the closet,they don't care about the customerand there liars.

  • My Itunes wont find my iphone after I updated to 10.7

    I updated to 10.7 and since then i haven't been abke to find my iphone. I go through my computer and I'm easily able to find it through my computer and device manager but not in itunes. I ran the diagnostics and it came back to tell me there was nothing there -.-'
    I then restarted my computer and my phone and plugged it back in through multiple usb ports but still no luck. When i go to itunes to check for updates it returns a message saying its up to date. When i close out of that window by chance another window pops up saying that an iphone has been identified but cannot be recognized properly, please disconnect and reconnect the iphone and try again. But when i do that nothing happens. I am trying my best not to unistall the software and reinstall it... Anyone else run into this issue? and if so any tips? I also looked through my services and all the necessary services are running properly. Thanks for your time guys!

    I hate to say it, but Apple is literally infamous for teething problems on new releases. It's usually fixed in two days, though that fix usually gets fixed, too, so sometimes a week, but does means downloading new updates.
    My (experienced) advice? Wait a couple of days, check for updates, try again. Pray (or whatever works for you) that you don't have the "lost Apple Device Driver" problem several people are having.
    I keep an older version of iTunes installer on a backup drive (or just in my downloads folder), just for such events. Worst-case, I've always been able to uninstall iTunes (including driver and user info), then install my old version of iTunes and roll on. Yes, my iTunes folder is on an external hard drive, so I can move it around to my different computers, and then keep a backup of that hard drive on a second external hard drive. Saves me a ton of headaches.

  • Fonts Not Available in Photoshop CS3 (Windows 7)?

    Hello,
    My desktop computer crashed yesterday and I had to run out last night and pick up a new unit as I'm trying to meet a number of deadlines (and not having much luck getting the work done in my laptop).
    The new computer uses Windows 7 as the Operating System.  It has already presented a ton of headaches... I've already spent in excess of ten hours trying to reinstall hardware and dealing with the various quirks that arise.
    The latest of these issues is that I cannot seem to access some fonts from Photoshop CS3.  I'm having the same issue, to a lesser extent, in Illustrator 10.
    For instance, after downloading the Helvetica and Helvetica Neue families in Windows 7, they do not appear in the Type menu in Photoshop.  There are a ton of useless pre-installed fonts there, but not the ones I installed.  If I try to access them from Illustrator, it displays only one weight of each typeface (for instance, it displays Helvetica Neue 65 but omits 55, 75, 95, etc....).
    The issue does not occur for all fonts.  For instance, I installed AvantGarde and it displays just fine.  In that instance, the fonts were TrueType whereas the Helvetica font files are Type 1 font files.
    Can anyone help?  I've already lost a day-and-a-half of work, and can't afford to spend much more time screwing around with this nonsense.

    Bill,
    Thanks for your thoughtul and thorough reply.
    To clarify, I do have a copy of ATM, but just have not installed it on my XP computer or this new one.  It is on my Illustrator 10 install disk.  Not sure if it will work on Windows 7, as Illustrator 10 would not run on the new computer until I set the compatibility to work with Vista and earlier.  I suppose that I could install it and see if it works.  Might be worth a shot.
    I will check out the software titles you referenced.
    With regard to font installation on Windows 7, there are three techniques as far as I can tell.  They are:
    1) Drag and drop method: Works the same as it always has.  Simply drag the typefaces into the Fonts folder or Control Panel > Fonts.
    2) You can navigate to where a font file is located (the desktop, for instance) and then right-click on it and choose "Install."  This is what I referred to previously, and I tried it after drag-and-drop did not work.
    3) For the third method (according to Windows 7 documentation I found online at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7desktop/thread/324ecdc6-8574-4527-8099- efc430bf550f), you are supposed to be able to go into the Control Panel > Fonts, press ALT (to display the menu) and then choose File > Install New Font.  You would then be prompted to navigate to the typeface you want to install.  However, this option is not available on my computer.  When I tried it, I can access the File menu, but "Install New Font" is not listed on the dropdown.

  • Where can I get an iPhone 3?

