My time capsule is getting full.  What are my options?

I have a 1TB Time Capsule for the MacBook Pros of myself and my wife.  One MBP currently has ~420 GB on it (750 GB HD) and the other currently has ~180 GB on it (500 GB HD).  Nothing else is backing up to this Time Capsule, and no other files are stored on it. So my total HD data to be backed up is ~600 GB.
I have been getting "The backup disc is full" warning for some time on the larger MB.  It reports that older backups are being deleted and gives the date of the oldest backup.  Just a few weeks ago, that was a couple of months back.  But lately (been doing a lot of work on this machine) the "oldest" date has been coming closer to the present at an increasing rate.  Today the oldest backup is down to about 10 days in the past!
The Time Machine Preferences dialog informs me that there is 1.47 GB reamining available of 998 GB (nominal 1 TB size of the drive).  The other MBP is used MUCH less (by my wife) but it has had the same messages periodically, though her oldest b/u date is much further back still.  Time Machine Prefs report the same 1.47 GB available of the same 998 GB.
So, not entirely understanding how Time Machine apportions space when two computers are using the same Time Capsule, and not entirely understanding how the sequential, periodic backup works, I have some questions about how long I have before I reach the "dead end" of being told I can no longer store a complete CURRENT backup, and alos about what my options are.
To my uninformed mind, the roughly 600 GB of current data on the 2 machines SHOULD be albe to be contained in a 1 TB backup drive.  I do understand, however, that this backup strategy requires MUCH more space to be carried out as it is.  But I just don't understand exactly how this will play out.  Will Time Machine keep deleting "old" backups until it ONLY has a "current backup"?  It seems like there SHOULD be enough space for at least a little bit of past data for each machine it the total amount of data on the 2 HDs remains in the 600--700 GB range.
Obviously, my Time Capsule is living on borrowed time, and should be replaced with a nice, new 2 TB Time Capsule.  But I'd like to avoid that expenditure for a little while, if I can.  But I don't want to NOT be be backed up at least for my CURRENT data. Will that happen when my total data amount is still 2-300 GB less than the total size of my Time Capsule?
Are there any other intermim stategies?  Adding a second drive? (I believe I read Time Machine can't bridge multiple drives)  Is it possible to upgrade the drive in my 1 TB Time Capsule? (Probably is, but not sure I want to rely on a "home built" machine to backup my data).
If and when I eventually get the larger Time Capsule, it would seem obvious that, since I'll have precious little in the way of "old backups", I should probably just start fresh and  not transfer any data over.  But is there then any use for the old Time Capsule?  Can you have 2 Time Capsules in your network?  I assume that you'd have to turn of the Wi-Fi router (of the one that isn't connected to your internet source I suppose?) since you're just using the old Time capsule as a network drive.  I assume that one would then chose one for each machine.
Sorry this "question" is so long!  I'm thinking out loud a bit here.  But any insight about how the internal operations of this "black box" Time Capsule actually work, or any suggestions would be most appreciated.

First of all to understand the magic of TM.. read this.
http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html
If you move around a lot of large files the space is used very quickly.. even worse is having TM still backup a virtual disk from parallels or bootcamp or even some cloud store.
Anything that piles large files on the disk and changes them in a way that requires TM to backup the whole thing.. exclude it.

You might already be close.. TM needs a bit of free space to work with.
So you always want about 15% of the drive empty.
TM is like Apple.. winner takes all.. make sure the little guy gets nothing.
First come best dressed.
You can set sizes of the sparsebundles to make it a bit fairer.
See A8 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

It should keep deleting old backups but you will see it slows down and takes much much longer to handle backups.

Simple one.. plug in a USB hard disk.. 2TB 3TB even 4TB.. It cannot bridge drives.. but you can start a new backup on the USB or partition the USB and use it for both.. so when you buy the new TC.. you just plug the USB over to the new one.
You can also replace the internal disk .. it is not hard actually.. a standard 3TB drive is a great boost.
But only on Gen3. An early gen1 or gen2 will have the power supply fail due to the new hard disk taking too high a current to spin up.
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Lots of info around the web on doing hard drive upgrades.. I have done several . .no issues.
As long as you upgrade or figure out what the power supply is going to do.. !!

Always start fresh.. TM backups get messy after there has been loads of deletions.
Keep the old backups on the old TC for a while.. until you are sure nothing is likely to be lost. Then wipe the old one. As I said if it is Gen1 or Gen2 just sell it on ebay before it dies.
Gen3 can be worth keeping but you simply plug it in by ethernet to the New TC.. you can even leave the wireless on and setup roaming network.
But there are lots of variations.

