NAS for Home.

Hi experts,
I am thinking of buying a good NAS case and putting 2 1T harddisk. (WD 1.0 TB )   Anything better and cheaper ?? )
This is mainly to store/backup lots of my family photos, videos, rip my DVDs/VCD and some small amount of documents ( encryption will help)
This box will be in office room connected to a soho router.
I plan to attach a simple Netbook to my TV and I should be able to watch the photos/videos from this PC.
I have zeroed in on
Linksys NMH300 (Avg $199 to $150)  (2 Disks only)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16833124345
Intel SS4200-E  ($135 - $150) (4 Disks possible )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859117003&Tpk
please suggest on
0) Why is NMH300 not on many websites ? Is it EOL ? Is there a new model that is getting release soon ?
1) Data Reliability once it is backedup.
2) Power costs.
3) Speed to backup ( I could not find Linksys speeds, Intel speeds were about 30 Mbps in some forum with gigi swicth connected)
4) Speed to read back
5) easy to backup (software on clients)
6) easy to display.
Is there any open-source media-software suggestions for the netbook (windows based) that can be used to display photos and videos

I think you can find these two links below to be very helpful to all your queries. By the way, the 2nd link is a review of the media hub's performance and it's functions/features including the backup software and media importer.

  • Suggestions for NAS for home network and remote access to clients

I have a photo studio in my home and will need to get the digital files to my clients roughly once a week. i am currently using dropbox, but was thinking of purchasing a NAS that I could use for this purpose,as well as for my home network needs, mainly itunes and photos of the kid...
any suggestions for a mac friendly NAS , and how it can be accesed by my client over the internet?
can a NAS be accessed like a FTP site, using fetch or another FTP client?
    thank for any help.
    -thomas

    Hi Thomas,
I have had similar considerations and finally chose QNAP 439 Pro II over the many other ones out there (LinkSys, NetGear, Bufallo, etc.). Without going into technical details, the main reason for my choice were easy-of-use, functionalities and scalability:
    http://www.qnap.com/prodetail_feature.asp?pid=148
It's not the cheapest solution out there, but works great with the Mac, even acts as storage solution for TimeMachine (with latest firm ware). And implementing client access is easy.
    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

  • Itunes 9 on a NAS for Windows and Mac

I have read dozens of posts here but cannot find the answer so hoping to get this cleared up once and for all.
I have a NeadyNAS NV+ where my "My Music" folder exists.
The NAS has a Firefly iTunes server
I have a Win7 desktop, Vista laptop and two Macbooks all running iTunes 9.0x
Originally I had the main iTunes on the Win7 desktop pointing to the NAS for the dataset. My playlists, etc were all local. I moved everything to the NAS and pointed my Win7 machine to the NAS and it works fine.
I want to share the collection across the network. I tried to get the Firefly working and I have activated the SHARING feature in iTunes... neither works. On the Mac, I see the Itunes server under the SHARED list but when I click on it, there list is blank. I have change the prefs to point to both \My Music and \My Music\itunes and while it sees the folders, it does not see the content.
When I use the "Share" option and point it to my Win7 machine I can see and play music but that defeats the purpose as it needs to point to and play from the NAS. Again, I can set up the UNC but the file does not appear in the playlist.
I am more than happy to blow the whole installation away and start from scratch but thought I would see if anyone can explain why and the step-by-step to resolve this.
    Thanks very much

Yes in theory it should work but it does not. Let me try to be more clear
I have all my media on the NAS. I know all the machines can connect to the NAS as it is my primary file sharing device.
I have iTunes 9.x on all my machines. I have enabled Home Sharing and logged in with my active account
Under the Shared list (right side) I have: "DR library" which is the local library on a regular Macbook, Itunes server (the Firefly on the NAS) and Home Sharing. I highlight Home Sharing, go to Prefs to set the point to the NAS and select the \my music\itunes folder
On my MBA and my macbook, when I select HOME SHARING and try to point to the NASA, it seems to work then, all of a sudden the Home Sharing option disappears on the right.
It should be pretty simple and maybe I am missing the obvious but this is driving me crazy

  • Which Mac mini for home server, Aperture & HTPC

    Hi,
I'm buying a Mac mini for:
    - home / small business server
    - Occasional HTPC usage (will be hooked to my TV via HDMI)
    - Occasional Aperture / iPhoto usage (minimal iMovie)
Which one is most suitable for this?
I was planing to go for Server  version (with bumped up RAM to 8GB), but now I read about video card and I'm not 100% anymore.
I will NOT use it for 3D - gaming or similar tasks!
    Thak you all for help!
    Vasja

