Native installer updating installation

When we have a new version of our application on windows and produce a new .exe file when the user runs it there is no update. Does it just override all the files by default?

Any thought on this? And is it possible to run two versions of the same application so specify the install directory?

  • How to auto update AIR runtime when installing with native installer?

Hi, we recently changed our app to a native installer for both Windows and OS X.
It seemed that when we distributed a .air file the install process would upgrade the installed version of the AIR runtime (if necessary) before installing our application.
Now it seems that if AIR is installed with an old version (say 2.5) and the native installer app is installed (requiring AIR 3.0) an error message appears that says "Sorry, an error has occurred. The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer file from the application author".
My question is how can we have our native installer bring the user's version of the AIR runtime to the minimum required (3.0) or the latest version (3.6)?
The error message displayed to the user does not provide meaningful info.
Thank you so much for your help with this!

Hi Chris, thank you for the response. I've spent quite a bit of time browsing the forum and you're sort of a celebrity to me ;-)
The "installer damaged" error message is happening on the first install of our application with older version of the AIR runtime.  The app is using the nativeapplicatoinupdater ( http://code.google.com/p/nativeapplicationupdater/ ) project for updates (which is working great once the app is installed).
I performed a few tests on OS X (10.8.2) this evening and here are my results.
AIR 1.5: app install dialog with option to download AIR 3.6 is shown. INSTALL OK
AIR 2.04.: app install dialog with option to download AIR 3.6 IS NOT shown. INSTALL FAILS
AIR 2.5.: app install dialog with option to download AIR 3.6 IS NOT shown. INSTALL FAILS
AIR 2.6: app install dialog with option to download AIR 3.6 is shown. INSTALL OK
AIR 2.7: app install dialog with option to download AIR 3.6 is shown. APP INSTALL OK
So it seems the problem is with AIR 2.04 and 2.5. I uninstalled and reinstalled the AIR runtime for each test. I can consistently reproduce the failed install with 2.04 and 2.5. The same DMG file was used in each test.  I have seen similar error messages on Windows 7 when AIR 2.5 was installed, though I didn't get a chance to look at the log to confirm it's the same migration error.
The failed installs seem to drop out because of: "failed while validating native package: Error: invalid migration signature".
Tomorrow I can create a version without the migration certificate to see if it can be successfully installed on 2.04 and 2.5. It's "interesting" that the other versions of the runtime do not fail on this condition.
Here are details from the log:
Here is the log with AIR 1.5 (install Adobe AIR 3.6 (required) is checked and displayed: INSTALL OK

  • Updater vs. native installer?

Can anyone clarify this for me:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/desktop/Updater.h tml
The Updater class is only supported in the desktop profile. It is not supported for extended desktop applications (applications installed with a native installer)...
Extended desktop application (applications installed with a native installer) can download a new version of the native installer and launch it using the File.openWithDefaultApplication() method.
First, is the "native installer" referring to when you choose the "Output as: Windows intaller" in the AIR settings?
Second, does this mean an AIR app installed from a .exe can't install updates using a .air file? Or is this simply saying you can't use the Updater class to install an update from a .exe file? In other words, is this doable:
    1. Create an AIR app and output as Windows installer
    2. User the Updater class to install an update using a .air file

  • Adobe AIR Runtime Redistribution and Native Installer

Will there be new instructions for Adobe AIR 2.0 Runtime Redistribution? In particular, I'm looking for instructions on how to use the runtime redistribution installer to perform a "side-car installation" of AIR 2 alongside an application that uses the NativeProcess API (and so must be built into a native installer instead of a .air file).
    Thanks!

