My rented moive will not play on apple tv

I have rented movies before through Aplle TV but now it is not playing. It tells me to go to the settings menu and select downloads, then check for downloads. But there is nothing in setting to do this.
There is a section to check for purhcased movies but this does not work. My interent seems to be working fine.

Hi Trindyl,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. Playback of rented movies is somewhat different than for purchased content. For the most part, rented movies can only be played back on the original device that it was rented from unless it was rented from a computer, and for computers transfers have other limitations. You may find the information in the following articles helpful, particularly this portion:
Where can I watch movies that I rented?
Mac or PC
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (with iOS 3.1.3 or later)
iPod classic, iPod nano (3rd, 4th, or 5th generation)
TV using Apple TV
Watch your movie on the device you used to rent it. If you rented the movie on your computer, you can move it to an iOS device or Apple TV (1st generation). To do this, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as much as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
To watch an HD movie, you need to play it on a supported device: your computer, iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or TV using Apple TV.
You can’t stream a rented movie from your computer to your Apple TV using AirPlay because it’s DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected content.

  • HT1390 Rented movie will not play.

I downloaded a movie I rented but my computer will not play it. I have the options of using VLC (default), MPlayerX and Quick Time 7. As it was downloading, it began to play and then stopped and wouldn't start again. I waited until the movie had totally finished downloading and tried to play it and I had no luck in seeing it begin. I've played more recently released movies before and had no trouble. This one was from the 1990s.  If it won't work, I'd like a refund.

  • Recent HD Movies will not play to Apple TV 2 on authorized computer

The Pirates: Band of Misfits (HD) will not play - get error message that it needs authorized computer - computer is the one used to purchase and is authorized and plays all other movies through AppleTV

This is definitely something to do with Apple TV, as my iTunes account is acting the way it should. I can even rent movies from my computer through iTunes. The problem lies in the AppleTV, they should allow me to atleast type in my credit card through the AppleTV just in case people run into a situation where they don't have a Mac lying around.
I know they are trying to simplify everything, but it's not always a good thing. Atleast give me the option to fix this through the device, instead of relying on it to auto-refresh.

  • Quicktime X will not play some Apple Mpeg 4 Movie Files

    Hi,
Having a strange issue.  Quicktime X will not play some of my Apple Mpeg 4 Movie files anymore.
The files open fine in Quicktime 7, but not Quicktime X.
I receive the error message "The document could not be opened. A required Codec is not available"
I have installed other codecs (Flip4Mac as well as Perian), but no luck.  Have re-installed Quicktime X (10.1) and software is all up to date (running Lion 10.7.2).  The movie file works fine if I import it to iTunes as well.
Called AppleCare Support and they could not come up with an solution.  Does anyone here have any ideas?
    Thanks!