I went for the non-server dual core i7 with AMD GPU and am very happy with it.  Do quite a bit of Aperture work and it never misses a beat (so far).  I'm not a fan of integrated Intel graphics and wouldn't trust it for HTPC duties.
I'm not sure how many/much of the 'server' functionality you're going to be using as it sounds more like file transfer and other tasks that could be accomplished through normal Lion.
Unless I'm missing something I assume the two hard drives in the Mini Server are just as much of a pain to replace as the one in the non-server Mini so I didn't see the point of having a two hard disc Mini.
For your requirements I would definitely look at how much of the server functionality you really need to utilise, and if the answer is 'not much' I'd recommend the i5 or i7 non-server Mini with AMD GPU and some sort of NAS, plus a sensible offsite backup plan for your data.

  • How to add NAS for iTunes and backups

I would like to add NAS to home network of older iMac (OSX 10.7.4), win 7 notebook, soon to be added MacAir, plus iPad, iPhones, and sonos.  I would like to move iTunes from iMac external drive to NAS and also use NAS for time machine backups of the 2 Macs and a backup for the win 7 notebook.  Any recommendations on NAS for mostly Mac network?  Can I use the NAS for both iTunes and for backups?

Most of the big brands support TM.. QNAP and Synology being the main contenders.
Moving itunes library is always dangerous and TM will not back it up.. since it is now on a network drive.. so take steps to ensure the library cannot be lost. This is of course far easier on a brand that has automatic backups and mirrored drives.. that the TC.

  • I have an ipad 2 and want to have one account for home and another for work, how do i do this?

I have an Ipad 2 and use it for work, I want to run a second account for home, how do I do this?

What kind of accounts? Multiple email accounts are supported.
    Multiple user accounts are not.
If you are saying you would like to have one set of apps, media, etc
for work and a different set for home, and switch between the 2
depending on network login or location, this is not a feature of iOS.
If this is not what you are asking, please post more details so someone
    may offer a solution.

  • Can you have two Apple IDs on one IPAD? One for school and one for home?

Can you have two Apple IDs on one IPAD? One for school and one for home?
If so do you know how to do it?

It depends on what you want to do.
You could, for example, have one AppleID for iCloud backup [and therefore message syncing, notes syncing, etc] and a second one for iTunes [music, iBooks, etc].
But if you are looking for a way to flip everything between different appleIDs, then no.

  • Having trouble setting up home network for home sharing

Hi there, I'm new the idea of home sharing. What i want to do is watch the movies that i have on my iMac on my iPad. So sort of like wireless streaming.
I see that Home sharing on iTunes allows you to view videos stored on your iMac on another device like the iPad etc.
I've already setup Home sharing accounts and looged in on iTunes on both my iMac and iPad.
The problem is being on the same Wi-Fi network. I don't understand what this means.
I regualrly use Internet sharing to share my Macs internet connection with my iPad over WiFi.
But I'm not sure what setting I should use for home sharing to work to watch videos from iMac on iPad
On my iMac under Sharing there's a whole bunch of options DVD or CD sharing, File Sharing, Printer Sharing etc.
The only box i have checked is Internet Sharing..
What to i have to do to get the iMac and iPad sharing video over WiFi through home sharing??

In your configuration you have inadvertently created a different subnet for the wireless iMac G5. To remedy this, configure the AirPort Express so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED.

  • I just bought my 10 year old autistic daughter an IPOD touch that she needs to take to school with just limited music on it but she also also has an IPAD mini for home that is fulllyloaded with apps .  How do I set up Itunes to make this work

I just bought my 10 year old autistic daughter an IPOD touch that she needs to take to school with just the music (no apps) on it but she also also has an IPAD mini for home that is fullly loaded with apps.  The last time I tried to connect 2 devices to Itunes I ended up loosing my own music library so I am a bit hesitant to start setting up this new IPOD touch with outsome help. Anyone have any ideas on how I set up Itunes to make this work and not loose her IPAD apps and media?

Open itunes, connect ipad, select what you want, sync.