    Thirded!
On a test deployment using SCCM and the supplied Adobe AIR Runtime Installer files, we have managed to install our application with the 1.5.3 Air Framework with no major issues other than having to disable the Auto Update feature that doesnt really work in a corporate environment.  Everything was absolutely fine until the release of AIR 2.  Now, the test machines are prompted to install the updated Adobe Air 2 framework once a week, see an excerpt from an Adobe blog post below:
"In addition, once a week AIR apps check to see if an AIR update is available, and if so, users are presented with the option to update to the most up‐to‐date version, helping to ensure that end users get the benefits of improved security and performance."
That sounds great right?  Except my users (like many other corporate users) don't have Admin permissions on their machines (hence the use of SCCM), with the result being resultant error messages when a user attemptes to install the AIR framework update without the necessary permissions.
All of the above would be fine if the Adobe AIR Runtime Installer files were updated to include the latest version of the runtime.  This of course hasn't been done yet - does anyone know when this may happen?  Can anyone help me with this or offer any advice?
I hope the above makes sense and I would really appreciate any help or advice!
    Thanks!

  • Packaging an AIR application in a native installer

Hi! I'm trying to create a native installer of my AIR Application,  because (I think) it's the only way make the native processes working.  But I have a problem: I used the following command to pack: "adt  -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx -target native  -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx myApp.exe myApp-app.xml", but I get  the error: "File myApp-app.xml is not a valid AIRI or AIR file". In the  Flash Builder I use as additional compiler arguments:  "-locale=pt_PT,en_UK,fr_FR,de_DE,ro_RO,es_ES  -allow-source-path-overlap=true -source-path=assets" and I add the  source path "src/locale/{locale}/". What is the sintax for packing my  AIR application in a native installer? Thanks in advance.

Hi again! Thanks for the reply. I based myself on the link to see what command syntax I should use to pack my Air Windowed Application and it was the command that I presented in the previous post.

  • AIR File Icon (For Native Installer)

    Hi,
I am generating AIR application as native installer (.exe). I want to have a custom icon for my .exe file.
I have specified the icons in application descriptor file as
    <icon>
                        <image16x16>icon...</image16x16>
                        <image32x32>icon...</image32x32>
                        <image48x48>icon...</image48x48>
                        <image57x57>icon...</image57x57>
                        <image72x72>icon...</image72x72>
                        <image114x114>icon...</image114x114>
                        <image128x128>icon...</image128x128>
              </icon>
But this icon does not appear to be .exe file icon, It appears as application installed file icon. I want to have different icons for application installed icon (Application Icon) and separate icon for application installer (.air or .exe file custom icon)
    Kindly suggest any solution

In this case you need to update installer icon manually via third-party app like freeware "ResourceHacker" http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

    Thanks,

    Dear Marco,
Thanks for th links, its quite handy. One more help required from you as its related to Idsktune. I was just reruning the idsktune on Soalris 10 box where zfs file system used, and able to see the below warning
WARNING: largefiles option is not present on mount of /, files may be limited to 2GB in size.
Could you tell me this alert specific to zfs file system, I was searching the mount parameter options specific to file size, but not able to get anything. Below are the system parameters.
    bash-3.00$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
    file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
    open files (-n) 256
    pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 10
    stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
    cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
    max user processes (-u) 29995
    virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
In UFS file system I have noted, for such largefile option we are adding the "largefile" parameter in mount, below is such an example.
    /var/crash on /dev/md/dsk/d40 read/write/setuid/devices/intr/largefiles/logging/xattr/onerror=panic/dev=1540028 on Thu Aug 19 14:54:11 2010
Could you guide me on this file size warning specific to zfs file system.
Many thanks in advance for your support,

  • How to migrate certificate for a native installer

    Hello,
We have a native AIR app that uses some native files, so it needs to be packaged using "adt -package -target native [files...]" command and cannot be created as an AIRI file.
We include the SWF file, the app description XML and the required native files into the installer, and we also include our code signing certificate into this command line, and everything worked great.
Recently our code signing certificate expired, and we released an update with a new certificate.
However on the machines where our application had been installed previously, installation fails with the following error.
The certificate of the installed app fails to match either the signature or migration signature of the AIR file
It turns out that AIR framework expects a migration signature for applications that had been installed before and changed certificate.
The problem is that "adt -migrate" command expects an .AIR file, and fails to migrate a native installer (such as .EXE or .APP).
How should we migrate a native installer? is there any option in adt to do this?
    Thank you in advance,
    Anatoly

