My top sites no longer display/update...is there a setting I need to set?

My links on the tabs page lost their images and now are blank. I suspect a setting got changed, but which one(s)?

Your System Details List shows that you are in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history), so that is the likely cause.

  • My "top sites" no longer display and I cannot make new ones appear. Why?

I used to have Top Sites capability where my favorite websites were displayed as icons on one page so I could easily click the icon and go to that page. They disappeared in the last month and I cannot get them back nor can I create them again using the "add to top sites" tool at the top of the page. Why?

Do you mean the about:newtab page or a special page created by an extension?
See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

  • 'Top Sites" no longer updates...

I'm not sure why, but the 'Top Sites' feature no longer updates. I then tried to close all the little windows, but now nothing shows up at all. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi, burdell2.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you no longer see updates to the Top Sites feature in Safari.  Try clearing all Safari data and then test the Top Site feature.  If the issue persists, make sure that this option is selected in Safari preferences.  Here are a couple articles that will walk you through this process.

  • Safari Top Sites thumbnail images not updating automatically?

is it happening just with me, or the automatic update of the Top Sites thumbnail images is not working anymore?

It is intentional. When on the Top Sites view, hit Command+R to refresh the images. Supposedly this was done because the previews don't do a good enough job of detecting weird login pages and wifi password pages.
Personally, I'd like it to have an option to go back to updating the images on its own again.

  • Top Sites no longer available on my iPad

Have iPad for over 1 year and a feature I loved was the top sites on safari, touched button in toolbar and a screen with 12 minature screens came up - now this is no longer there - can anyone help?

Thanks Carolyn - I am really disappointed to see this feature removed on the latest iPad software. I have submitted my views to Apple but I do consider this a backward step and would love to see it make a return soon!!!

  • Secure sites no longer display the lock symbol in lower right corner, how do I verify the security of a site?

On previous versions when logged onto a secure site a green lock symbol appeared in the lower right hand corner of the page. Since downloading the most current version of Firefox, this is no longer displayed. How then do I confirm the site I am on is encrypted?

The Statusbar is gone in Firefox 4.0 ''(six months ago)'' and the "lock" with it. Security information about a web page is shown by the Site Identity Button.<br />
The old padlock could give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site and only showed that there is a secure connection that didn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. The Site Identity Button was introduced in Firefox 3.0 to show more complete "identity" information for HTTPS web pages. <br />

You can add a padlock to the location bar with the Padlock add-on- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/padlock-icon

  • Top Sites won't allow update (Safari 5.1)

I cannot for the life of me add a page to my top sites.  I have two windows open: one is "Top Sites" prepped for editing, the other has the URL of the website I want to add to "Top Sites".  I highlight the desired URL and drag it over the Top Sites page, and nothing happens.  I have unpinned selections on Top Sites, I have tried dropping the URL on those, at the top of the page, at the bottom of the page, in the URL  field at the top of the window (which takes me to the page - bad).  Nothing.  What am I doing wrong?  Or, is it NOT MY FAULT?!

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
    Restart your Mac.
Launch Safari Try adding a page to Top Sites.
This is for Safari 4 / Top Sites but might be help there you can use >  http://arstechnica.com/apple/guides/2009/02/safari-4-focus-top-sites-browser-in- a-nutshell.ars
    I doubt it's your fault.

  • Address Book - downloading vCard no longer displays updated/new contact

On 10.5.6 and earlier, if I had an option in an application to Download a users vCard, I could click it, be given the option to add, review or merge with an existing contact. Address book would display the new/updated contact for verification/editing.
On Snow Leopard 10.6.1 (Address Book 5.0), everything pretty much works the same except I am not taken to that new/updated contact. I must manually scroll or search for the contact to see if it is acceptable. With 1500+ records, it is kind of a drag.

    Add me to this problem:
Not only is the new contact not displayed, it's placed in the Last Import group, and there's no way to remove it. Deleting from that group deletes the record in ALL GROUPS.
Subsequent vcf/vcard downloads are simply added to Last Import, along with previously imported records.

  • I have an iMac using the app numbers.  Can't open spreadsheets because program is telling me I need to upgrade my numbers application but app updates is telling me it is already updated and there is nothing I need to do.  What can I do?