(BTW, I just realized this was an MPEG-4 topic - my issue wasn't necessairly centered around that architecture)
Yes, I naturally assumed that you were having problems at some point with MPEG-4 Part 2 or Part 10 content.
Since I mentioned "from," I should have mentioned what the codec/wrapper was (it was captured into a .mov file using DV/NTSC via "Capture Now" in Final Cut Pro studio V7, via an analog-to-digital converter).  What makes this confusing is that files captured with the same settings sometimes open right into QuickTime X with their audio/video intact, and at other times, only the audio shows up (where upon opening that same file in QT 7, we can see both audio and video). Interestingly, the problem files icon shows up on the desktop as the generic movie icon, whereas the "normal" files' icon is the first frame of the video.
May we assume at this point that the source video data is DV-25 with 16-bit Interger (Linear PCM) audio sampled at 48.0 KHz and it is the scratch MOV file that may or may not open/play correctly in QT X but always opens correctly in QT 7?
Ultimately, though, this is an unimportant point in solving my issue. Why? Well, if I can successfully open the problem files in Compressor (e.g., see/hear the video/audio), then I can theoretically re-compress (or "re-wrap?") them to whatever codec I want - ideally one 100% compatible with QuickTime X.
I took a test file, placed it into Compressor, and applied the DV/NTSC setting to it (yes, I know, the same setting the file already had). After re-encoding (which took very little time), the file was perfectly executable in QuickTime X - both Audio and video showing as to be expected, and no real difference in quality (not that VHS source is quality to begin with).
This sounds as if the "problem" file's container may be the source of the problem. As I don't know if your Compressor test is passing the data through to a new faile container, I would make an additional test here. If your version of QT 7 is keyed for pro use, I would simply use the "Save As..." File menu option to to create a new file container. In fact, I would probably just create a "reference" file rather than another "standalone" file here—a very, very fast operation—and then open the secondary file in the QT 7 "Properties" window to ensure all of the data tracks (1 video, 2 audio, and 1 timing) are present. If all looks good, I would then try opening the reference file in QT X to see it it now plays. (I.e., whether you use a reference file here or a standalone file, the object is to see if the QT X player will now recognize all contained data tracks whether resourced by reference or physically contained in/via the new wrapper.)
Could this have been answered without knowing the complete "from" specs? Probably… which is why I posted to the help forum in the first place - the goal being some other reader may have had the same issue, and had a handy solution or suggestion, saving me the time of experimentation (what forums are great for).
I don't know about you, but I would still be looking at profile/level combination settings to see if an an assumed MPEG-4/AVC video and/or AAC audio settings had been properly encoded for QT playback.
I have no doubt that there's a technical difference between the files that created this issue in the first place. But, the solution of re-compressing with an identical codec did the trick, which for this project is good enough for me.
Recompressing data is slower than rewrapping data which is slower than rereferencing the data pointers. But, if your solution works, then that is all that matters.

I cannot get any iTunes player (iPhone, MacBook Pro, Apple TV, etc.) to play any Apple related content. iTunes radio does not play, movie trailers do not play, nada. Netflix works fine, so its clear that I am successfully connected to the internet. I logged into my iCloud account, that all looks fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Previously rented movie will not play!

I got Apple TV about two weeks ago.  We rented a movie last weekend, which took about two hours to download.  This was no big deal as this is about the standard length of time for an HD Movie.  I checked this week, and it showed the movie as "rented, 21 days remaining".  We sat down to watch the movie tonight and when we selected play, it said "ready to view in 2 hours 4 minutes". I thought once it was rented and downloaded( after the download is complete days in advance) you could watch it instantly.  Is this not correct?  Am I doing something wrong?  If not, this Apple TV seems ridiculous and a waste.

Unfortunately AppleTV does not keep a download of the movie until you watch it.
It downloads enough (and sometimes the whole movie) to a buffer and when it calculates it has enough to let you watch at your internet connection rate it will say you can.
It only has a small amount of internal memory so if you use it in the interim to do other things that cached portion gets wiped without warning.
I think this is porr too as they should have a Settings option to allow a warning if the cached portion will be deleted by an action, and then the ability not to delete it.
Apple assume with this product that everyone has fast internet.

  • Rented movie will not play on ipad2, cannot transfer it to itunes to watch on mac.

When I tried to rent the movie I quickly got a message about memory and now it only shows the "Stop" button on the movie, not the play button. My settings say I have 2.9G of memory free. There are no other applications running except for the Videos. I would like to watch the movie before it expires (7 hrs) but I cant even transfer it to my mac to watch.

Rentals made directly on the iPad can't be transferred to a different device.
Try searching for the name of one of your videos on the iPad's spotlight search screen - swipe your first homescreen to the right, type in it's name, and if it finds it tap on it to see if it plays.
If that doesn't work then try closing the Videos app completely : from the home screen (i.e.not with the Videos app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Videos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option if the two above don't work is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Movies on PC will not play on Apple TV

I have a 2nd Generation Apple TV connected to my home network wirelessly, and I have my home PC plugged in via ethernet. The Apple TV recognizes the computer, can go to the music or movies section, and can select something to play. But it just sits there with the loading screen indefintely. It works fine with my Macbook Pro and syncs just fine with iphones and ipads over airplay, but just doesn't seem to play nice with the PC.
The connection is good, the speed is fast all around. Any ideas? I cannot remember a time in 2 years that it would play movies from the PC.