    I am moving to Vietnam for 8 months and am looking to bring a smartphone with me (I currently don't own a cellphone). I am NOT interested in the iPhone 4, 4S or 5 as I have been advised to only bring a 3G. I went into the Apple store and they were obviously not helpful as they just wanted to sell me a new phone. Does anyone know of a good source to get an iPhone 3/3G in good condition for a reasonable price?

    Adding to what tonefox has correctly advised:
    If you are afraid of getting mugged do not get a smartphone; get a standard throwaway, cheap phone on a local network when you get there. ANY smartphone (3G , 4, 4S, Galaxy) is bound to attract attention. If you still insist on getting the 3G please be aware that you will have to get a SIM unlocked phone (or one that is locked to one of the Vietnam carriers) if you plan on using a local carrier as your service provider, something logic dictates that you will do. If you plan on using a carrier from home, you incur HEFTY roaming charges that will break your budget.
    Many phones advertised on the Web (ebay) etc claiming to be unlocked usually are NOT or they have been hacked to unlock them; something that will bring a ton of headaches.  As to the map function, paper seems to work well.
    Your choice...

  • Dropped Frames & Firewire Busses - A Discussion

    A side discussion broke out on this recent thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=231733&tstart=0
    and because this discussion is OT to the thread, I thought it might be helpful to start a new on-topic thread.
    A number of FCP users have experienced dropped frames when capturing or outputting to tape while using a DV VCR/camcorder and a firewire drive for media on the same FW bus. There are many causes for dropped frames, but this discussion centers on the relationship between FW drives, DV devices, and using a single firewire bus.
    Some say that having the DV device and the firewire media drive on the same bus can be a cause of dropped frames with some systems. Others disagree. I'm in the first camp, so I'll leave it to others to explain the other side.
    I'm starting this thread to pick up where the side discussion on the thread linked above left off.
    In response to Hughes Video:
    If I'm reading your post correctly, my opinion is that your testing doesn't adequately address the real world situation. In practice, the FW port on the DV device is receiving data at 3.6MB/sec and buffering. Then it sends a data stream to the FW bus at about 12MB/sec, where is again buffered before being sent to the destination drive.
    The benchmark test results you noted don't predict what happens in the real world when capturing a DV stream from a VCR/camcorder to a FW drive. To do that, you need to be able to report in a time graph what the throughput is for every 1/30 of a second while capturing.
    I'm not sure that's what Adam Wilt has done, but he's told me that he's done thorough testing that proves the points he's made. I don't know what testing that entails.
    I do know, as I posted in the other thread, that when those who are having dropped frames separate the DV device from the FW drive on separate busses, their problems resolve. I don't know the technical reason for that, but I theorize that it has to do with the data moving and buffering in both directions on the same bus simulteneously. If the bus speed is decreased when both devices are on the same bus (whether daisy-chained or on separate ports), I don't know. But I know the problem resolves when you separate them.

    this begs the question though: how do users of an
    imac or a mini get around the limitations of one
    internal harddrive and one firewire bus?
    zeb
    They can't. iMac's are a consumer (and terribly sexy) computer. Make no mistake, if you are doing this for a living you need a PowerMac. Want less headaches with dropped frames and FW? Then take a closer look at better drives. G-Raid, Weibetech, and Granite Digital make the best out there, and invest in another FW 800 card for 'em. End of story.
    Want to avoid dropped frames forever and ever with any video format? Forsake FW drives for fibre. SCSI is dying a slow but steady death IMHO.
    Yeah, it all costs more, but you GET more (speed). Faster drives don't drop frames. Nothin' new there...
    There is a tendancy with new users of NLE's to cut corners. Don't do that, because it results in unhappy NLEing.
    Do I use FW drives? Of course I do, and use exclusively the above brands, I've clients who want to keep all media ever captured. (also a good idea) but I include in my invoices the cost of buying more FW drives to do the job. It works, I don't drop frames, have happy clients, and drop frame free system. I'm using the G-Raids for uncompressed storage and FW 800 Weibetech and Granite digital rigs for DV res storage. It works beautifully.

