My volume is being stupid !!

My iphone also has the no sound fault, no key click sounds, no video noise, no volume dots appearing. Been that way intermitently for a couple of months. Today i planted the phone onto a 'radio-cd' with an idock and played music through the radio, fine. When i removed the phone from the radio the sounds had all returned to the phone. However it didnt last long, an hour, then the sound had gone again. I cant see it being the charger port on the phone because when i then plugged the mains charger in and gave it a good wiggle the sounds did not come back but as soon as it was connected to the radio dock &  video/music was played & then removed the sounds worked again. Will repost when i find the answer, long term hopefully.

With a broken screen, there's no telling what other damage to the device has occurred as well. It could very well be related but you should probably have your device checked by Apple and possibly repaired.

  • Hum.... being stupid? can't restart from CD

right... I think that I am being stupid...
Had a mac for a few years now, and there I thought that restarting from the disc would be easy....
I get this weird error on my macbook:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
So I am trying to reboot from the disc to repair permissions on my disc....
But I cant!!! insert the disc, restart from disc, holding c or changing the startup disc, and OSX keeps on starting up... can't get it to reboot from it..
    HA!!!!!!!
Yes I could purchase DISKWARRIOR, but I could also try and save $90 (ish) , and I would love to know what I am doing wrong here...
    Just don't get it....
    Anyone?

Hi, i thought that I replied this morning, but obviously I hadnt.
Put the disc in, restart the machine holding C until the apple logo comes up and the little circle goes around, release the c key, machine takes some little time, and the disc is spinning, so I am guessing that it is starting from the disc, blue screen and Mac OSX starting with the progress bar, then that goes off, and OSX installer kicks in, asking me for language to use, and then the install wizzard. and thats it....
If I try and go through the wizard, it falls apart telling me that it can't install OSX on this volume (so it must be started from the disc), then prompts me with a start up disc, I can clearly see both my internal drive and the cd in the list, I choose the disc, click restarts and it does the same over and over... keeps going back to the installer...

One day, being stupid, I used my Comcasst email account to be my backup email account in case I forgot my security questions. Well I did. I did not know that Comcast deleted your email when you disconnected with their service. When I ask for my security answers, it sends it to that email. How do I fix what I've done? Because now, I can't download apps that I have to pay for.

  • How do I stop the main volume slider being controlled by external hardware?

    Hi
I really want to STOP the main volume slider in Logic 7.2 from being controlled by the main output volume knob of my Novation A-Station (external hardware synth).
How do I just STOP that slider in Logic from responding to ANY midi messages?
    Cheers!

Thanks - but i'm not clear on this.
Is there a simple way of just stopping a slider or other control (like PAN for example!) from being controlled by MIDI ? I just want to be able to choose the thing in Logic and tell it "NO!! you will not be controlled by anything other than my mouse!!"
I now notice that another knob on my Edirol Keyboard is controlling the main track PAN in Logic!

  • Password on encrypted volume not being "forgotten"

I've set up an encrypted disk image (sparsebundle) and written a short bash script to simulate the old-style FileVault (to protect just a single account.)  It uses a folder within the encrypted volume as the home folder of an account that I use for sensitive information.  While it took a little while to get the permissions/ownership right on the volume and image, it works fine.  The other tricky part was that I have the script close the volume after it detects the account has been logged out -- I discovered I needed to wait a while for the logout to complete before closing the volume (otherwise it seemed like the system was trying to read or write from the volume even after "who" showed the account was logged out, and so it created a new home directory that confuses things.)  Now, the "problem" I have is this.  The first time the script opens the encrypted volume the system of course asks for the password.  Thereafter unless I reboot (logging in and out of the non-protected account I start the script from doesn't help) and possibly after a *long* time, tthe system seems to be remembering the password to the file -- on subsequent uses of the script the volume is opened without me being asked for the password.  I have examined carefully what I do when entering the password to make sure it's not saved in the keychain -- and indeed it isn't (verified by looking at the keychain).  Does anyone have any idea where the system (presumably the Finder) is saving the password and how to get it to "forget" it?  (I just realized I haven't checked to see if the password is "remembered" system-wide or just in the un-protected account.)  I've looked in both the system and account set of caches and nothing is obvious (all the finder cached data is in a single database, presumably in some obscure format.)

