N95 on 3 - beware the repair man

This is for info for any 3 users who might need to try the 3 repair service. Beware, you could end up spending unnecessary money if you don't take extra advice.
I had a problem with my N95 freezing on startup. 5 months old and well looked after. Couldn't fathom it so contacted 3, my provider. Told to send for repair - returned with message that it was liquid damage - not covered by warranty. AAAAGGGGHHHH! not only that, when I phoned 3 to ask for clarification, was told it was irreparable - which is why no repair estimate was given.
I was given expensive replacement options - complained and was left feeling badly let down.
Last resort, should have been first, checked out this forum, found a similar problem tried the "3 finger reset" and IT WORKED. Phine back to A1 again. Thanks so much.
Shame on you you 3! Really bad and inaccurate advice from them.Pity I'm locked into 13 more months contract.
P.S. liquid damage? Well looked after, so I don't know how that could have happened. 3 staff said it could be moisture from the air! {is that possible?}. Wish I knew that before I bought it - didn't take out insurance.

Sometimes a phone can collect moisture if it's been in a steamy place like a bathroom or if it's been in a tight pocket next to your skin and you've got very warm or sweaty.
There are little labels inside that turn pink if they have been exposed to moisture.
There is one that you can see underneath the battery, a small white(or pink) label in an area about 1.5mm x 4mm neer the phones serial number sticker.

  • Who can solve iSync problem with Nokia N95? (I use the Nokia plug already)

    Hello
Since I bought my new cool Mac:, I sync my N95 with iSync and the Nokia N95 plug-in. Thinking at first that is works flawlessly (as other members here seem to think as well) I later found out, that if I make changes to any calendar or "to do" description! on either the N95 or the Mac it syncs, but only up until a certain number of characters. If I exceed this number, the description on the phone will simply be cut off - in the iCal it still fully appears though.
Rather surprising, since when syncing with a PC via the Nokia PC suite there is no such an issue. All my often lengthy descriptions are fully put on the phone. And if I sync back there are no problems either. So I guess it has to do with the iSync protocol or this Nokia N95 iSync plug-in? Any ideas, solutions...? Any help greatly appreciated!

The flex cable is damaged. Some years back when I had a Nokia N95 8GB the flex cable was damaged and for a few days the screen was showing strange colours at the display and eventually the screen became black. I went to a local repair shop and I replaced the flex cable and what I noticed was that the flex cable that it had no proximity sensor on it so I told the technician to remove the proximity sensor on the original one and replace it with the new flex cable. Another thing I discovered was that after fitting the flex cable and returning the cover the front camera was not in its usual position so the technician had to do some modifications to get it back to its normal position and after a few months it was damaged and this time I went to Nokia Care Centre and replaced the flex cable for a small fee and what I noticed was that the flex cable that I previously bought was a fake cable. The one bought from Nokia Care Centre had its proximity sensor and when the cover was returned the camera was in its exact position the same as it was with the original flex cable. What I wanted to say is that please beware of fake flex cables on the market and I suggest that you buy it from an authorised Nokia Dealer.