  • HT3819 I am a teacher. I have an iPhone and iPad for personal use.  I also have an iPod and now an iPad for school use.  Would it be best for me to use home sharing on all 4 devices, or should I split my account and have separate accounts for home & schoo

My first i device was an iPod touch that I was given for use in my classroom.  Then I got an iPhone for personal use.  Both items are listed under the same username and account.  Since then I now have 2 iPads, one for home and one for work.  I have many apps that are only for work like Math Zombie and Science Facts, and many that are for personal use, like Facebook and YouVersion.  I know that I can synch each device and tell iTunes which apps go on which device.  However at home I use a Mac, and my school computer is a PC.  I am wondering if I should split my account and keep personal separate from work.  Then I can synch all school related devices on the PC and home devices on the Mac.  I realize that there maybe the rare occaision that I might want one app for both accounts.  That's the chance I take on splitting my account.  Are there ay benefits one way or the other?

Will you be the person paying for apps on both accounts?
Are you the only person that will use both of the iPads?
Is there a chance students will be using the work iPad and if so, do you want personal data stored on it?
If you're the only one using it I'd keep the same account just to have the flexibility of having access to everything on all devices. If your students will be using it or if the school is paying for the school apps I'd keep separate accounts. It all depends on how often you will use school apps from home, and home apps at school. Just some things to consider...

I recently updated to Yosemite and never had this issue before.

I'm not 100% sure of the ins and outs, but it's some sort of known issue between Yosemite, Airport and wifi. All you can do is wait for a fix and keep restarting your equipment as and when needed, unless you have the ability to connect your Mac via ethernet.

  • So, I have created my home sharing from my base computer to my laptop. On my lap top I see the tab for home sharing but it will not let me connect to my computer to share my music over. I have done everything iTunes has told me to but it still won't work.

I got some more info that may help.
I put a cd on my laptop, and was able to share it to my computer... So the problem is only from my computer to my laptop. I tried the firewall thing and it did not help. I read the rest of the trouble shooting page, and nothing else applies. iTunes is an execption and already was. I can not think of anything else being my problem. Do you think I should re-install iTunes or would that be a waste of time? At this point I am about to just call Apple for some help because I am getting to stressed over this.
    Thanks

  • Confused how to set-up a PC & laptop with Cisco WRVS4400N VPN for home use

Just bought a new PC and laptop and was recommended by (CDW) to use a Cisco WRVS4400N to set up the VPN.
For home use, only the PC and laptop, both running Windows 7.  I use Comcast as my ISP.
The mountains of docs confuses me to no end, can anyone simplify this for me.  I look at all the details and do not know where to start.
    In short,
    (1) configure router to recognize my PC and Comcast, and I guess the laptop.
    (2) configure laptop to go wireless and communicate with PC.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Terry

For a very small office and a minimum of admin and tech know how, one approach i'd suggest is to not worry about user id collisions at all. any time anyone wants to use a mac you just set them up as a user, using consistent names/passwords.
Have a "Work" volume on each mac that has "ignore ownership on this volume" ticked. that way UID collisions aren't important.
You can make a Desktop folder on the Work volume and make a SYMBOLIC LINK from every user's home that replaces their desktop with the desktop folder on the Work volume.
Make it known that the user's home is for personal stuff ONLY, and the Work volume (inc the desktop) is where work in progress lives.
At a later date with some confidence in your network and your admin skills you could impose consistent UIDs using an OD master

  • My MacBook works fine wifi everywhere except for home.  The home wifi is fine with the iPad and iPhone.  How can I fix my MacBook?

My MacBook works fine wifi everywhere except for home.  The home wifi is fine with the iPad and iPhone, so I assume the issue is with my computer.  My computer works fine on wifi networks elsewhere.  The only problem is at home.
The computer "connects to the wifi," but browsers and other internet-dependent software do not work.  Curiously, if I connect the ethernet cord that doesn't work either. Usually if I reset the modem to factory settings twice (for some reason, once doesn't do the trick), my computer will fully connect to the wifi.  However, in a few days, it goes back to not working.
Today, resetting the modem didn't work. I could only get wifi connection while in safe mode, but not in normal mode.  So, the issue seems to be software not hardware. I have tried starting new accounts in normal mode, but those also don't connect properly to internet.
Not sure if this is relevant, but this problem started when my building switched internet providers from ComHem to Telia (I live in Sweden).
What do you recommend I do?
    Thanks!
PS I use Snow Leopard: OS 10.6.8

Not unless the modem is causing a problem.
What you want to do is get it to work reliably over Ethernet first, then tackle wifi. Power off the modem. On your macbook, delete the Ethernet configuration and the Wifi configuration. Power up the modem, then connect the mac via Ethernet. Create the new Ethernet configuration and see if you can connect.