Some more experiments.  Since I was using the encrypted image to simulate FileVault, I put the image in the /User directory (which is where the old FileVault put its image for an account.)  This time I created another encrypted sparsebundle in a directory on my desktop -- the system did *not* remember the password for it (I had to enter it each time I opened it.)   More interestingly, diskutil *knew* about and remembered the image I'd put in /Users, but not the one on my desktop.  Diskutil even said that the volume inside it was an unmounted (encrypted) partition.   So it appears the system is "remembering" images that are in the /User directory -- I have no idea if there are other directories (say, /Library) where it would be remembered too.  But the "memory" has something to do with the live system -- since if I restart, the "memory" is lost.  Whether it is kept in some none-obvious place in the file system that disappears on shutdown or restart or just in virtual memory I of course don't know.

  • Nike+ Challenges - Am I being stupid?

Ok, after having a rather problem free first week it appears I am suffering all the problems this week! As I posted in a different thread, I received the ‘server’ error message last night when I updated my run. It did ultimately add the run to My Runs, however I have found the following problems:
    • It has completely wiped my Goals.
    • This run has not been registered as my best (by default as my only!) 10K in My Records.
    • It has only counted towards one of the three relevant challenges that I am participating in at the moment.
The first two problems appear to me to be issues with the website rather than the kit or user error. As for the third – I have been diligently reading these forums for the last week or so and have found nothing to suggest I am doing anything wrong or having incorrect expectations in relation to any workout populating the challenges.
Can anyone clarify why a single run does not populate all relevant challenges or point out my obvious stupidity?!? I would just be grateful to know
    Thanks,

Nobody knows at this point what is going on with the Challenges--or for that matter with the "Best Run."
The XML files for the individual runs are easy to read with TextEdit and easily moved from the Synched folder back to Latest. You don't have to be a geek to do that. Challenges and Best Run are handled by Unix Executable Files on the Nano therefore we can't see what information is being sent to Nike+ from the Nano.
Any techie types out there who know something about Unix Executable Files?

  • Printing to windows printer via mac - am i being stupid?

I really don't get this. I've just bought my 1st mac, a macbook pro, to replace my old windows laptop. I also have a windows pc, with an Epson USB printer attached to it, as well as the windows desktop being connect via ethernet to a netgear wireless router/modem. When i have the windows laptop i could print wirelessly via the windows desktop without problems, with the mac! no chance. I can connect to the windows desktop wirelessly so long as i connect via the finder/go/connect to server option as it doesn't show under finder/shared sidebar, but can't access the printer. I installed bonjour for windows today but running the printer wizard on the desktop doesn't show any bonjour printers, yet the printer is connected directly to the desktop via usb. Am i misunderstanding what this is all about. I just want to print from my mac, wirelessly via the PC. And yes the printer is shared.
Can anyone advise, I'm really at a loss

Hi iVirtual, what Mac OS are you running, Leopard (10.5.4) or Tiger (10.4.11)? Also, is your printer directly attached to your pc or is it a network printer directly on the local area network? One last question, do you have a firewall (like Trend Micro or Norton Internet Security) on your PC?
From my Mac running Leopard, I have no problem printing to a printer directly attached to my WindowsXP machine. However, I don't have the same luck from my Tiger Machines.
When I print to any networked printer (by that I mean printers directly attached to the network) from the WindowsXP machine with SP3, I always have to use the IP address. The printer.local name no longer works since I installed SP3.
simonparker, If your printer is directly attached to your PC using a USB cable, I don't think you'll be able to see it with the Bonjour Printer Wizard application. Since your printer is shared, you might check your WORKGROUP name on your PC. Something you might check is this:
Do you have a password on your user account on the PC? You'll probably need a password on your PC account. I don't think you can share anything if you don't have a password (I could be wrong, but it has never worked for me without a password).
On leopard, when I added the printer to the Mac I did this:
    1) bring up System Preferences/Print&Fax
    2) Press the + sign under the printer list, when the add window pops up, choose the "Windows" icon and you should see your workgroup name in the left list.
    3) Choose the workgroup and it should populate with your machine name.
    4) Select the machine name in the middle list and you should get a login and password dialog box.
    5) Enter your PC's Username and Password.
    6) You should see a list of shared printers in the right most list.
    7) Select the printer and then select the driver.
Your printer should now be configured on the Mac. I know that I had to enter my PC's user name and password several times before I could print.

  • Is there a way to prevent a Windows Logical Disk Manager volume from being automatically mounted?