I know this is an older post, but it helped me find out how to make the migration procedure for native installer. I tried it with self signed certificate created by ADT tool and everything went fine.
But now, we obtained a commercial AIR signing certificate from Thawte and the process failes in step 3) ADT saying
'Certificate in PATH_TO_P12 could not be used to sign setup.msi' on Windows.
On mac, it says that signing native installer on OSX is not supported, so I skipped the signing option in step 3) and it worked fine.
I can skip the signing option on Windows as well and the process succeeds, but running the installer on machines with previous versions of application results in "Installer mis-configured' error message - the same error as if the migration process was not applied.
I already contacted Thawte if it is a certificate issue, reply from them was 'AIR certificate can only sign .air applications'. But when I build a native application directly from FlashBuilder and sign it with the Thawte certificate the whole process seem to succeed. The application can be installed on machines without previous version of the application. Those who already have the older version get the 'Installer mis-configured' error message.
I want to mark out again, that the same process but with a self signed certificate created with ADT, is successfull and the application can be installer as an update on machines with older version of the app. So I assume the workflow is correct.
Any ideas? Or somebody having the same issue?
    Thanks

  • Native Installer on Mac - not for App Store

I am trying to get an Air 3.1 native installer application to work for Mac under Mountain Lion's security model.  The app is not for distribution from the App store but it is downloaded from the web so it triggers Gatekeepers security on both the Installer and the App.
I am signing the Air app with a standard (Not Apple Developer) certificate.  I then copy the contents of the Dmg (the installer) into a new directory and use my Apple Id to codesign the Installer.  This allows the installer to run but when it attempts to actually launch the app, Gatekeeper stops it saying that "the App is not from the App Store or an Authroized Developer"
I tried to use the Apple Developer Cert in  Flash Builder but I get an error stating to check my cert or system time (see this: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4576223#4576223)
I know I can use adt to create the base App (use the bundle option).  I can then sign the base app with the Developer Cert.  But how can I take that app and produce a native installer from it?
Also, this app DOES NEED webkit resources - ifthat helps.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Barbara I´ve done what you suggested and I´m having the same problem. Its freezed. Is there any way I can download the update? I´m
stuck with a Photoshop that doesnt work. Adobe says that they cant help without a serial number and apple doesnt let me update. This is the most bizarre I have lived in terms of software.

  • Native Installer works with Net Use, but AIR File does not.

I'm building an AIR application that runs a "net use" command in windows 7.
Strangely, the installer type appears to impact run permissions:
+ Export release build to "Native Installer" -> "Net Use" works and I see all my test alert boxes.
+ Export release build to "AIR File" --> animations run and the app is responsive, but I don't see any of my alert boxes and the "Net Use" command shows no sign of running.

    Update - partial resolution:
Apparently you have to use a Native Install to use native functionality (don't know why this includes Alert Boxes).
I just found this bit on Adobe's web site:
Packaging an AIR application in a native installer
              http://help.adobe.com/en_US/air/build/WS789ea67d3e73a8b22388411123785d839c-8000.html
Adobe, please work to address this.  I'd like to release cross-compatible code and this creates a situation where the user has to choose a different installer based on their platform.  Minor, but annoying when an AIR file works for both in other instances.
It would also be nice to get some sort of error message.  I had no idea why things weren't working (even my Alert boxes were being swallowed).

  • Silent install not working for native installer

    Hi,
I am trying to install the air application (native exe) in C:\Program Files  using silent install, below is the command that I am using.. (have tried with the path in quotes as well)
    MyApp.exe -silent -location C:\Program Files
It doesn't seem to work with space in the folder names in the path.
    It works if I just give C:\  or D:\  or D:\someFolder   ,
Any ideas of how to get this working ?
    Thanks,
    Brijesh

I am taking a look at the parameter parsing in the native installer code and will give you an update soon.
    Thanks,

    NOTE:
a.) You should not need to put your path inside both ' and " marks.
Could you please verify that you get the same error message in the log if you use:
      My_App.exe -silent -location "C:\Program Files"
b.) Can you please see if you happen to have another AIR application installed that has the same <id>? We have seen this lead to some issues in the past.

