MySQL, MS access, Oracle ... spec question
guys,
Say I have to create a database with the following spec:
500 users,
30 simultaneous connections,
All information in the db will be text and will not exceed 200Mb
What db should I use?
I�ve been using MS for a while and it worked great, however, I learned that mySQL is much more robust and FREE. As per Oracle � I�m not sure.
Anyone can help on this one?

Will there be more reads (SELECTS) than writes (UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT)? If so, then mySQL will excel at that. If you will have a mix of reads and writes or will have more writes than reads. You might want to look at PostgreSQL, it's another free database and it works great.

Accessing mysql database from oracle using dg4odbc
I've been trying to create a database link from a MySQL database to Oracle using the Oracle dg4odbc gateway. I downloaded and installed DataDirect's ODBC package which includes mysql ODBC library (ddmysql24.so) and a generic ODBC libary (libodbc.so). After creating the DSN in odbc.ini, I tested it and it can connect to the mysql database. Then I created the init{SID}.ora file in hs/admin directory, added dg4odbc lines in the listener.ora, and added lines in tnsnames.ora. Then I tnspinged the new SID with success. Finally, I created the database link. However, when I tried to access the database link using the commands "select * from mdl_user@moodle;", I got the ORA-28500 error like the following:

My mysql database is utf8 by default. Do I have to use latin1?
It seems to me that the dg4odbc translates the sql commands incorrectly (having double quotes around the selected table).
Any help is greatly appreciated.
JeffreyThe syntax error occures for example when MySQL isn't running in ANSI mode and thus does not allow double quotes around the objects. DG4ODBC 11.1.0.6 by default always adds double quotes to table/column/view names.
A quick test to check if you hit the double quote issue would be to set the MySQL DB into ANSI mode:
- Open SQL*Plus
- execute:

the host and port depends on your network setup of your VM.
Do an ifconfig -a and see what IP adress your guest has.
With this IP address you should be able to access EM from outside your VM (but on the VM host, not from outside the network) with the same port.

Conversion of Mysql query in oracle acceptable query format

I have successfully converted my MySql database in oracle. Now the problem is how to execute already written hundreds of Mysql query on the oracle. There are many syntax variation in Mysql query format which is not acceptable for oracle.
For Example
Select case_id as 'this is alias' from cases
The above query can run on Mysql database but have problem while executing Oracle, because single quotes should be replaced with double quotes before executing it on oracle. There are also many other syntax conflicts.
I have tried to resolve the problem through SwisSQLAPI but problem still exist as SwisSQLAPI is not dealing with all syntax conflict. In my case (select if (expresion, true,false)) must be replace with decode (expression, value,true,false) function of oracle and this conversion is not supported by SwisSQLAPI.
Please help me in resolving this problem
ThanksThe problem with trying to port from one language (mysql SQL) to another (oracle SQL) is that there's generally no hard rules for a computer to follow, that it will get it 100% correct.
Look at babelfish when you translate a foreign language to English. The end result is readable (usually), but it's rarely completely correct.
The problem is when you feed something into Oracle SQL, it needs to be 100% correct.
All you can really do here is rewrite these queries. It shouldn't actually take as long as you think, because 50% of queries will generally need very minor changes you can do in a minute, and 25% won't need any changes at all. -
MYSQL 55 to Oracle 11gr1 replication(oneway) - can not replicate
I have setup golden gate replication between mysql 55 and oracle 11gr1. While trying to setup the initial load, I do'nt see any data push to oracle from mysql.

I can see on report, extract has picked 4 rows for insert, but on replicat side no replication done. No error reported in gserr.log and there was a communication between source side of extract with traget side manager and sunsequently repliacat on target was started by manager and stopped normally. but no rows replicated.
Between oracle-to-oracle there is no problem. But my actual project is to setup from mysql to oracle (one way replication).

Problems while migrating from mySql DB to oracle DB
Hi All,
I'm using sql developer tool to migrate from MySql DB to oracle DB. I followed the below steps.
1) I've created oracle and mysql connections successfully.
2) I've captured Mysql data and I'm able to see the captured model in ' Captured Models ' window. After that right clicked on the captured model and selected ' Set Data Mapping'. Selected ' apply ' button without changing anything. After that I've right clicked on the captured model and selected ' Convert to Oracle Model ' . It has shown the converting process. After some time it has shown conversion completed successfully.
But converted model is not visible in ' Converted Models ' window.
Can anyone kindly assist on how to migrate from MySql Db to Oracle DB?

We did mysql to oracle migration some time back and played with workbench tool and many other softwares available.
However our experience was not so good with these tools, each tool had its own limitation and was not able to migrate 100% data. Even the speed of migration was too slow which would have violated our production SLAs.
So after spending a month with these tools we finally decided to create our own scripts for data migration. We used tools like TOAD and SQL Yok to create the DDL for the tables and other DB objects.
For the data migration we downloaded the mysql data in flat files and used sql loader to upload the same data in oracle. Even if this was a time consuming activity but this resulted in 100% data migration with no record getting failed and the time taken for this activity was around 6 Hrs in comparison to time of 24-28 Hrs that the workbench tool took.

Conversion of mysql db to oracle db
Hi,
I want to details of how to convert mysql database to oracle database....Here goes:
(1) Assume an existing MySQL database with schema and data,
(2) Install an Oracle instance; create a database with the same schema as MySQL,
(3) Transfer the data from MySQL to Oracle using an ETL tool like Microsoft DTS or Informatica,
(4) Celebrate.
Maybe Hibernate can make the creation easier using Hibernate tools. Once you have MySQL mapped properly you can just change the dialect and generate the Oracle schema.

We did mysql to oracle migration some time back and played with workbench tool and many other softwares available.
However our experience was not so good with these tools, each tool had its own limitation and was not able to migrate 100% data. Even the speed of migration was too slow which would have violated our production SLAs.
So after spending a month with these tools we finally decided to create our own scripts for data migration. We used tools like TOAD and SQL Yok to create the DDL for the tables and other DB objects.
For the data migration we downloaded the mysql data in flat files and used sql loader to upload the same data in oracle. Even if this was a time consuming activity but this resulted in 100% data migration with no record getting failed and the time taken for this activity was around 6 Hrs in comparison to time of 24-28 Hrs that the workbench tool took.