  • Official Apple repair services refuse to repair iPhone

    I have bought an iPhone in Barcelona. Now I have a hardware problem - the upper switch on/off button has stopped working (a common problem). As I a domicile in Moscow, Russia, I was explained that I am not entitled to a warranty. This is nonsense. This iPhone is covered by the warranty, so I have to be entitled for a worldwide warranty. If not, I am ready to pay for it. HOWEVER, the official service repairs REFUSE to repair my iPhone, even for money. I am a loyal Apple customer, I have FOUR officially purchased iPads in my family, and one officialy purchased iPhone, so WHY should I be refused in repair of one of many Apple devices? HOW can I repair it.
    Please do not advise me to "go to Barcelona" or "send your phone to Barcelona". I will not do it, I doubt anyone would.
    Please help me.
    Thank you and regards,
    Serge

    Obviously, you have done your research and you have found out that the warranty is not international and as your problem is with the mechanics of the phone itself the only thing you can do is:
    Got to Spain and/or send the phone to Spain. (or another EU country). The reality of the situation is that that is all you can do. Whether you decide to do it is up to you.
    Oh, and next time, buy the Phone in Russia. It will save you tons of headaches.

  • Search java code help

    I am writing a small Java program and need help using a simple search code. Here is the code
    public int indexOf(EltType e) {
            int i=0;
            for (i = currsize; i < currsize; i++){
                things[i] = e;
                e.equals(get(i));
            return -1;
        }Basically I want to search the array for e, and return its position, or -1 if e is not found. I know I have to use .equals(i) to compare e and get(i) but unsure where it goes.
    Here is the method that calls it:
    public void searchtester() {
            MyList<String> searchlist = new MyList<String>();
            searchlist.add("tangerine");
            searchlist.add("apple");

    sorry kevinaworkman, not trying to ignore any advice, just very new to java so trying to figure this out. It's okay, I just know from experience that breaking it up into smaller pieces will save you a ton of headaches.
    Ok so I would imagine that loop:
    for (i = currsize; i < currsize; i++)would run onceTake a look at the tutorial on [the for statement|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/for.html] . If i starts out equal to currsize, and is only ever incremented, when will it be less than currsize? But even assuming that the loop runs once, what good would that be? Wouldn't you want the loop to run as many times as there are elements in your array?
    things[i] = e;I'll give you a hint: if this line were executed, it would set the element at position i in the array equal to e. You want to check for equality, not set the whole array equal to e, right? Do you mean == in an if statement?
    e.equals(get(i));Again, if this line was executed, it would check for equality between e and whatever get(i) returns. But then what are you doing with that boolean?
    I want to see if i is equal to e then the result I want is the position of e and if i does not equal e then I want it to result in a -1, the issue is that it is giving me "-1" for all the results when I know that the first 3 items are in the list.You might want to step through your program with a debugger to see what's happening line by line. Or better yet, step through it with a piece of paper and a pencil. Go through the program as if you were the computer, following your program (and not the logic in your head you think the program does) exactly.
    Some other things you might want to consider: the [if statement|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/if.html] , arrays , and the above mentioned for loop tutorials.

  • New Hard Drive, New Snow Leopard, WRONG admin name

    My brother gave my dad his old macbook pro and I had a brand new hard drive and install of snow leopard done on it, BUT before he sent it out my brother set up a user id under his name to copy a few pictures on to the computer. I really want to GET RID of that admin and set up from scratch for my dad but without having to reinstall (since I just had that done professionally). Is there anyway to do the "setup" process all over without re-installing Snow Leopard.
    Thanks for any help

    If you've never used target disk mode, I would then transfer by disc. That amount of data through any network will be slow. I would use either DVD's or CD's depending on what type of superdrive is on that older mac.. more than likely it will have to be CD-R's. Once you have the discs go into the "home" folder and copy the "Library" folder (which has the keychain, preferences etc..) you may have to do them in segments since the Library folder can be rather large. So maybe copy in half segments (or whatever you can fit). But I will be honest, (because I deal with this daily) only transfer files, (songs, pictures, and documents) anything else that is coming from an old mac like that.. has no business being on a computer with Snow Leopard on it. They're two different kinds of architectures.. you will only be asking for problems. With a new computer it's best to start with a "clean" OS and only bring the kind of "files" I listed. It will save you from a ton of headaches.