  • Native installation package creation failed: Error: EndUpdateResource: Windows Error #5

We've got a customer who gets this error when attempting to install our software. My Google-fu makes me think this is a rare error. Chris, would you have any ideas as to the cause of this?
    Many thanks,

On Windows 7, make sure you are running as Administrator:
Download and install Adobe AIR from this page
Download YNAB3_Live_3.5.3.4.air to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder on your computer where you saved the YNAB3_Live_3.5.3.4.air. If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose “Run as Administrator.” For Mac, Linux, and all other versions of Windows, simply double-click on it to install YNAB 3.

  • AIR to auto upgrade to (native installer)

    Hello,

The AIR check for the new upgrade avaiable and downloads the new (native installer) from the server but fails to run the installer.
We have used NativeProcess to run the newly downloaded native installer. The logs shows that the nativeprocess is not supported.
The supportedProfiles is set to <supportedProfiles>extendedDesktop desktop</supportedProfiles>.
We had also tried using openWithDefaultApplication() function to run the nativeinstaller but with no success.

  • Adobe AIR Native installation + DRM issues.

    Hello Friends,
We are looking at creating an application for a client whom is very concerned about piracy. They have a third party application which essentially injects DRM code into an windows exe. We created a demo air app which in turn was converted into an exe thanks to the native installer feature in Flash Builder for AIR and the third party worked fine by injecting after the DRM code.
However we realized that in the installation directory we can find the swf for the app, so essentially if we install another Air app and swap the SWF's we can actually get the content and circumvent the DRM.
I am wondering if there is anything we can do to prevent that (prevent the swf working within another AIR installation) and make it a little harder to crack.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I actually wanted to clarify a few things on this question in hope of still gettign an answer.
Apparently MDM Zinc does a good of creating a exe that can then later be succesfuly injected with DRM requiring an activation code to be able to install the software. It seems the swf gets converted to something else therefore injecting the DRM is more effective.
However I still want to do thid via AIR, the problem being is that the swf can be found in the installation and can be placed in another AIR app to circunvent the instalation code.
    Any thoughts are apreacited.

  • Adobe AIR HTML/JS application and Windows Native Installer

    Hi,
I am building an Adobe AIR application with HTML and Javascript and I would like to know how to make an Windows Native Installer.
I am trying to build it with Flash Pro but it keeps returning the error 'Invalid SWF file'. At the application.xml file the <content> points to my index.html file. I don't use any SWF file. When I change this to point to the SWF it does build tha installer but the application loads the SWF.
Is there any way to build a Windows Native Installer and the initial content be an HTML file?
p.s. I tried to extract the files from the installer file and edit the application.xml there to point to the index.html. But I can't repackage the files to a valid air native installer.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for reporting this. The internal bug number for the issue is #2740755. The issue is currently under review and will be investigated by one of AIR team members.

  • Air 2.6 Ubuntu Native Installer Problem

Hi, i have a problem creating and native deb installer with Adobe 2.6 with Ubuntu 10.10, when i run this code on terminal:
    /home/victor/Flex_SDK/Flex_SDK_4.5.0/bin/adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore /home/victor/Certificado.p12 -storepass secret -target native /home/victor/Desktop/TestNativeApp.deb TestNativeApp-app.xml TestNativeApp.swf
This code creates an deb native installer without any errors or warnings, but when i try to execute this file, the Ubuntu Software Center says "Internal Error the file /home/victor/Desktop/TestNativeApp.deb could not be openned", but when i try to run with dpkg -i /home/victor/Desktop/TestNativeApp.deb the file installs well.
    What am i doing wrong?.
    Thanks for yours responses.

I've got the same issue.  Ubuntu Software Center won't open it.
When I run it with dpkg like you do, I get a version number error, though:
parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/control' near line 2 package 'mypackage':
error in Version string 'v1': version number does not start with digit
    Errors were encountered while processing:
I assume this version is pulled from the air XML file, so I'm going to change that and make it only numbers and see if that fixes it.