  • IMac G5 (2004) logic board and the repair extension program

    Hi,
I know that there are tons of topics about logic board/power supply troubles witht the first generation G5s, and I'm sorry to start yet another new thread, but I still have some questions about this issue.
I have a first generation iMac G5. Long story short...when I first got it the computer would shut itself off sometimes after I had put it to sleep. When I would try to restart nothing would happen, but usually letting it sit unplugged a while would solve the problem (occasionally when I'd restart a different start up noise would sound and the white light would flash quickly). It happened so randomly, that I just lived with it, blaming the problem on my dorm network, or a power failure. A few days ago I tried to start the computer up and nothing happened (just a VERY faint sound like a clicking or ticking or intermitant humming...definatly electrical sounding). I unplugged it overnight, but the next day still nothing. I decided to go through the troubleshooting steps Apple lists online. The internal power button could not start it up and the second LED does not flash, which according to Apple means the logic board needs replacing. Luckily my serial # is covered by the Repair Extension Program, and I'm bringing my computer in tomorrow morning to be fixed (just in time for back to school).
I have become concerned, while browsing the discussion topics, that this fix may not be permenant. I've read a few posts that claim that they are on their third Logic Boards, and this kind of scares me. My parents bought me the computer (our family's first ever Mac) and did not purchase the AppleCare extended warranty (they had heard how reliable Macs were...hmmm.) I didn't even know that I could purchase AppleCare after-the-fact until it was several months after my 1yr warranty expired. I do appreciate the fact that Apple recognized what seems to be a common problem with this generation of iMacs, but I wonder why they did not contact the owners of these machines to let them know that the problem and repair extension even existed.
So I guess my real question is...Does anyone know if, after this repair Apple will replace the logic board if it dies again? Is there a limit to the number of qualified repairs you can get through this Repair Extension program? Also is there any other Extended warranty type thing I can purchase after my 1yr. warranty is up.
Sorry the post is so long...I'm just scared about the fate of my beloved Mac.
    iMac G5 (2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Oh man, am I actually relieved reading this thread. Just took my baby (iMac G5 first generation) in for repairs today, not knowing what was wrong with it. Luckily my serial numbers are in the range, so I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to cover this.
Brief synopsis of what happened, in case it differs from anyone else's
About a month ago, my iMac started to not wake up from sleep mode. Instead of waking up, it would just shut itself off. This continued for about 2 months, with me thinking nothing of it. Then, instead of shutting itself off, the computer would restart when I attempted to put it to sleep.
Then, last night, I was surfing the net and all of a sudden the power just failed. No noise, no "grey screen", we're talking like a millisecond later the screen was black. I treid unplugging the machine and then plugging it back in while simultaneously holding the power button to reset the PSU and still nothing. At that point it was about 1:30 in the morning, so I just went to bed not wanting to deal with it until the next day. By the time I woke up, there was a distinct smell of electrical components burning (in grade 8 shop class we used to hook up resistors to the voltage generator and crank the juice up until they fried when teach wasn't around, so I distinctly remembered the acrid stench :P)
I opened the back up and did the LED check, and #2 wouldn't even blink. So I took it in and they said they'd have to get back to me and that's where I stand now.
The thing that concerns me is that if some of the components fried that there may be possible damage to the motherboard etc. Luckily I'm not too worried about the hard drive because it did still boot up and all. People that have experience with this, what usually happens with files on your HD after a logic board replacement? Are they usually fine?
The other thing that concerns me is that apple has made no effort to contact me, and it will be 2 years after the purchasing date come November 1, 2006. I'm lucky that I caught this now before it was too late.

  • Stuck in the Repair Bin of the Apple Store

Just wondering if anyone else has had their machine get "stuck" at the Apple Store waiting to be shipped to the repair depot.
My machine (CTO Dual 2.0) didn't have the CPU whine, had a touch of the inverter whine, but was otherwise fine. However, in the third week, it developed a problem with the ram attached to the video card (pretty interesting issue, actually) and the Mac Genius said it needed to be sent in... This was on a Friday at noon..
As of yesterday (Monday) the machine was still "waiting for shipment". I called last night and was told that it shipped out...but this morning, the online status page still showed "waiting for shipment". I called the store and was told that it didn't ship out last night but had, in fact, gone out this morning, but the online status page still hasn't updated...
I'm guessing/hoping that they didn't have the correct return box and that added to the delay (and praying that they didn't otherwise misplace my machine), but am concerned that the site hasn't updated...
Has anyone else experienced lags/delays like this?
    Sigh...
    Thanks.

My first MBP was a whiner and it had a deffective superdrive. I sent it in with the lady telling me it would be no later than 2 weeks till a replacement came.
I checked the repair status online, and it said it was expected a month from the day I called it. So as you would guess I called back in much frustration and the man told me I would have to wait in the line like everyone else because they were so busy.
Even more frustrated I called again. This time a very timid lady was on the phone and I asked her to send me to the production department where I had to convince someone there that it was their fault and I shouldnt be punished for their mistake. I happily received my MBP 4 days later.
2 days later I wasn't so happy. The whine drove me mad and the pringle lid was just unacceptable. Instead of having Apple send me a replacement, I just demanded my money back and I would go to mystore and buy one myself.
The Sage Continues later this week!