Lion is automatically mounting two LDM partitions from BootCamp, doesn't find a valid filesystem, and then asks to format or eject them, every time that the system boots.
How do I go about preventing these disks from being automounted?
They don't display UDID's, so I'm unsure if I can hide them using fstab, unless fstab supports the old disk-based specification that it used to.

Although the little camera I was using doesn't capture 16 bit, I did run the jpgs briefly through ACR to try out the shadows/highlight feature since the photos were perfect candidates. My preference there is to convert to 16 bit ProPhoto so maybe--even though the files opened as jpgs. That might be the problem: maybe bit depth is the trigger for psd assignment. Still, I wish there was a way to disable it.

  • /VOLUMES/ not being recognized properly

For years i have been using NetInfo Manager to change the location of my home folder to a different partition (this facilitates easy re-installation of the OS when needed). Tonight while doing some house cleaning i noticed that my Mac OS X partition had a folder called VOLUMES present on it. Inside this folder were two alias', one to each of my partitions. I had no idea how the folder got there, and deleted it assuming they were remnants of a program gone awry. As soon as that happened the finder crashed and restarted. Upon restart all of my preferences were gone, and the OS was pointing to a newly created VOLUMES folder on the Mac OS X drive as my home folder. I went into netinfo manager and everything was fine:
When I go to Computer I can see both of my partitions, and all of the data is still there:
but for some reason my OS still thinks the folder in my Mac OS X partition is the true VOLUMES directory:
I suspect that my system has been running like this for months, and that I disturbed it by deleting those Alias', but I have no idea how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jeff,
fstab isn't an issue. First BACKUP the drive Internal that shows on your Desktop. Then run Disk Utility and repair the drive Internal (not repair permissions).
HFS+ is case insensitive but case preserving. The only way that the directory VOLUMES could be created is if the directory Volumes was missing from the root directory. The uppercase spelling of the directory Volumes may or may not be problematic.
OS X follows the traditional Unix file system hierarchy. An upside-down tree starting at the root and directories that branch out. Other media is mounted in the Volumes directory. The Finder presents the Carbon file system hierarchy. Many trees in the forest, each represented on the Desktop. When you look at the file system in the Finder, the Volumes folder shows the media as individual "trees" as aliases or symbolic links.
I'd be inclined to re-install the OS without preserving your present user settings. This time when you edit NetInfo
change the property home to the value /Volumes/Internal/Users/Jeff . You might put a symbolic link in the /User directory. Or you could mount Internal/Users in the /Users directory (you would need to enable fstab in NetInfo -instructions can be found at MacOSXHints).
Another option is to start your computer in single user mode. Then run a file system consistency check (Disk Utility):
    fsck -fy
    Mount the root file system:
    mount -uw /
Make sure that you are in the root directory and create a directory saveduser:
    cd /
    mkdir saveduser
Navigate to the VOLUMES directory and move the directory Internal to saveduser:
    cd VOLUMES
    mv Internal /saveduser
    Rename Internal 1 to Internal:
    mv Internal\ 1 Internal
    Now reboot with the command:
    reboot
If all is well you can then deleted the saveduser directory. I'd first check it for any data that you might want to save.
    Good Luck

  • I'm being stupid, how do I check my local IP?

I'm just trying to figure out my local IP, and it's really not working out because of my apparent stupidity.
Is there a way to find it in system profiler, or do I have to use a shady Terminal backdoor that I can't trust?

OK, I'm not sure what it is that you're looking for...
I'm assuming that you are connecting to the internet using a router - and on a network where multiple computers are using the same router.
The IP address returned by the Network Utility is the private IP address on the internal interface of your router.  I imagine it's something like 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.1.1, etc.  Every computer inside the network will have a similar address.
Based on your comment that "I have a stupid wifi ip that makes the internet see a fake ip for all computers on it" I'm assuming that your router is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to allow all the computers on your network to share a single IP address on the external interface (the part that faces the world).  In such a case, that is your IP address and the router is keeping track of the mapping from inside to outside.
So, if neither of these it what you think you are trying to find, then you're going to have to provide more information...because at the moment I'm not sure what it is that you want.

  • Generics bug or just me being stupid?