What are my options for additional space on my startup disk??????
Previously I have copied my photos and documents onto disks to make more space.

    Hi deeswaz,
I would download and run WhatSize or OmniDiskSweeper, separately from each User Account, to make sure about some files that may exist somewhere, grown enormously with no reason to keep them on your hard drive.
    Also:
Does your periodic maintenance (aka "cron scripts") run regularly enough? If it never ran, your log files too can take a huge space in some cases.
    Caches:
You can delete Users caches folders to gain space. Use WhatSize or Finder's Find (⌘F) to locate them and drag them to the Trash.
They will rebuild themselves automatically (experiencing some small, harmless slowdowns sometimes), with nothing but the caches your applications actually use, not the old stuff that you don't use since months.
    Other:
    Of course the obvious:
Uninstall all that is useless. Did you Custom-Install Mac OS X, with only the printer drivers you need, with not all languages installed etc (keep BSDSubsystem though).
    Good luck!

  • My iMac's hard drive is almost full - what are my options?

My beloved iMac is running out of space inside
It says my hard drive has 232.57 GB, and that there's only 18.07 GB remaining. Eeek!
What are my options making more space on my hard drive? I know my biggest problem is iTunes, especially videos. My music library is taking up 6 MB, and videos 78 MB. I'm not tech-savvy in the slightest.
    Somebody help? Thanks!

Using the external drive for more storage works fine. You can use Apple's method for formally changing location of the +iTunes Music+ (which also contains your iTunes videos). However, I use a different way that I like better, because you are not changing the iTunes settings (and you can easily undo it).
    If iTunes is running, quit.
If you are using default settings, the +iTunes Music+ folder should be located at
    <user home folder>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/
First copy this +iTunes Music+ folder to the external drive. Now, you have it in two locations. Change the name of the original folder from +iTunes Music+ to +iTunes Music old+ (or some other name). Make an alias (short cut) of the NEW +iTunes Music+ folder on the external drive. To do this (in case you are not familiar with using aliases) select the NEW +iTunes Music+ folder in a Finder window and
menu bar > File > Make Alias
or drag the folder while holding down Option-Command. You should see the curly arrow next to the icon indicating an alias will be created where you drop it.
Place the alias in the original location of the +iTunes Music+ folder (where you changed the name to +iTunes Music old+)
    <user home folder>/Music/iTunes/
and name it exactly +iTunes Music+ (if you need to rename it). You are making the alias replace the original +iTunes Music+ folder, and have it point to your new +iTunes Music+ folder on the external drive.
When you run iTunes, it should be accessing your new +iTunes Music+ folder on the external, but you are able to keep iTunes using the default settings. To prove to yourself that the new +iTunes Music+ folder is being used, do something like rip a new CD or download a free song from the iTunes Store. Then check that the file ended up on the external drive. You can also do a +Get Info+ on any song or video (in iTunes) and verify that the file location is on the external drive.
(If something goes wrong, just get rid of the alias and rename +iTunes Music old+ back to +iTunes Music+.)
Once you are confident that all of your files are accessible and being accessed from the external drive, you can delete the old +iTunes Music+ folder on the internal drive.
    Separate point...
You should also get another external drive that is at least as large as the filled space on your internal drive and your current external drive. Twice as large would actually be better. So if you have two 250GB drives that you plan to have at most 75% full, a 750GB external drive would be ideal. Then, you can use Time Machine to back up both your internal drive and external drive, to the new external drive. Getting an external drive with both FireWire and USB 2.0 would give you the most flexibility.

  • RAID almost full, what are my options

Hi we have a xserve RAID 5.6TB with 14 x 400Gb drives, set up as RAID 50.
We are now getting to the stage where the RAID is getting quite full and need to start planning how we deal with this with the minimum disruption and cost, what are our options?

The short answer is "you can't" and the longer answer is "maybe you can but you shouldn't".
If you did find another Xserve RAID with 400GB drives in it you maybe could create a giant RAID 0 from the underlying RAIDs but the potential for data loss with some many moving parts underneath would make it IMHO unacceptable. And even if you did get that to work you would need to restripe the new RAID and wouldn't be able to just "expand" the current one.
As usual William is right. Your best option is to buy a larger capacity box like a Promise RAID and migrate your current data to it. The next best option would be to see if you can find 16 Xserve RAID compatible 750GB PATA drives and replace your 400s. But this would require backing everything off and then restoring the data AND those drives are getting very hard to find.
Sorry the news isn't better but mixing too many or mismatched (in terms of speed and/or size) parts into a single volume is bad idea AND without a fancy filesystem designed to expand endlessly it's hard to keep the same volume going perpetually. As a performance issue you really do want to limit how many simultaneous writes you're doing on a single journaled HFS volume. Since every change needs to get written to the journal if there are too many changes the journal can become a performance choke point. While this is more a function of use and number of users a single 9TB+ volume would hold the potential for this kind of conflict.