Cant open Iworks-Numbers application.  Computer is telling me I need to update numbers application in order open spreadsheet.  Progran is already updated.  This problem started yesterday.  Any suggestions?  Sounds like many other users are having the same problem.

Are you launching Numbers from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Numbers from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

  • Safari Top Sites Not Updating

My Top Sites is not self-updating. I no longer get the 'star' notice when a web page has been changed and the image shown on Top Sites is from my last visit to the site.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with the Top Sites thumbnails not updating themselves (without having to manually visit the site). It had been working, but now it has not for a couple months. I forget if it coincided with updating Safari to 4.0.5 or not; it seemed like it was right around that time.
I should also mention that my internet connection and setup have remained consistent from the time that it was working to now. I am not behind a firewall or proxy of any sort.
(Note to Jared_Dub: The blue star is shown on thumbnails that you placed there manually as opposed to your most visited pages which Safari automatically places. It has nothing to do with showing you if there have been changes to the page or not. Just thought I should clarify that point.)

  • Yosemite safari top sites not updating

Now that I am hooked on using Top Sites, it has stopped updating since I updated to Yosemite. Is there some setting I need to change? Sure can't find it in Pref

I found the way to solve this problem for me. It's simply and quick. Just switch of Safari option in iCloud config at my iPhone. Now Top Sites works fine on my MacBook.

  • No updates for Top Sites after PR 1.1 update

My 'Top Sites' list is never updated after PR 1.1.
I have permanently only 6 predefined Nokia pages visible.
I tried different web connections but problem remains.

Hi, I have a similar problem. The update seemed to run fine, but I also noticed no signal. I power cycled it and it gave me the plug into itunes screen, upon doing so I get a screen that says there is a problem with your iPhone, it may be damaged unable to activate. I just returned from the apple store and have been told that the IMEI numbers do not match. I was told the only was this is to happen is if the software has been altered "illegally". I have never ever hacked the phone or any other alterations to the software. I've done every official update released up until now and have never had a problem. They are now telling me to send it in and if they find that the software has been altered they will ship it back unrepaired and the warranty will be void. I will ship it in and see what happens. Hopefully this helps.

  • What has happened to the blue star in Top Sites?

I recently updated from Safari 6.05 to 6.1 on my Macbook Air running OS 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). I can live with the drab new look of Top Sites — not that I seem to have much choice in the matter. A feature that appears to have vanished, and which I greatly miss is the blue star in the upper right corner on the web pages in Top Sites which indicated a change in the web page since my last visit. Top Sites no longer appears to scan the pages; what I see now is the appearance of the page the last time I visited. Is there any way I can reactivate this function?

It should update the page automatically.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/TopSites.plist
Click Go then move the TopSites.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari. See if pages update automatically in Top Sites.

  • Safari Top Sites Blue Stars Missing

As of yesterday, Top Sites no longer shows the little blue stars when a page is updated. I can force them to appear if I quit Safari and restart it, but they won't update on their own as they used to periodically, even though the thumbnails still update. I tried using time machine to replace the app file and preferences from several days ago, but this hasn't solved the problem. Any ideas?

    Hey guys.
Need to join the desperate team. My Top sites wont allow any other manually added site - it will get deleted right after i restart safari.
I have checked the other forums where were suggestion for binning the com.apple.safari and top sites plist - doesn't work. Standard cleaning procedure like emptying cash, reseting safari or not too standard binning some preferences files - not working. None of them is in banned sites - i binned it also
I need to add its a new thing because it was working until last week. Maybe some updates could damage something, though i can remember any new updates in last two weeks. Please be geeks, find the answare, it was very cool feature and its pitty its not working.

  • Why do my Top Sites keep changing in Safari 7?

In spite of diligently pinning my desired websites and their locations on my Top Sites, when I re-open Safari there is hardly a trace of these efforts to be seen. What's the deal, how can I fix this?
    Many thanks,
    Christine

Most likely it Windows Media Player changing the tags. Playing a song in iTunes will then update iTunes with the new tag info.
Open WMP and go to Tools -> Options - Library and uncheck everything.