  • HT203254 were you able to get the faulty VGA chip replaced after the repair extension program expired? how have you achieved it?

i am currently in europe. my MBP17"  was manufactured after may 2007 and was in service both in the US and europe between April 2008 and Dec 2010 three times in total, while still under warranty. none of these times was the motherboard exchanged for one with a non-recalled VGA GeForce8600GT chip.
now the chip died and the computer no longer loads. Apple authorised service provider says they are not able to even order these parts for me any more as the machine is in vintage status. apple claims to no longer stock them. apple support line claims they're very sorry, but they cannot help as the repair extension program is over.
non-authorised cervice centers would happily service it for more than $300.
what shall i do here, as investing another $300 here makes no sense, please help?

  • I sent in my iPod nano to the replacement program about two weeks back. However, I checked the status of the repair and it still says it has not been received yet. Is there any way to follow up on where the nano could be? I sent it via FedEx.

I sent in my iPod nano to the replacement program about two weeks back. However, I checked the status of the repair and it still says it has not been received yet. However, my boyfriend sent in his the same time I did and his repair status says repair being diagnosed. I still have the "receipt" of the package when they first sent it to me. I sent it via FedEx. Is there any way to follow up on where the nano could be or maybe find out if I can still get a replacement even though my nano might be lost in transit?

    I sent it via FedEx.
Call FedEx.  They will be able to track their own packages.  They will let you know if your iPod Nano was delivered and to who!

  • I cannot connect to the iTunes Store on my PC. I am running Windows 7. I have run the updates and the flushdown. I've run the repair download ... no results. Help!

iTunes still does not work properly. It will let me play the music, but it still won’t let me connect to the iTunes store. I did all of the updates, including the "repair missing files" and did a flush and everything comes back as just fine.
I’ve thought about totally uninstalling and reinstalling, but I don’t want to lose all the settings and configurations. Hopefully we can figure out what went wrong.
Last week, I was trying to download an app a couple of days ago and it seemed to get stuck. We had to do a “hard shutdown”to get the computer to shutoff and get out of the iTunes program. I don't know if that had anything to do with my problems. Hopefully any suggestions will help me get back into the iTunes Store. I miss my iTunes!!

Try iTunes 9.2.1 which will run on OS X 10.4.11.  iTunes 9.2.1, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056
You also need at least Safari 4.0.3 to connect to the iTunes Store.  You can download Safari 4.1.3 for OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069

Why is it that Apple have no interest in helping I have a iPhone 4S and since updating to ISO 7.0.4 I have no wifi at all told me it's a hardware issue and I will be charged for the repair as it's just over a yr old so I've got a 24 month contract so 12 months with a phone that is not working right I have read loads of other people that have the same problem so how can they put it down to the phone and when asked where to take it was told to google it not happy at all apple u need to sort it out never again am I buying anything for yourselfs again DISTGUSTED would be an understatement

No joy at all they just keep saying it's the phone but was fine before update and @metasolaray why should I pay for extra cover when the fault is not the phone but the update they have put out for everyone to install and I am far from being the only person as there is hundreds of people going through the same with this update and it's not been the first time they messed it up

Apple should take resonsibility for this, otherwise they will lose lots of loyal customers. I have moved away from the ipad due to expense and am now very tempted to do so away from the iphone. Selling a product that prompts an update that breaks the phone is not good.

Have had the same issues with iPhone 4S since the upgrade.  No wifi button, battery draining every 8 hours with no use, phone shutting on & off for no reason at all.  I gave in and tried the hair dryer method.  Turned the phone off and hel d the dryer over the camera lense area for one minute.  Turned the phone back on and to my shock, had wifi button back again.  That was 2 days ago.  Battery is lasting normal amount of time again and I can use wifi again!  Hopefully this will last.  I know it doesn't work for everyone but it doesn't hurt to try.  Much better than spending the $200 at the Apple store, which by the way, the genius said Apple is aware of the problems but there is nothing they can do.