  • My battery life is getting low, what are my options?

I've had my iPod touch, 3rd or 4th Gen, now for 3 years. When the battery gets low, I plug it into a radio dock that charges while playing music. For the past few days, I will acheive a full charge, take it off the charger, and whether I use it or not, the battery only seems to last 3-5 hours, where it could last upwards of two days  if I wasnt using it, but it was still on. Is it possible or practical to get a new battery or is there some app that I dont know about that will get rid of background apps that are running, or should I cut my losses and trade in for a new one? Anyone else suffer this problem? Otherwise, I am not experiencing any problems, besides the occasional blocking from Facebook app (it wont load Facebook the first time I press it, it will just start, then take me back to the home page. 3 out of 5 times I have to load up Facebook twice to get it to work). Oh! And its bee hiccuping my wifi as well, *i have a wifi signal, then I lose it, then it comes back, all within a matter of a few seconds)

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use an Apple-supplied wall.mount charger and charge overnight.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • What size Time Capsule - i.e. how big are Time Machine Backups

    Hi all,
Just trying to decide which Time Capsule to get...my question is basically how big are Time Machine backups.
For example I have a MacBook with 100gb harddrive. At the moment about 80gb in use.
I assume the Time Capsule will immediately backup that 80gb but how big are the incremental backups. If I modify about a GB's worth of data each day, does this GB get moved to the capsule or is Time Machine cleverer than this and only backups the changes at byte level for example.
Any pointers, thoughts, etc. much appreciated.
    Michael.

I have an iMac with a 500GB hard drive and a MacBook with an 80GB hard drive. The MacBook is nearing capacity but the iMac has around 90GB of data (the Time Machine backup is around 93GB). I will likely opt for the 1TB version as I am eligable for a Government discount bringing the cost down to £303 (£183 for the 500GB version). As it's unlikely that it will be easy to upgrade the Time Capsule HDD then I'm looking at future proofing as I do not want to have to repurchase in a few years. I'm also likely to buying a second MacBook or MacBook Pro in the coming months so it does make sense.
Secondly, you can use the Time Capsule as a shared storage area as well as for the Time Machine function.

  • When setting up my Time Capsule I get an error message that another device is using my computer's IP address.  What can I do about this?

When I am setting up my new Time Capsule I get a pop up window that says another device is using my IP address and I have to change it.  My time capsule will not work or connect to the Internet.  I assume that is why.  Everything is plugged in as should be.  I also have a wireless DVD player and my DISH network plugged in to the Ethernet of the Time Capsule.

You need to do the setup of the TC before you plug it into the network.. you obviously already have a router, so set the TC up as bridge device.. in airport utility/internet tab/connection sharing.. off bridge mode.. then you can plug it into the network and whatever is main router will do its job properly.
If this is not the case, then you have a static IP setup somewhere.. or another dhcp server.. track down and remove it.

  • When doing a restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing

    Hi,
When doing a full restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing. This happens with all recent backups. Also after doing a verify/repair of the TimeCapsule disk.
This is a dissaster for my originals (my Ableton Live projects). I am very dissapointed in TC and TM at this moment, because I trusted my backup system in combination with my MBP fully.
    Please help?
    Best regards, Tom

    Hi Pondini,
Sorry for the late response, but the problem was something else and were two separate ones.
Somewhere along the way the TC backup couldn't find backup to the original TC volume, that's why I let TM backup towards my user volume named 'Tom'.
When I wanted to restore the root of my drive when selecting the diskname and 'Restore' in any point in time, this resulted in error -8003 in the activated TimeMachine.
Then I tried to do it via the recovery OS and even via the original OSX DVD. Both not enabling me to select the TC volume named 'Tom'. Then I remembered that I first backed-up onto the original 'TimeCapsule' volume/partition. When I copied the sparsefile to the 'TimeCapsule' partition, I was able to recover the entire disk using the recovery OS.
All my files are backup and I am a happy Mac user once again :-)
    Thanks & Regards, Tom

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