  • Why does Firefox minimize itself upon launch. My husband is using Windows 8.1 with all recent updates.

    I am trying to find a solution to my husband's computer problem. Upon launching the Firefox browser it will immediately minimize itself to the bottom of the screen, sometimes it takes a few minutes to do this, but it always happens. This has occurred with Firefox since we purchased the new Dell computer 64 bit running Windows 8. We have received all of the Windows 8.1 updates for it, hoping that it would correct itself. It seems to only affect Firefox, not any other browser. It has the most current version of Firefox, but it has been happening for all versions. He also uses the Google Chrome browser and it doesn't happen with it. I hope someone can help us with this as it is getting very annoying. He has had the new computer for several months now. If more information is needed about his computer, please ask.

    What Firefox version is he using? If it's not current, you should update (for security, even if it doesn't fix this).
    This could be something to do w/ Windows and / or some other software installed. You could try starting Windows in safe mode, then start firefox.
    With this kind of problem, it's possible the Firefox program files got messed up. Ruling that out - by uninstalling - '''is faster than the addon troubleshooting''' steps below, so you may want to try uninstalling/ reinstalling first.
    '''PLEASE... backup your existing profile''', before doing anything. It'll only take a few min & can save tons of headache. Search support.mozilla.org or Mozillazine.org (not the same folks) for "how to back up profile." It's easy & something you should do, anyway.
    Uninstalling the Firefox program * shouldn't * affect your old profile, but you know how that goes.
    Sometimes weird things like that happen due to addons used (& maybe less often, plugins).
    Restart the browser in safe mode (search for: "mozillazine + safe mode", to see how).
    Don't select "make the disabling of addons permanent;" just hit continue.
    If it solves problem, you'll have to create another, new profile.
    First, just try the clean profile w/ no addons, to make sure it doesn't have the same prob.
    Start installing a couple of addons at a time, restarting as needed. Keep good notes.
    See if any addons cause the problem. If so, narrow it down.
    If you find one problem addon, don't assume the rest are OK, & install all the rest. More than one could be an issue.

  • Workflow for creating articles

    As I'm sure many of you have experienced, splitting a multi-page magazine and making each individual page its own InDesign document in order to build a FOLIO file is just a major headache. I'm doing this for a client who wants his publication on every single device that DPS reaches who also wants both orientations. So 40 pages for the iPad landscape, 40 pages for the iPad Portrait, 40 pages for Android and Kindle Fire, 40 pages for each iPhone... this is not fun.
    My workflow is that I create a whole document with 40 pages first in the resolution I want. For instance 1024 x 768 for the iPad. Then I save each page as its own InDesign document with eiter _h or _v after the filename. I have 240 different documents for the iPhone, 80 different for the iPad - that's 320 InDesign files for one book that the client wants in dual orientation. I'm sticking to the 1024 x 768 resolution for the iPad 3 because the files are a high resolution and for the Android/Amazon devices because 1024 x 768 will work with them, it'll just be letterboxed, which is fine.
    Is there a better way to do this? I'm pulling out the remaining hairs on my head!

    Keep building you're magazine as one single indesign document and then use Badia Exportools Standard (http://exportools.badiasoftware.com/selections/) to export each page as an indivdual indesign document, there is a small cost invovled ($59.99 USD) with Exportools but its worth the investment, Exportools has a really good renaming feature. I use this apporach and it saves me TONS of headaches and especially time. Good luck!

  • Guest account campus question

    I want to setup some application prefrences but still would like ot use a guest account -- how can I do this ?

    I have used a procedure similar to this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU-W2-_c5bA
    I found that I also needed to delete the contents of the Keychain folder from the English.lproj library, but NOT the folder itself to keep from having keychain issues, particularly with Chrome.
    All our students use the guest account and just log in to their Google account in Chrome once in.  It has saved us a ton of headaches.
    One caveat is that anytime you make a local account now, it will get whatever you set up in this procedure.  Which actually is usually better anyway.
    Hope this helps.
    Chic