Having the same issue: iOS 7.0.2 with no WiFi / poor Battery stamina and really slow software experience when opening several options at Settings icon.
Apple care agent contacted me and we try all alternatives to isolate and detect if this is regarding a hardware problem. Of course they told me it is. Too sad. My phone is in immaculate condition.
My mother has an Iphone, my father has an Iphone, my 2 sisters have Iphones, my brother, wife and daugther... we all have Iphones. Mine's the only one with this fault (my personal experience: fail prob is 12,5% -1 out of 8).
At this point, I'm evaluating to stop buying apple products for fear that in the future the same will happen with some "premium" product that ultimately they are not.
Too sad, sorry but this is too much.

I got my 4s in August 2012, as an upgrade on my Vodafone contract Following the installation of IOS 7 I also experienced greying out of wifi and bluetooth. I tried various options suggested on forums however none worked. I took my phone to Vodafone who told me it was a problem they were aware of but couldn't do anything about as Apple had to deal with it. I took it to my nearest Apple store (60 miles round trip!) to be told it was not their responsibility, it was Vodafone's - something to do with consumer law! They also said I would have to pay £160 for a replacement phone as it couldn't be repaired. The 'Genius' was very cagey about it being a common problem by the way!! Back to Vodafone who said it was not their responsibility so back to Apple. This time I spoke with a Manager who told me in not so many words that it was an issue and agreed to halve the replacement cost of £160 to £80. By this time I just wanted it sorted to reluctantly paid £80 for a replacment phone. Seeing as this is CLEARLY a design fault, Apple should have replaced it free of charge. This experience just confirms what I am reading in lots of places about the Apple Company. I was going to buy an iPad but have decided not to now. I shall NOT be replacing the iphone when my contract is up. I too will be writing to BBC Watchdog.

You will probably be told that the solution is a replacement phone. Ask to speak to a Manager and insist on getting it at a lower price. I did this and got it at 50% of the usual repacement cost. Still not ideal but at least it saves you a bit of the money you shouldn't have to pay in the first place!

4s owner in the same boat as everyone else.
I setup a service call with apple on Monday this week and was told it's quite a common hardware failure. When I asked why I should be paying for a new phone I was advised to book an appointment in store. Well I've just returned from my appointment with a "genius" who told me that when the update is installing if any component is weak when installing it will be permanently disabled.  Was then told £150 for a new phone which I declined.
I've had  iPhones for 4 years now but due to this issue and apple washing their hands of any responsibility it will be my last.
Disappointed that a premium product has such poor backup from the manufacturer. If it was only my phone and not thousands of others I'd have probably paid for a new phone but I'll never give apple another penny again.

Yesterday I ran Disk Utility and came up with hundreds of permissions that needed repair.  I hit the "repair permissions" button and waited until it said they were repaired, but just for fun I hit the "verify permissions" button again, and they all came back!  I did this several more times and every time I would hit "verify permissions" I would get the same list.  What's up?  I've always suspected diagnostic programs, but this is Apple's own!

Ignore them. They aren't errors. You will keep seeing the same ones. As long as you get the message "Permissions repair complete," you're OK.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First of all, open the Apple menu -> About this Mac, and tell us what OS X version you have.
If it is 10.6.x, you need the Snow Leopard DVD. Insert it, press the C key while your Mac is starting up, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (in the menu bar) -> Disk Utility.
If it is 10.7.x or higher, hold down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up to boot up in OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
After opening Disk Utility, choose your OS X partition in the sidebar (it is usually named "Macintosh HD") and press "Repair Disk". When it has finished, restart your Mac, make a backup of your files and try upgrading to OS X Yosemite.
The backup will help you in case you decide to go back to the OS X version you are using now. If you cannot make a backup and the disk repair does not work, you will have to format the hard disk.