Heya, does anyone know why this doesnt work?
       @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
       private Map.Entry<String, Map<String, Serializable>> safeCast(Map.Entry<String, Serializable> entry)
          if ((entry.getValue() instanceof Map<?, ?>) == false)
             throw new ClassCastException();
          return (Map.Entry<String, Map<String, Serializable>>)entry;
       }Gives me:
    MoniterMessage.java:45: inconvertible types
    found   : java.util.Map.Entry<java.lang.String,java.io.Serializable>
    required: java.util.Map.Entry<java.lang.String,java.util.Map<java.lang.String,ja
    va.io.Serializable>>
return (Map.Entry<String, Map<String, Serializable>>)entry; It is a tree-like structure, a map can contain either Serializable objects or instances of Map. If the entry is an instance of map we want to add it to the folders list etc

    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    private <T extends Map<String, Serializable>,
Serializable> Map.Entry<String, T>Here, you are creating a type parameter called Serializable. I guess you don't want to do that.
Generics should save you from casting, instanceof, etc. If you want the thing in your map to be both Serializable and Map, say so:
<V extends Map & Serializable, T extends Map<String, V>>(or something like that - I don't have the time to test it right now)

  • Itunes is being stupid - help!

recently (as is all year) itunes has been telling me it can't locate my music. 60% is in my music folder in my files, and when i locate one from there and then check "use this folder to locate other files" it says it couldn't locate any of my 1500+ songs. and i'd rather not go through all and locate each single one. It also does it to CD's that i have imported. It says i can't find them and the only way it can is to put the cd back in and locate them one by one. This is especially annoying because lots of the cd's i have on my itunes i cant find or dont have anymore. i'll put a new song in there from my downloads, then the next time i open it it will say it can't find it.
No, i have not moved anything. I have deleted a handful of songs from my downloads by accident, but that's only like 5.
i can't sinc lost songs onto my phone or ipod, but if it was already on there it will stay on there luckily.
one of my cd's i still have, and love to bits, but cant put onto my ipod because even if you locate songs from a cd, once you eject it it says lost again! If you want to sinc it onto your device you have to have the cd in.
please help, someone, it's driving my head in!

The easiest solution is to use your backup to restore your iTunes folder to what it was before this happened.
It sounds like your music is not organized in standard iTunes folder structure or it would be able to find others.  While you can do that (I have to over 8 years) there are disadvantages.
If you want to sinc it onto your device you have to have the cd in.
Is this you saying this or is this a message your are seeing? I don't know if it is even possible to have a CD listed in iTunes without importing it.
iTunes works by using a database to store information on what you have added and where it is located.  It then doesn't actually look at the files until you try to play them.  What is important is if the actual files are really missing, or if iTunes simply has lost track of where they are located.  You check that by looking in the media folder contents in your iTunes folder.
Since you do not have music in standard folder structure you may have to rebuild your complete iTunes library by making a blank library and re-adding media to it (of course losing playlists, ratings, date added, playcount).
It's remotely possible your whole hard drive is suffering from file corruption which will take a major restore of everything on it.

  • Ok my computer is being stupid, ive tryed everything!

Ok i just got a new HP Pavilion dv9925nr Notebook PC, and everytime i start it up, theres this one little application in the middle of the screen that says "Back to PC Possibilities" and it always goes to that before i can do anything, and it will finally get to it and then i go to "Explore this computer" icon at the top left of the screen, then i surf the web for a while then these boxs pop up, then it will close everything im doing and goes to that PC Possibilities thing, and it does that at random times on the computer what do i do?

There should be an option somewhere to disable it, usually in the form of a checkbox next to something that says "Show me this every time Windows starts up", or something to that effect, somewhere on the screen. If it has a toolbar, see if you can access a Settings, Options, or Preference tab and search for an option to disable it.
A more advanced option would be to access the Microsoft system configuration utility by going to the Start Menu and typing "msconfig" in the search bar and pressing Enter. Once there, go to the Startup tab and look for the offending program and uncheck the box next to it and restart the computer.
I don't own an HP, nor do I get the message you are getting, so my solution is just a suggestion, but it may work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Maybe I'm just being stupid but

Where on earth is the Uk support email address. I went into customer support, then clicked on email support. I selected my mp3 player type and when i got to the end it said that there was no matches and i had several options. I chose the email support one but it just took me back to the start which is obviously useless. My Zen is severely broken and i just want to find out how to get it repaired/replaced. Can anyone tell me how to do this. I have no intention of calling some premium rate number so can someone please help me.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You could try this link and list down all the things that you have done on your unit so that they will not going to tell you to do the same thing again. Let's see how it goes then.
    Best of luck.
